[Baki, second series volumes 1-31] Baki’s what would happen if you watched too many slow-mo videos of astronauts doing centrifuge training or just someone standing in front of a leaf blower, so you got desensitized to people’s eyelids and cheeks flapping around, like someone with a porn addiction.

Characterization, pacing and logic are all so inconsistent that it feels like Itagaki is constantly getting bored of his own comic. The “five most evil fucked up men alive break out of prison” premise is abandoned pretty quickly in favor of…you guessed it…another tournament arc!! Also, maybe it’s the fan translation’s fault, but while all men dream of becoming the strongest warrior alive, women’s goal is mostly to “become a woman” which basically means choosing a man to support unconditionally while he Goes Off To War To Die. Which like, sure, that’s the implication of every sports manga with a female team manager anyway, but you don’t have to say it Out Loud!

I WAS genuinely impressed by HOW homoerotic it was to keep cutting back and forth between Baki getting ready to have sex with his girlfriend for the first time and like, three different fully naked, penis out male fight scenes. Baki might be a wishy-washy, possibly evil excuse for an optimistic, bright-eyed shonen archetype a la Goku or Luffy, but 90% of the chapter illustrations ARE him wearing low slung jeans while soaking wet.

Also every drawing of Baki’s Evil Dad is the new worst thing I’ve ever seen. Like if Dio from JJBA was run through content aware scaling. I /was/ fascinated by the chapter where he meets Muhammad Ali and thanks him for fighting against racism in America and also dodging the draft so that he would have more time to get better at punching.

Also also, I know that Rurouni Kenshin has fallen long out of favor (for good reason), but remember when a character would sprain their wrist in a fight and then be out of commission for like two years, and they’d get to do maybe ONE more fight before doing permanent nerve damage and retiring forever? Every character in Baki has full body reconstructive surgery twice a month and then flexes their plaster cast off.

Hanma Baki is absolutely insane. Absurd storylines, convenient plots and plot armor, ridiculous settings- and I love it. The art is skewed and stylized to a level that can seem grotesque to those who haven't gotten used to it, and the characters are basically meat golems with the life goals of beating the stuffing out of one another.

Big fan of Baki, big fan of the manga. Just finished reading all 312 chapters of this manga and it was an absolute trip from start to finish.

I recommend this to those looking for a good fighting manga to read, those who enjoy absurdist mma duels that evolve into imaginary duels, and those who lie characters with otherworldly strength. It's just a good time overall.

Would recommend, would read again. On to the next one!

Skoro nie ma już prawie żadnych silnych przeciwników dla Bakiego, ten musi przeprowadzać sparing z dzikimi zwierzętami.

Yujiro fights an elephant. Baki slaps a kid across a river like skipping a stone and boxes with invisible Iron Michael. We're off to a good start here.

Read 37 volumes. Each successive series gets more insane, he fights the strongest man in America, a caveman, and then his father, during which he pisses himself twice and wins by pretending to flip an imaginary table and convincing his father he actually flipped a table. Incredible.
