As the internet has given us venues to interact with people around the Globe, my interest in some of the lesser known countries' history has been growing. I'll admit to not being very familiar with Bulgaria's past or present, beyond a little bit about their role in the World Wars. As often with these "captivating" installments, I'm not entirely sure how accurate the whole thing is. Another issue is that the book seems to have a fair amount of filler where they need to focus for several pages on rehashing Greek, Roman, Ottoman, Russian etc. history which often reads like filler information. Such things are always important in some way for contextualization, but it reads more like Bulgaria is apparently taking a back seat in its own history. That being said, it was one of the better written installments and followed the shifting power dynamics from the late 19th century to the present with good clarity. I am interested to learn more about Bulgaria in the future and that is the mark of a good intro book.

This was a fascinating read. Although much of the information can be found on Wikipedia, the book is put together in a way which is both interesting and logical. What made me give it five stars instead of four is the section on the Bulgarian Empire. It caught my imagination. King Simeon was particularly interesting. Overall, a good read.

An amazing display of resiliency.

One idea th
at stuck with me throughout this reading was how resilient the Bulgarian peoples have been throughout history. Whether facing attacks from within or from the outside, the Bulgarians continue to bounce back. Now, the Bulgarian State is ready to be an active member of the European Union.

I loved reading about the origins and founding of Bulgaria and how the

brutal centuries under Ottoman domination which is something I didn't know about along with the fierce fighting for liberation in the 19th century. There is so much more that this book offers and makes a great reference to have on hand for Bulgaria's History.
