Introducing the Penny Detective 2 As private detectives go Morris Shannon, is not in the same league as Poirot or Holmes. He is going through what can only be described as a ‘lull’ in business, when the beautiful Katarina Falcone walks into his office and asks him to find her brother From sleeping until noon, watching afternoon TV and getting drunk, he is thrown into an investigation that very quickly develops into something inexplicably grimmer than just a search for a missing person. Backed up by his alcoholic and seldom sober sidekick Shoddy, Morris tries to separate the lies from truth in a classic who-done-it set against a backdrop of the decaying streets of Merseyside in the mid 1980s. The Penny Detective 2 will keep you in suspense until the last page, and provide a few laughs, and some subtle twists along the way; when you step into the twilight world of Morris and Shoddy as they take on another investigation. This is the second book in the Penny Detective series.
The Post Online: A New detective on the Block “Belgium has Hercule Poirot, Oxford has Inspector Morse and now Liverpool has Morris Shannon..........”
“Funny......Intriguing and a Great read.......What more do you need from a detective story....”
Another good one! Morris is the kind of guy I like. Just a guy but not ordinary. He drinks booze that I have heard of and eats whatever is handy. Doesn't cook or drink wine. Tough guy when he has to be. His adventures keep me guessing. Next book ready?
Having read and thoroughly enjoyed several books in this series, I think The Italian Affair is my favourite so far. Mogsy and his sidekick, Shoddy, are an eccentric couple of detectives living in a sleazy, dysfunctional world of violence and mistrust and yet, they remain totally credible, likeable characters amongst the cast of equally credible misfits and weirdos that John Tallon Jones creates. Against that background his story reveals a group of grifters who ably manage a profitable, complex scam, cleverly demonstrating that intelligence has nothing to do with position in a class-structured society. This entertaining book keeps the reader guessing with twists at every turn of the page. I loved the ending and had absolutely no idea of where this tale would lead. I have no hesitation in recommending The Italian Affair.
This was an enjoyable read and the second I have read in the Penny Detective series. The character of Morris Shannon is really well-developed and believable, and I can imagine him and his pal Shoddy stumbling their way through life as each new case unveils and keeps the wolf from the door. In this book what starts out as a straight-forward case turns out to be a complicated plot where nothing is as it seems and people are not who they say they are. Twists and turns and surprises keep this book flowing, and the wit of the author lies just below the surface to make this a really good read. I thought I was good at predicting outcomes of whodunits but I didn’t get this one!
I enjoyed following the story of the humble private detective Morris Shannon aka "Moggsy" and his pal as they try and unravel a case which seemed simple at first but got more complex as the tale went on. The Italian Affair had me wondering what happened next with the humble detective after the story ended! A perfect read and very unique! There were many twists and turns that had me surprised, but impressed. Highly recommended!
The ending of this book was brilliant and I was not expecting it. Well done the author for completely fooling me. the story is well written and set in the 1980s in the mythical town of Croxley, which is near Liverpool. What I love about the whole series is that all the books are so easy to read, they are very original and laced with irony. Terrific writing!
A quality super highway suspense series by Jones!! the story just goes on and on... and finally you find yourself at the end of it... with the opposite of what you suspected!! Amazing! Jones is a genius!! A breathtaking thriller of the best quality one does not meet so often. If you don't know the Penny Detective series, grab it now, you might be missing a killer!!!
Great book with a fantastic ending. this time Moggsy and his sidekick Shoddy get involved with a search for a missing person, which leads to something much darker. recommended reading.
