I love this author’s paranormal books, and this one was no exception. Though this is technically an interconnected standalone series, I highly recommend reading Ember’s Claim before this one. The timelines overlap quite a bit, and though the author provides a catch up/what you need to know guide at the beginning, it is really helpful if you have read the other book first. That said, this is a fun romance that is low angst and has just enough action to keep things interesting.
Rogue never really fit into the human realm, and she finds her place at the sithen between the human and fae realms. The house decided she is to be the caretaker and it is sentient, so that provides some fun/funny moments throughout the story. Once the house has expanded enough, she is able to provide a respite for travelers who are moving between the realms and help them find safety if needed. Like I said previously, this book is very low angst and there is no drama within the pack even though this is a case where the FMC makes the pack (and her mates assumed they were her only mate). Fate put the four of them together for a reason, and it all works out fairly seamlessly. Though there are technically enemies within the pack, they get over it very quickly for Rouge’s sake.
Rogue has so much power, and we only see just a hint of it, but I love that she is powerful without her mates. She is able to defend herself if things go sideways, even though she doesn’t tell anyone that she inherited some of her mom’s power. It is always fun to see glimpses at the first generation of Haven monsters again, and the story arc/mystery that started in Ember’s Claim was tied up perfectly.
