The MacKenzie Family #10.1

The Promise of Surrender

Rate this book
Mia Russo spent ten years working undercover, entrenched in the dregs of society before handing in her shield. Opening her own pawn shop is a piece of cake in comparison. All she needs is the bad attitude she developed on the streets and the shotgun under her counter to keep law and order. Until the day Zeke McBride walks into her shop.

Zeke knows Mia has every right not to trust him. He was the one who chose the next op instead of her. And all he can hope is that somewhere under the snarl and cynicism is a woman who can forgive. Because whether she trusts him or not, they’re going to have to work together to bring down the gang that’s decided Mia is their next target.

Liliana Hart spent five years teaching music in the public education system. She molded America’s youth, busted kids for smoking pot in the restrooms, and broke up illicit affairs behind the stage on a regular basis. (Liliana’s Addison Holmes Mystery Series, about a small town teacher who gets into a whole lot of trouble, is somewhat autobiographical, but she won’t confess to which parts).

Liliana began reading romance novels with all her new found free time, and when she ran out of things to read, she decided to write her own novels. The result was a 150,000 word thriller—a dazzling adventure—where the heroine was a thirty-year-old virgin assassin (Yes, you read that right). She couldn’t imagine why people weren’t knocking down her door to read it, but she persevered and began writing a second book. She finally got the hang of things, and eventually learned that losing one’s virginity wasn’t all that romantic after all. All of her books involve some kind of suspense (she just can't help herself), laughter, and a lot of steamy sex.

Since the failure of her first attempt, Liliana’s books have won awards such as: The Daphne Du Maurier, The Suzannah, The Linda Howard Award of Excellence, The Maggie, and many others. Her affiliations include Romance Writers of America and Mystery Writers of America.

Liliana loves to cook, and is addicted to reading, Internet Boggle, kickboxing, and Bones. She lives in a big, rambling house in Texas with a couple of cats to keep her company. She loves to get emails from readers.

Enjoy the Adventures!

All three stories were hot and heavy. The Hs are all mega alpha and possessive and the hs all are strong and sassy. There's humor and an emotional connection and burning heat.

I liked the first two stories but I felt like their past history needed to be delved into a bit more before all was resolved/forgiven. Especially in Mia and Zeke's case.

But my favorite was Liza and Grant's story. Both characters were awesome and their instant attraction was freakin hot. There was a bit more character development and the plot was fleshed out more. There was more suspense and action too. Only downside was the villain also happened to be Grant's ex lover. She's a psychotic killer and he has zero feelings for her other than bringing her to justice but still. I dont do OW/Om drama and that kind of rubbed me the wrong way. But even with that at the forefront of the story, I still really liked reading the conclusion to Liza and Grant's romance.

The Promise of Surrender is a second chance at love for Mia and Zeke. They were together because but couldn't put the other before their job. It wasn't easy be undercover cops so I could totally see how things would've ended between them. Years later, Zeke is finally up for the challenge: Putting Mia first.

It doesn't hurt that he is currently undercover when someone starts threatening Mia. So he goes secret alpha male and wants to do anything in his power to protect her but ya know - the job. Then there's Mia, who was having none of that shit. She was amazing through and through. She was most definitely my favorite character out of the two because she was a bad ass.

Need the rest of the series STAT.

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales

Quick & Dirty: Quick steamy read with intensely strong, stubborn characters.

Opening Sentence: She had him pegged for a cop the second he stepped out of the beat-up pickup truck.

The Review:

The Promise of Surrender is a novella and one of the quicker reads that I’ve had during the 1001 Dark Nights series. This is a story that is more about an interrupted relationship moving forward than about the actual plot of the gang after Mia, that part of the story is kept unresolved, I’m not sure if that is because it plays out in the actual novels in the series. I have not read anything else from this series.

Mia left Zeke years ago because he just couldn’t get over doing his job. Mia and Zeke were both undercover officers but Zeke just couldn’t get over the rush while Mia had to get away from the terrible things that could happen while being undercover. Zeke put his job before Mia so she walked away. Since then Mia has opened up a pawn shop and lived quietly in the town of Surrender, Montana. Then one day a biker comes into her shop looking for an item and threatening her shop and life if he doesn’t get it back.

Zeke is continuing in his undercover work when he shows up at Mia’s shop. Zeke has an ulterior motive because he isn’t done with Mia. He wants to prove that he belongs back in Mia’s life. Zeke is still doing his job as an undercover operative, because he knows why the bikers have targeted Mia.

Mia is an uncompromising, strong willed woman. I liked her and her purple hair. She is tough because she had to be. I really enjoyed her character. Zeke on the other hand is quite a big man and it used to the adrenaline he gets from the job. He understand that life can’t always go on like it has and he is ready to move on. My only issue was the fact that this relationship can only develop because he is finally tired of doing his job. He has finally seen what Mia wanted him to a long time ago, so really this relationship can only move on because he’s finally ready when Mia was years ago.

Overall, this was a really quick story that really didn’t complete much except for moving on to the next step with this relationship. The ending was kind of depressing and didn’t resolve anything with the gang after Mia. What I did really like about this book was the heat that poured between Mia and Zeke and the funny banter that they had together.

Notable Scene:

By the end of the second game, he was starting to worry that he might be doing the laundry and dishes after all. He’d won the first game. Barely. And she’d taken the second game that had been equally as close as the first.

“You want to quit?” she asked.

“Are you forfeiting? Because if you forfeit that means I win.” He waggled his eyebrows and said, “And I’ve been seeing my handprints on your ass in my head ever since I mentioned it.”

“You’re a sadistic bastard, McBride.”

“You never used to complain, baby.”

“Your break. Unless you want to forfeit. I’ve got a pretty amazing fantasy going through my head too. I’ll let you wear my apron while you’re doing the dishes.”

“I’m just adding a tally of strokes that are going to show red on that sweet ass of yours. Keep talking, sweetheart. My hand is itching.”

The corner of her mouth curled up in a smile and he recognized the look in her eyes. It was the look she had just before he usually found himself flat on his back with her hot mouth around his cock.

I love the MacKenzie family and all the books about them, so reading The Promise of Surrender was a no-brainer. And I loved it especially because the pace was steady from the beginning to the end.

Seven years ago Mia Russo left her job as an undercover police detective when an operation went south and several officers were killed and opened her pawn shop on the outskirts of the town of Surrender but the instincts that served her so well on the job are still alive. And she knows that trouble has come to town when Zeke McBride walks into her shop.

Zeke chose the job over Mia seven years ago and has regretted it every day since then. He's finally ready to retire and fight for a future with Mia, but he has one last op to complete and Mia is right in the middle of it.

Mia is my favorite character in this book. She's really street savvy, independent and strong. She does not pull her punches and she's not going to make it easy for Zeke to pick up from where they left off, not after the tears and pain she's gone through, not when she can't trust that he'll really walk away after this op.

I like that even though Mia left him, Zeke kept her on his radar and slowly worked his way back to her and was willing to do anything to show her that he was completely in. The chemistry between them was so intense and the ease with which they fell back into the familiar patterns of their relationship show just how good things had been between them. I wish that they hadn't let pride stand in their way for so long.

I loved that Cooper and Riley MacKenzie made appearances here, but this book only stoked my hunger for more books in this series and I cannot wait for Shane's story in February. You know I'm going to go on a re-read binge of the series to tide me over until then. I have one complaint though: it was too short and I finished it within a couple of hours.

Mia Russo is an enigma in Surrender, Montana. With a sleeve of ink, purple hair and no qualms carrying her gun, the former officer opened a pawn shop on the edge of town, keeps her head down and stays out of the fray. When her former love Zeke McBride strolls into her shop wanting to reconnect, Mia is suspicious of his motivations. Seven years and NOW he comes to her? Something smells in Surrender! Zeke laments every day that Mia wasn't by his side, and he's ready to hang up his undercover badge and make a life with her. Can he convince her to let him back in?

THE PROMISE OF SURRENDER is a novella in the MacKenzie Family series, and also a stand-alone addition to the innovative and fun 1001 Dark Nights series featuring sensual and erotic stories by a variety of popular authors inspired by the classic The Arabian Nights tale.

I actually really enjoyed this story. It had a bit of a dark…but not too dark…feel to it that appealed to me immensely. I love romantic suspense stories, and while this was short and sexy, Mia and Zeke's reconnection was perfect. Their chemistry was completely erotic and the furious, angry make-up sex, satisfying. The only bummer is that the ending was rushed and rather incomplete. Even so, this read definitely made me want to pick up more in the MacKenzie Family series.

Bottom Line: No OM/OW or sharing; no condom use; no BDSM/kink; no sexual assault; no violence/murder (but discussion of). - See more at: http://www.theromancereviews.com/view...

This is not the first story written by Liliana Hart that I've read! The first one I got in my hands actually even made it to my favorites list!
So, I already knew that I would like this novella! What I didn't expect was to actually love it so much!
It might have been short, but it gave us a pretty good feel of the characters and their background!

Mia is a tough young woman and former cop, who, after witnessing her best friend's murder in the line of duty, she quit her job and opened a pawn shop. She left her old life back, including Zeke, her partner and soul mate, who wanted to keep his dangerous job as an undercover agent.

Now, seven years later, a rookie undercover officer has come to her pawn shop looking for an item that a gang of bikers also craves. And, Zeke is in charge of the police force that investigates the matter.

Things soon start getting complicated, with the attraction between Mia and Zeke being painfully obvious even to us readers. But things are still unresolved between them. And, when the gang starts threatening Mia's life, they can only work together in order to save her.

A thrilling, steamy adventure that I just devoured! So much passion, so much action!
And, such a strong heroine! I totally loved her attitude, and when combined with Zeke? Phew! Just hot!

All in all, 5 stars for one of the hottest stories, full of action and excitement!

After witnessing the execution of her best friend, Rachel, undercover cop Mia Russo hands in her badge and starts a new life as the owner of a pawn shop near Surrender, Montana. But it’s not just her old job she leaves behind.

Zeke McBride prides himself on being the best at his work — undercover agent, commanding officer of a DEA Taskforce. Life endangering, adrenalin-pumping work, Zeke loves the job. Duty has always come first — that’s why Mia Russo left him seven years ago. Dangerous circumstances have given Zeke the chance to come face-to-face with Mia again, and he’s not going to let her walk away this time.

Liliana Hart’s The Promise of Surrender is the newest offering of the 1001 Dark Nights Series, as well as being the latest offering in her MacKenzie Family Series. It’s a fast-paced, standalone novella that, for this reader, ended too soon. Hart’s characters are rock solid — their dialogue rings true and their actions believable. The attraction between Mia and Zeke sizzles from the moment he walks into her pawn shop, and the heat rockets off the charts from there.

The plot is well thought out and its resolution satisfying. And, oh, let me mention again — the electricity between Mia and Zeke could fulfill the needs of any major power grid in North America. The only kind of blackouts in this novella are orgasmic — well done, Ms. Hart!

Note: The Promise of Surrender is a novella written for adult entertainment. Set in the West, it is not a Western, but rather a very nice bedtime tale for the grown-ups — not for the little doggies.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Another Mackenzie episode, which I hadn't read from my library & I really enjoyed Seeing how Zeke McBride comes back to Surrender on an undercover mission, though it wasn't really as the People of Surrender knows him & The Love of his life Mia Russo, is there & she's the one he's come to see, 1st off he wants her back as they shouldn't have parted 7yrs prior when she left the police force & left him, well he's the one that left.
But heck she JUST KNEW he was there AS SOON, as he came to the door without actually knowing he was there & what a connection that is.
So he's there knowing she's got what he needs, well his unit does as he sent the person who sold it to her. And she knows he knows that she's lying when she claims she hasn't a clue. But after she Biker Club was looking for it she knew there was something about it, other than it being a beautiful antique.
anyways it is another great Mackenzie episode, though pretty short, there was just enough there getting to know these 2 BUT it would be GREAT if we see more of them & how Zeke settles in surrender..... & THEIR HOT Nights/days, which ever way 😘😘

let me just say Lilliana Hart is one of my one click authors, She writes It i buy it. She has yet to disappoint me and this one did not.

You know right from the start that this book is going to be fast paces and hot as hell, Mia used to be a cop and now she owns a pawn shop, A biker and an ugly one at that comes in looking for a jewelry box, She tells him she has no idea what he is talking about although she has the box. I mean come on a biker and a jewelry box???? Yea right gotta be something up with that.
Next thing she knows her old hook up (boyfriend and partner) is there and that is one person she really did not want back in her life in any shape or form. Zeke is determined to win back Mia AND keep her safe as well as get that darn box all at the same time.

Grab this book and Hop on your hog and join in on this hot and fun ride! If you have read Lilliana Hart before you know she keeps you on your toes and and gets is all panting while giving us one of the best reads in a long time!

This novella is part of the MacKenzie series

Meet the feisty Mia Russo. Mia has spent the last decade working undercover and she was entrenched in the dregs of society before handing in her shield for the final time. When Mia finally opens her own pawn shop, Mia finds it a piece of cake in comparison. All Mia needs now is the bad attitude that she developed pretty darn good on the streets and she has the shotgun under her counter to keep law and order and kick out people who are rude and disrespectful. That's until the day that Zeke McBride walks into her shop.

Now meet Zeke McBride. Zeke has always known that Mia has every right not to trust him. Zeke was the one who chose the next undercover op instead of choosing her. All Zeke can hope and pray hard for is that somewhere under the snarl and sarcasm is a woman who can forgive. Even if Mia trusts Zeke or not. Mia and Zeke realise they’re going to have to work together to try and bring down the gang that’s now decided that Mia is their next target.

Liliana Hart's books are so amazing, i love it how she writes 5* books

A novella from the
MacKenzie family world
, The Promise of Surrender worked fairly well as a standalone, since the main characters aren't MacKenzies. A few come up in the story, but not to the point that you'd need to know their stories ahead of time.

Promise is a second chance romance--a troupe that works well in a shorter (ie novella) format, since the h/h already have a history. In this case, it's been seven years since Mia and Zeke have seen each other, since he let his job come between them and she left. But now circumstances (only somewhat orchestrated by Zeke) have thrown them back together, and he at least is determined that they're going to make up for lost time.

Enjoyable characters with a decent amount of suspense--however, while the romantic plot ends well, the suspense one felt unfinished. Still, this could be a good intro to the series for newbies.

Rating: 4 stars / B+

Need more MacKenzie's

This novella sparked more interest on what is happening with the family. We get to see Cooper and Riley and Lane from the previous novella. Now I can't wait until Feb for the new books.

Mia left undercover work seven year ago. She started her own pawn shop just outside of Surrender and she hasn't left her instincts behind. Zeke chose the job over Mia seven years ago. Now he is back working his "last" op and wanting Mia back. He's spend his teenage years with the MacKenzie family and is quite familiar with Surrender.

But Zeke's op is right in the middle of Mia's life. She has something a motorcycle gang wants and it's not for sale. Mia is not sure that she can fully trust Zeke with her heart again. Will she open up, is this really Zeke's last op???

A lovely Novella focusing on Zeke McBride and Mia Russo.

Mia had spent 10 years undercover entrenched in the dregs of society. When an op went bad, she resigned and started her new life by opening a pawn shop. Zeke and Mia had been together and she thought they had something. But, the last she saw him, he had chosen the next Op instead of her.

Now Zeke arrived in Surrender, MT and she does not trust him. But, when a motorcycle gang breaks into her shop, Zeke, Mia and the local Sheriff, Cooper MacKenzie need to work together to keep her safe and to take down the gang.

You will enjoy this Novella. It is a easy read adn you even get caught up with Sheriff Department in Surrender and other MacKenzie's.

This was a great addition to the series but felt unfinished...what happened with the Vaqueros?! Are they still after Mia??? That was a HUGE part in the book and it was left unanswered.
I loved the characters, they had history and great chemistry that was off the charts and the scenes between them were extremely steamy.
We get to see Riley and Cooper which is always great but again I personally felt like this story was left with unanswered questions. Hopefully these questions get answered later in the next book.

The latest entry in the Mackenzie series introduces us to Zeke, an old friend of Cooper Mackenzie, and Mia. This is a novella, so I don't want to give too much away. That being said, take one dominant male determined to get his girl, a feisty female sassy enough to get herself into some trouble, add in some steamy love scenes (thinks pool table!), and you have a great entry into this long running series. While this story can be comfortably read as a stand alone, I do recommend reading previous entries for a more fulfilling experience.

Loved it!

‘The Promise of Surrender,’ was a quick, sexy, and captivating read! The story unfolds with Zeke riding into town and bring all kinds of chaos onto Mia’s doorstep. Seven years have come and gone, and still the pull between these two characters is strong. Unable to resist falling into be another, Mia is waiting for the other shoe to drop. Can she trust Zeke again? Or will he ride out of her life and tear her world apart?

This is a side story from the MacKenzie's series. It takes place in and around Surrender, MT and features a few of the main Mackenzie cast.

Overall the story was okay. I didn't really feel the criminal aspect was successfully concluded however. If the gang was so sure about the box it seems they would have done more about it.

Also, for all the anger and hurt between the couple, it was pretty much smooth sailing from the get go.

It doesn't matter who these books feature the MacKenzie family Series is amazing, they envelop everyone into their community. This story I felt ended a bit sudden, would have been nice to either know that the bikers had been apprehended or something had happened, but maybe we'll get that another time. Another great read with a rock solid male and a strong woman behind him!

very good and interesting read, this is another book that's more an add on to the mackenzies series. although they are mentioned and some of them involved with the story, they are not the main characters. zeke and mia are hot together, you almost feel the sparks while reading. the story topic is a bit different so makes it worth the read, I enjoyed it and was glad I bought it

Enjoyable

I liked this book but wish it was longer. Another couple of chapters
Would have added to the storyline and wouldn't have given the book such an abrupt ending. I was ready to turn the page and find out how Mia and Zeke settled their differences only to find the story was over.

Good

While I love the MacKenzie series, this Novella left me a little empty. The introduction of new caricatures on the outskirts of their family needed some more background. I never really got into them like with the other books. But, as always it was east to read and well written.
