The Ragged Lord

Rate this book
They ran halfway across the desert to escape the Magician. It wasn't far enough.

After narrowly escaping the burning ruin of the ant tower, Richard and Ana flee with their ally the Kabbah to the Empire of Reason. There, they hope to find directions to the demon Eluah, who can protect them from the Magician and his army of nomads.

But the desert won't give up its secrets so easily, and there are mysteries buried in the sands that no man was meant to uncover. Forgotten alchemical experiments, blood rituals and chained demons are waiting for Richard in the wastes, and old enemies have their own plans for his daughter Ana...

Century of Sand 2: The Ragged Lord is an epic dark fantasy in the style of Michael Moorcock and Gene Wolfe where Richard, Ana and the Kabbah will be pushed to the limits of their wits and strength in a battle for survival. The Ragged Lord is a direct sequel to Century of Sand and should not be read out of sequence.

Richard, Ana and the Kabbah struggle further across the desert in search of the demon so they can return its heart.
I really enjoyed this novel, even more than the first one. With every chapter we learn more about this deep and complex world. I loved the Empires of Reason, the mad, power-hungry alchemists. The dark and grubby, quasi-medieval setting just adds another layer of fear and tension into the story.

I love the further development of Richard's past, interwoven beside the main tale. The revelations of what happened with Parkin and the magician were tragic and sad. I really felt for Parkin, and also Richard. I loved the developing character of the Kabbah, and his relationship with Ana.

The revelation about what the demons actually are was unexpected but very cool, and answered a lot of questions. The ending was an emotional kick in the guts. Looking forward to the final book, but wondering how it's all going to tie together. A really polished read, gripping and sometimes edge-of-your-seat.

Century of Sand 2: the Ragged Lord is an epic undertaking, both in terms of what transpires within the novel and in what it is like to read it. This novel follows Richard, Ana and the Kabbah as they flew further north, constantly seeking the demon Eluah and trying desperately to stay out of the Magician's clutches. This is a brilliantly written epic fantasy, brimming with darkness and a slow horror element that kept me turning the pages into the night. The Ragged Lord continues Century of Sand brilliantly - if you loved Ruz's first fantasy, you are guaranteed to love this. If you haven't read Century of Sand, you must definitely should. This is fantasy that reminds me of Joe Abercrombie and Gene Wolfe (But, in some ways I believe, better), with brilliantly created characters and a mysterious world I just want to know more about. Ruz's work is dark, gritty fantasy at its best and most horrific, and definitely one not to be missed! I'm already eager waiting for book 3!

Century of Sand continues in this sparse desert epic of corrupted oases and demon possessed innocents. The sequel is solid and has all the same unique and intense world-building of the first coupled with a strong arc that successfully weaves together plot and character - more than your typical epic fantasy. The big bad isn't a faceless evil plucked from the depths of history but a man of unimaginable power with the righteous fervor of a revolutionary. And the hero isn't your typical young man handed his destiny at birth but a troubled veteran wrestling with his own human frailty.

Strong at the start and even more powerful in the finish, there is something of a slip when we are dragged into the paranoia of the lone inhabitants of the ruthless desert, but Ruz more than makes up for it in the end with a climactic fight and imagery worthy of the primeval terror our modern myths can only try to replicate.
