Very informative, even for someone who's been T1 for 20 years (like me). My only gripe for the book is the fact that it's (mostly) written for an audience of parents who are studying up on T1 because their child was diagnosed. For me, as the diabetic, it's a little off-putting because the entire book felt like it was talking about someone else; the constant references to 'your child' did grow a little tiresome after awhile. I understand the reasons why the author formatted the book in this way, but I probably would not have picked up the book had I known it was written with the caregiver in mind. That being said, it was still an info-packed read.

Good resource for the newly diagnosed. It will help you understand what is happening, what your treatment options are and help you learn the scientific lingo. It is not very helpful after that. Mostly because treatment options and medical devices/drugs change so often. And you have to find the plan that works best for you!! Better books are ‘think like a pancreas’ and ‘sugar surfing’. Those two books will help you fine tune your treatment and teach you how to make decisions on the fly!

Finally, someone has written a book tailored to the needs of people with type one diabetes. Type one and type two diabetes are so different both in their causes and treatments, but most books lump them together, paying the lions share of attention to type two diabetes. I suppose that makes sense because type two diabetes has a chance of being either slow down or reversed while type one diabetes can’t be. Still, most diabetes books make me feel left out and frustrated because there isn’t much guidance on living completely dependently on insulin and carb counting. This book is different. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of living with and thriving with type one diabetes which is an autoimmune disorder. I am so glad I found this book and I’m sure I will revisit it from time to time as new situations arise.

An excellent primer for the patient and parent of T1D. Highly recommend starting here. Took my time reading, for absorption.

Excellent informative read. I recommend this as step 1 book reading for anyone who needs a thorough overview this disease. (Is thorough overview a contradiction?) It is straightforward and covers a lot of areas.
