Kamandi avenges the death of his grandfather, who was killed by wolves, but is captured by a tiger named Caesar--who turns him over to dog-scientist Dr. Canus!
Jack Kirby (born Jacob Kurtzberg) was one of the most influential, recognizable, and prolific artists in American comic books, and the co-creator of such enduring characters and popular culture icons as the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, the Hulk, Captain America, and hundreds of others stretching back to the earliest days of the medium. He was also a comic book writer and editor. His most common nickname is "The King."
Part Planet of the Apes, part Johnny Quest, I had never before heard of Kamandi. But as a fan of Jack Kirby I was not disappointed with the bizarre post-apocalyptic world, where mutant animals (dogs, tigers, leopards, gorillas, rats and possibly more...) now rule and battle each other for supremacy, while the few remaining humans are hunted and themselves treated as animals.
I read this because Jim Wampler said it was one of his primary inspirations for the upcoming Mutant Crawl Classics RPG. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it's a Jack Kirby book! I think I may have read some of these back in the 80s at some point. Anyway, I really enjoyed it, and would have enjoyed reading more, but sequential issues are not available for Kindle at the moment, so I'll have to buy print copies if I want to read more . . . which I may want to do as MCC gets closer to release, to get into the proper post-apocalyptic mood!
In the wake of Planet of the Apes movies comes this 'Kirbyesque' take on a dystopian future. Really like the addition 'layers' Kirby added to this interpretation of a world ruled by 'evolved' animals; his art is perfect for this type of story! One observation: doesn't Kamandi look like a very young Thor! Find Mjölnir Kamandi! Sure you are worthy!
