Gustave Caillebotte (1848-1894) was a painter. But not only that. Above all, he was an enthusiast. An innovative artist hailed by his peers, the first
collector of the Impressionists, a great yachtsman, a renowned philatelist and an innovative botanist, he pursued several passions simultaneously until he achieved excellence.
More than a century later, who can still tell the story?
Stéphanie Chardeau-Botteri, a descendant of Gustave, tells us about the artist through the history of the Impressionist movement. Having lived with her great- grandmother, Geneviève Caillebotte, the artist's niece, for fourteen years, she offers us a previously unpublished account based on her precious family archives.
Stéphanie Chardeau-Botteri is an expert on nineteenth-century art and a member of the Chambre nationale des experts spécialisés (CNES). She has helped to organize numerous exhibitions devoted to her ancestor.
Her book, which is a veritable immersion in the world of the 19th century, was shortlisted for the Goncourt biography prize.
Gustave Caillebotte: Impressionist Painter, Sailor, Boat Designer, and Philanthropist
If Gustave Caillebotte hadn’t lived, painted, and been so generous, the world might not have known Monet, Renoir, Degas, Pissaro, or Sisley. Thank you, Caillebotte heirs, for rectifying our knowledge and educating us today.
