“Play the part. Play the game. Get what you came for.”
Dafni Sarracenia has escaped her mother’s wrath and set out on her own for the first time in her life. Armed with the knowledge that she’s overpowered her mother, Matilda, she plans to take over her Coven—a task that proves more difficult than Dafni realized.
The first steps to power in the witches’ Coven is infiltrating the Academy, where all witches go to hone their magical skills. Dafni quickly learns Matilda’s darkness has infected the Coven, forcing them into hiding underground—their marred faces looking like the wicked witches she’s only read about in fairy tales. If Dafni has any hope of taking over the Coven, she’ll have to save the witches from this horrific fate. As if that weren’t enough, this year they must compete for a coveted a place at the side of one of the Coven’s only male witches.
Either I’d pick a partner or escape. My hope was on the latter.
As a rare male witch, Gideon has known since birth that he has a place of importance in his Coven. But for all its prestige, his life is a lonely one. The witches in the Coven want him for one thing, and it’s not his personality. For years he’s struggled to accept his forced role of stud within the Coven, and now that the time for him to select a partner is approaching, he must decide if he’s truly going through with it or find means to escape.
When Dafni arrives at the Academy, Gideon realizes the answer to his problems might be her.
“If you’re honest with yourself, I think you’ll find that there’s rage deep down inside of you…it’s within all of us women.”
The closer Dafni and Gideon become, the more dangerous this underground world becomes for them. There are witches who set out to control Gideon, others who will do whatever it takes to defeat Dafni. As she struggles to keep her found family safe in her mission, she fears she’s not as powerful as she thought.
But if Dafni can learn to embrace her powerful rage, then she might be able to save not only herself and Gideon but their entire Coven.
Magic in the Woods is the third book in the paranormal series the North Woods, featuring witches, a magical academy, feminine rage, and found family. There is adult content; see author’s website for a full list of content warnings. Perfect for fans of Heather Guerre and Juliette Cross!
I loved this story! A lot more than the first two books! I found it hard to put down once I picked it up.
Seeing Dafni grow into a determined and strong headed woman and getting a deeper look into the world and tying everything together between the witches and werewolves.
The one thing I struggled with was the pacing of the book, it was very slow in the beginning but felt rushed towards the end. Once Dafni was in the academy, everything went by too quickly for me. I know this is a shorter book, so that may be why the trials went by quickly. Plus the relationship between Dafni and Gideon developed quickly. In the same breath, she would say Gideon needs to prove himself to her to trusting him.
Overall, I ate this book up and I’m excited to see where Evi takes this series.
I loved Evi’s new book “Magic In The Woods”! Can I just say that Dafni in this book was BAD-A$$?! She defied her mother, didn’t let a man (or literally anyone else) take her down, and is a witch!! Super powerful trio she’s got going on. I really enjoyed that Evi built off of the plot from her previous novels and entwined previous characters into the book! The storyline with Gideon (MMC) was suuuper tense and really only was spicy a couple of times in the book but that just made him more of a wanted character! Thanks to Evi James for letting me read an ARC of her book - so excited for what she has planned next!
Evi does it AGAIN! I have been absolutely hooked on this series, and this third book did not disappoint. The seamless transition between characters' stories was done flawlessly while all still tying together with the first two books is masterful.
I absolutely loved learning more about Dafni and how her story develops. The feminine rage and found family aspect is so potent and hooks you right in. I loved learning about the Coven and how Evi balanced complete understanding of how it works without bogging down readers with immense world building. This book is perfectly paced and easy to read and understand for any level of fantasy reader.
Gideon is so perfectly portrayed, and I was rooting for him right from the start. His personality shines through, and his perseverance is heart-stopping. His little quirks add so much character to him. The story wraps up with a neat little bow, making this technically a completed series but with just enough info to NEED a fourth book. I'll beg if I have to Evi!!
I was so dang excited to read this book, especially during this season and it did not disappoint. There is so much going on this one, that had you at the edge of your seat on what was going to happen. I really enjoyed this so much, and I would have easily binged this one if I had the time too. It does end on a cliffhanger, and that’s okay because I am sat at the edge of my seat waiting patiently for the next one. This one has the perfect vibes for this time of the season, but anytime you need a cozy fall read it would hit so well.
Would I recommend? Definitely, this series is so good and I think each book is just getting better and better that has me falling more and more in love with the story and characters.
ARC Review, thank you Evi James for allowing me to read your story. I have loved this series (The North Woods) since the very first book, it draws you in and holds on tight; Magic in the Woods is no exception.
Magic in the Woods takes place directly after the second book in the series, with our FMC taking off to find her place in the coven since her dearly NOT-beloved mother is frozen in a bucket. This story is full of magic, yearning and witchy trials, what more could you want? How about a hot male witch that has lived only underground in the coven academy and has no sense of the world above but has his sights set on our FMC.
I love Evi's writing, she does an amazing job with character growth, world building and capturing you from the beginning. My only complaint is I wish the story was longer, I could have used way more Dafni and Gideon in my life.
Magic in the Woods follows Dafni on her journey into the world and the Academy. She finds more out about herself, her magic, and the world her mother (Matilda) didn’t want her to be apart of.
While in the Academy she meets Gideon, the only male witch and his instant attraction to her is so intriguing. You can just tell from the beginning that they are made to lead together.
It is a definite must to read Entangled in the Woods and Shadows in the woods to really understand what’s going on as the whole North Woods world is intertwined.

ARC review🌟 Thank you Evi for letting me be a part of the ARC team! I really enjoy Evi's writing. The characters and world building really makes me feel like I am in the story. I am absolutely obsessed with this series! It was the most perfect time to get this book, just in time for spooky season. Taking place exactly where the second book in the series left off, I appreciated being reminded that she had her mom frozen as a cat in her bucket. It was a bit of a slower start for me, but once Dafni gets to the academy it really takes off.
Evi James’ Magic in the Woods is one of those books that started off a little uneven but gradually won me over. There’s definite promise in the worldbuilding, the magical elements, and the characters - but some early pacing and repetition held it back from really landing immediately.
What didn't work for me at first:
The repetition, especially in the early chapters - e.g., Dafni’s mom in cat form frozen in a pail - was overused, and it felt like the same note being struck many times.
The beginning chapters felt unsure; I kept wondering when the story would settle in.
What improved and eventually worked well:
The further I got (past those early chapters) the writing sharpened, the repetitive bits tapered off, and the emotional stakes picked up.
Dafni’s character arc, particularly, becomes interesting; I found myself caring about her and wanting to see how her plotline resolved.
The magic + woods + secrets vibe is atmospheric and compelling once the story finds its footing.
In comparison to other reader feedback: Some reviews I skimmed noted similar issues - premise and ideas praised, but early pacing or over-explanation slowing things down. Others appreciated how things grew stronger with time, especially where characters’ internal growth and the mystery in the woods began to unfold. Those echoes match my journey with this book.
Overall impression: I’d recommend this one, especially to readers who don’t mind a sluggish start in exchange for a more rewarding mid-to-late section. Maybe not perfect, but it’s got enough magic, curiosity, and emotional pull to make sticking with it worthwhile.
Phew! This book had me spellbound from page one and grinning like a fool by the end! If you’ve ever felt underestimated, doubted, or just plain stuck, Magic in the Woods is your reminder that your power isn’t up for debate…it’s waiting to be CLAIMED, baby!
🔥 Dafni is THAT girl. She’s not just a force to be reckoned with, she’s the storm, the spark, and the silence before the boom. Watching her rise, stumble, and rise again had me fist-pumping on my couch, lol. And Gideon? Let’s just say the tension between them is chef’s kiss. The push and pull, the “I got you” and “don’t test me”….I was living for it! Their chemistry is the kind that makes you reread scenes just to feel the burn again.
🌿 The deeper magic? The message. This story doesn’t just enchant, it literally empowers! It whispers to every part of you that’s been told “you can’t” and answers back with “WATCH ME.” Dafni’s journey proves that your struggles don’t define you, and the doubters? Pssh, they’re just background noise to your come up!
😄 And that ending? BABY. I was cheesing so hard I had to close the book and just sit with the joy. No spoilers, but trust me…once you read it, you’ll know exactly why I’m still smiling. I highly HIGHLY recommend this one. It’s magic, it’s heart, it’s heat, and it’s healing.
Now excuse me while I go manifest a mossy cottage, a moonlit spell circle, and a bestie who knows her way around a cauldron!! 🧙♀️💫
I have been waiting for this book after reading Entangled and Shadows in the Woods! (If you haven't read them, please do so as Magic in the Woods is a continuation of that series.) This book is worth the wait!
Dafni is a cursed witch. When her curse if broken, she follows her destiny to become prime for her coven. Destiny, however, has other plans when she is found by a family that helps her heal in more ways than one. She tumbles into an academy where she has to compete for a rare male witch who has to choose a life partner to secure the bloodlines. One that Dafni has no interest in doing. Determined to stay focused, she steers clear of the mysterious witch, but her heart has other plans.
Gideon is a rare male with a strange affliction has been secluded in a coven full of crazed witches that would do anything to become his life partner. He finds himself bewitched by a red head who wants nothing to do with him. Intrigued by her prickly personality. Realizing that there is more to life than what his raised to believe, risking his heart and destiny for a chance of true happiness.
Evi does an amazing job word building and creating a feeling of cozy, sweet and snark. I loved Dafni's independent personality as she is learning along with Gideon about what family really means.
Read this if you like found family, witches, potions, magic, trials and found family. The perfect cozy fall read!
This was another fantastic adventure in the North Woods series! While this one takes a detour from our beloved shifters, book three cranks up the magic and keeps the mysteries swirling! It starts off a bit slower than the first two, but once it gets going, you’ll be hooked. It’s impossible to put down, and I raced through it in just a few hours!
Dafni’s journey as she steps out from the safety of the pack with the intention of leading her mother’s coven is absolutely enchanting. She’s totally unprepared at first, but watching her grow, tap into her powers, and figure out who she wants to become was captivating and had me cheering her on.
Gideon, the rare, elusive, and highly coveted male witch, is such an exciting and compelling character! Growing up hidden away in the academy, he’s full of surprises, and his journey is just as thrilling as Dafni’s. The sparks between them practically leap off the page. I love his relentless pursuit of Dafni, even with every other witch vying for his attention. Their chemistry is off the charts!
Magic in the Woods delivers everything I need: magical chaos, heated competitions for Gideon’s attention, strong friendships, mysterious twists, and enough surprises to keep me on the edge of my seat!
I wasn’t sure if I was going to like the switch from the wolf shifters to the witches storyline but I absolutely loved it. First of all, the witches are SUPER disturbing and the Academy is an actual nuthouse. The way Dafni made her way to the Academy was really amazing and I loved the help she got from her found family in getting there. Once she got there it became pretty clear that her plan to take over the Coven wasn’t going to be as easy as she was expecting. I loved that Dafni didn’t let the Academy and the way the other witches acted change who she was and the way she acted in a negative way. Gideon was really wonderful and he was in such a difficult position at the Academy as one of very few male witches and the expectations that he become a stud to further the witch population was lunacy. Seeing the two of them learn to trust each other and work together was really heartwarming and there wasn’t a lot of spice in this but the bit we got was good regardless. The final evaluation day was absolutely wild and it started and ended way differently than I expected and it was EXTREMELY satisfying. The epilogue was chef’s kiss and I loved how it brought the story full circle and I can’t wait to see how the series ends.
✨ ARC REVIEW: Magic in the Woods ✨ (North Woods Series, Book 3) by Evi James 3⭐️ 1🌶️
I was lucky enough to dive into Dafni’s story, and let me tell you, it was the smooth, seamless transition from book two I desperately needed! I’ve been obsessed with Dafni since we first met her, and she absolutely comes into her own as the badass witchling I knew she would be.
The story has a unique storyline and strong characters, but the real star here is the romance. The chemistry between Dafni and Gideon is HOT! 🔥 Their intense connection truly carries the book and makes for a super engaging read.
The Honest Take: While the plot and steam captured my attention, the story is lacking in depth. I felt like there was a huge missed opportunity to strengthen the world-building and flesh out the character and relationship development. This story has the potential to be truly great, and I just wished for more meat on the bones!
VERDICT: Despite wanting more depth, this was a highly enjoyable, fast-paced read driven by fantastic tension. If you love a unique fantasy romance with sizzling chemistry, this is one to add to your radar for release day! I’ll definitely be recommending this one to my friends. I hope there’s more to their story 🖤❤️
When I first opened the book, I was so confused. Our FMC just busted out of a wolf shifter house running for her life, carrying a pale with a frozen cat inside. She is full of gusto and adrenaline as she sets off on an unknown quest to find a coven and become the leader. I actually had to double check to make sure I was reading the right book because my initial thoughts were “wait…what??”
Halfway in her journey, she is running low on energy, physical strength and time. A strange boy finds her and takes her in. What happens next is what has our girl Dafni competing in a magical school to best the rest of the students and become the chosen and the leader.
I thoroughly enjoyed this read and its unpredictability. I truly had no idea what was going to come next and pleasantly got sucked in to the storyline and characters. Even though the interactions between our FMC Dafni and our MMC Gideon didn’t take up the entire storyline, I did find myself rooting for their relationship development.
All in all, this was a fun and enjoyable read for anyone looking for a low stakes stubborn FMC witchy magical school trope.
I absolutely loveddd this story! Watching Dafni grow into herself and seeing how the academy runs is such a nice view into the world, and how they interact with each other. My rating is 3 stars because there felt to be a lot of repetition in the writing and reviewing of what happened a page or two before. I was also confused as to where the "kitten" nickname come from, it is assumed by Dafni that Gideon saw her transform but not actually explained if she had or not. The book also felt a tad rushed, the strengthening of the realtionship between the two, the time at the academy, and the competition all seemed to quickly go by, whereas the introduction of Luke and his family had a lovely pace to it.
Despite my above dislikes of the writing, I did absolutely enjoy the story and devoured it in one sitting. I could not get enough and just wanted to read more and more! I just feel as if it could be fleshed out a hair more. Thank you to Evi James and Book Funnel for the ARC and a chance to dive into the woods, I can't wait to see where else Dafni and everyone go!
I really enjoyed this story with the FMC Dafni really coming into her own and the MMC Giddeon not only trying to gain her trust (I love it when he falls first!) but also even though he is quite powerful, he wants to stand to her side and watch her burn the whole world down with his assistance, not do it for her.
The little twist towards the end to tie back into the series was fantastic, but I really enjoyed this insight into the coven's world and the academy.
I also found the addition of the ugliness of the witches to be really funny. There's a reason for it, but I was just picturing every evil with character from bad movies and giggling every time they tried to intimidate Dafni.
I do wish the book was longer. I wanted to spend more time in the academy and learn more about Giddeon and Dafni. I wanted him to grovel more and earn her trust. The story was still really great and I will be reading the rest of the series because I really enjoyed the writing style, but just a bit more would have elevated this book in my opinion.
Oh my gosh, I absolutely loved this one! I am a huge fan of this author and the way she writes, so I’m always anticipating the next book. I loved how this was its own story, (with more new characters) but that it also tied into the first 2 books. I love a good witchy/magical vibe book, and this one kept me intruiged from the first page. There was definitely some twists and turns, and at no point did I know how it was all going to tie together. But it all tied together beautifully. I just loved the plot, the witch trials, and the dark academia vibes. I fell in love with all the characters from the first two books. So having it all tie together at the end definitely brought a little tear to my eye lol. Definitely another binge-able 5 star read for me from Evi. Now I feel like I need more Gideon and Dafni! Make sure you check out the first 2 books in her North Woods Series first! Thank you for allowing me to be an early reader!
More like a 3.5, the story was cute. I did not read the first two books but I feel like I didn't miss too much cause the story was fairly contained within Dafni's journey as a fledgling witch. My main complaints are that things are rather predictable and the relationships are a tad shallow but it's a short story that's easy to read. I would have liked the witch academy fleshed out a little more and the trials to be more elaborated on but I did enjoy the setting overall. I feel like the ending is slightly lacking as I still have a lot of questions of what will happen next and wish the romance can have more growth in it. I will probably read the next book to see what will happen to Dani if it continues to cover her story. I know the previous two books focused on a different heroine so I'm not too sure. A super minor complaint is that Gideon calls her kitten as a nickname and it's a personal ick when romances use these pet names.
This was an enjoyable story and I loved getting more info about Dafni in this one. I also enjoyed Gideon's character and loved watching everything with the 2 unfold. The beginning was a bit slow for me but that's fine, it picked up and went straight into all the fun. The author does a fantastic job of engrossing her readers into her story and making them want to continue consuming it and not realize it's done until.... it's done. The epilogue at the end definitely made me hunger for even more with the small glimpse we got of everyone and everything. The story leaves on... not a cliff hanger but open ended so as there might, maybe be more in the future from this world. Even if this is the worlds end I'm fine with that but will always dive back in if I ever hear there is another book. I'm definitely going to be reading more from this author as well.
Magic in the Woods by Evi James ended up being my favorite book in the series so far. While it starts a bit uneven, I was really glad to finally get more of Dafni’s story—something I’d been hoping for in earlier installments.
The early chapters suffer from pacing issues and some repetition, which made the beginning feel unsure of itself. Certain details are revisited often enough that they lose impact, and it took a little time for the story to find its rhythm.
Once it does, though, the book improves significantly. The writing sharpens, the emotional stakes rise, and Dafni’s character development becomes the highlight. I enjoyed watching her grow and was genuinely invested in how her storyline played out. The banter between Dafni and Gideon was another standout, adding warmth and personality to their dynamic.
Overall, I’d recommend this one to readers who don’t mind a slower start in exchange for a stronger middle and ending. Not perfect, but engaging, atmospheric, and ultimately very rewarding.
I loved this book! This may be one of my favorite books so far by Evi James. I loved the storyline, the nods to the first duology in this universe, and just the characters overall.
Dafni is such a fun character. I loved her journey, especially after her first POVs in Shadows in the Woods. Getting to see her come into her own felt empowering for her and the reader.
Gideon was so intriguing and I hope we get to see even more of him in future installments of this world. I think he was such a complex character that was just wanting someone to want him for him.
Evi James continues to build out this awesome world with characters that you can't get enough of. Excited to see what's next!
overall: recommend spice: low spice, but has small open door moment.
Magic in the Woods: felt real from the description of locations to the emotions of what the characters were feeling. Smooth transition from the pack to the coven. Be sure to check out books 1 & 2 as well otherwise things might not make sense. Duel POV, depth, finding strength, truth, friendship, light vs dark, connection.
The beginning was a bit slower paced but be sure to keep reading! However the ending… something seemed missing… maybe a book 4 ?..
Overall loved Magic in the Woods and recommend all three if you’re looking for easy reads, connection, wit, banter, strength, relatable characters in a world wolves and witches.
Thank you to Evi for the opportunity to receive an ARC of Magic in the Woods.
Book 3!! Witches!! The excitement I felt when I got my hands on this book! I was squealing!! From the first page to the last I was consumed! I love the setting I love how it built off of book 2 and the characters in this story really pushed you to need to know more. And the MMC gosh I just loved everything about him and how his character built so effortlessly. A lot of the time it’s always the same MMC type constantly and this was a breath of fresh air.I’m going to be honest this is my favorite book out of the series. I loved it. This can’t be the end! I need to live in this story more!! Bravo-Kerin Ray
Following Dafni into her own to find her people and make things better for them and herself. Knowing the horror and destruction her mother invokes on others Dafni knows she must find her people and make things right for them , learning her own strength along the way she risk herself and everything she knows to get to them and right the wrongs while she finds a place for love she never expected for her own heart…I have totally enjoyed this entire series and highly recommend reading all of them , it’s been a great adventure with characters that you will remember for a long time…
I think this is my favorite of the 3 books so far! Again another tight story, making for a quick read. I really enjoyed the witch academy, and how Evi James really expanded on the classic witch, making them full of depth rather than just wort covered, hook nosed, evil magic welding witches.
Also the potion brewing scene!? You'll know which one I'm talking about when you read it!
While Dafni is a naive character, which for some reason so many people are annoyed with that type of characteristic, Evi James really wrote her well and much like if any of us were thrown into Dafni's shoes.
“If you’re honest with yourself, I think you’ll find that there’s rage deep down inside of you…it’s within all of us women.”
Though i was an arc reader, this book is out now! The 3rd book in the "North Woods Series". It lived up to all the hype! It picks up right where book 2 leaves off, and follows Dafni. We have her mom frozen in a pail (as a cat), and she is on her own knowing only one thing. Dafni has to get to the coven, and take her place if anything will change. she meets unlikely friends to gain support, and helps her go undercover as a "human born witch", even though she isnt. Yet, that doesnt come without its own struggles. Her mother's cruel ways has infected the coven. We watch as she earns her place, makes changes for the better, and finally sticks up for herself. The female rage in this book was the perfect amount, and I was hooked from page 1. This also has breaking generational curses, and healing. If you think you're going to get "warm, fuzzy, save me vibes", this isnt that read. The only male witch is looking for hisnmate this year. Dafni tries to stay away, and ignore Gideon. Yet, I love their dynamic that grows. Plus the way it ties into the other two books, evi done an amazing job. good pace, good plot, and characters you want to root for. except petunia..we dont like her.
The third instalment of The North Wood series follows Dafni, a naive witch determined to take control of a coven and academy currently run by her cruel mother. Alongside this, there’s a tournament of sorts to secure a relationship with the youngest male witch.
This book is fun and quirky, there’s found family and some spicy romance. Although this book follows new people, there are still nods to the previous books and the ending brings it all back together.
On her own for the first time after escaping her mother's wrath, Dafni sets out to take over the coven but it's not that simple. I loved seeing Dafni grow and how determined she was to become herself. I also loved Gideon he was so obsessed with her, and he called her kitten! It was easy to love him. He's more than who they think he is. The chemistry between them was on fire. The trials and dark academia vibes with all the twists made it such an exciting fun read. I absolutely love Evi's writing i never know what to expect she always leaves me guessing and craving for more.
I loved this! It's a beautiful take on overcoming "mean girls", selfishness, loneliness. I loved all the hidden themes and the way the story unfolded. I honestly loved this third book the most in the series. It was so emotionally raw but also so healing. It broke my heart wide open for both Dafni and Gideon. I loved them so much as the fmc and mmc. Their chemistry was o.m.g. so delicious. I loved the funny bantering bits too. Evi does such an amazing job weaving all these little parts of the story together to make such a beautiful tale. Loved loved loved this!!!
Just finished Magic in the Woods by Evi James and loved it. If you love a spicy paranormal romance that dives deep into witchy lore and shifters, this book (the third in The North Woods series) is a perfect escape.
I love world building and this had it! While the pacing overall was good, there were a few spots where the plot felt a little drawn out, especially early on as Dafni was still figuring things out. But once the action and the magic really kicked in, I was completely hooked! It’s highly recommended, but be aware this is definitely for adult readers (18+ content)! 😉
