Kalani Willis suffered a tragedy at the age of sixteen when her mother was murdered by Stefan, who was her stepfather. One day, something traumatic happened to Kalani that was beyond her control. She turned to food and depression as a coping mechanism, which also made her gain a lot of weight.
Everyday she’d hear the insults thrown at her, but eventually learned that even though the tongue was a mighty sword, hateful words could only make her stronger.
Kilo Redmond was the man of every woman’s dream, yet he refused to settle down or stay monogamous. He had many women and still couldn’t figure out why none of them captivated him. When his path crosses with Kalani, sparks don’t fly and he tried to take her life a couple of times. However, as the saying goes, opposites attract but will those two build a connection together or does he finally take her life in exchange for being reckless.
Take a ride with Kalani and find out what it takes to be an independent woman and how to handle
I’m torn on this one! On one hand, I loved the story’s messiness and multiple POVs — it kept me hooked and I finished it in one sitting. But the male characters? Hard pass. There’s a thin line between unhinged and straight-up toxic, and Kilo crossed it too many times for me, even with some glimpses of growth.
I also struggled with how Kalani was written. I get being insecure, especially as a plus-size woman, but seeing her so meek and feeling unworthy of love was painful — made worse by the MMC’s backhanded comments like ‘pretty for a big girl’ or ‘I expected her to be sloppy.’ THIS is her love interest?!
Still, for all the things I disliked, I can’t lie — it was entertaining. I really hope there’s a part 2 where Kalani steps away from Kilo, works on herself, and makes him realize how much of a prize she is.
This was disappointing to say the least. The story was all over the place. I find it weird that one moment kalani has a fiery personality then the next minute she seems as if she has a mental deficiency and there’s no explanation. Also how on earth do you go from her being attacked and blacking out to just fast forwarding 4 years later with a child with no mention or alluding of the father? Then all of a sudden towards the end of the book they start mentioning the step father? Yea the story is all over the place.
This book was a complete disappointment. The writing was corny, the language overly vulgar, and the storyline downright toxic. The male lead was incredibly disrespectful, constantly degrading the female protagonist and even pulling weapons on her. It was disturbing, not romantic or entertaining. I couldn’t bring myself to finish it. While I’ve enjoyed other works by this author, this one missed the mark completely. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.
The ending has a lot going on, but I’m praying for a good outcome. Ain’t no way Ryan was with that girl. He headed to the address to meet Kilo. Kilo gotta make it. They have to find miracle and Kalani. I need to know what’s up with Jaheim. Who kidnapped Kalani years ago and who’s her baby daddy? Hazel gotta make it also!
The title of this review should have been the name of this book. I promise the characters are crazy asf. I laughed so much but also can relate to kalani. So I understand why her insecurity would be in a relationship. However, I wouldn't be doing all that fighting for a man.IJS I can't wait to read the next book.
Great start to the series! I haven't read Tina J books in a while, but her pen game is still on point! I'm enjoying the plot as its thick! Kalani has been through so much, but I know that Kilo is the one for her. If only Ryan could get his act together, where Hazel is concern, but she need to work on herself as well!
Nooo if they did a background check on kalani and hazel then why didn’t that step daddy show up I knew we were getting another one too many unanswered questions see you soon I can’t wait to see what happens next
Another great story under your belt!! Great from beginning to end but I’m stuck on one part where she got kidnapped!? You left me hanging there and then boom she have a kid and she grown?? Hope you clear up that part in the next book😏
Tina J you do it to me every time I read one of your books. I am left in shock by the ending and can’t wait to start part 2. I pray Hazel doesn’t die and Kilo and Kalani our ok. I hope we find out who Miracle father is.
Hazel is my new bestie for life ok Tina J you got another hit on your hands yesss diva when part 2 coming out Ka Tanya and them are what worlds needs now in friends I can’t wait to read how Part 2 coming
She messed me up with this one. I have so many questions and theories. And every single time I turn around the change again like bruhhh. It’s like trying to solve a rubik cube! She plays all day! Where’s part 2
Wow I definitely did not see all the events in that cliffhanger happening, but what I can say is it’s about to be some smoke in the city once Kilo recovers. I can’t wait for part 2
I haven’t read a Tina j book in years and decided to give this a try after seeing someone in a book group recommended it. I barely made in to page 20. Writing is very low level reading and story line all over the place . Not for me .
Wow what a read. In this book Love faces many challenges.. The challenge characters challenge themselves to be better people. It’s like Beauty and the Beast in this read. I truly enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next part of this read. Can’t wait.
This was a good read. It had emotions included making you laugh and cry. Kalani has been through so much she deserves a happy ending. Can’t wait for a book2…
Don't get me wrong. I love this Author. I really do but her male characters are starting to become alike. This is a great storyline but Kilo rude , unhinged, and disrespectful ass reminds me of Santana and Ryan reminds of Tae. From the beginning of this book. I could tell Kalani adored her mother at one point until she married that YN Stefan who was a abusive alcoholic. I laughed when Kalani whooped his ass for putting his hands on her but I was highly disturbed and disgusted that Kalani mother pretty much took Stefan side when he disrespect her child. Sadly when Kalani mother finally decided to leave her marriage. Stefan took her life. Luckily Kalani had her father, step-mother to take her in since she was still a teenager. I'm waiting to see how Kalani ended up pregnant because it insinuated that she could've possibly been raped and I'm wondering if it was her Stefan since he haven't been caught and arrested for her mother murder. When she met Kilo crazy and disrespectful ass. I actually thought Kalani would've been automatically turned off. Especially with him damn near trying to kill her and after what she witnessed what her mother went through. You could tell Kilo was attracted to her but he showed it in the most demented way. I don't know what the hell Kalani best friend Hazel saw in Michael. He's a arrogant, lying ass cheater who had absolutely zero respect for her. I was cracking up when Kalani was whooping Michael ass. What I can say is the two best friends. Definitely always have each other back. I thought Ryan was good for Hazel but he got me side eyeing him. Now Hazel should've told him what Michael creep ass did when he came to her office because when Michael told his side. It was a lie but it still had Ryan feeling some type of way towards Hazel.. Women like Carmen and Briana are pitiful to me. I can't knock Kilo because both women knows about each and settle for what he have given him. Carmen is threatened by Kalani and think body shaming her is going to stop something. Carmen see that Kilo is smitten by her and so do Briana goofy ass. Carmen should be tired of getting hands and feet put on her. I'm surprised Kalani or Hazel didn't drag Briana at the park when she called herself confronting Kalani about Kilo. Carmen should've gotten the picture that Kilo don't want her. I'm also trying to figure out how do Briana know Kalani business about Stefan still being out there. Now that Kilo seems to have dropped Carmen, Briana, and every other woman he had on his roster. It seems Carmen is refusing to let go. I wish Kalani would've told somebody she was getting threats. Kilo and Ryan noticed Jaheim seems a little obsessed with Kalani. Kalani little Troy already had to knock Jaheim out for being disrespectful. They should've kept a closer eye on him because Jaheim is moving slimy. The way this ended. Kilo realized Kalani and her daughter Miracle is in trouble and Carmen have snapped but before he can find out the truth. He gets shot. Hazel running that chick off the road behind Ryan wasn't a smart move because she put her own life at risk as well.
