Rate this book
The Fates have abandoned the Aduro Kingdom to smoke and ash.

Inspired by classic literature and psychological horror, comes a dark fantasy tale of twenty-year-old Briar, heir to the Aduro Kingdom.

When Briar comes face-to-face with Death itself, she is forced to bargain with a Hunter to stay alive long enough to find her twin brother and is brought to a hidden island of mutated monster-slayers. Hunters have always been the stuff of legend and nightmares... but it turns out they’re as desperate as the humans and Elves hunting her and her brother to fulfil a prophecy that will renew the Midlands.

James Róisín is an Ontario-based author of dark epic fantasy, drawn to stories where beauty and brutality coexist and power is never innocent.

Their work explores morally grey ambition, the slow seduction of evil, and the intimate violence of choice—where love lingers at the edges of ruin rather than offering salvation.

Their debut adult fantasy series, the Aduro Kingdom, unfolds in a realm shaped by fire, blood, and legacy, where devotion corrodes, crowns demand cruelty, and survival often requires becoming something unrecognizable.

From the first page, we’re dropped into a kingdom unraveling with secrets, war, and high-stakes divine meddling. The setup was strong, and I really enjoyed the overall plot — but at times, it felt like things were moving wayyy too fast. Every chapter kicks off with a great hook, but the pacing didn’t always hold. With how short the chapters were, I sometimes felt like I was losing the thread or missing key emotional beats before we jumped to the next moment.

That said… the side characters completely stole my heart. Bono and Jace?? Obsessed. They added so much life, tension, and subtle humor that I kept looking forward to their scenes the most. I only wish we got more of them (please).

Some plot holes kept me from fully sinking into the world, but the ending left me needing to know what happens next. Chaos is definitely coming — and I’m here for it 👀

Huge thank you to the author for the ARC! I can’t wait to see where this series goes next ♡

“i’ve tasted your blood, your body, your soul. and you’ve left me completely bewitched.”

Right off the bat, you’re launched straight into a world full of magic, action, danger and destiny, and trust me, there’s no slowing down.

Think: a world brimming with elves, hunters, ancient prophecies, and at the heart of it all, so many unforgettable characters. Briar’s transformation throughout the book is chef’s kiss ✨ she’s fierce, determined, extremely resilient. And Cas? Oh Cas. Imagine Geralt of Rivia, but somehow even more broody, more feral, more magnetic. (Yes, it’s possible.) Bonus points for Bono, the other scene-stealer, 10/10. )

The writing was so lyrical and poetic, and everything was so quotable, you’ll want to read lines twice just to savor them.

Thank you so much James for giving me the chance to read early! i’m so excited to see what happens in book two 🫶🏼

I can’t believe it—it’s done. Finishing this book has been one of the most emotional, challenging, and rewarding experiences of my life. I poured everything into these pages, and now I’m finally letting it go. I’m proud of what I created, proud that I didn’t give up, and proud to release it into the world just as it is—imperfect, honest, and mine.

omg, ok. where do i begin with this? honestly, i love this story, these characters, this world so so much! A Kingdom of Beasts and Betrayals is a beautifully haunting story of a grief, destruction and resilience. i was immediately pulled into the world of Aduro Kingdom, and James had me continuous asking for more with the beautifully poetic way she has of writing dark and dangerous characters. and when i say dark, i mean dark! in the best possible way 🤭

Briar is our morally grey warrior princess who only wants to find what she lost 10 years ago- her twin brother. through the process of going out on her own to find him, she finds so much more! i absolutely adore Briar. she is the perfectly imperfect female lead we want and James delivers her with brutal honesty. i love watching Briar’s character develop throughout the story as she fights her own demons and pushes herself to the limits

one thing she does find on her journey, is the Hunters- a ruthless group of mutated monster-slayers, made from stuff of nightmares and fuel to the local myths and legends; they’re terrifying, but they’re hot and actually show emotional awareness soooo.. 😏

all in all, the vibes of this book are immaculate! if you’re looking for a true dark fantasy with gorgeous smut and a little bit of “leave them wanting more”, this is the book for you!

I loved so much about this - for starters: Cas (the man that you areeee), this man was broody, mysterious, & down bad for his girl. I loved him. The plot was fast paced & the writing was lyrical, beautiful, & vivid. In the middle/towards the end, I found myself feeling like I missed a central narrative thread that connected the overall plot and that had me a bit confused at parts, but then found it again towards the end. Definitely loved so much about this!

Special thank you to James for letting me be lucky enough to read this early! I can’t wait to see where book 2 takes us 🫶✨

“Something as brutal as me deserves to be restrained, hidden from the public like a disgrace, like a myth.”

A Kingdom of Beasts & Betrayal focuses on Briar, a 20 year old princess who has been hidden away in Scottland Castle. Hidden so long, people no longer believe she exists. Then she escapes…

This is a story of love, loss & found family and a journey where Briar is trying to find her way back to her twin brother, Benjamin.

First I want to start by saying that James’ writing is absolutely beautiful! It’s so lyrical and poignant and I hope she never loses her style of writing.

I loved the world building! After working on the map, I really felt a connection to the world and when places were mentioned, I knew where they were so I felt immersed in that way. I really loved the magic system also, and I am so curious to learn more about this!

I really enjoyed the characters, particularly Bono and Zoya who are two side characters and I think they really offered some unique perspectives to the story. I am especially excited to see more of the elves!

With that being said, I did find myself struggling with certain parts throughout the book. I think there are some scenes and relationships that just needed fleshing out more so I could really build that deeper connection with the characters. Or I could feeling the tension building so I was on the edge of my seat.

I think this has the potential to be an amazing series if there is more fleshing out. I do love the storyline, plot, world building and some of the characters.

Thank you, James, for allowing me to be one of the first people to read. You have my full support.

“For those who have ever felt forgotten – You will one day be the sun that blinds them all” 🔥

2.5 ⭐️

This book has a captivating premise that immediately drew me in - a kingdom abandoned by the Fates, a dark bargain with Death, and a hidden island of monster-slayers. James’s passion for fantasy is evident, and the incorporation of folklore, along with a strong, morally gray female lead such as Briar, gave the story a solid foundation. There are moments where the writing is lyrical and poetic, and flashes of humor lighten the darker atmosphere in a way that works well.

That said, I think the story would benefit from deeper worldbuilding and a bit of a slower pace. I often found myself wishing for more background information on the characters, poltics, world history, and a better understanding of the prophecy so I could feel more grounded in the setting. Some plot points and character details / motivations felt rushed, and the book could definitely have been expanded by another 200 pages to allow the story, and the reader’s connection to it , to fully develop.

From a technical standpoint, the book has a noticeable number of spelling, grammar, and tense-consistency issues, which at times distracted from the reading experience. A thorough edit would strengthen the prose and help the author’s natural talent shine through. I also noticed a heavy reliance on similes and at times I wished for more “telling” than “showing,” because sometimes it pulled me out of the immersion.

Overall, this series shows a lot of promise, with an intriguing plot and a clear love for the genre. With more attention to worldbuilding, pacing, and editing, I think it could become a truly immersive and memorable fantasy!!

Thank you James for this ARC and for gifting me the opportunity to read your work!! Wishing you all the success in this adventure you wonderful soul 🥀🖤✨

'You belong only to yourself, love. And if you ever choose to gift me even a small piece of yourself, I will devour it. Worship it. And patiently wait for more until you decide to give it.'

James has an ethereal quality to her writing with a lyrical flow that makes for such easy, beautiful reading. It is haunting and emotive and so descriptive I was immersed immediately.

This is a fast paced read about separated siblings and the prophecy that surrounds them, filled with action and laced with undercurrents of danger.

Briar is layered, chaotic and unstoppable and we are spoilt with a multitude of male characters, with Castiel being my favourite. He's grumpy, moody, smirky... brutal, but will carry books for her from a bookshop. He calls her 'love'? The mouth on him? Oh look, it's my type, all wrapped up in a big, broody package 😏

While reading I sometimes felt as though I was missing some key elements of the plot and the blend of writing in past and present tense threw me off a bit. I loved the beginning, got a little lost in the middle, then found it all came together at the end.

There is a beautiful emotional depth to the writing, however, that meant I was completely absorbed and couldn't stop reading. There are scenes written with such vulnerability and pure intensity they gave me goosebumps and there are breadcrumbs sprinkled throughout that had me making mental notes here and there, wondering if something I'd noticed would pop back up later in the book.

A Kingdom Of Beasts And Betrayal is the perfect example for me of why I'm a vibe reader through and through. I'm no critic, I'm not looking for a literary masterpiece -  if the vibes are immaculate I'll eat it up, and I devoured this.

Thankyou so much James, for the honour of being one of the first people to read your book. Your words are powerful and I cannot wait for the next instalment of the Arduro Kingdom!

What a beautiful debut novel full of magic and action! James writing is poetic that pulls you in right away and it felt melodic throughout the entire read. It’s fast paced right off the start as you learn about Briar and her plan. She’s a complex character and I loved seeing her grow and learn the new characters that got introduced in this story.

At times, I felt some parts were a bit rushed and I had to reread some parts but overall a great read! Thank you, James for allowing me to read your beautiful debut and can’t wait to read more from you 🖤✨

I was given the privilege of reading an ARC copy of this book and yapping with the author as I went along.

I found the book to be engaging and interesting overall. The ending definitely beefs up the stress and leaves you wanting more. I definitely will need to know where this goes.

Briar is a strong willed woman on a mission to find her brother Benjamin and Castiel is a Hunter who sort of gets thrown into her path and they end up stuck with one another.

There are some lovable side characters that bring levity and charm to the story, which is apparently because Briar can sometimes be Nesta-adjacent.

Now, my only issue with this story is the speed that things happen. This is a fast paced book and readers will do well to remember that. I am used to a bit more world building so it was a little harder to build an image in my mind. I feel like there were some parts I would have loved to see more details in to make sure I maintain emotional investment.

Overall I think it’s a good start to a new fantasy story that’s much more punchy than a typical fantasy type story. I am hoping with some more detail between main plot points in the next story.

Firstly!! James' writing is hauntingly brutal, lyrical and immersive like it captivated me and wouldn't let me go!

Briar!!! is a storm wrapped in quiet resolve, layered, fierce, unpredictable and impossible to stop once she sets her mind on something. She’s been through hell and carries the scars to prove it, but instead of breaking, she sharpens - loved that!

Bono absolutely was a side character highlight. If you know me, than you know I love good side characters and he was mine. And then Cas! Complicated, broody (of course) and just dangerously brutal but there's moment in the book where you get to see a different side to him which i really like!

There were moments where the timeline jumps from past to present took my focus as it took me a bit to get my head around where I was, but I did like exploring their pasts

James excels at crafting moody, spellbinding scenes that make the kingdom feel both haunting and alive making me INHALE this book and highlighting the shit out it haha!. I really enjoyed it. The world James has created is brutal and beautiful in equal measure, and the emotional depth really hit.

Looking forward to book 2 to see where the story goes and to dive deeper into this world James has created.

Thank You James for the opportunity to read this! appreciate you 🫶

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of A Kingdom of Beasts and Betrayal, and I’m so grateful for the chance to dive into this world early.

From page one, the story hits the ground running, action-packed scenes pull you straight in, and the short, punchy chapters make it incredibly hard to stop reading. I especially loved the side characters, with Jace and Bono stealing the spotlight every time they appeared. The whole atmosphere had a distinct Witcher vibe, so if you’re a fan of that series (books, games, tv show), I think you’ll enjoy the tone and grit here. If anything, I found myself wanting more! More history, more detail about the world, and deeper dives into the characters’ backgrounds. The pacing felt a little uneven, with a high-octane start, a slower middle that leaned more into romance, and then a strong finish that picked up the pace again. Overall, this was an exciting, immersive fantasy adventure with plenty of hooks to keep you turning the pages, I’ll be watching for the next instalment!

This started off with some promise but then kind of lost me. The writing was beautiful. Poetic and emotional. Some scenes stood out and felt lyrical and intense.

The rest was harder for me to connect with. There were a lot of characters, but not much backstory or explanation for why they acted the way they did. The pacing moved fast and I couldn’t get fully into the story or feel emotionally attached to anyone. The world building was light, but not enough for me to really understand how things worked. Briar, the FMC, was harsh to everyone she met and I didn’t really get why.

The writing style is strong and has so much potential. I also liked the use of shifting perspectives. Seeing the same scenes through different characters pov was very unique and fun.

I was so grateful to be given an ARC of A Kingdom of Beasts and Betrayal, and I want to thank James for including me on their ARC team.

This book started incredibly as I’d been in a bit of a reading slump, and the fast-paced opening immediately hooked me. The banter made me smile, the friendships felt genuine, and the dynamic between our mmc & fmc gave me slight Rowan and Aelin vibes with their dislike-to-lovers teasing and the (more than) occasional punch 🙂‍↕️

Where I struggled was with the bigger picture. I felt like more attention could have been paid towards setting up the world-building and the lore. There were also a lot of characters and at times I felt lost about who was who or how they fit together, especially when multiple new POV’s started appearing.

Even with those hiccups, there’s a lot here to enjoy. The world feels big and full of potential, and the central relationships kept me turning pages. I’m glad the next book will be a prequel as it sounds like it will help tie the world, characters and prophecy together more clearly !!

A Kingdom of Beasts and Betrayal....I have so many thoughts and feelings.

James' writing is so beautiful. From the beginning, Briar's story felt very poetic and was smooth. I felt every pain Briar encountered, her loss, her grief, but also her passion. As a twin, I resonate with Briar's pain of not being close with her twin. There is a deeper connection with a twin sibling compared to other siblings. I would be lost without my twin sister.

Briar went through a lot of heartache in AKOBAB but it never stopped her from pushing through; it fuelled her fire.

Through the book, I wanted more. More of Briar, the Hunters and their story, and overall to know how Benjamin got to where he ended up and why. James really keeps you on your toes, allows for some laughs with various characters and their humour. I would love to learn more about the kingdom and especially Castiel's story. It sounds heart wrenching from the little tid bit we get!

I am very excited for the next book and to see where James takes us next! It won't disappoint!

James was sweet enough to give me this book as an ARC.

The vibe of the book is hauntingly gorgeous...all of the great things about an emotionally charged gothic fantasy. The descriptive atmosphere was on point and super immersive.

That being said, I did feel like the plot moved so fast that it was hard to fully get into it at times. Characters would pop up, make a super brief appearance, and then vanish in one way or another. Because there were a lot of characters, it felt a little difficult to form any real attachments to many of them. Add in a ton of POVs, and things got a bit confusing for me. But I do think Bono deserves his own little shout-out, just saying.
I loved that it ended on a cliffhanger with some seriously intriguing mystery.

I think with a bit more depth and some simplification of both the plot and characters, this could’ve been a much stronger read. However, overall, I really did enjoyed the book as a whole!

Let's talk about A Kingdom of Beasts and Betrayals by James Roisin.

Reader Notes:

Since I was an early reader of this book, I wanted to give James my feedback first before posting it here on Goodreads. Now that I have, here is my open and honest review of her debut novel. The book overall for me is a solid 2.5-3 star review. This book and the others that will come after this series has the potential of being absolutely wonderful pieces of work, so I am interested fully in the ride and to see where this will go.

Review:

AKOBAB is a dark and twisted tale of tragedy, monsters, and betrayal. I truly did enjoy the overall premise of the story. It was gritty, dark, and engaging - especially at the beginning of the book. James' writing is descriptive and poignant, prose-like. It's floral and evocative. I enjoyed the raw emotion in the writing – this I could feel. I could feel the tension, the anger, the yearning. These were major plus points for me in reading this book. And that cliffhanger at the end! It was a doozy, and I didn't see it coming at all.

“i’ve tasted your blood, your body, your soul. and you’ve left me completely bewitched.”

But there were quite a few things that made me give the rating I did.

1. Character development of the FMC. I really did not know who Briar was. I knew she was a twin, I knew she had some magical capabilities, but other than that, she seemed just angry and only “wanting” Castiel.
2. There needed to be more character alignment with the hunters – those that we did meet within the story. I would have loved to have seen them more flushed out and rounded. Who are they and how did they get there. We know a little bit about Castiel, but only how he became so hard and tragic. Why did these men become hunters?
3. The use of multiple points of view – especially near the end almost did not make sense or was not
needed.
4. The overall last third of the book felt rushed, with the adding of new POV’s instead of focusing on Briar and Castiel’s POVs. There was a lot going on, but it felt all smashed up together.

One of the pluses of the book: BONO - if you know you know...

Thank you James for allowing me an early ARC of your book and for allowing me to give you my open and honest feedback.

A Kingdom of Beasts and Betrayal starts off extremely fast paced with twists and turns at the end of every chapter. Since most of the main male characters didn't make it past a chapter in the beginning after they were introduced, I found myself not wanting to get invested when another new character entered the story. I think someone died at the end of every chapter to start? While it moves the plot along, it seemed unnecessary and over the top. Unfortunately for me, I think that is the ultimate reason as to why I did not become invested in the characters as much as I should have. The pacing slows down towards the middle of the book, with bursts of chaos here and there. Since the chapters were short, I felt a bit of whiplash in certain areas of the book. The story then kicks back into hyper speed in the final few chapters. This pacing was a bit tough for me to digest. Towards the end, the book shifts into other perspectives of side characters as the story is then told from their point of view. I think I am a bit confused as to why these characters are so important to have their own POV in this book, but I am sure it will be answered in future books. This story was also broken down into various parts and I am not certain I followed exactly why there were so many.

This world is unique with wild beasts, magic, and political intrigue. The Hunters remind me so much of the Witcher with their character descriptions and motivations. I was sort of understanding the magic that was involved, but at times was confused with how B's magic actually worked. In one scene there is an ancient shield to protect against it, but then it is never referenced again. In that same scene she appears to have the fire magic coming from her mouth, but then the rest of the book the magic manifests differently. I am not completely sure I understand the magic system, but I thought it was fascinating.

One thing I absolutely loved about this book was how resilient and tough the FMC Briar is. There are multiple times in this book where she could have given up and given in but instead she overcomes all odds by fighting onward. She goes through so much pain and unbelievable horrors at the beginning that I was so surprised she held it in so well. I'm sure most of the pain is lingering under the surface, but without time to grieve one tragic event after another at the end seems like it could be destructive. Honestly, I am shocked with how the book started that she even had the will to go on.

The relationship between Briar and Cas I'm not fully convinced of, but I have a feeling they are fated mates which is why they are so drawn to each other right off the bat. I love their banter and quips, especially their sparring moments. I felt like their love story happened quite quickly. For a moment I thought there would be a potential love triangle with Bono with the love that he has for briar and the love Briar reciprocates back.

Overall, the vibe of this book was excellent, but I am left a little confused with the magic system and where the plot of this series is ultimately going (which I understand might be to intrigue the reader to go on to book 2). Thank you so much for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

James Roisin is a beautiful writer and has crafted an intriguing world and magic with her descriptive and lyrical writing. A Kingdom of Beasts and Betrayal has love, extreme loss, found family, high stakes, political intrigue and lines that I felt deeply and resonated with (scroll across to read some)

The FMC Briar is brave and resilient, having to overcome so much loss and horror but continually keeps fighting to be reunited with her twin brother. The MMC is broody, rude and a little unhinged BUT lets you buy all the books so none have to be left behind… and seriously what more could you want!?

It took me a beat to sink into this story as the start moved very fast with multiple characters being introduced and quickly gone from the story line and then slowed considerably in the middle but once I did sink in I really enjoyed the plot, the banter and the side characters in this story.

My favourite chapters were those of the Elves, I was hooked and wanted more! I am really looking forward to seeing how that thread of the story line progresses and mergers more with Briars. I think Zoya is going to be a favourite of mine.

A unique dark fantasy and I am looking forward to seeing where James takes it!

Thank you so much for allowing me to ARC read this, and also for being such a lovely human!!

I received this ARC and this is my honest review ❤️‍🔥 With a 3.75 stars, rounded up.
With The Witcher vibes, A Kingdom of Beasts & Betrayal is a dark fantasy tale set in a crumbling continent ruled by Human Kingdoms at war and locked in conflict with the Elves.
Driven by a prophecy and abandoned by the Fates, the Aduro Kingdom is left with only one of its royal twins, Princess Briar, while her brother, Crown Prince Benjamin, has been missing for ten years. Determined to find him, Briar escapes the castle, only to be captured by the enemy. To fulfill her destiny, she must ally with the Hunters, mutant monster-slayers, but can she truly trust them?
With lyrical writing and a magical world-building, the author creates an enchanted and haunting story that had me hooked from the very first page.
That being said, it would’ve been great to see more of the other characters’ POV from the start, would’ve made the story even more interesting and helped me understand the world and side characters better.
Here are the Tropes:
- Dark Fantasy
- Prophecies
- Royalty
- Fire Magic
- Enemies to Lovers
- Slow-burn Romance
- Multiple POVs
I’m excited to see how this series evolves!

Firstly, thank you James for allowing me the honour of this eARC. I'm truly so excited to see where the journey leads in this series.

This was an intense read, it was action packed, fast paced and deeply dark with a gorgeous gothic atmosphere (my favourites!)

The chapters were short, (which makes it super difficult to stop reading as its so easy to go "just one more chapter!) but at times I wished they were longer. Well, if anything, I wish the whole book was longer because I needed MORE. In a good way. I feel like we miss a lot of information at times, and there is so much more to learn and understand of this world and it did feel like things were missing.
I do wonder if this is deliberate though as it feels as if the author is building up to something big. So, I am hoping for more world building in the second book as I do feel its needed and would really help me personally to connect more with it.

I really did enjoy this book, I am excited to see where this goes, I just wish there was more of it because at times it felt a little rushed. I will definitely be reading book 2!

Let's gooo! I love a wild start and a fast pace! This one doesn't waste any time getting into things and it felt like no one was safe (which I am here for!). I definitely got excited when we met the group of hunters because I will just eat up a quirky guy gang. The relationship between the MMC and FMC was also so fun to watch unfold. They go at each other's throats literally and with their sharp verbal jabs. He is so dark and smoldering and she is so bold and forward. I don't normally like when characters don't communicate, but the way it was done in this book where she would either come right out and say things or coldly bolt had me cracking up. The extra POVs we get throughout the book were a wonderful surprise that I really enjoyed. One thing I would have liked more of would be to see the healing done more emotionally than physically. The ending definitely left me wanting answers and I'm looking forward to the next book!

Also, Jace needs a feature 🤩. Obsessed!

Thank you to the author for the advanced reader copy!

We’ve got magic, we’ve got elves, we’ve got hunters (think witcher-esque), we’ve got ancient prophecies, and we have straight up trauma, but wow! What a wild ride.

Briar and Cas’ story was beautiful, and I can’t wait to see where their story will go after that emotional rollercoaster of an ending. Both characters were already dealing with so much guilt and grief, and I hope we get to see them continue to lean on each other in book two!

But I will say, the true stars for me were the side characters. I need more Bono! What is even happening with Zoya? Yelena? And my sweet golden retriever Jace! These characters were all just set up perfectly in every scene, I need to know everything about them!

Quick paced, filled with unforgettable characters, beautiful writing, and an emotional story about love and loss, I would definitely recommend the Aduro Kingdom to fantasy lovers alike!🙌🏼 An awesome debut!

I adore briar. She’s strong and self assured which is so refreshing for an FMC. She has moments of fragility that I feel humanizes her and makes her very relatable. I love her fierce loyalty to her brother and her cunning throughout the body of this book. She is physically dedicated to her situation at hand but always three steps ahead.
Castiel is a FORCE! I love the way he pushes Briar and pokes fun, all the while falling for her while his own past and darkness threatens to surface.
Zoya is someone I need much more of!!! The entire dynamic of the elven kingdom needs its own feature! I loved the inner working of the circle and the way they interpreted the prophecy. And, obviously, the connection of Briar and Zoya.
As the POV changes toward the end of the book it leaves you craving for more! The world and story open up so much but leave little crumbles to keep you needing more and more and more!

Thanks you for the opportunity for the e arc for an honest review

Like Briar, I would do anything to try to find my brothers. And I know my brother who are twins would defy life itself to find each other.

Having to find the inner strength to face what she needs to face and the places she has to travel to. Damn well. It creeped me out a it. The pacing of the story was well paced, I honestly thought it was bringing the world building gradually to live. It's hauntingly good writing.

When I say I genuinely always love the side characters more than the MC's most of the time is not a lie. They bring so much to the story.

It gives you grief, loss, the moment of hopelessness. At the beginning when she's in that place early on with grief. It hits you. Then inner strength that goes with it.

I can't wait to see more of the journey in the next book.

2.5 ⭐️ Thank you, James for the ARC and an opportunity to leave an honest review. For a debut novel, this story has promise. The chapters are quick and often end on a good hook. I enjoyed the poems that divided the chapters too - this is where James’ lyrical writing shines. Unfortunately, I found the fragmented storyline difficult to follow, as the middle of the book focuses on Briar and Castiel’s relationship without sufficient world-building for me to fall back into the overall premise (finding her brother, I think?). The book is very fast paced to the detriment of the characters’ development. I enjoyed the action but wanted more understanding of the players involved. Rehashing scenes through multi-POV at the end of the book was confusing. Nonetheless, the end delivers a punch and leaves you wondering what’s next.

I have been anticipating reading AKOBAB for months and months and months, so how have I had it in my hands for 3 days and finished it already. If you like to have your heart stomped on every chapter, the uncertainty of never knowing who will survive, the brutality of a harsh world, and an FMC with dark, brutal thoughts to match it, then sit your ass down, strap your ass in, and pick up AKOBAB because when I tell you the first 15% is ruthless, violent, immersive, gorgeous - I’m not lying - and Róisín doesn’t let up that ferocious pacing.

Her world is so big and expansive, but she guides us through it with a smile, often a wink, and with a full cast of handsome, lethal book boyfriends as we join the Hunters and begin Briar’s training. The tension and banter and spice between Briar and our MMC is delectable, and I found myself holding my breath for chapters at a time because of the PALPABLE desire in the room (I did also read the spicy bonuses and woo boy) and sobbing into my hands at their natural intimacy, battling against their guarded personalities. To watch Briar open up before our eyes, begin to love and feel vulnerability and friendship, romance and hope, was beautiful to read, and expertly written.

What struck me the most about AKOBAB is just how much of a love letter it feels to the genre and its readers; Briar is an avatar for book girlies everywhere, funny, fierce, relatable and realistic. Through her we explore ourselves, our concerns, worries, feelings of inadequacies and self doubt, desires, and hopes. She feels fully realised and comfortingly familiar, as close to a “literally me” character as I’ve seen in the genre and that’s because Ròisìn is one of us, a reader who loves what she does and uses that to fuel her writing which is phenomenal. I loved this book so much, I would read a million more and as debuts go, this one is dynamite.

A Kingdom of Beasts and Betrayal
3.5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️. ✨

A romantasy with enemies to lovers-IM IN 😅

Tropes:
⚔️ Enemies to Lovers
🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 Found Family
👩‍❤️‍👨 Forced proximity
🔥 Fire magic
🖤 Morally grey characters
👑 Royalty
🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️ Spice — open door 🚪

The beginning of this book really has some unexpected twists that left me wanting more. The MMC’s quick wit and banter with Briar is top tier. I love a book with yearning and AKOBAB did not disappoint.

Chapter 21 was devastatingly good with angst! 🏆

I did find the world building losing me a bit but that could be my own mama brain 🧠.

Great read if you love fantasy with spice!

Thanks to James for the ARC read ❤️

I was given an ARC of this book by the Author

DNF at 68% :/

This has a lot of potential, but needs a lot of development. I felt lost for a majority of the time with characters, terms, places, beings, etc. just being thrown left and right. It has all the makings of what could be a great story and great book, but there needs to be more world building, more context, more plot, and better character development for this to all come together. Also, straight up taking terms and names from other books really put me off (ie death eaters). Plus the POV switching 2/3 of the way into the story is really what made me finally give this up since it felt so random and out of place within the story.
