A good book, AMAZING Character Growth…
But I can’t honestly give this book more than 3 Stars and I’m going to do my best to explain why without spoilers as best as I can…
This is my first book by this author and despite my following review, it will not be my last.
Repetition: there is a lot of repetition in this book. A lot of repeated or very similar inner dialogue, conversation and sex scenes. While the first couple sex scenes are scorching hot, they become one and the same after a while.
As Lucas grows as a character and as a person throughout this book, his inner monologue and dialogue almost becomes like a copy/paste by the author. Many times it is the same speech, just different arrangements of words. Sometimes there is a bit of growth in the words, but a lot of times, it becomes rather mundane and not as interesting the further into the book you get. Though there are a lot of moments of breakthrough that are seen and articulated better through Savanah’s eyes that portray the beautiful growth in Lucas as the book progresses, which makes Lucas a beautiful MMC on my eyes.
Plot Holes and Unfinished Story ARCs: the author opens up A LOT of story lines and shuts them down without ever finishing them.
Catherine - what was the point of the dinner? Did Savanah ever give Lucas her letter? What was in the letter?
Lucas’s Father - before the book ended… there were questions in my mind surrounding his health and how he was faring, but yet the epilogue- which time jumps significantly, makes absolutely no mention of him.
A Name Change? The implication of what that means is there but absolutely zero mention of how, when, where…
His Board of Directors? Brought up and completely glossed over like it was nothing.
Zoe?
Her apartment?
These were all things the author makes secondary characters of throughout the story and yet nothing ever comes of them, leaving too many unanswered questions for my liking.
Lastly… I LOVE the secret baby… unplanned pregnancy trope. It’s one of my all time favorites to read… what I will never understand is A- authors who have genuine, honest reactions of undiluted joy from their heroes- who wish to love and worship their heroines - why they put these reactions so far at the end of their stories? Why they make the pregnancy a joy for the couple, something they love and celebrate and who have men who adore their women and the entire pregnancy is just glossed over. We go from a couple weeks, maybe a couple months pregnant to boom… baby’s here in an epilogue.
Or B- the opposite. Men who are overjoyed with the idea and yet make no acknowledgment of the pregnancy. Oh, you’re pregnant, that’s amazing, let’s have sex, with no further mention of the pregnancy.
If you’re going to do a secret baby/surprise pregnancy trope and give your men joyful reactions… embrace it. Love it and enjoy it. Stop shoving it to the back of the book then jumping ahead months later to boom your kid is one years old.
This is just my honest opinion promises in exchange for an ARC of the author’s work.
