When a double agent in Cuba suddenly disappears, there's a concern that he might have gone rogue, working against Room 59 and the world at large. But one of the agency's top spymasters has a blood tie to the operative in question, which leaves him with an agonizing choice: allow the mission to be scrubbed, and leave thousands to die in the resulting bloodbath--or risk everything he knows, including his career, to keep his secret deeply buried.
THE PLAYERS
Room 59 is a multinational policing agency sanctioned to terminate global threats that governments can't touch. Its high-level operatives are seasoned in the dangerous game of espionage and counterterrorism. A Room 59 mission puts everything on the line; emotions run high, and so does the body count.
I do like Black Ops books and I am happy to report the the new Room 59 Series may be just the thing I was looking for. The Powers That Be by Cliff Ryder is an action-packed adventure into the poor and grimy world of Communist Cuba and gun-running.
I really enjoyed reading about Room 59 agents and found the plot of the story to be quite exciting. The last hundred pages of the book are action-packed, and the speed picks up to an explosive conclusion.
At first, I thought that the story would be more about Marcus Ruiz infiltrating Cuba, but it turns out the main character of the story is Jonas Schrader and his setting up a sting on Rafael Castilo. Although the book doesn't have an intricate plot, the storyline is a good one and up-to-date with current events in Cuba.
Overall, I must say that I quite enjoyed The Powers That Be and cannot wait to read more thrilling adventures of Room 59 agents as they take down the bad guys and keep America safe. Terrorists beware as there is a new player on the block who doesn't take gumption from anyone.
When i received this book it was via a free giveaway at the San Diego Comic-Con several years ago. I had no idea what Room 59 was, i only knew that it was a "spy thriller". I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed this book. It kind of made me which I hadn't waited so long to read it. I found it very engaging with an interesting twist towards the end. I would recommend this book to anyone that is a fan of the genre.
About as close to real espionage as 24, and almost as ludicrously entertaining. It takes a little while to introduce all of the characters and the plot. But, once it gets going, it's a pretty good ride.
