You're restless. Trouble has you gasping beside the narrow road. This is your invitation back to the adventure.
Some Christians leave their relationship with God in a sealed box like a collectible that will be worth something "someday." Not you. You wholeheartedly answered the call to follow Him into the great adventure.
Then, something unexpected happened that left you gasping beside the narrow road. You thought you were following Jesus but now it feels as if all you're doing is running from a crazy man. Even knocked down, though, you seek the strength to continue the journey.
This isn't a book for the happily comfortable. This is a book for the restless Jesus lover, the longsuffering disciple, the openhearted believer. Be forewarned. The challenges inside are designed to unsettle you as well as provide practical suggestions for thriving on the narrow road even if trouble is your travel companion.
Running from a Crazy Man (and Other Adventures Traveling with Jesus) is a siren call to the modern believer that the God-adventure can happen even when, like King David, you re running from a crazy man.

Deb’s Dozen: 12-Word Summaries - Running from a Crazy Man (and other adventures traveling with Jesus) AMEN!
I met Lori Roeleveld at the New England Writers’ Conference a few weeks ago. I attended her workshop on Blogging—you see, I’d love to see PositiveGrace.com become the go-to blog for readers of Christian books. I learned much from Lori that day—not the least of which was that I write not for you nor for myself nor for fame nor for fortune, but for my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Lori asked me if I’d review her book, the title of which, and my comment on the contents, appears in Deb’s Dozen. I should have remembered that lesson I’d learned (AGAIN!) at her feet those few weeks ago. Instead, I picked up her book—saw the incredible number of chapters—and indulged myself in a huge sigh—SIGH!
Then I started reading. God humbled me as I read the words that Lori penned. The words are rich and beautiful and so expressive—and they pierced my soul deeply. The first indications that I was in for a crazy ride (should have been the title, but sometimes I’m slow!) were her words in a chapter entitled Beautiful Impossibilities. Jesus calls us to beautiful impossibilities every day because we’re not actually here to accomplish something. We are here to be something—broken, faithful, devoted, true, enduring, patient, loving, sacrificing, joyful in affliction, given over to Christ and to others in His name. I had to learn that lesson when I learned to just be. I wanted to be on the platform speaking for Him, teaching for Him at retreats and conferences….He called me from that to just be—to just be Deb. Lori reminded me of that.
Another truth: Maybe you’ve blown it. Maybe you’ve blown it big. A little temptation, a small indulgence left unrepented gave birth to full-on, life-changing sin, and now, you’re afraid there’s no way to come home….Don’t let the dealer of your brokenness convince you to stay hooked on sin with the lie you can’t go home again. Home is waiting for your call. Your Father will save you in a heartbeat.
I’m feeling my age these days, but Lori summed up how I feel so succinctly. You’re tired. Tired of trying. Tired of failing. Tired of yourself. And then gently reminded me from Isaiah 46.4: Even to your old age I am He, and to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save.
Those are but three of the powerful illustrations from the book—there are many, many more. Running from a Crazy Man is one book that will remain in my library to be re-read time and time again. Thank you, Lori—for remaining true to your calling and writing the words that the Lord wants so many of us to hear!
You will want to buy Lori's book - several copies (you'll want all your friends to read the book, too) - and subscribe to her blog: http://www.loriroeleveld.com.
Lori Stanley Roeleveld provided me with an advance reader copy of Running From a Crazy Man in exchange for my unbiased review (and I am ever so grateful for the gift!).
This book spoke to me in ways I didn’t expect. I will no longer look at light or armor the same way. Recommended this book if you’re looking for something to bring you closer to Christ.
Roeleveld spins you around, turns you on your head, makes you take a deep look at yourself as a Christian, pinpoints our mere humanness ... and then she loving embraces you and invites you - no encourages you - to join her in the battle. Do you attend church every Sunday without fail? Not enough. Volunteer in your church and community? Not enough. Pray every night? Not enough. Because the crux of the matter is that we can never do enough for Him who has given us eternal life.
Like Gandalf guiding Frodo, Roeleveld instructs us, shares her own failures with us and loves us in our journey. Feeling unloved or unloveable? She has been there. Wondering if God actually has a purpose for someone as sinful as you? She has been there. And still she encourages herself and us to do more in His Name.
This is a book I will refer to again and again; I encourage and challenge you to read it. The only bad part of Running From a Crazy Man is that it had to end.
I can't say enough about this book. When I can get my hands on a copy, I'm sure my highlighter will run out of ink. As it is, my walls are dotted with Post-It notes that give me an injection of humility, a shot of courage, and all the Truth I can handle.Lori is a not only the honest look-you-straight-in-the-eye-over-coffee-and-hard-conversation friend, but she's the woman next to me in the trenches.
Some writers are truly gifted at writing, but leave you wondering if they really know their topic. In "Running from a Crazy Man", Lori Stanley Roeleveld leaves the reader with no doubts at all, for her heart has been changed by her own experience in each segment shared, and it shows!
This collection is culled primarily from her blog posts, and touches on almost every topic that has nibbled at our own thoughts, challenged or even crippled our own mindset, or been shouted at us from the headlines of our day. The Holy Spirit has filled Lori with the ability to reach us in our innermost places.....making us often uncomfortable with what we view as we turn the light of her words upon our current state, but never leaving us without the amazing answers to be found in God's amazing Grace!
The reader will leave "Running from a Crazy Man" with a sense that we are not alone in our struggles, fears, and challenges, and filled with hope that we serve a God who travels with us, always willing to guide us true and straight on the road Home.
I received a copy of this book through a Goodreads giveaway.
Lori has the same gift my "second mom" and devotional author Casandra Martin has: she can find a Biblical message in everyday events. It's incredible. She's also full of pop culture references that I know and love as a 25-year-old, and she's also full of snark. This is a fun read that happens to be full of truth at the same time.
You can read it like a devotional or straight through like a regular chapter book. Some chapters will hit you harder than others - it was #7 for me - but every one is at least a refresher course. Overall, I love Lori's heart, her lessons, and her writing. They come from God, but spoken through her voice they become relatable. And I love that.
This book takes an honest and challenging look at life, faith, and relationships. Roeleveld writes in a way that connects. She shares stories from her own life that gave me a chance to identify with her struggles and questions. Her examples made me think about my own beliefs and how they are (or aren’t) reflected in the way that I’m living. I was challenged to go deeper with life and not settle. This is a book that I’ll definitely go back and read again and again. It made me think and opened up new thoughts to me too. It would also make a great gift. I kept thinking “so and so” would like this book. It talks about faith and God, but it doesn’t force anything. And I think several of my friends would be blessed by this journey. So glad I read Running from a Crazy Man!
This one took me totally by surprise. I wasn’t familiar with Lori Stanley Roeleveld, but I’ve met Jim Rubart and Jerry Jenkins and trust their recommendations, so Running from a Crazy Man climbed high on my TBR list in a hurry. Especially since the subtitle is “and other adventures traveling with Jesus.” Oh. My. Goodness! I laughed. I cried. I had epiphanies and head-smack moments. I was convicted and shamed and edified and pat on the back–all from a book with chapter titles of “Waiting for the Holy Abracadabra,” “Mom, Why are My Knees Foaming?” “My Precious! Why All of You Annoy Me!” and, one of my personal favorites, “Elephant Repellant.” (Seriously–just read the TOC to be convinced you need to read this one!)
Fresh. Challenging. Insight-full. These words typify Lori Roeleveld's writing and this book is all that and then some. Read it for yourself and make sure you buy a couple extra copies because it will make a treasured gift.
Spoiler alert: the title sounds like it belongs to a thriller involving another morbid antagonist. It’s not. The subtitle indicates the crazy man is Jesus, you might want to label it sacrilegious. It’s not that either. When you open the cover and begin with the first page (and I hope you do), you will discover the vulnerable honesty of the writer’s growth in trusting the Lord.
Too often she (and we, too, if we can be as honest) reacts to what God is asking of her as if he has truly lost it. It makes no sense. It’s crazy. And a list of reasons reaching into next week why she doesn’t want to submit and trust. Other chapters start with the why and builds up our faith, deepens our understanding, and magnifies God’s image-nature-promises for us.
Some portions excited me so much I had to share from my Kindle onto Facebook. Other chapters I emailed myself so I could easily look them up and read them again. Her genuineness flowed into her acknowledgment pages, too. (I mean who ever reads them, right?) Yes, I read them. And I want to join her in thanking all those who helped—especially the one who returned to her hand the pen Roeleveld had thrown across the room.
My favorite: 16 Church Bullies. The author would like to know how do you rate yourself with religion?
I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.
A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written 70 different biblical faith questionable chapters (book). They were all very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great biblical movie, or better yet a mini TV series. It was just OK for me so I will rate it at 4/5 stars.

Lori Roeleveld’s Running from a Crazy Man—(And Other Adventures Traveling with Jesus) evokes both laughter and tears. Filled with true stories from her own crazy adventure, one feels as though she’s sitting down with Lori over warm cups of coffee. Her words are witty yet packed full of biblical wisdom. She’s humble yet hilarious! (Truly, I laughed and cried, sometimes within the span of only three pages!) A great devotional, too, RFACM is 70 chapters in length and ends with key thoughts to ponder and a power-packed repeat of one of her main points—always leaving readers with something to chew on and digest. It’s the perfect gift for someone considering the Christian faith as well as for the seasoned sojourner who’s waiting to meet our Savior face to face. Thank you, Lori Roeleveld, for this amazing read!
I am disabled and live with horrible chronic pain that even pain meds can’t touch, so obviously I deal with great loss and depression and this book came to me exactly when I needed it, the author touched on every emotion and pain I struggle with as a child of God expelling the myth that if you are saved you should never experience pain or suffering and that Jesus is there even when he falls silent in the valleys of our lives, and reminding me see my father in the wonders all around me. I would recommend this book to everyone, saved or unsaved, healthy or sick, deep connection with Jesus or have not yet found that all consuming love. It definitely falls in my top ten favorite books ever.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I downloaded this book. It only took 1 or 2 short chapters before I realized I had a gem in my hands. Ms. Roeleveld speaks from her heart, directly to mine. So many times I felt she had written the words I read specifically for me. I felt Holy Spirit both encouraging and convicting me many times. Even now, having just completed the book, I look forward to reading it again. This one is worth your time...don't miss out.
This is a book of thoughts and essays about faith in Jesus, characters in the Bible, and comments to encourage the reader to grow in his/her faith. The author gave me lots to think about. One idea that made me surprised because I had never thought of it in this way was the Old Testament Jews had/have an invisible God. No wonder they struggled; the other peoples and tribes they encountered all had tangible gods that they could view, hold, carry or bow down. A good reminder is this statement: "God sees things through the lens of eternity. His perspective is not ours."
In the forward, the author’s mentor makes magnificent promises “Get ready. For tears. For laughter. For comfort. For great hope. And for a journey that will take you deeper into the kingdom than you’ve probably ever gone.” Unfortunately, for me the book did not deliver on those promises: no tears; little laughter; no hope; shallow journey.
My high expectations coupled with Lori’s golly-gee style led to a big disappointment for me. I wish you better.
Lori challenged me in my walk with Jesus. Her real and personal writing style keeps me reading her books. I highly suggest this book to every believer. Get ready to be moved, challenged, and encouraged. I keep it close so I can re-read it.
I love books Roeleveld loves, and the redemption that shows in movies. My favorite chapter was 68 and Luke Skywalker’s light saber. Nothing can stop the light. Darkness cannot hide. Bold and encouraging.
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve read through this devotional. I pull it back off the shelf when I need to laugh, escape, and seek Jesus…simultaneously :)
I began reading this book and wanted to stop. It disturbed me, made me angry. But I felt the need to keep reading. I did.
Words, like a sword, cut into my inner most being. Lori told it straight. And I loved it.
My wife, when giving our kids medicine will at times mixes it with applesauce. There's a lot of applesauce in this book. I found myself laughing and learning.
When reading this book, I thought of a supermarket. There are things on the shelves I would buy, and there are things on the shelves I would leave there.
Star Trek reference. Yes, Klingons can give us a spiritual lesson. A karate group who talked about taking down terrorists. Crazy Irene. (One antenna shy of a tin foil hat.) And several other lessons.
Those were items I bought.
I recommend: Read this book if you want your Christianity turned up-side-down. If you want to stay comfortable, by all means, don't read this book.
Excellent! I've been following Lori's blog for a while and finally decided to read her books after ages of trying to get around to it. I'm so glad I used this as a devotion.
Lori is a writer of happy paradoxes: she's humorous yet serious, convicting and encouraging, sobering yet joyous. She writes like a mentor talking to you across a table over coffee. She keeps things real, but doesn't try to relate to her readers so much that she places making them smile over giving 'em a good old spiritual kick in the pants towards Jesus. I love how she ties in Scripture to her easy, helpfully discomforting words, keeping things in context with the Biblical author's words. Running From a Crazy Man does a wonderful job of reaching out to the reader wherever they're at in life, without assumptions or pretenses. I picked this up in a hard place in life, and found myself encouraged to keep running and learning how to be replenished and find strength outside myself.
Don't you you just love the title? I must confess it grabbed my attention even though I have read blogs written by this Author. This book will make you think, think deeper about Jesus, faith and your own beliefs. I gave this book a 5 star rating. This is the Author's first book and she hit the bulls eye. Jesus always spoke the truth in love and so does the Author. Lori challenges the reader in every chapter. She is smart, knows her stuff, is savvy and her sense of humor is a bonus. A must read if you want more authentic Christianity than the sugar coated stuff we are being asked to swallow.
This actually makes me mad because I BOUGHT this book on the recommendations of Jerry Jenkins and James Rubart, both of whom I respect as thoughtful, thought-provoking writers. This book, however, is a been-there-heard-that-sermon rehash of, well, every pithy trite piece of fluffy "wisdom" parsed out during most women's Bible studies. The chapters are written in a way that sounds like blog material (except her blog is so much better that I cannot for the life of me reconcile this book to what I've read there) about that long, and about that deep. It's so much surface stuff as to be downright maddening, in the truest sense of the word. I seriously want my money back.
As a Christian, it's a challenge to live out your faith in today's world. Lori Stanley Roeleveld gives readers practical insight for everyday living. Each chapter is a pointed story combined with Scripture. Also she includes a Ponder the Perplexities section and a key lesson to takeaway called Remember. Whether you read from the beginning to the end or use each chapter as a daily devotion, this book will open your eyes to a world that needs Jesus. I enjoyed reading RUNNING FROM A CRAZY MAN and highly recommend this book.
Short stories that portray big lessons. There is something in here for everyone. Have a few minutes while waiting in the doctor's office or getting your hair done? Pull out this book and get a life lesson in that few minutes. No preachy, this book is down to earth, Bible based and full of wisdom on how to get closer to Jesus while trying to get through our time on earth. I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
What an lively, funny and deep read. Roeleveld uses fun anecdotes and well thought out parallels to living the Christian life that God intended and created for each of us to live. Roeleveld has a strong voice that is relatable, funny and though provoking. I highly recommend this to read, listen to, and gift!
Interesting book about your relationship with Jesus. It is written for people who are very busy with jobs, family and life and want a relationship with Jesus. It gives us many things to think about.
