St David’s Day 1978 proved to be a momentous occasion for Swansea City Football Club as it marked the appointment of Liverpool & Wales star John Toshack as their new player-manager. The Swans, then based at the Vetch Field, were languishing in the Fourth Division with only a few years having passed since their re-election back into the Football League. ‘Tosh’ became the youngest player-manager in the country and so began a steady climb which culminated with the Swans finishing sixth in the old First Division. Infact, that 1981/ 82 season saw the club remain in the top six throughout the whole campaign. From the Fourth to the First details the incredible rise, documenting each season, the results, the players involved and the excitement generated. Illustrated biographies are also included of many of the Tosh “Super Swans” such as Welsh shining lights Robbie James, Alan Curtis and Leighton James through to the established names of Bob Latchford, Ian Callaghan, Alan Waddle and many other names. The story is a remarkable one and the type of which will never be repeated but what a tale it is! Includes contributions from the fans and those involved and the book is written by someone that has contributed extensively to documenting Welsh football history. Remembering a golden time in Welsh football, From the Fourth to the First: Swansea City FC during the John Toshack Years 1978 - 1984 celebrates a time when you really could ‘Be proud to be a Swan.’
