OUR STORY A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies and Lonely Planet was born. One hundred million guidebooks later, Lonely Planet is the world’s leading travel guide publisher with content to almost every destination on the planet.
This is a good comprehensive view of the Dominican Republic and what it has to offer when traveling there. A great deal of this book didn't apply to my upcoming trip, because I'm not travelling the whole island, but it sparked my interest in one day possibly exploring the island in a road tip.
The book is full of great information and tips when traveling to Dominican Republic, as well as historical context. Overall I found this guide very helpful, the photos are bright and in high quality. I'll be bringing it on my trip for reference, and in preparation the survival guide is incredibly helpful.
Lonely Planet guides are the best. I took this book along while touring a country I lived many years ago. All of the info is spot on. Good recommendations on hotels and attractions. I wish they'd include some low end choices as they have in past editions for other destinations I've read. By the way, the Dom Rep is a great place to visit. The resorts are great, the people are super friendly, and the country is beautiful.
Really helpful, if you want to explore Dominican on your own (not just sleep in all-inclusive resort). No idea how we`d found the way around if it wasn`t for the maps included in this book (especially the captions about guagua departure points). Prices have changed up during last 3 years, but the book still gives an idea about how much in avarage you should pay.
this book was pull as representaton, I love to read up on place I am about to go, I read four books about tourism in the DR and a few on culture and history, this one was ok, basic, there were better ones, not listed!
