This is the last children’s picture book I’m reading that I currently have at home from the library, and it might be the last book I complete in 2010. (I’m not going to be able to finish my current novel or my fun Harry Potter movie book, and I might or might not be able to finish my current vegan cookbook.) This is also the fourth [Ruth Heller] book I’ve read within the last day and the first by her that I’ve read in quite a while. I have read and enjoyed many of her books, and I own quite a few of them.
Her parts of speech books are wonderful. The words being featured, pronouns in this case, are printed in eye-catching blue ink, which makes learning so much easier. I would like to read any of the books in this series that I have missed. I just recently learned there were some I’d not yet read. Some relatively advanced teaching for each part of speech is included in this series. The way this material is presented is so much fun. I’d like to see these books in every elementary school classroom or at least available through schools’ libraries, and they’d definitely be an asset to families’ home libraries.
I love Heller’s illustrations. Here there are almost too many favorite for me to list, but I will list some: the candies!!!, the gifts, the dogs, the lion, the flamingos, the peacocks, the duck and her ducklings, Goldilocks and the bears, and the fruit.
Outstanding picture book about pronouns. Published in 1997, it's not recent, but adverbs haven't changed since then. The rhyming text manages to convey a lot of information. Both the meter and the rhymes feel very natural. All the adverbs in the book are blue and appear in a larger font size so that they stand out from the rest of the text. Covers personal pronouns, possessive pronouns, demonstrative pronouns, indefinite pronouns, reflexive pronouns, interrogative pronouns, and relative pronouns. Text relates information on correct usage and grammar rules. Includes a list of pronouns grouped by category in the back of the book.
The illustrations are stunning. Page layouts are superb as well. An excellent resource for children to learn grammar in a fun, non-threatening way. Part of Ruth Heller's World of Language nonfiction picture book series about the various parts of speech. Highly recommend.
This is another in Heller's series of illustrated guides to parts of english speech written for young children. There are about 8 or 9 of these books (one each on nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, interjections, pronounds, collective nouns and more). In each book in the series Heller presents the topic so clearly and so well that everyone, adults and children alike, come away with a solid understanding of the subject. While I did moderately well in english in grade school, junior high and high school, there were various details about some aspects of grammer that I never grasped very well. I wish Heller had written these books back when I was young.
The other astounding and remarkable aspect to this series of books is that Heller also did all of the illustrations herself. I believe that is something of a rarity for an author to create an illustrated book and to do both the text and the illustrations. Heller's command of the art of illustration is as good as her command of the english language.
If you were ever, or perhaps still are, fuzzy about any aspect to parts of english speech, take a look at these books by Heller.
Mine, All Mine: A Book About Pronouns is a book that describes the different kinds of pronouns through using multiple examples. The pronouns on each page stand out in a different color and are written in a larger font so that students can easily identify them. The illustrations in the book are really big and colorful. It appears that the illustrator chose to use many different mediums (colored pencils, painting, and computer generated images). The illustrations clearly demonstrate what is being said in the text. I think this book would be a fabulous read aloud for third grade students. Since there is a lot of information in the book, I would use this as a way to end a unit on pronouns. That way, the students would be familiar with the different types of pronouns and could use this as a review. I think it would also be great for teachers to have this in their classroom so that students could refer to it. In the back of the book, all the types of pronouns are listed a long with many examples for each. This book provides a fun way for students to learn about pronouns and I would recommend it to other teachers.
This is a fun book to read aloud. The illustrations are wonderful and the rhyming narrative helps to disguise the fact that you are learning something. The depictions of the nursery rhymes, fairy tales, and Greek mythology were especially entertaining. I like that the book not only gives details about the different kinds of pronouns, but also explains common errors and shows how to pick the correct one. I doubt that just reading this book once will eliminate all errors in pronoun usage, but it is a help. We enjoyed reading this book together.
This book serves as a great tool to use with younger children and students as they learn about pronouns. This book is colorful and makes learning about the appropriate use of pronouns more exciting for young readers. "Mine, All Mine!: A Book About Pronouns" contains rhymes throughout the story so there are different aspects of the book that relate to language development. Learning about pronouns is important for language development and is a great way to begin a child's education on different parts of speech. The last page of this book contains a list of pronouns, from reflexive to personal, that a child can refer to when they are unsure of what pronoun to use. This book can be used in conjunction with other books by Heller that teach concepts such as prepositions, collective nouns, conjunctions, etc.
This is a great tool to use with younger children who are just learning the concepts of English and how to use pronouns. This makes learning the pronouns less boring and more fun because it is in a catchy rhyming book with fun pictures. From, dogs, to kings to lions Heller makes it fun to learn parts of speech! This would be a great book to keep on the classroom shelf and maybe even use as a read aloud to a first or second grade class. I also like how on the last page Heller included a compiled list of pronouns which is would be a good teaching tool one on one with a student to show them all the pronouns if they are stuck finding the right one.
I am fascinated with the English language and hate to see and hear it abused. Mine, All Mine is a book about pronouns. If you don’t know what one is, you will after reading this book. The author, Ruth Heller, explains what a pronoun is, how they are used and why they are important.
Heller’s illustrations are wonderful and full of color. This is an all-age book. It can be enjoyed on several levels – listening, seeing as well as actually learning something.
I love Ruth Heller's books about parts of speech - but not this one. The illustrations are beautiful as ever, but I just wasn't a fan of the narrative. It was choppy, didn't flow across the tongue like her other books, and boring. I wouldn't want to teach pronouns with this book. Very disappointing.
Mine, All Mine is a book about pronouns that describes the different kinds of pronouns through using multiple examples. It explains what a pronoun is and how you use them. I like the way the author identify the pronouns on each page. She ensures that they stand out in a different color and are written in a larger font so that the student can identify them.
PRONOUNS!!! Mine All Mine is a very colorful book about learning pronouns and how to place them in a sentence. Gives awesome tips about how pronouns take the place of nouns. In classes sometimes students dread learning about grammar so this would be a fun way to get the class engaged in the lesson.
This book teaches you about every type of pronoun by using them in sentences. The book also reviews proper usage of pronouns through the lyrical text. A great book to use when teaching students about pronouns. The pictures are bight, bold, and quite funny.
This story would be a perfect introduction to pronouns! This should be a book that is read often and the children may be able to fill in the rhyming word so that when they have to use a word at a certain time, the story will come in their head. Like School House Rock, but in book form.
I really really don't get it. This is a book about pronouns, for heavens sake. My 5-year-old granddaughter wanted to read it twice - and then we started again and got interrupted. Maybe it was the rhyming scheme.
She's really clever. The names of the different parts of speech don't interest me, but she has practical poems in here to remember the rules that we frequently misuse.
Mine, All Mine: A Book About Pronouns is a book that describes the different kinds of pronouns through using several different examples. The pronouns on each page stand out in a different color and are written in a larger font so that students can easily identify them. The illustrations in this book are big, bold, and colorful attention grabbers for young readers. The illustrator used various mediums to fill this book, like sketches with colored pencils, paintings and such. They show exactly what is being said in the book. At the end of the book there are all the types of pronouns listed as well as examples for each of the pronouns. This book provides a fun way for students to learn about pronouns and is a great introduction for new learners and those who may confuse their pronouns. It provides great clarity.
I LOVE Ruth Heller's books. This has been on my To Read list for years and just found a stack of them in the elementary library. What an absolute delight they all are! Her vibrant, take-your-breath-away illustrations along with her witty rhymes are the best guides to Parts of Speech that exists. Now it's not super easy....grammar, since no longer taught, really, is hard. But for those who want to remember when to use whom and when to use who (or in which order to place yourself in a sentence), there is no better refresher.
Remember? Whom is a word? Remember? "Me and her went to the store" is not a sentence that makes any sense! YA and MG editors! I have a cute book for you!
This whole series is a fun way to supplement our grammar studies! In this book, the section on who and whom is particularly fantastic, and I have my kiddos memorize it!! This simple rhyme clarifies when to use each one and makes it easy!
Pronouns are apart of our daily language. It's important for children to learn it's meaning and value, not just how to say it. Mine, All Mine touches on different types of pronouns and homophones. They start off with basic words and gradually move along to the tough ones. It was a challenging book with good word play and pictures to explain it. It would be great for a grade school English class.
