It was just supposed to be a “friends with benefits” type of fling. Feelings were never supposed to get in the way. Drew Daley never thought Courtney Page would be the one to change all that.
He watched her walk away to pursue her own dreams while Drew’s Marine Corps orders sent him packing for a tour of duty in Afghanistan. Something told him to never let her go; to fight for her and his country.
Can a decision from years ago make all the difference in one’s future?
Time has passed. People have changed. Lives have gone in different directions. Drew returns broken and torn after nearly eighteen months overseas and everything isn’t what it was when he left. Life after deployment isn’t nearly as easy to fit into as he thought. Until new friends and familiar faces enter his life and everything changes.
When his mind is trying to piece together all the puzzles surrounding his life, Cole Porter might just be the one to heal his broken heart and guide him in the right direction. However something about Cole is vaguely familiar to Drew. Despite what his head tells him he begins to get closer to her.
Will Drew finally be able to let his heart heal and move on? Sometimes you have to face your dreams and fears all at once in order to recover. Otherwise you may never heal the broken pieces inside of you.
Broken Barriers (Barriers #4) by Sara Shirley Drew Daley walks away from the love of his life, Courtney Page, when his orders with the Marine Corps took him to Afghanistan. Eighteen months later, he returns a broken man.
If you follow my blog and/or reviews, you know that I tend to read paranormal, urban fantasy, hockey romances, and rock romances. Yes, it is kind of a strange combination. Anyway, I started reading the Barriers Series because the first book fell in the hockey romance category. I am so glad I continued this series. If I were to have looked at this book as a standalone, I probably would have passed it up, which would have been unfortunate because I loved this book.
Sara Shirley does such a tremendous job with her character development. My heart completely goes out to all of her characters. They are all so believable, facing real-life issues. None of them are perfect, but that is what makes them charming.
We met Drew in Josh & Sam's story Hidden Barriers (Barriers #2). Drew is Sam’s younger brother who fell in love with Josh’s little sister Courtney Page, who we met in Frozen Barriers (Barriers #1).
The plot is noteworthy. The ending was incredible. I don’t want to give anything away, so I’m not going to say much except: Drew suffers from PTSD when he gets back from the war, Courtney married someone else, and he meets Cole Porter, the women who could potentially heal his broken heart. Let me just say, wow.
You could probably read this book as a standalone, but I recommend that you read the rest of the series first. There are things that happen, especially in book two, that are important to this story.
If you have already read books in the Barriers series, you will definitely want to read this novel. If you haven’t tried this series and enjoy contemporary romances with genuine characters you will want to pick up this series. Sara Shirley is a gifted writer. I could not put this book down, flying through it in a day.

Sara Shirley has done it again!!! I have loved this series since the beginning. And, this book is no different. When I read Hidden Barriers I had to know about Sam's older brother Drew. He was working withe her dad at the law firm. Sam kept saying Drew had a thing for Josh's sister Courtney. I fell in love with Courtney in book one Frozen Barriers . Courtney is Josh and Jeremy's younger, adorable, caring, beautiful younger sister. She's always there for her brothers and at times you'd forget she's younger then them both. I was stoked to find out this was their story.
Drew and Courtney were only supposed to be a friends with benefits. But, anybody that's ever done that knows one of them always catches feelings. Drew had caught feelings. He fell in love with Courtney but couldn't say the words. When he on tour with the Marines he came back to find Courtney engaged. Before he left again he gave her a letter pouring his heart out to Courtney.
Drew was devastated to find out Courtney went through with getting married. Now, that he's back for good Drew doesn't know where to start or what to do. Not only is his heart broken from Courtney getting married. And, moving on from her is impossible. Courtney is his sister Sam sister-in-law. That isn't Drew's only problem. He's out of the Marine's. But, Drew is suffering from PTSD. Between the nightmares, the cold sweats and lets not talk about touching him.
Drew makes the decision to go to his parents lake house for the summer to regroup. Drew must figure out what's next for him. How is he going to move on from Courtney when wherever he looks she's there. He must figure out what he's going to do for a job. His biggest thing to figure out. His PTSD and what/how to calm it and move forward.
While Drew is at the lake house he keeps trying to figure everything out. When Drew is out in town he becomes friends with Everett who also served in the Marines. He meets Cole who owns a bakery and is a photographer. Cole gets him to talk to Marty who also was in the service. Drew meeting Everett and ESP Marty was the best thing for Drew. Talking to them was probably the best thing for Drew.
Drew was ready to move on from Courtney. Cole was the perfect person for Drew. Both Drew and Cole were broken. Drew had lost Courtney. Cole too had lost someone bc of the service and he didn't fight for her. Cole brought out the best in Drew. They had an instant connection. And, not just a physical one. Their emotional one was strong. Both were fighting their own head and heart while trying to help the other one heal. There was so many times these 2 had me hysterically laughing.
Cole was a very strong, compassionate, caring women. She def didn't take crap from anybody. Cole had such a hard year. But, when she looks at Drew everything changes. She can see the good in Drew even if he doesn't see it himself. Cole isn't afraid to make Drew work for it at times too. Which usually had me hysterical.
I loved seeing past characters in this book. Drew and Josh had such an awesome relationship. Josh seemed to always know what to say and not say at the right time. Sam. I still love Sam. One of my fav parts is Josh and Sam son. After one afternoon with Uncle Drew and he's screaming boobies 24/7. Then, listening to Sam going off is even more hysterical.
I really loved everything about this book. Except the end!! Man, when I tell you I hadn't hated an ending to a book in SO SO long. And, I didn't hate it because it ended with Drew not getting a HEA or not doing what I hoped or with the person I hoped. I hated it because it made no sense to me. I mean it was going great and then bam!! It was different and completely out of left field. I am not going to tell you what happened because that would be cruel. I will say it wasn't explained!! Why did it happen? What is going on to make it better? How is everyone around/involved dealing with it? Will it get better? None of it was explained. At all!! I finished and was literally left dumb founded!! But, Sara handled the PTSD brilliantly. She really did her homework on it and you can tell. I'm really upset this is the last book in the series. It was an awesome and beautiful series. I will miss the characters in it. I can't wait to what Sara writes next.

Drew’s barriers are broken. They were broken the day he walked away from Courtney, the love of his life. If only he had said those three little words to her before he left. Drew is now home after a deployment overseas and is still broken and proof that the battle does not end for a soldier when they come home. His love for Courtney gave him the push he needed while he was in Afghanistan. His love for Courtney will haunt him now that he is home. He cannot escape from this love. She is everywhere. She is in the pictures on the wall, she is in his memories and she is the face of the women he meets, including Cole. Drew feels an instant connection to Cole, one he hasn’t felt in a long time. One that is making him feel alive again, feel happy again, and possibly feel love again. Drew’s PTSD is making it difficult for him to move on, but a good dose of love could do the trick.
“You are the most special creature. You. You have helped me heal the broken pieces in me more than you will ever know. I can’t let you go. Not now and maybe not ever. I need you probably more than you need me.”
Can Cole be everything Drew’s heart needs? Will love conquer all and help Drew win the ultimate battle of his PTSD and his broken heart? You need to read this ending on your own. I refuse to spoil it. It was a beautiful way to round off an incredible series. I love that it was not the “safe” way out. The touch on PTSD was fabulous. It was not jammed down your throat, but gave you a small peek into what three little unspoken words can do to a broken man just looking to put the pieces back together.
I have received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I have read all the book in the series and I have to admit this is my second favourite one. I like Em's and Jeremy's story, loved Josh's and Sam, I really enjoyed Jake's and Lucy's story, but this one I just love.
Drew, a marine watched his love walked out of his life on the day he was deployed. He was left shattered and broken. After he came back home, he was not the same man. Broken, shattered, alone and full of nightmares from Afghanistan's war. He is not sure if he can find his place in world and just simply go back to his old life. His old self. Until one day when he meets Cole, a girl that might help him mend his broker heart and simply move on from his past love and from the nightmares that still haunts him.
Sara created such an amazing story here. In all her books she is touching your heart and leaves you with so many emotions that you can barely stop crying, stop smiling.
I loved this book. And you may try to read it as standalone, but I highly recommend the whole series. Is that good.
I was all in with this book until the last couple chapters. I was seriously in love with the characters but the ending? Not so much. It was definitely original but I had to read through the end chapters twice to even get a grip on what the author meant to convey. I feel like I’m the one messed up in the head now. LOL I’m really at a loss as to how to even write a review.
This was the first book I read from this author so maybe I should go read the other book in the series since this is the final book in the series.
This is the third and worst book in the trilogy. I kept waiting for it to get better, but that never happened. Then to find out that it was all a dream.... What a waste of time. Sara Shirley should have stopped at her second book.

I was blown away by this book/series. I "purchased" four books (Frozen Barriers, Hidden Barriers, Burning Barriers, and Broken Barriers). The books were all for free so I thought why not. I didn’t anticipate a great read as lately it seems a lot of the "free" reads are smut filled, thrown together and poorly written books. However I have found some good authors by the "free" book.
Boy, I was in for a surprise!!! I wasn't anticipating being blown away with this refreshing read. Each book is a well written and complete story with no cliffhanger – each book is a standalone. It is told from alternating POVs. In my opinion, this made the story so much more complete seeing it from both sides. You get to see and feel what each one is thinking in the same situations. The words seemed to flow effortlessly and it was so easy to feel the emotion of these two people coming off the pages. The characters and scenes are descriptive enough that you feel you are there experiencing it right along with them. The erotica was just the right amount without being over the top. It is not a smut filled romance - it has just the right amount mixed in to compliment the story.
There are plenty of heartbreaking and dark moments with a mix of happiness and fun. Each book plays with your different emotions that will make you angry, laugh, smile, and cry. The way that she wrote each story keeps you connected and not wanting to put the book down. When you get done, you are eager to start the next one.
If you are looking for a great read with the perfect amount of sex mixed in, then you need to read the Barriers series books.
Marine Drew Daley watched his one true love, Courtney Page, walk out of his life forever the day he was deployed. Her engagement to another man shattered him, leaving him questioning why he allowed feelings to get involved in their "friends with benefits" arrangement.
When he returns from serving in Afghanistan, he is no longer the same man he once was. Suffering from a form of PTSD, Drew has difficulty reverting to his previous life. To figure out his next plan, he moves into his parents' lake house.
It's then that Drew is introduced to a local girl named Cole, who just happens to own the bakery downtown. After finding a basket of goodies on the front porch, is he willing to cut his ties with Courtney to pursue a relationship? Is Cole the one who can mend his broken heart?
Broken Barriers is a wonderfully written novel about the realities of returning home from deployment and starting over. It is about the struggles of finding the love you were meant to have and holding on to that person no matter what.
I cannot say how much I love The Barriers Series by Sara Shirley! In Broken Barriers, Sara keeps her writing style the same by infusing well-developed primary characters with great supportive secondary characters. Readers will fall in love with Everett and Marty. For those who are fans of the series, there are cameos from the other books, too. Even though this is the last installment in the series, I can't wait to see what Sara has lined up next.

**Disclaimer: I received a copy of these four books from HEA Bookshelf in exchange for a fair and honest review.**
Drew and Courtney were hot and heavy until Drew left for the Marine’s. Neither told the other how they really felt and were left questioning their feelings. Courtney moved on, Drew didn’t. Their chance get together sparks hidden feelings and emotions. Who will win, the heart or mind? Is the broken man enough for the beautiful and talented baker? Wow, this book was incredible. It was slightly a slow start but wasn’t enough to take away on the rating. The author did a phenomenal job writing this book. It’s a mixture of pain, heartbreak, happiness, and an incredible amount of love. Drew is a broken man when this book starts and understandably so. I loved how this author didn’t make this book all sappy from the start with one “hurdle” for the characters to get over before they get to their happily ever after. There are demons and darkness throughout this book mixed with happiness. It grabs you and keeps you reading. She did a great job describing everything in the book that makes it so easy to picture the scenes. The last few chapters of the book were shocking to say the least. I won’t write anything that gives away the ending but what an INCREDIBLE job. I don’t think I can praise the story enough. You should just go grab yourself a copy now. It’s amazing!
I received an ARC copy of Broken Barriers for the blog tour I am hosting. One word comes to mind when I think of the Author - Talent. Sara is becoming one of my favorite Authors stealing our hearts one book at a time.
Broken Barriers is book 4 in the Barriers series. This book was close on becoming my favorite one. We met Drew in book two and if he did start to capture your heart in that one he sure as hell will in this one. Drew had to leave the love of his life behind when he got his papers to go serve his country aboard. When he returns he is not the same Drew that left - broken.
But as all good love stories grow the hero first has to be broken down before his savoir can save him. And here we find it in Cole. A sweet girl that can save him from his horrors.
Sara gave us the perfect end to this series with Broken Barriers and one can't help to feel sad that is series has come to an end. This is an amazing read and you don't have to read the others to know whats going on in this one. Its a heart warming story and will have you go "AHHHHH" in the end.
I loved every piece of this book. It was outstanding, amazing, and definitely going into my reread pile for the future. I stumbled across this author a while back with book two in this series and was completely blown away. And once again, this author gave me a beautiful romance.
This book was really good and while it does have a storyline we've seen before, the twists & turns make it has it own unique flair. When I dived into this book, I could not put it down until I was done. Full of emotions, love, steam, and the feels, this second chance romance will pull at your heart.
This is Drew and Cole's story. Drew once had it all but life tore them apart. Now, Drew has faced war and is broken. In walks Cole, a woman who may just heal his broken heart and soul. One second chance at love is all they both need. One chance at a real happy ending may just help heal him. No one ever said it was easy and sometimes you have to completely break to be put back together.
I've been waiting for this book for what seems like forever. I was shocked when Drew joined the Marines and I needed to know what would happen to him during his service and how it would affect his future. I was shocked and saddened by what he found when he returned home but I really enjoyed his journey to find himself and his place in the world again. His struggle wasn't resolved quickly. It was gradual. I loved the lake setting and the supporting characters: Cole, Everett, Morgan, Marty, Cocoa and my old favorites Josh and Sam. I love when books lead me down a path and then shake things up. But I wasn't expecting the turn of events in this book and at first was very disappointed. Despite that I enjoyed the end of the book but I can't help wondering what would have happened without it.
Drew has returned from serving in the Marines. Before his deployment he never let's Courtney know his true feelings for her. This decision has caused Drew so much heartache and regret. Now he is back and Courtney has married while he was gone. His head and heart are all torn up , he does not know how to move on in his life. Along comes Cole who befriends Drew , will she be the one to help him get his act together? Loved Drew's story. The ending left me speechless! I had to go back and re-read it. I thought my mind was playing tricks on me!
Absolutely perfect story with the biggest surprise ending
This is by far my favorite book of this series! This book is about Drew, Sam's younger brother. He been in love the Courtney since he set eyes on her in his sister's house. But after deciding that he needed to pursue his career as a Marine, he left her behind with out telling her that he loved her before he left for deployment. This book takes you through his journey of healing from his tour & finding love again. This book will have your jaw dropping at the end. I loved this book!
A Broken hero that returns and tries to get his life together.
I liked the characters in this book. They ranged from alpha males to spunky females. Friends and family cared about each other. Ms. Shirley did a great job of just letting you know enough but kept you wondering about somethings in the past. I will tell you that I did not see the twist coming at the end.
A fantastic end to the series! I loved Drew & Cole's story! The side characters, Everett & Marty, were hard not to love as well! Looking forward to what is next up in 2016 from Ms. Shirley!
This ending has Dallas stamped all over it. Remember when Bobby Ewing was killed and the resurrected the following season because his death was just a dream? This story went the same route and to me that just sucked. What was the purpose of reading the book if the entire story was just a dream?
Since it was a dream, the story was told in the H's pov. When the H was deployed to Afghanistan, he left a letter with the h declaring his love. The h was engaged to another man. The two were just friends with benes but he fell for his friend. The dream featured a number of his friends and acquaintances and at times it got confusing as to who these people were. I could not connect with the h since she really was not in the story much except for appearances in his dreams. She was a different woman altogether in his dreams and went by another name and she had no pov. The story began with the H leaving the h and it ended with the H waking up with the h. We are told that the h is his wife and they had been married for a couple of years. I have no clue as to what went on when the H returned or how he and the h finally got together.
I felt like a huge piece of the story was missing with what happened with the H and h when he returned from Afghanistan since it was interrupted by a really long dream.
I would not recommend.
