Chick Butler was run out of Hard Rock by Jefferson Farrell, who felt that Chick was not good enough for his daughter Jane.
Jefferson was a saloon owner and well-known around Hard Rock for his wealth and power.
Twenty years later, and now federal Deputy Marshal, Chick returns to the town on a job, re-igniting Jefferson’s anger.
A violent encounter leads Chick into Jefferson’s saloon, where he learns that his former lover, Jane, had been forced to leave home when he was run out of town and hadn’t been seen since.
Jane had a son, Charles, who came to Hard Rock to meet his grandfather.
But it would seem that Jefferson merely led the boy astray, filling his head with lies about his past.
With a robber gang, a murder and a son who resents him, the future does not seem hopeful.
Can he untangle the vicious web of lies in time?
Or will he be silenced once and for all…?
‘A rollicking good read, full of danger and suspense’ – bestselling author Tom Casey
Chuck Mason (1928), is one of fifty pseudonyms for British author, Donald S. Rowland, who was born in Norfolk, England. Rowland is married with three children, and previously had a variety of jobs, including film projectionist and Senior Clerk and Local Government Officer. It was only in 1964 that he dedicated his time to writing full-time and has since written a variety of novels, from science-fiction to westerns.
I received a free electronic copy of this western novel from Netgalley, Chuck Mason, and Endeavour Press - Pioneering Press in exchange for an honest review. thank you all, for sharing your hard work with me. This book was copyrighted and first printed in 1966 by John Gresham Limited.
GNA I love that Endeavour press is re-cycling some of the old western novels from the 1960's. Although most are not politically correct they are interesting tales told well, and I appreciate having access to the re-run. Back Trail features U.S. Deputy Marshal Chick Butler, returning to Hard Rock twenty years after he was thrown out of town a penniless teen by the father of his girl, Jane Farrell. Chick is there to help the local law clear up several stage robbery's and some random rustling. Imagine his surprise when the first stranger he meets in Hard Rock turns out to be his own - surprise - son. And it goes downhill, from there.
A fast read, Back Trail is a great way to spend an afternoon visiting the past. Pub date Jan 27, 2017 Received Jan 31, 2017
A U.S. Marshal/A Woman/An Unknown Son/Two Crooks/Stolen Gold/
A U.S. Marshal is dispatched to the town he was from, but had been beaten and run out of the town 20 years earlier. He returns at the request of the local sheriff to hunt for the robbers and help him determine who the robbers are. He finds his old girlfriend had his baby son and the grand father had destroyed them. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
I read for pleasure and relaxation, not to write reviews. I feel reviews should be written by recognized critics and that the star system of rating should be sufficient for most readers.
Excellent book! Great writing and fast flowing story. Enjoyed it when he showed up back in his hometown as a US Marshall. More than a few people were taken back with that. I highly recommend this book and author. I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.
