My Ex-Girlfriend's Wedding: A sapphic romcom with a sprinkling of magic

Rate this book
❤️🌙🔮 A romcom for the modern age filled with magic, heart and the absurdities of the sapphic dating scene. 🔮🌙❤️

Hope has nothing going for her. She's in a job she hates, she's been forced to quit her band after losing the ability to play guitar and, to make matters worse, her ex – the love of her life, Julia – is now getting married to her best friend's ex (messy, right?). But there's one silver Hope has been invited to play at their wedding... and she's going to get Julia back.

However, the road to true love is never easy, and Hope's journey is blocked by tarot readers, hen parties, visions from the past and, worst of all, Ruby. With their big eyes and extremely kissable mouth, Ruby is new to London's convoluted queer scene and a much-needed breath of fresh air for Hope.

Will Hope win back the woman she loves, or does the universe have something else in store?

✨️ Perfect for fans of Looking for a Sign by Susie Dumond, Funny Story by Emily Henry and The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston, with notes of Really Good, Actually by Monica Heisey. ✨️

'Equal parts juicy lesbian drama and quick-witted comedy, My Ex-Girlfriend's Wedding is exactly the kind of romance I love most. 'Crawford's witty debut is a sly take on the romcom, weaving in the supernatural to capture love's uncanny magic' - ANNA DORN, author of Perfume and Pain

'Brilliantly astute, witty and heartfelt. My Ex-Girlfriend's Wedding is a razor-sharp window into the dangerously small world of lesbian London. It made me cackle' - LAURA KAY, author of Making It

'A lovingly sharp satire of London lesbian life, anchored by a heroine you can't help but root for, and threaded with a touch of the otherworldly, make this a unique and memorable debut' - ZAC HAMMETT, author of See You At The Finish Line

'Full of wit, chaos and charm... Crawford is a brilliant new talent, with a sharp eye and an even sharper pen' - CHARLIE GILMOUR, author of Featherhood

The blurb sounded so good and interesting. The combination of romance and magic—doesn't that sound wonderful? But somehow I couldn't warm to the author's writing style and couldn't connect with the story. It was written in such a confusing way in parts and jumped back and forth in time, so that I sometimes really lost track and didn't know whether it was the present or the past. I also didn't find the connection between romance and the supernatural/magic that great. On the other hand, Ruby was so lovely and I really hoped that she and Hope would get together.

All in all, the book didn't blow me away. But I'm sure others will like it... so if you like the supernatural and romance, then you should read it for yourself. :)

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

What’s not to like? This queer romcom set in London has elements of tarot, supernatural guidance, an unknown spirit in the office basement, circus performers and a wedding!

This book is at its best when it’s delivering relatable interactions and character traits from London’s queer communities, then stretching them to the extreme and mixing them with supernatural/magic elements.

The protagonist was a mix of relatable but also chaotic, and her questionable choices over the course of the story are a big driver in the progression. The side characters were a mixed bag for me, but the variety means that there’s bound to be a few that you’ll like and a few that you won’t.

In classic rom-com style, some plot points are completely unbelievable, but this fits with the light and playful tone of the novel.

My main critical point would be in the build up to the novel's climax, as things felt fairly flat the whole way through.

Recommended to anyone who wants a quick and easy read that dives into the varied circles that queer people living in cities end up navigating in their 20s and 30s!

I had a blast reading this and absolutely devoured it in days. (I would have been quicker if I hadn't have to fight off my boyfriend who kept stealing it from me to read it himself).
A fun, easy, feel good read was exactly what I needed, can't recommend it enough!

A welcome read at a time where all my books felt boring. It was a pleasure to follow Hope's chaotic romantic adventures and discover a whole gallery of quirky lesbian characters (special mention for Ruby, love them and the squish fish arc). The perfect queer rom-com, a fun and easy read.

This was exactly the kind of delightfully chaotic sapphic romcom I live for! Full of messy emotions, questionable decisions, tarot cards, and just the right sprinkle of ✨magic✨.

Hope is down bad. Like, really down bad. Her ex (aka the love of her life) is marrying her best friend’s ex (because of course she is).

She’s stuck in a dead end job, can’t play guitar anymore, and somehow ends up invited to play at the wedding. Cue the drama, the heartbreak, and the kind of queer chaos that can only end in either disaster… or self-discovery.

And then there’s Ruby... all big eyes, sharp wit, and “maybe the universe has other plans” energy.

Watching Hope try to win Julia back while literally tripping over fate (and Ruby) was both hilarious and unexpectedly touching.

Sophie Crawford perfectly captures the absurdities of the modern sapphic dating scene. The awkward meet cutes, the ex overlap, the unspoken “everyone’s dated everyone” rule and turns it into something funny, magical, and tender.

If you love:
💅 queer chaos
🎸 music + heartbreak
🃏 a dash of magic
💖 “the universe knows better than you” tropes
😂 LOL wit and inner monologue that gets it

Then My Ex-Girlfriend’s Wedding will absolutely be your next favorite messy, magical comfort read.

Sophie Crawford delivers a chaotic, charming and unexpectedly emotional rom-com. Following a deeply flawed (but weirdly lovable) protagonist determined to crash her ex’s wedding, the story mixes laugh-out-loud moments with genuine heart. What could’ve been pure chaos becomes a sharp, heartfelt look at self-growth, second chances and learning when to hold on and when to finally let go.

Crawford’s humor sparkles, the side characters bring so much warmth and personality and the emotional payoff is chef’s kiss! A perfectly messy and thoroughly entertaining read.

Loved it!

Hope’s story was crazy and convoluted and I ended up loving her.

There was something for everyone in this novel and I especially loved all of the music bits, entirely reliving my teen years of going to dark, dank, and frankly, sticky, gigs.

Found the tarot readings really interesting and the “alarm” the psychic used was intense - not sure I would be signing up!

There was fun, laughter (especially with Katie and her work exorcism) and love - 5 star read for me!

Unfortunately this wasn't a hit for me. The writing style sadly didn't grab me as much as I had hoped. I love the plot for this book based on the blurb but found that it took a bit too long to get going. The supernatural thread I wished had been introduced sooner. I definitely think this will be a great choice for slow burn readers but not for me I'm afraid.

This was quite a sweet, easy read. I really liked Hope and Anna’s friendship and also the troubles Hope was having with her career and her identity wrapped up in that. I really didn’t like Julia, she was selfish and pretentious and I think the author wrote her well.

Loved the humour and the supernatural thread throughout this novel! On top of that, witnessing (main character) Hope transform has been beautiful

A witty, chaotic sapphic romcom that leans heavily into the drama and absurdities of queer dating culture. Hope is a HR Assistant/struggling musician who’s lost her spark and is unmotivated in life. Then she’s invited to play at her exes wedding. Hope sees this as an opportunity to get Julia back and realise she should be marrying her instead. The problem is her best friend thinks it’s a terrible idea and will only end in heartache.
This story has plenty of humour throughout but I did struggle with some of Hope’s choices. I would never dream of going to an exes wedding if I still had feelings for them so for me it did stretch believability. I also found that it played into queer dating stereotypes in that everyone’s exes overlap and that they are spiritual in some way (not too mention vegan).
The story is full of charm and if you’re looking for some escapism then I’d definitely give this a go.
