Seven years ago, I was one of the best in downhill mountain biking—a girl with grit, speed, and a shot at gold. But that was before my competitor’s brother sabotaged my bike, before the crash shattered my body and stole the future I’d spent my entire life chasing.
They thought I disappeared. And maybe I did.
But now I’m back, racing under a new name and hiding behind a mask—one that makes me unrecognizable. To the world, I’m just another guy chasing a podium. To him, I’m no one to fear. That’s exactly how I want it.
This isn’t about glory. I didn’t return to reclaim my title. I came to ruin his.
To beat him at his own game. To humiliate him in front of everyone who cheered when I fell. To prove that even broken, a girl like me was always better than him.
But what I didn’t see coming was them. The golden boy with something to prove. The French flirt who grins like sin and plays even dirtier. And the one person I swore I’d never let close—my brother’s best friend, who sees more than I can afford to show.
This was supposed to be simple. But nothing about revenge ever is.
Broken Breath is a slow burn, instant spark, spicy, hurt/comfort, MMFM, why choose romance. It’s the first book in the Rogue Riders Duet and ends on a cliffhanger. For mature readers.
❀⋆.ೃ࿔* BROKEN BREATH°❀⋆.ೃ࿔* Is the first full length why choose sports romance book in the (Rogue Riders) duet by new to me author Blake Black..
☀︎ Reverse harem (why choose) ☀︎ Sports romance ☀︎ Hidden identity ☀︎ Found family
I really loved this “hidden girl” trope, the dynamics between Alaina and the boys, the sibling closeness, a rekindled crush, even though going into this having no knowledge about the overall competitiveness of mountain biking, the author broke it all down and made it easy to understand and follow, this was such an enjoyable read and it definitely won't be the last I read from this author. She held my focus throughout and I found myself so engrossed in the storyline, the outside world ceased to exist.
Once I'd seen that the second book had released this week and that this had been on my ipad since release day, I finally jumped in, I'm so glad I waited because even though I'd expected it and I was prepared with the next book to jump into that cliffy was kind of brutal. As it is she's duct taped up with a broken body, self medicating to ease the daily pain she endures, I'm dreading to see what's happened to her.
This was a slow moving, slow burn, high angst, kind of story, we're introduced to Alaina who was at the top of her league of downhill mountain biking in the women's division, now she's seeking vengeance after her bike was sabotaged and she was left broken and damaged after a fall which nearly killed her. But with seven years of grueling workouts she is now back on the circuit with her thirty-four year old brother Dane as her manager.
Even though twenty-four year old Alaina doesn't have any proof her bike was tampered with 7 years ago she knew her bike right down to each and every last bolt and realised before it was too late that something was wrong during her last jump that day, and her guess is that it leads right to Isaac Raine who was near her bike that fateful day, he'd touched it. Now she wants to take him down a few pegs by beating and humiliating him in the men’s elite league. But she can't do that as Alaina, but as Al, an unknown rookie that's come out of nowhere. Cutting her long hair, wearing a chest binder to hide her breasts, socks in her pants, and a voice which she deepens she's all set to get her revenge.
But she didn't factor the boys that try to get under her skin, she's drawn to them, but because they don't know she's under disguise she tries to keep her distance as much as she can. But these boys are relentless, walls get taken down, kisses get shared, and a crush she'd had back then on her brothers best friend kicks into overdrive, but here's the thing he knows who she is and he's the only one, those other two boys (French boy Luc and English boy Mason) they have no idea.
Mason keeps his head down, barely talks to anyone, and a rumor that follows him everywhere he goes. Four years ago, he lost everything, his reputation, his backing, his father was the only one who believed him and stood by his side. He needs to stat winning for his father.
Twenty-four year old Luc (the flying frenchman) is at the top of his game as the reigning champion, the fans love him.
And her long ago crush Fin, her brother's best friend, he's thirty four, who they call Grampa Greer because he's the oldest racing in the world cup.
This book was everything my Chronic Pain soul needed and more. 🥹🥰🤯🔥 This hurt - in a good and bad way, the best way. 🥹 I hung onto every single word and fell in love with all the characters. The grit, the realness, the hard fucking truth of living with Chonic Pain. The emotional roller-coaster of living as a medically complex person and the impacts that has on all aspects of your life was presented so well 🤯🙏🙌
Regardless of the chronic pain representation - the story?! The men?! The sport?! Chefs kiss 🤌🤌🥵

Broken Breath blends the high stakes sport of downhill mountain biking with emotional trauma. Alaina has been training for the past seven years to return to the sport that broke her so she can become the all around champion…in the men’s elite league. She never had any proof but she knows Isaac Raine tampered with her bike before her crash. She has been living for revenge and is ready to beat and humiliate him. I knew nothing about the sport but Blake gives a great rundown of important information before the story but without it, I wouldn’t have been lost. I was pulled in with just the prologue. She is back on the circuit with her brother Dane as her manager. Alaina slowly starts to build relationships with her old crush (her brother’s best friend), the tarnished golden boy, and the flirty flying Frenchmen. Each of these characters are amazing and so different but all their broken pieces find a way to fit together. They each find a connection with Alaina, healing parts of her she thought long dead. The sharp banter and flirty fun had me giggling. The descriptions of the race made me feel like I was watching from the hot seat. Now Miss Blake is known for her cliffhangers and this is a doozy, I literally gasped out loud at 2am. Thankfully we don’t have to wait long for book two!

A Few Favorite Quotes: “I’ll patch it with pills, stitch it with grit, and hold it together with duct tape and denial if I have to.”
“Stupid, reckless bastard. I’d already thought he was hot, but this just made him f*cking scorching.”
“Unrequited feelings are just extra cardio at this point. Keeps the heart rate up.”
“Friends mean giving pieces of yourself away, and I don’t have any spare pieces left.”
“I’m not standing because I’m strong. I’m standing because falling would mean letting him win.”
Broken Breath is the very best kind of character-driven story, the world of downhill mountain biking and revenge Ms. Black has created is elegantly romantic, tinged with sadness but also with hope as the strength of a bond between our characters warms the emotional freeze a turbulent life has caused.
“Anything can be a dream if it’s small enough.”
Alaina is an extraordinary woman, her mental and emotional scarring running far deeper than the surface marks on her body. Despite her fear and singular focus on vengeance, she holds her own not only in sport but also against Mason, Luc, and Finn as they begin to chip away at her shields. The romance is deliciously slow but packs more than enough tension that we know the inevitable will be nothing short of potently passionate.
Overall, Broken Breath subjects us to the sharpest of pains interspersed with flirty banter-filled moments of levity, easily earning a spot on our shelf of favourites—the first of Ms. Black’s books that I’ve read, but certainly not the last as I will be devouring her backlist until book 2 is in my hands.
IF YOU LOVE: ♥ why choose romance ♥ sports romance ♥ tragic past ♥ revenge plot ♥ FMC disguised as man ♥ slow burn
id like to point out that Shes The Man is one of my all time favorite movies and the fact that Alaina dresses up like a man to be put on the same team as her enemy so she can kick his ass?? YES PLEASE- it’s like you knew that i would be obsessed with this book. i have also determined that Blake will forever be an instant buy author because i have read every single book and have loved every. single. one. of them. you can’t ever get rid of me 🧎🏼♀️ i have been left with another cliffhanger that i will need to recover from for the next 3 months and i don’t know what to do with myself for the time being, i can’t stop thinking about my flirty frenchman Luc and you’re telling me i have to wait until October for the next book?! 😭 i can’t express how much i loved it, my emotions went through it, im still trying to process everything. i don’t like to pick favorites but my man Luc is the center of my world rn, he can do no wrong and i love him- he can be my emotional support himbo any day of the week. thank you so much for letting me ARC read- five stars as usual 🥹🖤
ARC Review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️ Maybe, for just this moment, we’re both holding up the same kind of broken.
This is Blake’s best book yet! I felt every word deep in my soul. The depth of emotion, the pain, the longing… all combined in a story that had me in a chokehold. Full on book hangover has been engaged. This is the first book in a long while that had me up WAY past my bed time. And it was worth all the lost sleep.
I love the “hidden girl” trope! I snatch them up immediately. This is one of the best I’ve found. I felt a kinship with Alaina as a chronic pain sufferer. Her struggles resonated deeply with my own. Bonus, in my younger days I was huge into mountain biking. Blake’s writing made me feel like I was right back on my bike.
I’m obsessed with Luc and can’t wait for more of him. He outshines all the others (sorry guys).
Slow burn. High angst. Loads of emotional damage.
Blake once again left us at a killer cliffhanger. I need part two, stat.
Thank you, Blake Black, for this amazing advance copy.
I was so excited to receive this ARC, because I have loved every duet the author has written so far and this did NOT disappoint. Already by Chapter 5 we had angsty feels hitting, and with all the hate fuelling the FMC I was drawn straight in to both the plot and all the characters. I honestly love how the author just draws me in, and creates characters that are so addictive. Not only do you get to know the FMC, but it really feels like you get to know the MMCs outside of their budding relationships with the FMC, and also see their vulnerabilities too. But I DEVOURED this, and I am gutted that it had to end, because the ending was brutal and has left me reeling and desperate for the next in the duet.
What to expect: *First person POV *Book one in a duet that ends on a cliffy *She's the man movie energy *Why Choose *Slowburn *Revenge plot *Brothers best friend *Age gap *Slightly darker themes
i am so fully obsessed with not only this book but this author. They have the PERFECT balance of plot to spice. The plot follows our FMC who is hellbent on revenge after a guy sabotaged her bike and caused her accident. So now she's reentering downhill biking as a man to beat him and ruin his life.
One of my favorites parts is the fact that only one of the men in the why choose know she's a woman and its her brothers best friend. The chemistry between the characters are off the charts. My favorite MMC is a frenchman who is the cutest himbo who just wants to be with the FMC. Its so precious.
“It means…” he murmurs, “… you don’t have to chase the whole sky, Petit. You can just lie here with someone warm, under a cheap blanket, in a borrowed bed, and decide this is enough. That this little dream is real, safe, and entirely yours.”
STOPPPPPP. i love him. I am currently counting the days for book two to drop so I can ignore everyone to read it. you need to add this to your TBR.
Broken Breath is an emotional rollercoaster of a book. I was unsure if I would enjoy this considering it’s not fantasy, and also it’s about a sport that I know nothing about. The plot is so character-driven and well-developed that neither of those things ended up mattering much to me. From the moment I started this, I was hooked. The rage and pain that Alaina feels is so intense and genuine that my heart was breaking with hers. To have everything stolen from you, and no real way to fight back is so terrifying, but to be in constant agony while having to suffer it is unimaginable. Her all-consuming desire for revenge is easy to understand, and Dane (her brother) doing his best to support her wishes despite how scared he is to lose her at the end of it all is so heartbreaking. Not to mention the tension between her and the love interests, it was almost overwhelming. Mason and Luc being so into her, but her not being able to reveal that she’s not actually Allen Crews just gives me the same feelings that watching Mulan did. The anxiety, the stress, the ANGST. This made me cry more than once, and I have no regrets or complaints. 5/5, would recommend to anyone willing to listen to me talk about this.
Omg Blake has done it again. I loved every single thing about this story.
Alaina is probably one of my favorite FMC’s. While she is extremely broken and damaged, she is fighting for revenge. Even though she’s in pain and so broken she fights like hell to make it.
Blake’s storytelling is incredible. Her ability to make you love each character, to feel their emotions, to get inside their heads and love them even if you wanna smack em sometimes. I’m looking at you Finn 🤣. But these characters are just incredible.
Mason, my broken boy man his story breaks my heart. I was blown away by how Blake told his story and weaved this difficult topic into this book truly she did an incredible job.
Luc my little broken boy who’s a party animal on the outside but when he’s truly alone is so broken. I absolutely l loved everything about him and his growth as a character.
Finn I wanted to smack him most of the time but I grew to love him. Blake does an incredible job of not only telling a story but showing immense character growth throughout the book.
If you loved the movie she’s the man and wanted it to be why choose then this is the duet for you. I absolutely love everything Blake writes her stories have my whole heart. I’m so excited for book 2.
🎶 “And maybe in some masochistic way. I kinda find it all exciting. Like, which lover will I get today?”🎶
Seven years after a sabotage crash destroyed Alaina’s career, a former downhill mountain biking prodigy returns under a new name and hidden identity - not for glory, but for revenge. Determined to take down the rival who stole her future, she races to humiliate him on the very stage where she once fell.

[Luc]
Luc STILL wants her even under the assumption that is a guy. He didn’t care about questioning his sexuality - the moment he felt a flicker of attraction, he went all in. He cared for Al loudly and in public, calling his mom to tell her he might be bisexual, putting Al on his lap, dancing with him in front of everyone. Full throttle. I cannot wait to see his reaction when he discovers that Al is actually a girl. I am not sure if he will feel hurt that she did not trust him with the truth or if he will be able to laugh about it. What I love most is how transparent Luc is with his feelings and how badly he wanted Al to let him in instead of hesitating. They needed each other and gravitated toward each other’s loneliness, and I loved that. I LOVE HIM. HE LOVES LOUDLY. HE IS A LOVER BOY. 💌💗😭🤍
[Finn]
Don’t even get me started. She had a crush on him since she was a teenager. He was always older, and clearly he did not feel the same way then (or tried not to because of the age gap). Now time has passed, and he knew it was her the moment he saw her. But he still will not admit to his feelings because he is afraid of hurting Dane and ruining his friendship with her brother. In the process, he is hurting Alaina. He kisses her and calls it a mistake. He sleeps with her, doesn’t realize she is a virgin, and then tells her he should not have done it. He acts out of pure fear and refuses to be open about his feelings for her. He does not admit he cares, because he is intimidated by the age gap and feels like he has not accomplished enough in his life. He needs to get it together before he loses her entirely and needs to grovel in book 2.
[Mason]
The rape allegations… when he never even slept with her 😭. MASON. The way his mom overdosed after her own assault and turned to painkillers is the reason he always believes victims and never spoke up for himself. ITS SAD. He wants friends and craves companionship, but he does not believe he deserves it because no one seems to want to be near him. He calls Alaina Bambi and has feelings for her while still believing she is a guy. The soft touches, his observant nature, the way he cares, the line about how they are “nobody” to each other - my babies. I love them so much. P.S. Mason and Luc are going to hit so hard once they finally get together in the next book. The tension has been building from the way they once cared for each other to their competitive rivalry, until Luc believed the rumors 🥹. I cannot wait for their full development.
—*•.¸♡ ★·.·☾ ゚。´OVERALL゚☁︎。`·.·★ ♡¸.•*⋆—
I just want Alaina to get her revenge but also to find peace with her guys. I want her to let go of her anger and finally feel safe and loved. I hope she is not too injured. I hate that Finn triggered this spiral and reckless ride, and it makes me sad. But I am still looking forward to the next book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I have to be in a very particular mood to read and enjoy this author. Sometimes the trauma turns into too much tell, not enough show vibes and characters talk to each other like therapists. However, the characters deal with trauma in believable ways.
That said, I enjoyed the story. I laughed out loud in a couple spots. The author does a great job of bringing you into a sport most are unfamiliar with. The cliff-hanger is absolutely brutal.
Omg this was so good, I loved Alaina so much my heart broke for her like if I could help her live in peace I would do it, I loved her relationship with her brother in some of their moments i was sobbing , the guyssss let’s start with the star of the show Luc motherfucking Delacroix omg o love him so much like the switch? Was perfect he’s character is perfect I loved how he was with Alaina she needed someone like him ( I need someone like him ) , now to second best , Mason he wasn’t there a lot but when he’s there? You know I loved he’s friendship with Alaina it was really refreshing to see them build a friendship first and them being each others nobody (iykyk) , and lastly ( in this ranking and the race ranking ) Finn sorry but I wanted to punch him so many times like if he hadn’t had history with my girl I wouldn’t have liked him at all ( he’s a good person but not good guy too my girl (in my eyes) ) like dude I get it but get your shit together like my man luc ( I’m biased) , anyway Blake is one of my fav WC authors I have almost read all of her books and I loved every single one of them and this was no different I’m so excited for the second book and how everything will wrap up, thank you Blake for the ARC it was a pleasure reading it 🫶🏻
( I suck at reviewing this it the best I could do )
This one started out slow for me as I am not into the biking world. I wanted to give it a chance because of the mental health representation. By the end I couldn’t put it down. And that cliffhanger!!! Glad book 2 is already out.
I absolutely loved this one. Alaina was at the top of her game, then it all crashed down around her. Now, 7 years later, she’s back to exact her revenge. Disguised as a man at that. She has her brother on her side, and that’s it. The two of them against the world. Alaina has been through a heck of a lot, and now she’s on a mission of vengeance. She doesn’t need anyone but Dane. Finn, Luc, and mason have other ideas. Especially Luc, he wants Crews and he’s not taking no for an answer. There are some confused feelings, and some angst due to the whole ‘disguised as a man’ part. I love Luc, he’s always the life of the party, with the flirty, loud, charismatic persona that no one tries to see beyond. Mason has hit rock bottom the past year. He lost everything, and he’s trying to do it all on his own, with just his dad on his side. He’s angry, standoffish, and wants nothing to do with anything but racing. And Finn, best friend of Alaina’s brother Dane, 10 years older and firmly believing that she is off limits. He wants her but he won’t let himself have her. I love all these characters and I can’t wait til they all actually get together. This ends on a cliffhanger and I cannot wait for part 2!!
5 ⭐️ 2 🔥 Dark(ish) Sports (Downhill Mountain Biking) Why Choose/Polyamorous Romance MMFM Slow Burn Secret Identity Revenge Plot Brother’s BFF Rivals Pet Rat 🐀 Found Family Cliffhanger ⚠️This book does contain dark themes. Please check content/trigger warnings.⚠️ So good!! In the running to be one of my favorite duets by Blake! I absolutely love that all her duets are relatively the same in relation and temperature (darkish, why choose romance and slow-medium spice), but all her duets are so unique from each other! From dancing, mountain biking, ghosts and AI; you never know where she’ll take you next! It’s honestly hard to rank them!! This one is about Alaina (Allen), our FMC that is out for revenge, after her brother’s competitor sabotaged her bike seven years ago, that led to her body and life to be completely shattered. She’s back after intensive surgeries and training, but she’s not back as Alaina, but as Allen, to reclaim her title and ruin the one that shattered everything. But she didn’t see them coming: the French flirt, the brooding bad boy, and her brother’s best friend. Now she has to try and mask herself and her feelings, or all her plans of revenge will come tumbling down. && of course Blake will leave you hanging on a cliff! I NEED and can’t wait for the next book!
Blake has done it again! I’m completely blown away with this book, I loved it so much! It was so emotional, and that ending omggg my heart.
Blake has an amazing way of making you connect to these characters. Alaina is so strong, she’s just fantastic and there were a lot of emotional moments with her.
ᴀʟᴀɪɴᴀ. ᴍʏ ʙᴀʙʏ ɢɪʀʟ.
I really like the men too! I’m excited to read about the relationships developing and I need all of the healing. I recommend so much and I can’t wait for the next book!
Blake really knows how to set a scene and hold you captive! She is also the queen of cliffhangers! and this one is no different! You will find yourself in love with characters really quickly while loathing others! This series is going to pull the heartstrings. ESP with that ending! I love love LOVE the Mountain bike riders storyline and can say I’ve never read one before- but I was totally there for it! Bring on book 2!!!
I've always liked this author's writing style. She is very good when it comes to describing the characters' emotions, and you feel fully immersed into the story. This book is no different. The problems were the slow pacing and the flashbacks that made the book a bit boring at times.
The FMC is a young woman who almost died in an accident during a racing event. Driven by revenge, she returns back to racing but posing as a man. She is quite broken, physically and emotionally, but it is expected after what she's been through.
The plot is interesting, and it seems the author did her work researching the sport she is writing about. Given the trope of hidden identity, I expected it to be amusing, but unfortunately, the overall tone is sad.
The MMCs are distinguishable. They all have their good and bad traits, but I really didn't like Finn in this book. He was the only one who knew all about the heroine, but instead of helping, he did only damage, especially at the end of the book.
The romance was a bit weird. Two of the MMCs think that the heroine is a man. They did not question their attraction at all. They just went with it. Overall, I didn't like how this was handled. It did not feel romantic, and I wasn't sure what exactly they were attracted to.
Holy canoly, my heart. This was absolutely fantastic. I do wanna preface this by mentioning that this does include false grape accusations... I ultimately only docked half a star because while I just don't love exasperating this issue, Blake did write it in a way that made me feel okay about it. Still don't love it, but I thought her taken on it was an interesting one.
Really though, this overall story was fantastic. She's The Man meets Downhill Racing meets Soul Crushing Mental Health Rep and I loved it so much. Alaina is such a heartbreaking, amazing, bad a character. She's so freaking strong and I loved watching her with her guys. Each of these men are so different, but wonderful, even if I wanna kick Finn occasionally. Luc is a doll and Mason makes me wanna hug him on the daily.
I love the revenge plot and I can't wait to see how it plays out. The cliffhanger is probably her most brutal yet... October can not come soon enough. Thank you so much to Blake for the advanced copy!
I.. made a mistake, I've lamented about it before, i should not start an unfinished Blake Black duet, but I went a step further and applied for an eArc. The cliffhangers in these books are legendary.
This book ties a little into the sportromance hype that is going on, but instead of hockey it focuses on downhill mountainbiking. Which I knew nothing about, but does make for an extreme (downhill) ride.
He characters feel like complex people and not just play characters on a page, and I like my main characters messy and fill of back story. I was all ready to root for brothers best friend, but ended up falling for some French charm.
As with all Blake's books the story sucked me right in and brought me along for the ride. I will have trouble patiently waiting for the next book in this thrilling duology.
Al aka Aliana is a bada** but is going through so much emotionally after her accident. I loved how she is set on revenge but gets so much more out of it. I can’t wait to see what happens with her in book 2!
Luc, Mason, Finn each very different and I liked each one in their own way. Luc had me laughing he was so funny, Finn kinda made me mad but still l loved him and Mason I need more of him I feel like we didn’t get much of him and I can’t wait for more of him hopefully he will be more involved in book 2 but so far a feel like is and adorable broody man!!
I also really loved Dane and Piper I love a good side character and they are amazing!! I kinda hope they get a book as well lol!!
There was a few small things that kinda bothered me during this story but I over all really enjoy Allen( Al, Aliana) and her Men!!
I can’t wait to see what happens next after that cliffhanger!!
I absolutely loved this book. Blake Black just writes these books that grabs you and doesn't let go. All the emotions I felt in this book, man I cannot even describe how I felt.
I haven't read anything book about downhill biking before and let me tell you I am hooked for this sport now. Alaina suffered a terrible accident and she feels like someone tampered with her bike to cause it. She is out for revenge but she is also in constant pain and this has her having thoughts about revenge only and then feels life is over. With her brother's help, she fakes being a boy to rude in the men's league.
Along the way while riding she gets to know Luc the cocky Frenchman, Mason Payne the broody one who has his demons too and then there's Finn her brother's best friend and a crush she's had for a long time.
Alaina rides well and is doing she came to do but things happen and she starts to get feelings. What will happen when lines get blurred? Will they find out she's a girl? Oh my goodness that cliffhanger was brutal. Definitely want to read this book!
Blake just has a way of pulling you into the story and not letting you go! And then before you know it you’re reading the last page of the book wondering what the heck you’re supposed to do now.
This book was so fantastic. It was so fun and intriguing! The races and competitiveness was everything! I need more mountain biking romances. I need more of Al and Luc and Mason and Finn.
