Carolina Booty

Rate this book
Jaxie Parker works for one of the best ad agencies in Atlanta and and thrives in the upscale fast lane. She loves everything about the big city including her power-packed days and party-filled nights. But life as she knows it comes to a screetching halt when the boss puts her in charge of the firm’s annual pro bono project, which is to revitalize a small town. Unfortunately, Rumton, South Carolina doesn’t have a mall or nightclub, much less a nail salon. For that matter, there’s no hotel, either. Jaxie ends up rooming with an old man in an even older house that he shares with a dog and a thieving raccoon. Just when Jaxie thinks that she’s landed in a dreadfully uneventful place, things heat up pretty fast -- there's much more to Rumton than meets the eye. Sexy men. A sinister plot to steal from the town. A raging wind storm. Quirky townspeople. And loads of astonishing pirate history. It all adds up to some major Carolina booty! “Ocean’s latest is delightful and entertaining.” –Romantic Times BOOKreviews

T. Lynn Ocean was first published in the 'North Myrtle Beach Times' (a small town weekly) but only after getting on one knee to beg the editor and offering to write for free. That was in 1995 and T. Lynn wrote the 'Humor Me' column for a year.

She went on to write freelance for various magazines and newspapers but her passion has always been fiction. Her first book, 'Fool Me Once', was published by St. Martin's Press in 2005. The best thing about writing fiction, T. Lynn will tell you, is that you get to make everything up. (Although some would argue that much of what they read in the newspaper is pure fiction, too.)

Between extended visits with her computer keyboard, she enjoys impromptu road trips (in the name of research, of course), brainstorming with friends, and eating great food anywhere with a view.

An outdoor enthusiast, T. Lynn Ocean lives in Little River, SC, with her husband and a few furry critters.

Jaxie Parker works for Shine Advertising and Public Relations in Atlanta, Georgia. She is young, dedicated to her job, likes to party, generally not ready to settle down, and definitely not with one man! When her boss assigns her to lead the yearly pro-bono job in Rumton, South Carolina she tries to get out of the assignment. A city girl go to a desolate rural rundown town that is miles away from malls and nail salons? Nothing could be farther from her comfort zone. Still her boss insists she will be the one to run the revitalization project. Details have been made and pack your bag Jaxie!

With trepidation and dissatisfaction, she drives to Rumton and stumbles onto the Chat 'N Chew where she goes in for something to eat and find the woman who's house she will be staying during her hopefully brief visit. A step into another world when she finds the counter unmanned and told to help herself! When the owner returns and makes her a sandwich, she sits down with Jax and eats half of her lunch! Don't have that happen in Atlanta!

One thing after another happens and Jax is happily ensconced in Pop's house with his dog and racoon because where she was supposed to stay has cats and she is highly allergic. As she walks around town meeting people and telling them about the revitalization plans, Jax discovers how unique the town and it's people really are. It doesn't take long for her to have a major change of heart and buckle down to help the town of Rumtown.

There is so much going on in this wonderful book that I would like to share with you. However I don't even know where to start. I will say that the author has captured small town life and citizens of that town extremely well. When good or bad come calling, the town responds and jumps in to help. The characters are incredible! Nuances are perfect, reactions to Jax and another stranger (Lester) who comes to town after her are genuine and open. These people are trusting yet not convinced they want any changes made to the unspoiled town they call their own. The events flow seamlessly as Jax tries to figure out what can be done, and Pop tries to show her what is wonderful about the town as is.

The book went in directions I didn't expect, but the author never let us down. By the end I was disappointed it was over and wishing for another book to tell me how things really turned out. But I didn't really need that because the author did tie up loose ends, and left us with a happy zinger at the end. Everyone should read this book! It has much to offer-small town living, pets, romance, con men and thugs, murder, friendship and loyalty, nature and environmental discussions, another romance, a cat5 hurricane, and even pirates! 234 pages packed full of people and life that is almost idyllic. Don't pass this one up!

I enjoyed "Mayhem in Myrtle Beach" by this author, and was tempted enough by her quirky characters and delightful story to give another of her works a shot. And "Carolina Booty" has its own set of strange but likable characters and a fun sense of humor. But its main character is less likable, its story less enjoyable and more predictable, and the writing itself has a number of spelling and grammar errors that jar the reader out of the story.

Jaxie works at an ad agency in Atlanta and loves big-city life... and so she's not thrilled that her latest assignment is to revitalize the dinky town of Rumton, South Carolina. Said town has a population mainly made up of senior citizens, its courthouse is also its police station and movie theater, and it doesn't have a beach, a doctor, a hotel, or even a nail salon. But the town's charms -- and an attractive coworker -- win her over... and with the help of some local legends about pirates and treasure, perhaps she can save Rumton after all...

The best parts of this book are those dealing directly with the town -- and had said town and its locals been the primary focus, I would have really liked this book. The characters are a colorful and fun bunch, and the history of the town could have been fascinating to explore but, sadly, doesn't get nearly enough focus. The villain of the story is fairly one-dimensional, but everyone else, including the animals, are fun to get to know... save the main character, who starts off rather shallow and irritating. She does get better as the story goes along, at least...

The story is pretty predictable -- successful big-city girl goes to a small town, has a hard time fitting in, ends up saving the town and finding a guy in the process. You can pretty much predict the story beats as the story progresses... though that's not to say it won't still be enjoyable. And the writing is decent... though there were a number of typos and grammatical errors in my Kindle edition of this book. Proofreading is your friend, people...

"Carolina Booty" is fairly predictable, and an obnoxious main character and some typos get in the way of my enjoyment. But it works as a light, fluffy read, and sometimes that's all you want from your literature.

I make it a practice that I don’t read books with graphic sex, graphic violence, or significant coarse language in them. When I start an author who has any of these in a book, I stop reading and mark the author down that I don’t want to read more of him/her. Fortunately, this book had none of these in it. However, I guess I need to add heavy romance to the list, as this book had too much of the fluttering eyelids, sideways glances, etc of a romance book.

The book also had a number of typos, poor grammar, and wrong word usages. An example (but I don’t think this specific word in this book) is using “there” when “their” is appropriate. It sadly needed proofreading.

When I finished Carolina Booty, I half expected to see “AND THEY LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER” on the last page. I know it’s sexist, but this was a “chick book”.

I guess that I won’t be reading any more of T. Lynn Ocean's books. The things that I considered issues were too much for me to continue with her.

I was predisposed to enjoy reading this book due to the proximity to the ocean; the small laid-back town atmosphere; the mystery; the "overachiever" and the touch of romance. I look for mysteries with a beach or seaside setting - easy for me to "meld with the book" as I can literally smell the sea or marsh while reading. While the mystery was not difficult to unravel along with the reasons, the number of characters and the descriptions of the characters was very good. The attention to detail in developing the "lifestyle" of the Rumton personalities was very good making one feel at home with them.
I recommend reading this book. It is not a difficult read but is very enjoyable!

Jax, up-and-coming ad executive and city savvy Atlanta-onian (if there is such a word!), was sent to "save a small town" on a pro bono assignment from her boss. What she didn't realize was it would not be as easy as she thought, someone else was interested in buying up the town, and she would fall in love with the quirky people who lived there and the town itself.

But as she leaves the assignment, she realizes she can't let it go. She returns, rides out a hurricane (literally and figuratively) as well as learns a few things about herself.

Good read, GREAT characters!

I enjoyed this book so much. The growth & changes in the main character are great. The small town vibe is played to perfection & the eccentric atmosphere is delightful! I fell in love with these people & Rum Towne! I love pirates & this book is a nice blended tale of mystery, not overly mushy romance, & whimsical, lovable characters. The story ended, but I wanted to spend more time with them. I want them all to be real so I can go there!

Unexpectedly cute

I totally got sucked in. I started out not liking some of the attitudes of the characters, but soon got turned around. It shows how a community can draw people into a full pledge devotion to a failing town and the people who have been there without much change. There is murder, romance, and intrigue . Bad guys and good. If you don't fall in love with the racoon, you have a problem.

Solid 3

I think this would classify best as women's fiction with suspense elements. I didn't like the MC much initially, but luckily she grew and changed with the story. The suspense elements added some nice twists but the pace and focus doesn't suit calling it a mystery. You'll probably be disappointed coming in with those expectations.

Nice mystery with likeable characters and a mixture of sass.
This makes the small southern town with its wacky inhabitants very enduring. Their presents help to develope of a conscience for a self absorbed city slicker.

Jaxi's boss Justin had an eye for her but she didn't think of him like that at the time. She was sent off to this little town Rumton to spark up some business and make the town more for visitors to come to. She ended up staying at Pops house a big old house with a racoon and a dog. The racoon like to snatch goodies off the table which irritated Jaxi. This town was a slow quiet kind of town. Everyone knew everyone. There used to a open canal that came into Rumton but now was closed up and no boats had a way to come to their town in a boat. So Avery did some research and found parts of a old sunken pirate ship deep down. They thought if it could be brought up maybe the canal will open again for boats. It used be a good shrimp and crab spot. But someone was sneaky and trying to con some of the towns people out of their land. Jaxi got the goods on him finally and thats when the trouble really starts for her and Rumton.
