Elmore John Leonard lived in Dallas, Oklahoma City and Memphis before settling in Detroit in 1935. After serving in the navy, he studied English literature at the University of Detroit where he entered a short story competition. His earliest published novels in the 1950s were westerns, but Leonard went on to specialize in crime fiction and suspense thrillers, many of which have been adapted into motion pictures.
I wanted something 'different', and Elmore Leonard delivers.
Fast paced, with characters that are etched like an impressionist painting. A lot of shooting, bad guys that are almost likeable, and good guys who are loners.
I think my rating would be higher if I wasn't on a romance novel kick. I only read 2 of the three novels, and that was enough to cleanse my palate.
Basically a money-grab. The previously published "Moonshine War" is pretty good. But "City Primeval" and "Gold Coast" are both ' 1-star-from-storage ' toss-offs.
