Preaching the Word

Luke: That You May Know the Truth

Rate this book
Luke’s carefully researched and orderly account of the life of Christ is one of the finest pieces of historical writing from the ancient world. More importantly, it boldly proclaims the story and significance of Jesus, emphasizing his “gospel” as good news for the whole world.

In this illuminating commentary, respected pastor R. Kent Hughes explores Luke’s historical claims about the life of Christ and his overarching message, offering helpful insights into the biblical text and pastoral reflections on how it applies to everyday life.

Written to help preachers and Bible teachers communicate God’s Word more effectively, this commentary explores how the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus constitute the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy and guarantee salvation to all who believe on his name.

Love these commentaries! They’re a great resource for sermon prep but also for daily Bible study. Can’t believe I started this back in August, but I appreciate how it forced me to slow down and work through just a few verses at a time. Hughes does a great job exegeting the text, adding contextual details, and writing with a worshipful tone!

More like a collection of sermons than a commentary, which limits its usefulness. Occasionally helpful for illustration and application suggestions, but the textual explanation is more "finished product" than "nitty gritty", which is not what I'm looking a commentary as I prepare to preach. I wonder if Kent Hughes' preaching style is as formal and generic as it appears here, or whether (more likely) that's a limitation imposed by editing a set of sermons for wide publication.

Perhaps the best commentary I’ve ever read. Informative, convicting, inspirational…and so well written. Truly a gem!

A collection of Hughes' sermons when he preached, slowly, through the gospel of Luke. I appreciate this commentary series but I don't always like every volume. Some of these sermons were particularly dated as they were filled with culture war mumbo jumbo. But the fan of Hughes's preaching will find plenty to chew on in this massive tome.

This is a good volume from this series (some are better than others). For an expositional commentary it is still quite rich with theological depth.

Only read 2/107 of the chapters/sermons so far, but the layout, approach, and writing is fantastic!

For its purpose (helping to write a sermon once the text itself and then other commentaries have been consulted) it serves as a worthy addition to the preachers preparation.

Frankly, I've also just found it incredibly refreshing to read as a late night devotional as well.

Lastly, having an index of the sermon illustrations used at the back is a phenomenal resource - Good job Kent!

(I'll update if my opinion changes once I've read more)
