Book Review: The New Natural Food Garden by Natalie Bogwalker & Chloe Lieberman

Rating: 4 Stars

I recently picked up The New Natural Food Garden by Natalie Bogwalker and Chloe Lieberman, and I have to say, it’s a really solid guide for anyone wanting to grow their own veggies in a way that’s kind to the environment. These authors bring tons of experience from their online gardening school, Growing Wise, and it shows throughout the book. It’s not just a how-to manual; they really dive into the reasons behind each technique, helping you understand why certain methods work better in your specific bioregion.

What I appreciated most was how comprehensive the book is—from starting seeds all the way to harvesting and storing your bounty. They don’t just give you one way to do things either; they break down the pros and cons of different approaches, backed by real-life gardening trials in various climates. This makes it super practical and adaptable no matter where you live.

Oh, and can we talk about the cover? It’s absolutely gorgeous and immediately grabbed my attention. Inside, the photos are just as lovely and really inspire you to get out there and start planting. If you’re someone who loves gardening or know a friend who does, this book would make a fantastic gift. It’s packed with helpful tips that can definitely help you step up your gardening game.

All in all, I’m giving it 4 stars. It’s informative, engaging, and beautifully presented. My only minor gripe is that occasionally some sections felt a bit dense, but honestly, that’s just because there’s so much good info packed in. Definitely recommend it!

This is one of the most comprehensive vegetable gardening books that I’ve read, and I’ve read a ton. It’s so packed with information on tools, pests, types of gardening, preparation and more that I suspect that if I’d read it early in my garden life i might have felt overwhelmed and decided not to try. Reading through this, I was frequently amazed that my gardens have done as well asthenisch have over the years, because I am a far lazier gardener and could never do all of this. These ladies have massive, beautiful, flourishing natural food gardens though, and this book gives you all the information you need to do the same.

The last part of the book is very detailed growing information on the standard variety of herbs and veggies like basil, lettuce, spinach, watermelon, cucumbers and such. I have never seen such detailed advice about every aspect, from soil temperature to pests to spacing to watering from seeding on. I would have liked more herbs and vegetables such as artichokes, oregano, New Zealand spinach, and so many more. It’s very detailed on the ones it has though. There are also full timing charts on what to do with every plant in every month for all different climates.

There are beautiful photos throughout, plus a focus on sustainability that I really appreciated. There are plans for doing various kinds of supports and much more. I am much more of a chaos permaculture gardener than these authors, but I am blown away by the amount of great information.

I read a temporary online copy of this book for review.

I love it! “The New Natural Food Garden” by Natalie Bogwalker and Chloe Lieberman is easily the most insightful gardening book I’ve come across in a long time. Both authors bring impressive depth to the subject, grounded in their studies of agroecology and years of hands‑on experience in a wide range of growing environments. Their knowledge feels lived, and they write with a confidence that comes from real practice.

The strength of the book lies in its balance between method and meaning. It recognises that there is rarely a single answer in gardening, instead the authors outline several practical options and weigh their benefits and drawbacks with refreshing honesty and pragmatism. The tone is clear and deeply encouraging. It feels designed to help you find what works for you while still caring for the wider ecosystem.

The visuals are a real highlight. The photos and illustrations add both beauty and clarity. The writing moves easily from solid technique to small reflections that reveal the joy and patience behind good growing. By the time I finished, I felt energised to rethink my own approach and experiment more intelligently. And slightly scared of the horse manure recently purchased but not yet spread on my plot.... If you add only one gardening book to your shelf this year, make it this one.

Thank you to Storey Publishing, NetGalley, Natalie Bogwalker and Chloe Lieberman for an advance reading copy of this book.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of The New Natural Food Garden.
This is a really interesting and informative book for anyone interested in gardening. It features beautiful photography alongside plenty of detailed guidance to help you design and grow your own garden. I especially appreciated that it doesn’t just focus on how things look, but also explains why certain elements are important in a garden.
The book also explores different gardening methods and clearly outlines their benefits, which makes it both educational and practical. The explanations are straightforward and easy to follow, making it a great resource for beginners.
I’ll definitely be referring back to this as I start my own gardening project.
