A soldier wounded in France before the United States entered WW I finds himself stationed in Marfa, Texas, as a medic with the Army. The cavalry out of Camp Marfa was engaged in chasing bandits who crossed over the Rio Grande and raided the Big Bend area of Texas. James Henry McCraw grew up south of Marfa, had been a soldier briefly in the Civil War and now he lived in town with his grand daughter. At the end of his life, he befriends the wounded soldier, Gideon Leander, and they form a friendship based on stories and hard work. For the first time, airplanes play a major role in patrolling the Rio Grande.
