This book accompanied an exhibition in 2002 at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, NY. I don't know if all the works that were displayed are represented in the catalog, but what is reproduced here is a fine cross-section of postwar American work. Artists I know and admire for their collage--Joseph Cornell, Anne Ryan, Miriam Schapiro, Nancy Spero, Romare Bearden, Christian Marclay; artists I don't necessarily associate with collage; artists I know slightly; and artists I don't know at all--Alfonso Ossorio , Bruce Conner and Lane Twitchell particularly caught my eye--wow. A feast for the eye.
The essays were instructive but a bit too dry and scholarly for my taste. Still, they contain a lot of good information and analysis. The crucial role that photography and easily manipulated, disposable, and constantly changing media in general play in the shaping of our current culture and as a catalyst to the pervasiveness of assembled art were recurrent themes.
Great stuff. Looking forward to seeing where it journeys next.
