Huckleberry Hill

Rate this book
From Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author Emma Slate comes a brand-new cowboy biker series for fans of Hart of Dixie and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

When my fiancé leaves me because I can’t have children, I do the only thing I can think of . . .

I run away to my family’s ranch in Idaho to hide from my feelings and nurse my wounded heart.

I expect the comforts of home, the solitude of the mountains, and long horseback rides through the forest.

What I don’t expect is my father’s new ranch hand.

Declan Brewer.

Tall. Dark. Rugged.

And he looks just as delicious on a horse as he does a Harley.

He’s got a wicked smile full of promises . . .

Our chemistry is undeniable, and in one forbidden moment, we combust. But instead of burning out, our energy rages into a passionate inferno.

Between bouts of pleasure in Declan’s arms and the laughter we share in his bed, he chips away at the armor I’ve erected around my heart.

Declan is everything I’ve ever wanted, but I’m scared he won’t stay when he finds out the truth . . .

I’m broken, and I don’t know if love will be enough.

After being ditched by her ex-fiancé due to her fertility issues, Hadley heads home to Huckleberry Hill to nurse her broken heart.

Her first night there she runs into Declan (literally) and the pair instantly hit it off. The chemistry between them is undeniable, and when the tension between her and Declan finally snaps, there’s no turning back.

Huckleberry Hill is one of the fluffiest and most adorable books ever written. Declan is definitely high up on my list of book boyfriends too—and I loved how he treated Hadley.

I will say I wasn’t too keen on how insta-love this was, and could’ve done with some angst, but overall really enjoyed this!

WHAT TO EXPECT:
- small town romance
- cowboy biker
- age gap
- surprise pregnancy after infertility

If you loved Emma Slate with her motorcycle club books - this is a western style romance. We have a green flag cowboy who is handsome and witty. And then we have a newly single woman coming back home from the city after a bad break up and some life changing news. Both find each other when they need it. The perpetual people pleaser learns to put herself first, and put herself out there for love. Very slow pace cozy romance.

I did not think I would get an ARC copy of this book...but I'm so glad I did. The story pulls you in from the start and does not let go. There is witty banter, likeable characters and a baby goat 🐐 I love the accidental pregnancy trope and Declan is so adorable, kind and would do anything for her. Loved this book so much!!! Can't wait to read it again.

⭐ 1 star (and that’s generous)

I powered through to finish this, but honestly? Not a good read.

The writing style was flat...lots of “I said, Declan said, I said again” with no action beats, no emotions, and sometimes not even a sense of where the characters were. It read more like a transcript than a story.

The plot made zero sense. We’re told the heroine was diagnosed with infertility after seeing two different doctors, only for her to miraculously get pregnant after two weeks of unprotected sex with a cowboy. And the way it happened? She tells him the very first time they’re about to sleep together that she can’t get pregnant… and he just says “okay,” no hesitation, no questions, no common sense. At 32, you’d expect him to have at least a flicker of skepticism, especially with someone he barely knows.

Then there’s the romance. Ridiculously insta-love, with no real reason behind it. Declan saying he already had an engagement ring after their first night together was the moment I fully checked out.

Between the shaky writing, the nonsensical plot, and the rushed romance, this didn’t work for me at all.

This was just an okay read. It's very insta-lovey but the steaminess makes up for that and I didn't actually mind how quickly the characters were all-in with each other. What did fall flat for me though was the pace of the story as a whole. There was a lot more telling than showing and it made many scenes feel rushed and lackluster. In turn, that made me not able to get into the story all that well and I was never truly devoted to these characters.

Another thing that annoyed me, though I don't think it would have changed my rating either way, was the infertility storyline. It was a big part of our heroines story and a big plot point throughout the whole book, hell, it was even the first line of the blurb. Yet, why was she infertile? It's never discussed at any length past saying she couldn't have kids? That felt odd to me considering there are many reason a person could be told they can't have kids. And yet the entire time I just knew with every fiber of my being that it would turn out to either be a mistake, or she was told it was unlikely that she could have kids on her own but took that to mean it was impossible and then bam she could actually have kids. Did that happen? Yes! But also in the dumbest way by everyone saying her infertility reversed or went away or whatever and she of course ends up pregnant as a big "surprise." Like? Make that make sense? Again, maybe if we had actually known what her fertility issue was that would have made more sense but as it was, it just came off as ridiculous.

Overall, the issue with the pregnancy storyline aside, I still didn't get into this one all that well. It had some redeeming moments and I did like our hero a lot which saved this from being less than a 3 Star read.

First ever ARC read and I’m so happy it was this one! Nothing screams perfect summer book than a cowboy romance where the FMC learns to believe in love again and the MMC is obsessed from the first look.

Hadley and Declan quite literally fell head over heels for each other from page one. Although this book was on the fast-paced side of romances, I really liked how Emma had them talk about real life issues so we still go to enjoy them living life together and growing as a couple.

If you’re looking for a cute summer read with a hot cowboy who rides a motorcycle, a cute animal sidekick, a group of amazing women, and book that’ll suck you in, look no further!

Also Emma, I’m gonna need book 2 asap because that cliffhanger was awful

I read this book in 12 hours. I devoured it. I inhaled it. 📚✨

It was perfect to a T. The love story between Hadley and Declan—or should I say Bear Snack and Snickerdoodle—was just adorable. Their relationship felt so natural, progressing exactly the way it should: slowly, sweetly, and oh-so-authentically. 🐻🍪💘

The silly, playful banter between them had me smiling through the whole book. 😄 The development of Hadley, especially with her condition and learning to embrace herself—with a little help from Declan—was beautiful and heartfelt.

And the spice? Holy moly. 🌶️🔥 It kicks off early (which I loved) and doesn’t hold back.

Oh—and the ending? I loved that the author skipped the predictable breakup drama. It made the story feel even more real and refreshing.

This was my first ARC and I absolutely loved it. Can’t wait for the next book in the Saddles & Spurs series! 🤠📖💫

PS! This book in only from Hadley's POV.

This was genuinely so bad. The characters had almost no love development as they were into each other from first sight and never gave me any reason to believe that they liked each other, much less than they loved each other. I predicted the "plot twist" (if you can even call it that) from like chapter 5 and it was actually just a narrative to drive an early engagement, WHICH I HATED. It was sooooo surface level and never dug into character motivations besides "oh hot man" or "is this ok"? I really wanted to care more about her struggles with infertility but honestly every time it was brought up it felt like it was just there so it would be morally ok to move on this fast. WHICH BRINGS UP ANOTHER THING. The time line of this book is fucking crazy. At one point they were telling each other that they were in love and then mentioned she had been home for less than A MONTH. Oh and don't get me STARTED on bear snack as a cute nickname. We have to get serious. Honestly I may have been able to forgive some of the badness of this book if the sex was good but honestly... lame and boring. Half of the time it was just a "and so he made me cum 3 times and then we fell asleep"... be serious. 2 stars only because it was legible and not slop

ARC review:

I absolutely adored this book. From the opening scene I was laughing, then swooning and then laughing again. Hadley and Declan’s story has you hooked from the start with their banter and nicknames.

I love the way their relationship shows how much things can change so quickly, but that you have to have faith in life that everything happens for a reason.

Declan’s thoughtfulness, patience and honesty with Hadley while she worked through her complex emotions, to help her see that he could be everything she needed to make her dreams come true, was a delight to read, as you could easily connect with those characters and feel their internal struggles.

It’s a fantastic read and with the extra surprise later on the book with some additional characters, it was like the icing on the cake!!

Muddy is also a favourite too! She is a force to be reckoned with and makes you want a gran just like her! And not forgetting about Tempest! I now need a goat 🤣

I can’t wait for the next book! This is going to be an excruciatingly long wait for the next one to come out!!

I finished this book in one day. I was thoroughly invested in this story! I came across this book from the authors account and have been waiting for this book and was so happy to read early. Hadley and Declan were so fun to read. Declan was so attentive and patient. I really love pregnancy trope and was drawn to this book because of it but the cowboy/biker was another interest of mine. Hadley’s ex fiancé leaves her due to infertility issues and she goes home to meet Declan.

Thank you to Emma Slate and Book Funnel for this ARC!! Hadley and Declan had a sweet story! Personally, this one was a standard 3 star read but had the potential to be 4 or 5! Huckleberry Hill was really marketed as an accidental pregnancy but really that was only about 10% of the last part of the book which, depending on what tropes you like, could be a pro or a con. A lot of points were reiterated more times than felt necessary, especially ones that served more to set up the next book or the series rather than serving Hadley or Declan’s story. Overall though this was a sweet book and I’ll probably pick up the next when it comes out!

Hadley is dumped when her fianance leaves her because she cannot have children she goes home to heal. What she finds in Declan a man willing to accept her just as she is, not that she is ready to believe that at first. What follows is a romance that blooms into love with calm patients from Declan. He knows Hadley is not ready but he also knows she is his.
A really lovely book

I was stoked to receive an ARC of this book because I LOVED Emma’s Tarnished Angels series. This book is a solid start to a new series! Definitely recommend. It was nice to see a quick glimpse of some past characters and to meet all the new ones. More of a feel good story and not nearly as intense as some of her other books. Can’t wait to see what happens in the next one!

I was so happy to receive an ARC copy of this book. It was such a fast paced read and being thrown straight into Declan and Hadley’s story had me hooked from the start. A cowboy biker is not something I knew I needed in my life but holy moly I loved it. The setting was amazing, Declan and Hadley’s story was amazing and the writing was A-MA-ZING. 4 ⭐️ read 100% and would totally recommend to anyone in need of a quick read.

I was so excited when I received an arc copy of this book! I’ve never been chosen before and to have this be my first one….well I was over the moon excited!

I loved this book from the first chapter. The banter between Declan and Hadley was absolutely hilarious and so much fun. I love a witty, female main character and a quippy male character. It just made it so enjoyable to read, because the chemistry between these two was off the charts, right off the bat. I loved getting to know the other characters and the small town, and as someone that grew up in a small town, it just felt like coming home. And I cannot wait to get to know more about all of them. I will say, I absolutely loved Muddy. She was hilarious, and every scene with her had me laughing.

But again, Hadley and Declan were just a fantastic couple. I loved them right from the beginning. He was so wonderful to her. I love a MMC that just absolutely loves and would do anything for his FMC.

I'm also a huge fan of the surprise pregnancy trope and I thought that was wonderfully played out.

I cannot wait to read more in this series and find out about the other characters. I loved the surprise cameo later in the book. It just felt like... the perfect little tie in and nod to her previous series, which I absolutely loved as well.

Five out of five stars, I cannot wait to read this over again, as well as continue with this series, which I think is going to be just as good, if not better than the Tarnished Angels series.

Huckleberry Hill by @EmmaSlateAuthor
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Small town romance with cowboys, motorcycles, he falls first, age gap, and a quirky grandma I absolutely flew through this book and read it in like 4 hours! I fell in love with Declan and Hadley. Fun fact: one of my favorite scenes involves an ex-boyfriend, a bar, and a motorcycle 😉

Declan has such a calm demeanor. His easy going attitude with that handsome face AND he used to be famous in the rodeo?! Honestly, Hadley never stood a chance 😅

And I love how Loyal and smart and strong Hadley is. She has been through some crazy stuff, but she still cares about the people around her and is learning to fully stand on her own two feet.

Also, I am not usually a fan of surprise pregnancy, BUT this was SO expertly done that I think it made the book even better - so if it’s not your usual go to, DEFINITELY give it a chance! 👀

Thank you to Emma and her team for this ARC! I’m sorry it took so long!

Thank you, Emma, for the ARC

I flew through this book. It was easy flowing, the perfect amount of spice, and some serious laugh out loud moments.

Hadley came across as a very relatable character, and at times, you just wanted to dive in and give her a hug.

Declan literally was perfection. perfect swoon comments from him and the way he loved our girl.... I'm here for it.

As for that ending, well, I'm going to need the next book ASAP!

i would definitely recommend this book 📖

I absolutely LOVED this book from the start. It immediately pulled me in with its warm cozy feeling. I was smiling through the majority of this book. This is a book to read if you just want to feel good and have that warm feeling. The cozy vibes from the small town charm were everything. I aspire to be muddy when I’m her age she is everything! This was such a sweet story that will stay in my heart for a long time! This story centers around finding out that home is more than just a place, it’s a person.

Hadley is probably one of my favorite FMC’s I’ve read this year. All loyalty and sass, but wears her heart on her sleeve. After moving back to her home town from New York City and leaving a life she thought she wanted behind her. She finds exactly what she was looking for in an unexpected way. Her family ranch’s new wrangler, Declan.

Declan, can I have more of this man?! The ultimate golden retriever MMC. He loves with his whole heart and he knew from the moment he met Hadley that she would, somehow, be his. Declan & Hadley both found their way home to each other 🫶🏻

I received an ARC of this book and I absolutely devoured it in one day. I’m a big small town romance reader ( live in a small town, love a small town moment ).
The story was SO cute, and unique honestly. The banter that Declan and Hadley have is top tier, right from the beginning. Declan really listens to Hadley but pushed ( gently ) when she needed it.
Not only was their romance a surprise to her but she also gets her footing back by coming home, being reunited with her community after living in NYC with her twin Salem and their two friends Wyn and Poet. The dynamic between the four girls was also funny.
I loved the community/ family aspect of the book, it really does deliver on the Gilmore girls - 7 brides for 7 brothers vibe Emma promised!
Also who doesn’t love cute animals and hot men with pelts on their chest? Hadley is a pelt girl and I fear she’s correct.

There’s a baby goat, a motorcycle, and a meddling grandma. Three wonderful ways to heal Hadley’s broken heart. The tattooed wrangler who calls her Bear Snack? He’s okay, too. Escape the big city problems and go home to the ranch with her in this book.

Emma Slate writes better with every book. I’m very privileged to get an ARC copy of this story.

i was so obsessed with the tarnished angels men and the women that claimed their hearts...i didn't want to leave but entering the small town, cowboy/ranch era with emma slate made things better.
never fails that emma's mmc's meet their woman and fall extremely fast and hard and will move all the mountains to get them to love them back. i loved watching declan do exactly that. his flirtiness with hadley and her 'bear snack' nickname had me snort laughing thru the night. this man did everything in his power to learn everything about her.
and hadley. my girl. i connected with her and her fertility struggle. i loved her and she needed all the hugs. but watching her grow on her journey after her world came crashing down and moving back home, refinding her roots...learning to open up again and allowing herself to find happiness was everything i didn't know i needed.
i'm very excited to be in this small town and potentially have my heart broke again by letting emma's men in my life a second time.
thank you Emma Slate for trusting me with an early copy and for giving us this man named declan

Hadley Powell comes back to her family's ranch in Idaho after her fiancé leaves her upon learning that she cannot have children. There, she encounters Declan Brewer, a wrangler employed by her father. They quickly establish a strong friendship; Declan inherently understands Hadley. As their bond evolves into a secret romance, Declan is determined to show Hadley that he is the one who can truly cherish her.

▪︎ Friends to lovers
▪︎ Age gap
▪︎ Late-night trail rides
▪︎ Forbidden
▪︎ One sleeping bag
▪︎ Healing
▪︎ He falls first
▪︎ Cowboy biker
▪︎ Surprise pregnancy
▪︎ Small town
▪︎ Cinnamon roll MMC with a dirty mouth

Hadley and Declan were so much fun to read, I couldn't get enough. The story pulls you in from the start and does not let go. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers vibes with a twist of Hart of Dixie. Possessive alpha male who's got other ways of solving a fight? 🤭 Sign me up! Declan is a man who knows what he wants and won't be scared to show it.

This book truly emphasizes how swiftly life can change. It hit home when Hadley said, "𝑰 𝒅𝒊𝒅𝒏’𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒂𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒆 𝒂 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒎𝒚𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒇 𝒕𝒐 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒉𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆."

And I must say… the MMC and cowboy extraordinaire Declan is absolutely 🔥🔥🔥. His emotional maturity was off the charts at 10/10. I appreciated how he was straightforward, got to the heart of the matter, and was completely honest about his feelings. He was incredibly supportive, attentive, and patient, which I believe significantly contributed to Hadley’s character development and her journey to discover what she truly wanted.

I adored how they instantly connected, and whenever Hadley felt overwhelmed or anxious, she instinctively turned to Declan. Their transition from friends to lovers was crafted beautifully, with a medium burn that allowed the flirtation and tension to build perfectly. I particularly enjoyed their camping trip at the hot springs, baby goat, and of course, the moment he carried her out of the bar over his shoulder. 😍

I melted for one of my favorite mini-tropes:
"
“𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒐𝒏,” 𝑫𝒆𝒄𝒍𝒂𝒏 𝒔𝒂𝒊𝒅, 𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒕𝒉. “𝑾𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒘𝒆 𝒈𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒈?” “𝑾𝒆’𝒓𝒆 𝒈𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒅𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆.” “𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒅𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆?” 𝑰 𝒂𝒔𝒌𝒆𝒅 𝒊𝒏 𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒆. “𝑮𝒖𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒚𝒐𝒖’𝒍𝒍 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒖𝒕.” 𝑯𝒆 𝒉𝒆𝒍𝒅 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒎𝒆. "
"

I was delighted to receive this as an ARC. Having adored Emma’s Tarnished Angels series, I was certain this one would be fantastic; the appearance of Mia and Colt had me screaming with excitement!! 🥰

Huge thanks to the author Emma Slate for providing yet another outstanding book. ❤️❤️

I got an ARC of this book. Huckleberry Hill was a light-hearted story of rejection, romance and happily ever after. I loved the FMC Hadley. She came home to heal from a bad break up and ran smack dab into the half naked gorgeous MMC while running from a bear. He saved her that night and from then on. They became a hot item pretty quick . Loved how he talked dirty to her ! They faced a few conflicts / challenges but ended up in love . Lots of great supporting characters in the book also. The grandmother is a hoot !

MUST READ- Okay but can anyone scream PERFECT. Emma Slate, how did you know my husband planned a trip for our anniversary in the same swoony area of Huckleberry Hill?! Hadley and Declan’s story was the perfect amount of forbidden love/tension and soft and squishy love. Character’s were wonderful and I think we all love a protective stud muffin that defends their love honor while honoring autonomy and self decisions! However, if my husband ate my last piece of bacon off my plate without asking I’d probably throw down 😂 I definitely need to know more because ending cliff hanger?! I already need a release date! I’d say my first cowboy romance made me happy as a clam! Read the whole thing in one sitting 😎💐 Thank you all for allowing me to be an ARC reader. I have loved every moment of being able to participate.

I did not think I was going to receive an ARC but I’m so glad I did! I loved the Tarnished Angels Series and knew I wanted to read this one as well.

I loved Hadley and Declan’s story! It’s in a small town, and Hadley is running home after heartbreak in New York. The characters were amazing! I loved all the support that Hadley had and the baby goat was just adorable. I would’ve loved to have Declan’s point on view, but overall I enjoyed reading this book. I can’t wait for Salem’s book! I want to know what happened and why she won’t go home.
I also loved the little cameo! 😉

I had the privilege of receiving an ARC of Huckleberry Hill.
A cowboy that rides a motorcycle? YES PLEASE!
I swear I was born in the wrong part of the world. I feel like a ranch on the outskirts of a small town is where I am meant to be. Maybe in my next life. 😉
My favorite character in a story is usually the MMC or the FMC.. though I loved them both, my absolute favorite character was Muddy.
I laughed out loud and I swooned.
I am impatiently waiting for book 2 and officially a huge fan of the Saddles & Spurs series, but darn it Emma! How could you leave me hanging like that? 😩😍
