This is a different world entirely to The Poster, James' first published book, although I know that he had written Stone and Water first. If you love the wild uplands of South West Britain or early British history, this is a must-read. James brings the tribal life of early Britain to life so vividly. His characters are believable and relatable, you feel you have been invited into the different tribes' communities, and the world of the invading vanguard of Roman soldiers. You eat with them, ride with them, train with them, bathe with the women. Even their dogs and horses jump off the page. His plot is driven by real history and his deep knowledge of the landscapes and prehistoric sites of Devon shines through. Absolutely recommend and hope there will be a sequel (he doesn't "do" sequels). More of this please James. Should be in every Devonian Xmas stocking this year.
