I have long admired the husband/wife writing team of Hannah Alexander and I am glad to reacquaint myself with them in this medical drama setting.
Joy is a strong woman with some flaws that get her sidetracked in her career. Still lamenting the breakup with Zack, a fellow doctor, she has her world come crashing down by standing up for herself. She got swayed in her new position in a big town clinic, when she really longs for her small town roots.
The plot is complex with family dynamics and interesting facts about the medical field. It deals with redemption, forgiveness and looking past hurts to the origin of actions and motives.
I am looking forward to reading the next in this series.

I won this book from Firstreads. This is my honest review.

When a child dies, families either draw together or suffer the loss of their marriage and closeness to their other children too. Suffering comes in many forms in this story, but communication makes a huge difference in healing. Dr Joy, and her fiancé, Dr Zack, grew up together in a small town, planning on opening a family practice together. As they got through medical school they also fell in love and got engaged. But when a suave millionaire convinced Joy to work in his pain clinic, problems arose everywhere.

At the clinic, Joy tries to help everyone, but her new boss is caught up in making more money, to the detriment of his marriage and his remaining 15 year old daughter, Tressa. Joy could see that this family was suffering from the death of their son, when they could not accept this as their main problem. Eventually, circumstances sent her back to her hometown, with a stowaway. Tressa was so unhappy with her parents, that she wanted to stay with Joy and her mom , Molly. Molly takes in strays of all kinds including a family of baby raccoons. But Tressa has bigger problems with fainting spells, that may threaten her life too.

Great story of spiritual, emotional and physical healing. Acceptance and finding Bible believing people who follow God's Word rather than human gossip, becomes important in healing too. Can Joy and Zack find out what is wrong with Tressa before her parents loose their only remaining child? Molly and her animals become a basis for bigger things in this story of communication, healing, true acceptance, within a story of real love.

I really enjoyed reading Hallowed Halls. It was a very quick read for me, flowing smoothly through an interesting storyline.

My very favorite parts of the book revolved around Dr. Joy Gilbert and Dr. Zach Tyler. There was a lot of good romantic tension between these two doctors, who used to be engaged. Both were hurting from the breakup that occurred nearly a year earlier, but Joy carried around a few extra scars from that time since she never understood what made Zach break things off. There is also a puzzling medical situation for these doctors to solve together that is interesting to read about.

I was very concerned about Joy’s situation with her former employer. This man was used to controlling others, had a lot of anger in him, and felt that he and Joy should be a couple. This added some good tension to the story as well. I was a little surprised by how things ended up working out with him.

Hallowed Halls has many interesting characters in it and does a great job of illustrating what can happen when people are judgmental toward others, rather than seeing that person as a child of God. This point was made many times in the story, in various ways and is an important truth for all of us to remember. I am excited to see that this book looks to be the beginning of a series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, which I have given.

I almost gave this book 4 Stars, but there were some sloppy editing details (like a character's name changed from one page to the next without an explanation) in the kindle version so I'm giving 3 Stars.

The story itself was so good, and I literally stayed up almost all night just to finish. As a former nurse, the medical details were so interesting to read. As a woman, I liked the reality of the romance aspect. The different mother-daughter relationships also really hit home. I look forward to reading more in this series!

A good story that kept me engaged after a confusing start. I get a little frustrated when an author introduces too many characters at the beginning of a story. Nearly 20 names leapt out at me in the first few pages, and while most of them continued on through the story, several at the beginning could have been designated by their position rather than their name, which would have reduced the confusion. I finally grabbed a notepad and made a list of all the characters and their relationships, which helped me get a handle on the story.

I did enjoy the storyline - a young doctor gets fired for refusing the sexual advances of her boss. She returns to her hometown and encounters several difficult situations - she will be applying for a job with her former fiance, after a devastating breakup. Her mother is having health problems, and the teenage daughter of her boss has run away from home, stowing away in the back of the doctor's car.

This is Christian fiction, and the characters grapple with matters of faith and how it applies to the various situations in which they find themselves - single parenting, the loss of a child to death, divorce, etc. I appreciated the fact that there were no easy pat answers, but only turning to God in faith.

Medicine, Mystery, and Romance

This is the first time I have read a book by Hannah Alexander. I am very impressed and enjoyed this book very much. It is a novel with a medical theme and the mystery of an unknown illness, plus a romance, too! There is so much to love about this book!

Joy Gilbert is the main character. She left her hometown after a broken engagement to Zach Travis. Weston Cline is a wealthy, divorced man who owns the clinic where Joy takes a job when she relocates. Weston wants more than a business relationship with Joy. However, after at first being infatuated with Weston, Joy realizes he is a demanding and controlling man who is not capable of truly loving anyone. He can't even relate to his own daughter, Tressa. When Joy enters Weston's life, Tressa is drawn to her and turns to her as a friend. Joy ends up being fired by Weston and returns home after her former fiance, Zach, calls to tell her that her mother, Molly, is not well and needs her. Tressa decides she needs to get away from her stressful circumstances, so hides in Joy's car and travels to Joy's hometown with her. This unexpected turn of events will lead Joy back to Zach as they work together to discover the cause of Tressa's sudden medical condition.

Molly is a unique character, too. She loves animals and is outspoken, but finds herself in a financial bind. She adds much interest to the story. Just as Molly likes to help stray animals, Joy is always concerned with those less fortunate as she practices medicine. She wants to help those who struggle with emotional issues, while working through her own troubles. As the story unfolds, Joy once again begins a professional relationship with Zach. Will the two redevelop their personal relationship, too? What is the cause of Tressa's illness? Can Zach and Joy discover what is wrong with Tressa? There is so much trauma and hurt in the past lives of all of the characters in this book. The reader is quickly drawn to the main characters, and it is very easy to care about them. That's what I look for in a good book, and this is a wonderful book! It is hard to put down.

The theme running throughout the novel is one of healing. As the characters learn to lean on one another, they also learn to turn to God for the support and acceptance they need. I highly recommend this book! It was a wonderful read!

Phew, where to start? Lot of problems with this one.
First, I hated that everyone called everyone by their first names. Especially the 15 yr old girl calling old ladies, her parents, etc by first name. Completely unrealistic.
Also, medically... ack! We don't ONLY look for Brugada syndrome if you have Asian ancestry. We always look for Brugada. And, not a clear portrayal as there were mostly children in this family dying from this, not adult men per usual...They could have picked a different malady... Doesn't mention them working her up for anything not cardiac, like a brain tumor? If you're going to attempt to write about medicine, maybe have a physician proofread it?
Also, if I had a patient come in with chest pain and then the troponins were negative and the EKG and repeat EKG negative, I would never be suggesting they stay the night for an Echo in the morning. Follow-up outpatient, ma'am. That's standard of care and good management...
And, Dr. Beautiful suggesting to the patient's father that the patient's death would be on his hands if he transferred her? Not ethical, not done. If she were that stupid she would not have made it to or through med school.
And, the patient's father in the end deciding he wants his daughter to not see the specialists but stay in te rural hospital? No one does that.
AND, the elderly lady keeping her daughter's parentage a secret all these years and then deciding to admit it was rape to a 15 yr old girl? What? Why?
AND, have you ever staying in a house with 12 cats? So nasty disgusting.
Will not read another by this author.

I am surprised at all the positive reviews for this book. I have loved the other books I’ve read by this author, but was very disappointed in this one. The character development was disjointed and, at times, unbelievable (for example, an overweight woman with shortness of breath who single-handedly added a second story to her home). I never felt like I truly knew any of the characters - they all seemed to have split personalities vacillating back and forth for no apparent reason. There were numerous grammatical errors as well as errors in the story line (the raccoons which were locked in the shed scampered out from under the living room sofa just minutes later). This book really needed better editing.

I stayed up way too late finishing this book and now I’m a bit sad. I’m not sure I can find another book quite this good to read tomorrow. What a wonderful story. Of broken relationships, of manipulation, of honesty and families finding their way. I would read this book again in a heartbeat which is not something I often say.

Will write a better review tomorrow. It’s nearly 1 AM now.

Oh, but just so you know, this was lovely Christian fiction. Truly lovely.

Whew, what a whirlwind! I loved this book. I didn't like the high mined boss treatment of Joy, but God! How He can break chained and set us free. Tessa what a beautiful spirit of love in the face of stress and physical problems. I loved the ending and so will you!!

I have now read 4 of the books authored by this writing team. I have loved each one. Zach and Joy’s story is heartbreaking but ends up being heartwarming and they are heroes to the family whose lives they potentially saved. I’m anxious to see where this series is headed.

I’m thankful for a review copy that introduced me to Hannah Alexander and her fun, heartfelt story. I instantly connected with Joy, the main character and how she is navigating a life she didn't expect to be living. Her whole world was turned upside-down when fiancé Dr. Zackary Travis broke their engagement for no apparent reason.

Joy then takes a job out of state to get away from Zack and give her a break from her mother, Molly. Things were going well at her new job until she decided to take a few probono clients at the pain clinic. It was something they had discussed before she accepted the position. Why was there a problem? The final straw for her boss was the fact she wouldn't give into any of his sexual advances. She was serious about her medical career, wanted nothing to do with anything else! Joy’s boss fires her when she refuses him one more time! He blames it on the probono work.

More surprises unfold for Joy when she arrives at her mom’s house unannounced. Tressa – daughter of her x-boss pops out from behind the driver’s seat! Oh, wow, her xboss will blow a gasket about this development. She didn't look forward to making the call telling him about his daughter.

Joy's mother Molly works part time at the hospital says there’s an opening there but she’ll have to talk to her x-fiancé Zack to get more information. Joy needs a job fast. She’ll talk to Zack to secure employment. No worries.

To everyone’s great surprise Tressa’s parents agree to let her stay the summer with Joy to give them time to work things out. Joy and Molly are excited about their summer until Tressa becomes sick. They start running tests, Joy seeks Zack’s help in discovering what’s going on with Tressa!

That’s when the fun begins! Zack and Joy find time to talk through their past hurts and see that they might have a hope for their future. Each of them struggles with their faith, God’s plan for their lives and the church.

Zack validates Joy, “You took a verbal beating when you left your old church…There are always tares among the wheat in this world. Don’t let the tares take over the church!...I know it’s hard, but don’t let the hypocrites steal the faith you have in God.”

I liked how this author naturally wove in the spiritual theme throughout this story! I liked how this author dealt with forgiveness of ourselves, how we extend it to others and the church. Unconditional love is hard to receive and give away. The only one that can give this kind of love to us is God!

This was a fun read with feisty characters I enjoyed. There are some surprises for readers too. I’m going to check out more books by this author. This is an enjoyable read and would make a good book club pick.

The writing team known as Hannah Alexander is well-known for their gripping romantic suspense like in their Hideaway series books. In Hallowed Halls, the suspense comes in the form of a medical mystery and the romance reunites Joy Gilbert with her former fiancé, Zack Travis. This is also a story that delves into how parents can fall apart when they lose a child.
Joy and Zack became friends when, as fellow med students, they were partnered for an anatomy class lab. As their friendship deepened, they realized they were in love and made plans to marry. Somewhere along the line, things fell apart. Joy was chosen to be part of a very secretive research team and while on that team, she met Weston Cline. Cline offers her a chance to work in the brand new pain clinic he is in the process of building. He then goes behind her back to do everything he can to undermine her relationship with Zack, including leading Zack to believe that he is involved with Joy as well. Zack breaks the engagement, leaving Joy wide open to Cline’s manipulations.
Eight months later, Joy realizes that Cline is using her beauty to draw customers and he’s expecting more from her than she is prepared to give. He’s also interfering with how she does her job, which she won’t stand for. As far as she can see, the only part of their relationship that she is willing to keep is her friendship with Cline’s 15-year-old daughter, Tressa. When a crisis with Joy’s mother comes up and she is called home, Cline fires Joy believing she will do whatever she can to save her job. Instead, she leaves hoping to repair the damage to her relationship with her mother. What she doesn’t know is, Tressa is hiding in her backseat.
Cline and his wife, Sylvia, divorced four years earlier when their oldest son, Keegan died. Since then, both have been largely ignoring their sole remaining child in favor of living lives of excess. Sylvia brings home men she meets in bars. Weston throws his power around and largely ignores Tressa’s existence. When Sylvia’s latest “boyfriend” starts making overtures toward Tressa, she’s spooked enough to climb into Joy’s car.
Once in Juliet, Missouri, questions begin to arise. Some are answered by the end of the book but some are not. Will Joy find work she enjoys? Will Tressa’s parents drag her back home? Will Joy and Zack be able to work together? Will Cline realize Joy isn’t his to command? The suspense comes when Tressa contracts a mysterious ailment that causes her to faint when she eats certain things. What’s wrong? Can it be fixed before the Cline’s lose yet another child?
I, for one, look forward to the next book in this series! I’m hoping that some of the questions that were left hanging in this book are answered in future books. I loved the menagerie of animals living with Joy’s mother, Molly and I loved Tressa’s character. For the hardships she’s endured, she seems pretty well adjusted and strong. I also enjoyed Molly’s character although I can see why she frustrates Joy! If you have read Hannah Alexander before, this book is a bit of a departure from their usual danger-filled suspense but it was well worth the read. If you have not enjoyed a Hannah Alexander book before, you’re in for a treat with this one!

What a delight to see a new medical suspense novel from Hannah Alexander! Hallowed Halls is the kind of quality writing that I would anticipate from her; she is an expert in the Christian suspense - medical genre.
Dr. Joy Gilbert left her hometown when her fiancé, Dr. Zack Travis called off their engagement, going to work for a prestigious pain management clinic. Weston Cline, the owner of the clinic, did not hide that he wanted Joy to be his lady friend. Joy is a delightful woman who became a first-ever best friend to Tressa, the daughter of the clinic’s owner.
Dr. Zack contacted Joy after her mother, Molly, had been seen at the emergency room where he was the director. He urged her to come home to see Molly and help her through her medical testing and other needs. When Joy headed home, Tressa was hiding in the back of her SUV. While at Molly’s, Tressa has a mysterious medical crisis that threatens her life.
Tressa, Molly, Joy and Zack are excellently characterized, and folks that I would enjoy knowing. I’m not sure if I have one favorite person, as each have great qualities. Molly is intelligent and an animal lover. Joy is intelligent, a top-notch researcher, and loving daughter and friend. Tressa is young, optimistic, and as close as family to Joy and Molly. Zack is a man of faith who responds to life’s challenges with prayer and faith and with the training he has as a doctor and researcher.
This book is at times exciting and at times very intense through the medical crises. Hannah Alexander’s gift for suspenseful writing is integral in this novel in which lives are saved through correct diagnosis, treatment and research, and where faith and relationships are built – or rebuilt. Hannah Alexander is a fixture on my ‘TBR’ list! The Christian faith that is the basis of all of her writings shines through and does not disappoint – and thank you for the reminder of the vineyard!
I highly recommend this novel to adults of any age and young adults who appreciate well-written Christian medical suspense. It is well worth the read, especially as it models how we can respond to crises with faith in the Lord rather than our own feeble understanding.
I received a copy of this book through the “For Readers Only” group at The Book Club Network, in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to Hannah Alexander, Christian Writer’s Guild Publishing, and The Book Club Network for this novel! All opinions are my own, and no monetary compensation was received for this review.

This is a great story about broken relationships and the healing that can come if one is willing. Dr. Joy Gilbert works with/for Weston Cline, a wealthy, charming, handsome, and totally messed up man. Joy is a caring soul whose heart goes out to everyone she sees. The only reason she continues to see Weston outside of work hours after she’s already decided there is no chance of a romantic relationship between them, is because she totally loves his daughter, Tressa. The sweet teenage girl so needs the unconditional love that Joy lavishes on her, and Joy needs the wonderful friendship that Tressa provides.

Tressa’s parents, Weston and Sylvia, divorced after their lives were shattered by the loss of their son. While they’re in the pits of their own despair, which shows up in two very different ways, Tressa is forgotten about. Joy will not abandon this beautiful girl that God has placed in her life.

When bad turns to worse, Joy loses her job, and heads back home to help her ailing mother. Tressa ends up staying the summer with Joy and Molly. She becomes such a part of their little family as each person is healing from broken relationships of one kind or another.

This is a beautiful novel about love. Everybody craves to be loved. When contemplating someone elses relationship, the song Just As I Am enters Joy’s mind. And that is one of the themes to this book. To love someone just as they are. And the belief and understanding that God loves them for who they are is a healing balm.

Although I wish there was more of a personal prayer and healing time with some of the characters and the Lord, I think this is one amazing book. There is romance, and mystery that I have not expelled on in my review, but it is there. And the message is one we all can relate to. It starts out hard and frustrating seeing all the pain surrounding them, but it is such a beautiful story in the end. I highly recommend it.

Dr Joy Gilbert is getting to the end of her patience with her new boss, Weston Cline. Not only has her role as a “pain management specialist” turned into legal drug pusher, but he’s reluctant to let her take pro bono cases, and seems to expect more from their relationship than employer/employee. The only positive is her relationship with Tressa, his daughter, who is struggling with her parental relationships after their divorce.

An unexpected telephone call takes her back to her home town, where her mother has been admitted to hospital, and is under the care of Dr Zachary Travis, Joy’s ex-fiance. She arrives to find more than she bargained for—she has a stowaway. Tressa. Tressa, who is suddenly having fainting spells for no apparent reason.

Hallowed Halls is a combination of a medical thriller, and second-chance romance. There’s history between Joy and Zack, and there’s a story as to why she left her home town to work for Weston. There was so much unspoken backstory that I wondered at times if this was actually the second book in the series, but it’s not. While the medical aspect is central to the story, it’s well-written and not so detailed that I was grossed out (a distinct advantage. I had to skip pages in one novel recently, because the medical detail was too, well, detailed).

One thing I did keep getting hung up was Weston, who is a complete slimebag. Weston isn’t a common name, and the only Weston I’ve ever known was the complete antithesis of this fictional Weston, and it took me a while to get into the story for that reason. However, this improved once Joy got home and the focus of the story was more on Joy, her mother, Tressa … and Zack.

Overall, I really enjoyed Hallowed Halls. It was a good plot (especially the medical bits), and the characters were fascinating. Recommended.

When I started this book, I thought it would be a medical thriller involving missing controlled drugs. I was surprised to discover that this was not the premise of the book at all. I soon learned that the novel addressed the healing of broken relationships more than medical healing.

When Dr Joy Gilbert loses her prestigious job at a pain center located in the midst of a thriving city, she returns to her small home town of Juliet. There, she is forced into a professional liaison with the fiancé who broke off her engagement for a reason still not revealed to her. She also finds her mother, with whom Joy’s relationship has been somewhat tenuous for several years, struggling with ill health and a shaky financial situation.

The former employer, Weston, who fired Joy continues to be a thorn in her side, especially since his daughter has decided to stow away in Joy’s car and accompany her to Juliet. Tressa and Joy have grown close, a friendship fueled by Tressa’s loneliness after her parents’ divorce. When Tressa begins showing symptoms of a mysterious medical condition that may have also claimed her brother’s life years before, Joy must deal with Weston.

The intertwining of the lives of all the characters is an intricate study in family dynamics. I especially enjoyed Joy’s mom’s affinity for stray animals and her struggle to lose weight. Tressa’s illness proved to be a mystery that required an astute progression of medical fact finding.

I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy well-developed characters and like to delve into the dynamics of human relationships within the framework of a well-developed novel plot.

Hallowed Halls by Hannah Alexander is a wonderful read. My father was in the hospital (I was about half way through this book) and he wanted to read it. He told me a few days later that this is one of the best books he has read. In fact, he wants my copy to loan to others at church. My dad is 88 yrs old retired CSM from the army. Yes, he loves Inspirational Romance & Suspense. Yes, I'm giving him my book.

I highly recommend this book. I've read several of Hannah Alexander's books and they have all been great.

When Dr. Joy Gilbert is fired from her job the same day that her mother is taken to the ER and admitted, she arrives in town only to discover her ex-boss's daughter was stowed away in her back seat. Tressa refuses to return to the city to her divorced parents. Zack is still working in the ER only now he's the boss. Zack is her former boyfriend and the sparks still are there when Joy reaches the ER to check on her mother. Tressa and Molly (Joy's mother) have a wonderful friendship and they are there for each other when other problems arrive. Then Joy is hired to work in the ER under Zack.

There are relationships to mend, forgiveness and understanding. As faith grows, misunderstandings are put into place, characters soon become friends and I didn't want to finish it - wanted it to go on a few more chapters. Loved this book. Another winner by Hannah Alexander.

I received this book through www.bookfun.org and the author to read and to leave reviews of my honest opinion. I even gave you my Dad's honest opinion. Will have to take my other books by Hannah to him to read. Definitely a 5 star book.

Hallowed Halls by the husband/wife team, Hannah Alexander, is a very interesting book that looks into relationships. Not only that, but it has a very intriguing medical mystery as well. I was drawn into this story and all the dynamics that it involved. The main character Dr. Joy Gilbert is still broken hearted from her break up with her fiancé Zack, who is a fellow doctor. With problems at home with her mom, Molly, Joy takes a job in the city much farther away than the country home she is used too. It has been 9 months, and things are still not working out for Joy. Being pursued by her divorced employer and her overloaded work schedule, Joy needs to go home and face her Mother’s mounting debt and health problems and Zack. Not only that, but she has a stowaway, Tressa, who is the very wealthy and powerful divorced employer’s daughter. Tressa is dealing with some issues of her own, from both her parents. Not only that, but there is something more sinister and dangerous happening to Tressa. This story is full of secrets that each individual is keeping and needs to come to light. I really liked how the author showed that the decisions and mistakes people make, not only affect the person making them, but everyone as a whole. I also enjoyed how all the characters related and responded to each other, especially Joy and Molly’s relationship. There is definitely some healing and forgiveness that needs to take place for all the characters. This is my first read by Hannah Alexander and with the solid storytelling found in this book it will not be my last. I received this book from The Book Club Network, (TBCN) and the opinions are my own.

Hallowed Halls by Hannah Alexander (Christy Award Winning Author)

What an encouraging and real to life book!! This book brings so many real life memories to me. I know if you are looking for a book to read that encompasses life troubles but brings you true to life answers and a closer walk with God, this one can do that!!
Joy, Tressa and Molly have built such a relationship through trials that bring with it such a family of love. Walking through the gardens and small town will in many ways affect your sight into the growth you will find in each of the characters.
Bad decisions made by Zach break Joy’s dreams. Weston, a self-made, independent boss brings Joy to the realization it is time to return home. Having been a stranger at home before she has left, Joy embraces the knowledge of her Lord to walk her through. All the while rebuilding her career and juggling the deep rooted hurts.
Having been independent for so long, Joy has only her mom. Molly having her own ailments must learn to allow growth and forgiveness towards her daughter and self.
Tressa coming to Juliet becomes a saving grace. Learning the value she is, as a person after the death of her brother and her parents divorce comes through love and respect.
Having been thrown together in work how can the turmoil be resolved. With Tressa facing sure death, can Zach and Joy find the answers needed to save her?
This book has it all. A clean book with romance, mystery and life lessons with God. Hannah uses “normal” everyday ‘hurt’ people to give us a look at lives on a journey towards completeness.
It is truly a favorite of mine.

Joy Gilbert is a doctor from a small town, who cares to much about everyone around her. Her ex-fiance Zach, is a doctor at the hospital in the town where Joy is from, who hasn't stopped caring for Joy since she left, and to top it all off Weston Cline, Joy's new employer, has made it clear to those around her that he is expecting more in their relationship than what is normal between employer and employee.
As Weston's background becomes more clear to Joy, she pulls back from any relationship with him, but his teenage daughter has become a close friend of Joy's, so she continues to see the daughter and offer what friendship she can. When Joy get some devastating news and heads home to her mother, more devastation is piled on top. Joy is determined to make the best of what she can of the relationship between herself and her mother, but Molly is not the easiest person to get along with. As they learn to love and appreciate each other for what they are, Joy's relationship with Zach is brought again to the front, and they are slowly working toward forgiveness. Will forgiveness be easy to find, or will they continue to battle it out? As the health of Joy's young friend Tressa is suddenly thrust to the forefront, can an entire family learn to move past the embers of past flames and move forward to new relationships?

This was a great read!! I read through the entire book in about three hours and enjoyed the entire thing! I fell in love with a couple of the characters and found myself giggling at some of the antics that went on between the pages. Great clean read!
