This is book four in the These Cursed Origins Series and it is recommended to read the books in order.
Ashton Abbott is an anxiety ridden hot mess most of the time. I can say that because I’m talking about myself. This is kind of therapeutic. I write paranormal romance, dark fantasy, post-apocalyptic paranormal romance, and horror in the near future. I like to think I write on the grittier side of things. Is grittier a word? I guess this is my book so I can do whatever I want. Grittier is officially a word according to this book. Geez I’m bad at this. Ok, about me. I am a Mom to two beautiful hellions. I have a smokin’ hot husband. I love them even though they can have an attitude sometimes. Honestly, it’s karma because so do I. How long does this thing have to be? I enjoy reading and gaming when I have a moment to actually take a breath and chill. Epson salt baths! I play the shit out of some Minecraft. I actually genuinely love hearing from my readers so don’t be shy! I post a ton of memes on my Facebook page and am not above getting into best meme contest so feel free to challenge me. BYYYEEEE!
My soul didn’t just read this—I lived it, bled with it, and flew through fire because of it. If you’ve ever read a book and felt like the character’s rage, trauma, and fight were tangled up with your own—Truth of the Broken did that for me. Ashton Abbott didn’t just write a post-apocalyptic, supernatural survival story. They carved out a raw, aching place where pain meets power, and vengeance becomes a form of prayer. Avery. Oh, sweet stars—Avery is everything. She’s not some sparkly winged savior. She’s fire and scar tissue, love that’s been betrayed too many times, and grief that’s grown teeth. She doesn’t bounce back. She crawls, she breaks, and then she rises, and I loved her more for every damn crack in her armor. This fourth book throws her into a past that doesn’t play fair—just like life. It doesn’t offer clean answers or easy comfort. It’s brutal. But somehow, through the grit and blood and unbearable memories, Avery keeps going. Not because she wants to be a hero, but because giving up isn’t in her bones—even when she wants to. Even when it would be easier. There’s something wild and feral about how Ashton Abbott tells this story. It’s not polished or prim. It’s jagged and real. And the truth that starts to unravel in this book? Yeah, it gutted me. Because it’s not just about Avery uncovering secrets—it’s about choosing who she becomes in the wreckage. And let me tell you, that transformation? Worth every page. This isn’t just fantasy. It’s survival. It's a reckoning. And if you’ve walked through fire of your own, you’ll feel seen in Avery’s scars and fury and quiet strength. She doesn’t just fight back. She becomes the storm. If you haven’t read These Cursed Origins, start from the beginning. Trust me. You need the full weight of the journey to truly feel how far Avery has come—and how far she still might fall. Or fly. I don’t know what Ashton Abbott has planned next, but I’m here for every broken truth, every raw moment, and every wing-beat of vengeance that follows.
Ashton Abbott has officially become one of my favorite authors. I’d already devoured books 1–3 in the These Cursed Origins series, so I grabbed Book 4 the second I saw it.
Now, I’m usually a fast reader—but not with Abbott’s books. I slow down. I savor. The emotional depth, especially around trauma and PTSD, is handled with such care that it demands your full attention. Truth of the Broken picks up with Avery trapped in the past (pre-apocalypse), institutionalized and carrying the impossible weight of saving the world—and finding a way back to Taylor.
This one feels like a slow burn, emotionally heavy and a clear buildup for the chaos we all know is coming in Book 5. It was a bit confusing at times, especially since it’s been a while since I read Books 1–3 and didn’t have Book 3 on hand for a refresher. I struggled a little to piece everything together—but I expect it’ll all click into place soon, and I plan to reread Books 1–4 before the next one drops.
Also, if you’ve read the previous books, you know to take the author’s trigger warnings seriously. They’re there for a reason.
And yes—Book 4 ends on a cliffhanger 🙄🙄🙄 because Ashton is clearly a sadist. But it was worth it. Plus, there’s a sneak peek of Book 5 at the end, which gives me hope we won’t have to wait too long.

2 stars for me. Book four in These Cursed Origins Book series start when we were left off. Avery is back in time to stop apocalypse, being committed and treated in psychiatric hospital no one believe her. Time is running out, will she get her powers back, find Tyler and win against demons?
Don't want to spoil the book,so will write only about my feelings reading this book, which was waiting to something happened ,anything-fight,action,big reveal. There was none to leave me satisfied, so this book was just not for me. Two stars,I like the promise of the book and the cover.
Book four of These Cursed Origins series, Truth of the Broken sees Avery thrown into the past of sorts. Confusion and terror at being where she is. She’s haunted and trying to process the point of what’s going on. And in true Abbott fashion we are left with the chokehold of cliffhanger she so effortlessly creates! On to the next book to find out what will happen in Avery’s world.

Was it real? Is anything true? Avery finds herself struggling with her sense of reality and finds herself more alone than ever. Who can she trust when she’s not sure she can even trust herself?
Ashton knocked it out of the park in book 4 of this series. I was hooked from the first page and am anxiously awaking the next one!
