My Mobster #1

He Should Be Mine

Rate this book
The only man I want is the one man I can’t have.

Molly is beautiful. Feisty. Sensual. Passionate.

A pretty boy who knows his trade.

He is also the very epitome of high-maintenance. Rude. Stroppy. Always aiming to unnerve people with his brazen words and attitude.

It makes me want to hold him tight and show him he doesn't need to put on an act. Not with me.

But he belongs to my boss. And when your boss is a mafia capo, that’s a line you do not cross.

My role is to guard Molly. Keep him safe. Stop him running away. Prevent anyone from knowing my boss has a boy.

I’m not supposed to crave him.

I’m just supposed to watch him. Day after day. Night after night.

Watch and never touch.

I'm his jailer.

He's my damnation.

He Should Be Mine is a sizzling dark mafia gay romance with a guaranteed happy ever after.

Coffee, spicy books, and a profound disrespect for tomorrow (aka reading until four in the morning). My three favorite things.

I aim to write the kind of stories that keep you up way too late, while squealing, kicking your feet, and falling hopelessly in love with your new book boyfriend (or two... I don’t judge).

Grab that triple-shot brown sugar shaken espresso. Trust me, we’re both going to need it.

Let’s spread those pages.

This is pining galore.

Set in the London mafia world, we have Dario, the soldato of his cruel boss Riccardo, who’s tasked Dario with being the bodyguard/jailer of his newly ‘acquired’ boy, Molly. Molly - a feisty, femme, snarky, dazzling brat of a boy who slowly drives Dario, his tall, dark, mysterious, patient, dangerous keeper insane - in all the ways ❤️‍🔥

He Should Be Mine felt very much like a chamber play. Most of the story is set in this apartment, with these two men, who want each other but can never have each other. Imagine the restraint, the pining, and yearning, the looks and casual, secret touches full of hidden desire and you have the high stakes of this book.

Some important info:
As Molly is a sex-worker and currently owned by Riccardo, he has to sleep with him during the course of the book. It’s very painful for both Molly and Dario and it is painful for the reader, too. Not because of the typical emotions that come with one of the MCs sleeping with another, but because we have to watch him do it against his will and often enough from the perspective of Dario who slowly looses his mind listening to Molly being raped, frankly. Thankfully that’s never on page and we only see the aftermath, but it’s still very heavy and uncomfortable at times.

Both MCs are victims of circumstance (one more than the other though!) and them enduring Riccardo’s visits only underlined the deep, emotional connection they share. It made their bond feel even more special and important and added a beautiful layer of hurt/comfort to the story. The way Dario cared for Molly after the rougher scenes was honestly very moving 🥹

Dario’s shift from ’he's such an annoying brat’ to ‚I’ll burn the whole entire world down for my boy was slow and well developed.

I’m never going to look at another person. I’m never going to touch anyone else. For the rest of my days it is going to be Molly and only Molly. Now that I have found perfection, why would I waste my time with anything inferior? ❤️‍🔥

Molly’s POV was heartbreaking at times, because he just could not believe someone would want him for him and not just his body. That someone could care and comfort and love him on such a level, and him slowly realising he was worthy of everything good, was beautiful to read!

That being said. I did not vibe with the writing. The sentences were very short. Not more than four of five words. In each sentence. Sometimes less. It got on my nerves. Annoyed me. Frustrated me. Pulled me out of the story. The whole book was written that way.
AAAAH do you see what I mean?! This writing style really was not for me. I wanted to dnf early on because I felt my aggression level rising steadily because of these short sentences. The set up did hook me enough to bear that frustration though and I did eventually get used to it and was sucked into the story.

Other than that, I would have liked to see them together more after the endless pining but I suspect we’ll meet them again in the upcoming books of the series! I also could have done with more background info on how Molly and Dario came to be the people that they are now. And I thought the book dragged a bit in the middle.

But even though the writing drove me bonkers sometimes, I have to admit that this book was incredibly difficult to put down and might have cost me precious hours of sleep because I simply could not stop reading at night!

3,5⭐️

Thanks to GRR for the chance to read this arc, this is my honest opinion.

The one man I want, is the only man I can’t have. And I’m going to have to move heaven and earth to change that.

A different vibe from the usual mafia romances. Instead of your typical ‘mafia boss meets boy’ it’s ‘mafia boss’ guard falls for the boss’ boy’ .
Oh, the pining!

“You keep pushing me,” I say, low and even. Warning him. Or perhaps pleading with him to show me mercy. “One day, I won’t stop myself.” He doesn’t blink. “Maybe I’m counting on that.”

A story of slow burning tension, lingering stares, longing from the other side of the wall, an unexpected queer awakening, a pretty boy whose been too hurt by the world and a dangerous mafia man that just wants to save him.
I loved the possessiveness, the way Dario took care of Molly, the way he knew the real Molly behind the fake mask of survival.

I would have loved for this to be longer. Give me more tension, more pining, just more!
Still, an entertaining mafia romance and a loving ending AND lots of setup for future installments. I want all these bad boys to find the love of their life.

“Don’t ever let me go.”
“Never.”

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

⭐️ 4.5 stars rounded up! ⭐️

non-con tag is NOT for the MC's together, it's for one of the MC's being SA'ed by another side character. No rape happens between the MC's at all.

Dario is the illegitimate son of the Don of an Italian mafia crime family, the Ajello family. His father, the Don, has never formally acknowledged him, so he's been relegated to a lower position in the family than he would if he was a legitimate son. His have brother, Riccardo, on the other hand, IS legitimate and the formal heir to take over one day.

So Dario is Riccardo's soldato, and Riccardo is his capo. He has to do what he says, right? He's his boss. And for a long time Dario is fine being and doing just that.

But 6 months prior to the main events of this book, Riccardo tells him to go him a "femboy twink" because he's secretly gay and wants to secretly fuck one. So Dario does, and with that he finds Molly, who is supposed to be a temporary thing which probably one day Riccardo would get bored of and have killed (and would have Dario do it).

But 6 months on, and Molly is still around, and Dario has been slowly falling for him. Even if he is a bit of a brat and a menace who likes to defy the rules.

But really, Riccardo comes every few days or so on average at nigh to fuck Molly and then leave, and Dario is the one who has to guard Molly almost 24/7, and look after him and make sure no one sees him and finds out he's connected to Riccardo, or that anything happens to him.

So of course, Dario starts to fall for the small, feisty twink who likes bright colors and bold clothes and has a bit of femininity to him and the way he presents himself. But he's very much a man, and Dario is in a bit of denial at first, but soon enough he's starting to accept that Molly is his entire world, his entire reason for being.

But nothing can happen, because Riccardo "owns" Molly and is possessive as fuck in a very not fun way - it's nothing to do with love, Riccardo is a sick, twisted man but he views Molly is his thing, his toy and he doesn't like people touching this things - so Dario isn't even allowed to enter Molly's room, and Riccardo has cameras up all over the apartment he put Molly in so they have to be aware of them everywhere they go in the apartment - except for Molly's room (because Riccardo fucks him in there and he doesn't want recorded evidence of him being with a man) and Dario's room right next door to Molly's room.

It makes for extreme UST and longing. These two want each other so bad, but can barely even touch. Eventually all they can really do is communicate their want through their eyes. And words, as the cameras don't have audio - but they still barely talk about that even as feelings start to emerge.

Riccardo is a looming presence throughout this, showing up every now and again to ruin things. It is never shown, and Dario a lot of the times puts headphones in so he doesn't have to listen to the sound of them together, but pretty soon it's clear that Molly doesn't want it, and he has a harder and harder time pretending he does (as he is a sex worker, he does pretend a lot of the time and knows how to play the part) the more he falls for Dario and the closer they get. (Also it is shown that sometimes Riccardo drugs Molly so that is clear rape as well.)

Thankfully near the second half of this book, sexual encounters with Riccardo start to cease, even though the threat of it is there. But they are able to get Molly out of it when Riccardo makes him sick (we just see the after affects and get the gist of what he did to Molly later through descriptions of his injuries) and then when pretends to get a cold a little later. There is this one scene closer to the end when Riccardo is threatening and it seems he could really hurt Molly, but for some reason he just leaves? We never find out why, but it is a relief anyway that nothing happens.

As it is, between our two MC's, they don't even kiss until about two thirds of the way into this, so the actual sex part of this takes a long while to happen.

All the while, soon enough Dario starts making plans to be able to delegitimize Riccardo and his standing - his father, the Don, already asks for Dario to spy on him and report back to him because Riccardo is a bit of a loose cannon who isn't entirely competent at his job - and save Molly from him, as Riccardo is getting increasingly violent, and he could legitimately kill Molly.

But the kicker is Dario has to be smart about it, and that takes time, time Molly is starting to run out of with how unhinged Riccardo is stating to get.

But Dario will do whatever it takes to save Molly, and so Molly can be with him as he would take over as the new heir and be secure and powerful enough to have Molly and keep him safe and happy and loved instead of living in constant fear and dread.

Once these two DO get to have sex, it's like a powder keg going off, as it's been broiling for ages with these two before they finally get to do it - and once they do, it's wonderful. The wait was a big excruciating, as these two don't even get to penetrative sex until around 80ish percent, but once they do it is SO good.

And how Dario deals with Riccardo once and for all is SO satisfying.

He does this all for Molly and while this type of man would be dangerous in real life, the lengths he'll go to keep Molly safe and happy are swoon worthy in fiction. So damn hot too.

Seeing them get their HEA in the end was SO satisfying, as it seemed they would never get it.

My only real niggles which made me give .5 off to this is little things like this says Molly is 23, and then all the sudden he's 24 at the end - he had a birthday? When? Barely any days are skipped over in this, so either the author forgot they made him 23 and then all the sudden had him as 24, or they just let him have a birthday somewhere in there and what, neither of them made a big deal about it? Molly who loves to be a little extra, and Dario who would do anything to make him happy and they just...skip over his birthday? Huh?

Also this kept saying 6 months had gone by even as weeks in the story had happened, so it'd be at lest July near the end - maybe even August - so 7 or 8 months would have passed but it just kept saying it had been 6 months. Just a small niggle that annoyed me near the end.

Also Dario grew up in Italy and also America, and he had a car he imported from America to London and he drives it all the time, but...how he would he drive it when it's for the other side of the road? We drive on the right side of the road here, England drives on the lift side, so does he just drive an American car on the left side? Is that even allowed? That really made it a bit confusing when they were in a car driving, like which side do I imagine them on when they're driving? 😭

All these little niggles weren't too big of a deal in the end, so .5 stars off was fair.

Otherwise I loved this, and I loved these two together. Their chemistry was amazing, and all the heat and passion that exploded between them when they finally got to be fully together was amazing. There were a few times I feel like they could have gotten together sooner (like they go on a yacht together and yet they don't go below deck and fuck on it? Did they just not have enough time? The next chapter starts with that little outing having ended and nothing sexual having happened and I was a bit bummed tbh). I get they had to be very, very careful and hyper vigilant to not do anything, but if they're away from cameras I felt they could have given in more, in secluded places.

Not too big a deal, just something I felt could have been utilized better by these two to get time to actually touch each other and bet together.

So overall this was great and I'm definitely going to be reading more of this author. Already can't wait for the side characters from this book to get their own books coming up.

Can't wait! 🥰

I started it because it was supposed to be dark romance and mafia, but that part didn't convince me: I was expecting more drama, action and darkness. Still, it was an entertaining read. What I enjoyed the most was the dynamic between the main characters and how their relationship developed; that slow burn was well done for me and it was what hooked me the most.

The first half was a bit repetitive, but then it got more interesting. It lacked angst, though: I didn't feel it was distressing because many strong scenes happen off the page, and I think that's why I didn't manage to "live" them. I also missed details, both about Molly and Dario's past and in the narration itself, as sometimes it seemed that important things happened in the background and you were only shown the outcome.

All in all, it wasn't what I was expecting in terms of "dark mafia", but it was good to pass the time and be entertained.

dnf @ 66% - horrid ! this gave me monologue fatigue🥴

i actually don’t need to read pages and pages of monologues, esp when its only use is to regurgitate everything that just occurred in the most dumbed down manner possible, like ur readers aren’t capable of making inferences and understanding nuance??? not that there was much nuance in this book in the first place, so double crime! it felt like i was reading something written at a 3rd grade level😭 it was choppy as fuck from the short sentences and the author’s apparent strike from using contractions….like ur fucking up the flow, it reads so unnaturally.….i also do not want to be spoon fed the mcs connection like a toddler, i want to see it develop through actions.

speaking of, horrific development on the whole connection end. when it’s not practically non-existent, it’s clunky and unearned. i’m reading a vicious onslaught of inner thoughts about “falling in love” and “man i want to spend the rest of my life with” and “my man, my universe, my heart, my soul”..….mind you, this is all in their heads and they haven’t said shit to each other out loud about their interest (aside from all the ridiculously unbelievable eyeball communication), there’s been zero physical development, so this is basically the extent of the development aside from dario being nicer???…..huh??? how can anyone eat when the plate is fucking empty! the only thing that really changes in the mcs interactions is that dario starts caring how molly is treated bc he realizes he’s attracted to him. mind you, had zero problems leading molly to the slaughter when he first plucked him off the streets to take to riccardo, Known Piece of Shit, who dario lowkey thought was gonna fuck molly then dispose of him, murder style, that same night.

but dario gets creds for basic human decency bc molly’s been so mistreated that dario actually doesn’t have to do anything else. which makes his newfound soft treatment of molly unappealing bc it felt fake in a way?? like unnatural and therefore off-putting. and i’m supposed to put dario doing the bare minimum by caring about molly’s well-being and being nice to him, behavior spurred on only by attraction btw, and those heinous spoon-fed jumping-the-gun, my-moon-and-my-stars internal monologues together and be convinced??? i’m fucking starved!! unearned, i tell you!

also, dario pls come to the front….how do you go from “my man, my universe, my heart, my soul” to planning to marry riccardo’s widow (for mafia business reasons only, after you kill riccardo and take his place) and make molly your secret “mistress”💀💀💀 “my man, my universe, my heart, my soul, my mistress” ah yes, tale as old as time. may i suggest linking up with benedict bridgerton💀💀💀💀 like nahhhh, dario, ur gonna have to think outside the box for this one….like let’s not forget dario stopped molly from running away from riccardo with a “trust me, i’ve got a plan” stare (eyeball communication, see what i mean🙄) and considering they never say shit to each other out loud, molly is unaware his true love’s plan involves him being a mistress. like um pertinent information!!

anyway, i couldn’t take it anymore. the writing was just too annoying and juvenile, and the emotional development too deficient.

I got this book through KU because Jesse Reign called it out in her listserv email and I trust her judgement.

To be fair, I only got to 4% but I could tell that this book wasn’t for me. First of all, I don’t find the sassy effeminate twink MC appealing. And for some random, old lady get off my lawn Gen X reason, when an MC has pastel colored hair, I almost always end up not liking the book.

But also, I didn’t like the writing style at all. Super short sentences, almost sounds more like a list than a narrative. It can be done well— Possession by Rina Saint does it well, but first of all it is a plot device because of the situation and also, she doesn’t start the book with that writing which lets you know she is capable of less sparse writing. Maybe this book segues into a smoother narrative, but this combines with the sassy effeminate twink with pink tipped hair…wasn’t worth the investment for me.

Review for My Mobster: Book 1- He should be mine by Jessica Jackman

I have grown addicted to Mafia dark romances, and this book hit it on the nail for me. Add in a boy, Molly, and the man Dario, who has a strong hand to give him all he needs. The way Jessica Jackman wrote is the way that Molly wanted Dario to be the man to take him and show him who he is. To read the way they could only watch and look, but not touch, was sad, but it was what was to happen at that point. Molly, being the boy that Dario wanted, made it hard for Dario to watch what Molly went through at the hands of Riccardo. All Dario wanted was to keep Molly safe, to get him away from the boss so he could have him. The only thing I hate is that it took so long for them to be able to have what they wanted and needed. The way Dario had to be on the sidelines when Riccardo, the mafia boss, took what wasn't his in Dario's mind. The pain he sees when Riccardo takes Molly is rough at times in the book. This book was a nice read for me. Not my top pick, but still good to read. Jessica Jackman is a new read for me, so I will look to see what else she has written to see if they are what I look for.

Dee’s Grade: A+

Molly is a victim, survivor, and chaos demon. Circumstances have put him in a position where he has to do everything he can to survive. That doesn’t break his spirit.

Dario was born on the wrong side of the blanket in a crime family and is forced to do the bidding of men he doesn’t respect. He’s been able to make it work until Molly. He’s ready to risk it all for Molly and he can’t understand why. Molly is everything he believes he shouldn’t and can’t want yet he wants him anyway.

He's ready to go scorched earth for Molly and it makes me swoon.

This book is a ride that you don’t want to end the HEA is hard won due to circumstances outside of Molly and Dario's control.

Wow, just wow. This is what I call a real mafia romance, because... wow (I was left speechless after finishing this book, it seems). There is so much to tell and unpack in this story that I don't know if this is going to be an extremely long review.
Well, I loved the story as you can already imagine by my first sentence. It was a mafia story but with a twist.
Dario is part of the mafia, he's actually the bastard son of the Don and he's happy with the part he plays in the family. He's working under the Don's legitimate son, Riccardo, and his current job is to watch the guy's new toy: Molly.
Molly was a sex worker that Dario picked up in the street for his boss. He was kept in an apartment and provided with everything he wanted, but he was a secret because the Don's son wasn't going to openly admit he was gay. But the guy, let me tell you, was the devil reincarnated.
The main plot revolved around Dario and Molly, and how much they pinned for each other. Sharing an apartment every day made them get close, even though Dario was very annoyed at Molly at first, but the younger guy was so alive that Dario couldn't help but feel attracted to him. They developed a deep connection and feelings for each other. They both were victims of the circumstances and most of the novel is set in the apartment where Molly was placed.
Molly was a wonderful character, sassy and provocative, who thought he didn't deserve a man like Dario. Then Dario was great, possessive and caring, feeling strongly towards Molly. I just loved them both, I think they were wonderful MCs for this story.
I enjoyed it very much, it was very addictive from the beginning and, despite the pining, this book got me hooked because I never knew what the next chapter was going to bring. It was an authentic dark romance and I absolutely loved it.
There was some background plot that involved Dario and some other mafia partners, which I liked because it was a way to introduce the MCs of the next books. Also, it showed how the world of the mob works.
This book was angsty as hell. Molly was hired by Riccardo and he treated him as property, they had sex often and that was something that Dario had to endure because he couldn't do anything about it. There was violence, abuse and drug use, among other stuff, so I recommend anyone reading this book to check the CWs

Dario is the bastard son of a mafia don, and his half brother, the heir to the mafia throne, likes to make it clear that Dario is below him. That’s why he’s got Dario on babysitting duty, watching over his secret lover, Molly. Molly must be kept secret, as a mafia heir couldn’t dare be seen with a man. At first, Dario is exasperated by Molly’s antics and tries to keep him in check, but they soon fall into each other’s orbits, and Dario is willing to do anything to finally make Molly his.

This book has:
-so much pining (like, they can’t even kiss until halfway through the book)
-mafia themes
-bodyguard falling for boss’ kept boy
-toys 👀
-fem MC

I did really enjoy this book for the most part! Though I found there were parts that seemed a little unpolished, the story was a unique twist on the typical mafia romance story. I love a good yearn, and this book delivered! I did also really like Molly!

Definitely will continue this series!

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

This book hit right from the start and I was easily caught up in Molly and Dario’s story. Dario isn’t particularly happy with his life, but he soldiers on in shadow hoping for something better. Dario tries not to resent his half brother, Riccardo, but when Molly enters their lives, that all changes. Dario and Riccardo have a lot of internalized homophobia and Dario is sent to find a boy for Riccardo under the strictest of secrets. Dario immediately feels a pull to Molly and then has to endure months of watching Riccardo abuse Molly.

This is the beginning of a new series that will feature other mafia members introduced here. If you like just a touch of darkness in an emotional romance, check out this new series from Jessica Jackman.

This was kinda a really RAW read 😭

I mean for the first time i want the freaking MC to be more unhinged 🫠🫠 the fact that he was too logical and strategic make me want to pull my hair out 🥲 I can’t brain how he can endure witnessing and letting Molly deal with Rick for that long…. Just as he said he was straight up pimping him out. After witnessing all the pain Molly went through with Rick… i am glad he did slowly fall in love with Molly and want to save him BUT BOY WAS IT HURT TO READ! I mean after nearing the end i kinda understand his side on why he didn’t immediately off Rick… he kinda thought Molly legit a sex worker and did all that gladly without actually hurting his mind & soul…. But what the hell who the hell will be happy and ok with being in that state and having to 24 hours being scared of when it will be happening again 😭😭😭 i glad he automatically off Rick after realizing his stupidity and Molly actually feeling regarding his situation.

My hear went out for Molly the fact he did try to escape but still choose to trust Dairo and went back… always putting himself at risk for protecting Dairo from getting hurt 😭 i am glad he was accepted within the Mafia and found a peace and family with them all ♥️ i was also a bit angry when Dairo have thought on hiding Molly after saving him, basically doing what Rick have been doing ——keeping Molly as the side chick and as a secret. Legit feel like riping his hair out since he also know that Molly would silently complied with what he wanted…..kinda glad he didn’t and give Molly the happiness he deserve 🫶🏼

There are lots of uncomfortable read moment but lots of hot moments too specially when they both getting sneaky with their situation and finally act out their attraction towards each other. Especially the customizing a dildo as a gift and giving it using a coding dialog 👀👀
⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️

I curl in on myself a little more, as if I can make the feeling smaller by shrinking around it. As if I can protect the soft, unraveling thing inside me just by hiding it from the light.
Love. It’s such a simple word. Four letters. People write songs about it, get it tattooed on their skin, say it like it’s a gift or a triumph. But for me, it’s a warning. A risk.

One of my foster mothers once told me, “Love is for people who can afford to fall apart.”

She said it with the same clipped, factual tone she used when explaining how to clean sheets or fake tears. Like it was just another rule of survival. “You want someone too badly, you’ll give them the knife.” “Don’t get attached. Pretty boys don’t stay pretty if they’re stupid.”

I’m never going to take Molly out amongst polite society. He is never going to be on my arm.

To keep him safe, I have to become the Ajello heir. And then the Don. I can’t be gay. Any more than Riccardo can.
Molly is going to be mine. My dirty little secret, hidden away somewhere. Somewhere lovely, but not my official home. He is going to be my mistress, not my wife. It’s not what I want, but it is going to have to do. It’s the best I can offer Molly, and it is a hell of a lot better than what he has now.

Robotically, I begin putting the shopping away. The thing that hurts me the most about the future is that Molly won’t complain. He doesn’t understand his worth. He doesn’t realize he deserves the world. I’m going to treat him horribly, and he will thank me for it.

Then he lowers the sex toy and examines it closely. His finger runs over a vein.

He looks back up at me with dark eyes and flushed cheeks.
All of a sudden, I am both too hot and too cold. I thought I was going to have to give Molly far more clues, but apparently, after only seeing my cock once and having it in his mouth for a measly few minutes, he can recognize it. And that is far more wonderful than words can say.

He hugs the bright pink silicone to his chest and suddenly I’m not sad at all that the company only does garish colors.
“Oh Duckling! This is the best dildo I have ever had! My new favorite!”

My heart skips. Mission accomplished. If Riccardo is watching or somehow listening, he’ll think Molly bought himself a new toy. Only Molly and I know the truth.

“I made a deal with Isabella. She isn’t drugging him anymore.”

Molly’s blue eyes flash at me. Sharp enough to make me recoil. That wasn’t the relief I was hoping to see. The shock of it is enough to steal my breath away.
Molly says nothing. He just gracefully flows to his feet, goes to his room and shuts the door.

I sit motionless on the sofa. The frantic beating of my heart is the only sound. Shit. Molly is right. What was I thinking? I told Isabella not to drug Riccardo, so now he is going to want to fuck Molly.

He is going to want to. And be able to. Because of me.
I suck in a pained breath. It is better than Riccardo losing his temper and killing Molly. I was right about that. I have to hold on to the truth. I am a possessive, jealous asshole, but I want Molly alive. More than anything.

Molly never did lie back and think of England. He didn’t switch his emotions off and send them far away.
His heart is far too big for that. He is far too soft to be ruthless. I don’t think his trade was ever chosen. At least not by him.

He bore it because someone at some point in his life taught him he had to. And nobody ever showed him that things could be different, and maybe for Molly, a boy with nothing and no one, they couldn’t be.
But that doesn’t mean he ever enjoyed selling his body.
No, the sickening, horrifying truth is screaming at me and clawing at my soul.

Molly was always scared.

Every time Riccardo fucked him and I tried not to listen, Molly was on the other side of the wall, scared.
And I allowed it to happen.

4.5 stars. I really didn't expect I'd love this so much, but it was amazing for what it wanted to deliver and it truly accomplished that. I was hooked since the start, it was overall a thrilling mafia book, with the OTT element done right.

The story follows Dario, mafia heir's bodyguard that is assigned to keep a leash on Molly, a sex worker that his boss is obsessed with. Dario's relationship with Molly is explosive, often due to Molly teasing him too much. After time proves that Dario's assumptions of Molly were wrong, he finds himself caring more for him. He can only watch him but never touch, and if his boss ever finds out of his growing feelings the end would easily come for both.

First of all, I have to mention how addictive this book is. From the beginning I felt very into everything that was happening. It has a sort of fast pace, something that usually isn't my thing, but it's reasonable and I think it worked very well for the plot, although I wouldn't have minded more pages.

Another thing I enjoyed were the characters. Molly was an absolute delight, I really like a MC that acts puts up a permanent flirty front as if things didn't affect him when in reality his inner self wants protection. His backstory is hard, and to see him grow more comfortable with Dario was adorable. Molly liking to wear feminine clothes and lingerie was a great addition to his character as well. Now onto Dario, he's the typical LI that stars as narrow minded and then realizes he might be into the other. I like it how it wasn't only lust (those moments where he went crazy over what Molly wore were my fave!) but he genuinely showed he can be caring and put himself in danger if that means protecting the ones he loves.

The chemistry between MCs was another strong point, right there from the start. I loved all the teasing Molly used on Dario, to the point of becoming their inside big joke: Molly always saying something out of pocket vs Dario trying to shut it down. It's funny and it opened the door for them to be closer. I loved how little by little they become vulnerable with each other and it allows Dario realize who Molly truly is underneath his playful facade.

About the elements I enjoyed, I really liked the possessiveness that Dario developed towards Molly and the danger that came from their "forbidden" relationship from more than one angle (the mafia, the homophobia, the boss). It's a push and pull that felt thrilling because anything bad could happen at any moment. I was at the edge of my seat.

Lastly, I think the only thing that I'd give as a constructive opinion is that the last chapters after the climax felt a bit rushed. I would've loved a couple of chapters more in between for the transition to sink in. I still enjoyed it anyway, but I wished for a smoother execution on the final events.

Overall, this was a fun, gritty at times, but exciting ride that developed the mafia theme in a way that worked in favor of the romance. Molly and Dario were an amazing couple, and I'm interested in other books featuring the rest of the cast. It was satisfying from beginning to end and the epilogue gave me exactly what I pictured.

Dario Bianchini is the respected Soldato of the Ajello Family and unrecognized, bastard son of the Don. He is two years older and half-brother to Riccardo, the Capo. Dario is a very serious and stern man and it comes off as being grumpy, but he maintains respect and being feared. He’s been known as the death bringer to many. He puts up with a lot of crap from Riccardo but he tries to keep things calm. Riccardo isn’t very smart, in fact, he’s cruel, twisted, broken and has a mean side to him. He has enemies that want Dario to be the next Don. Being the body guard has had him even kill for Riccardo. Riccardo has reduced him to being a babysitter for his dirty little secret, a male hooker.

Molly, by all rights should be dead by now. He’s enthusiastic, a touch rude, obscenely teasing and flirty. He also crude and little too explicit for Dario. But Molly is living the life for as long as he stays alive. As long as Riccardo keeps shelling out money and giving Molly gifts, he will endure what Riccardo dishes out. He want’s to have fun and freedom but he knows his days are probably numbered. He still feels like a prisoner and he has a secret that he hides. When he crosses the line in Dario’s eyes he gets punished. If Riccardo ever found out about Molly’s little screw-ups that would be the end.

Molly is housed in an apartment, below the London penthouse where Riccardo lives. It’s not a very classy apartment and Dario shares it with Molly. As months pass, time has been grating on his every nerve, that he has to hear and see the abuse that Molly takes from Riccardo. His guilt runs high because he was the one to bring Molly to Riccardo. Now, too much time has passed for Molly and Dario as they learn about each other and their feelings start to grow.

For Dario his situation becomes very serious when the Don Ajello orders him to spy on Riccardo. He has heard the rumors that some say Riccardo isn’t fit to inherit the empire. The Don just want’s enough information on what his son is hiding or planning, so he can stop it before it’s carried out. For Dario, this just adds to the complication of planning a way to save Molly and himself. He calls on his own loyal family to help: Dante, Nicolo who works for Enzo and Carlo. His plan will also include Isabella, the wife of Riccardo. But it’s not as easy to eliminate Riccardo until Dario snaps. Will Riccardo beat him at his dangerous game? What will be the fall-out with the Don if he fails? Most of all will Molly stay by his side or turn away?

Jessica Jackman creates a dark, mafia, erotica, and psychological novel with “He Should Be Mine”. It’s a story of danger, mental and physical abuse, loyalty, guilt and fears. It’s also a story of discovery about ones sexuality. Dario considers himself a straight man but the more he learns about Molly he gradually let’s his true feelings come out. As much as Dario tries to have respect and loyalty for the mafia, he knows what Riccardo is doing is horribly wrong. Molly gives off the false impression, that he doesn’t mind how he’s treated by Riccardo, but Dario starts to see the fear that’s has grown inside Molly.

I liked Dario’s friends: Dante, Nicolo and Carlo. They each have important decisions to make. They show their loyalty and bring a few surprises. It all adds up to: love, family, respect and understanding for all including Dario and Molly.

I’m going to recommend “He Should Be Mine” for those who really get immersed in a variety of emotions and delve deep into the POV’s from the two main characters: Dario and Molly.

I got pulled into this book right away, drawn to the story of Molly and his “rags to riches” move after Dario “found” him for Ricky. He was very street smart and aware of what he was getting into, and threw himself into his role with a believable enthusiasm and contentment with his lot — until he occasionally took off for a night on his own, challenging Dario to find him once he had disabled most of the ways Dario had devised to keep him contained at home or tracked if he got out. Molly was certainly resourceful and intelligent in his boredom with seldom leaving the apartment. And Dario persevered in his bodyguard duties, protecting Molly (and himself), but I felt he was secretly pleased with the challenge Molly presented to keep him on his toes, a break in the monotony of the days spent guarding Molly while maintaining his required distance.

I adored Molly, he came across as so positive and excited to see Ricky when he really wasn’t, but he was able to bluff his way through most of the time. His personal feelings were so rarely apparent, he could mask almost anything. The one thing I wanted to know was what in his background enabled him to present this one front to everyone, no matter how he felt. There were a couple of hints and some guesses from Dario, but Dario never intruded into Molly’s past, so it pretty much stayed hidden. I loved Molly’s enthusiasm with new experiences like the opera, his shopping trips and trying on clothes, the comfort he had in himself to project that persona to the world, the way he accepted the danger, aware he had made the choice to be Rick’s, and the dangers he faced because of that.

Dario deceived himself for quite awhile, but once he finally accepted his attraction to Molly, his caring and compassionate side snuck out once in awhile, breaking free from the controlled mafia persona he had to maintain in his “real life”, but able to explore that other side with Molly. Once he decided he needed to find a way to make Molly his, he was single-minded in his pursuit of his long-term goal, planning meticulously how to accomplish it within this highly traditional and controlled world of the mafia family.

The characters kept me engaged, Dario’s change in attitude and focus toward Molly seemed to develop naturally due to Molly’s endearing personality as well as a bit of too much togetherness in his role as bodyguard, making the attraction almost inevitable. I found the reaction of his fellow mafia conspiracy members to Ricky being gay, and then their reaction to Molly, to be quite interesting, and look forward to learning more about them in successive books. The storyline kept me interested and involved, and I was satisfied with the conclusion. I hope we see more of Molly and Dario in the future books (and maybe get some answers about Molly’s past). If you like mafia stories and adorable twinks in the same setting, I think you would find this one an enjoyable read with something for everyone.

Dario & Molly

Rating: 4 ⭐️

- Sex Worker x Mafia- Soldier
- Forced Proximity
- Possessive/ Protective
- Size Difference
- Extreme Pinning
- Morally Gray Hero

Never have I ever read a book that keeps you on your toes like that.

Every time I turned a page, I didn't know if something sweet, funny, or horrible would happen next....
Okay.

The story follows Dario, the mafia heirs soldier, who is also the mafia dons illegitimate bastard- son.
The mafia heir, Riccardo (or Rick as he likes to call himself), orders him to get him "one of the pretty femme boys."
Unfortunately, he meets Molly. (Well, unfortunate for Molly anyway...)
Molly is pretty, sweet & snarky as hell.

Dario takes Molly "home" to Rick, who keeps the pretty boy locked in an apartment, as his "dirty" little gay secret & orders Dario to stay with Molly.

In the beginning, Dario thinks of himself as Molly's prison guard.
He feels bad for bringing Molly to Riccardo, who keeps using & abusing him, but still manages to rationalize it by telling himself that this is Molly's "work" & the "whore" choose this for himself.

But - while Rick starts to get more & more violent, Dario's view of Molly starts to change, and -

Well.
Read it yourself.

I won't spoiler anymore.

Like I said, this kinda keeps you on your toes the whole time.
You can barely predict what happens next. While outside of Molly's & Dario's bubble, almost nothing is described. It still kept me reading.

Now.
The story was well written, and the plot kept me going.

But.

This could have been so much more.

I wish more of the "sidestories" would have been described, not just implied.

Whenever that happens in a book, it feels rushed.
It's more like a summary of a book rather than the actual book. ( Sorry.)

It happens a lot in romance books, and it always feels like a whole lot of the story is just missing...

Still, this is worth a read & the end is more than satisfying ❤️

And, I'm sad that I have to wait for Nico's story....I wish I could read all four books in one go 😿

4.5! This book was delightful. It is a dark romance as it deals with the Mafia, but it was not so dark that it was more murder than romance. There is a loose theme of captive/jailer, and a lot of Mafia dynamics at play.

The story focuses on Dario's realization that he's in love with his boss's boy, and his plans to get him out and be his. It is a slow burn! The characters cannot act on their attraction due to the current arrangment and so they pine for each other from the same couch. Majority of the book takes place in the apartment where Molly is kept for Riccardo's pleasure while Dario serves as a sort of guard to ensure the privacy of Riccardo's gay affairs, as well as keep Molly from escaping. Dario and Molly are both sweethearts in their own ways and the sublte things they did for each other had me swoony. The scent of the blanket, the pooh bear, they deserved each other and didn't deserve their circumstances.

My favorite part of this book was the palpable tension. The writing was not overly literary by any means but the language used was so immersive. When Molly was anxious, I was anxious. The fact that both characters lived together but couldn't touch each other, I felt the (good) frustration to my core. I was screaming for these characters to be able to simply hug! The emotions it evoked was top tier! You even get a Mafia takeover plot complete with great side characters (future books), and deception and plotting.

There were hints at Molly's backstory and while it wouldn't have added anything to include more details, I found myself wanting a few more details, like where exactly Molly's fear of the dark comes from. Just a personal note.

Took a half star because it did drag a bit for me in the middle. Considering that nothing really happens physically, and all the romance is super subtle so they don't get caught, there was just a lot of the same pining over and over and over. I loved the emotions is evoked, but at some point I wanted something to change and felt myself getting a little bored of the repetition at times. Once it peaked though it was 0-100 with only a few chapters left to real see the together. But the ending was perfect perfect perfect.

I recieved this ARC from BookSirens and this is my honest review.

This book delves into several darker themes, such as abuse and the complexities of being fully dependent on someone else, which can evoke a range of emotions for the reader. The character of Molly is particularly intriguing; he’s portrayed as a very multifaceted person. At first glance, he might seem naive or even rude at times, and there are moments when he comes off as rather childlike. However, as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that deep down, he is a remarkably intelligent man with a profound desire to be loved and accepted.

This book does an excellent job of exploring the multi-dimensional aspects of love, friendship, and family, all set against the backdrop of a mafia lifestyle. The author's depiction of how these relationships function in such a volatile environment adds a layer of intensity to the narrative. Molly’s character is especially noteworthy because he embodies the complexity of wanting love while grappling with the challenges brought on by his circumstances. I found it both fascinating and heart-wrenching to watch him navigate his desires against the realities of his life.

Moreover, Molly’s playful and teasing nature adds a delightful tension to the story. He seems to know what he wants, yet the path to achieving that desire is fraught with obstacles, making the journey all the more engaging. On the other hand, Dario, who initially appears to be a bit of a grump, reveals deeper layers to his character as the story progresses. His steadfast care for Molly and the lengths he goes to protect him show a side of love that is often overlooked—one characterised by quiet strength and unassuming affection.

The small, tender moments where Dario expresses his love for Molly are particularly touching. They illuminate the theme of unconditional love, showcasing how someone can be true to their nature while navigating complex emotions and circumstances. The dynamic between these two characters adds not only depth to the story but also makes the reader root for their relationship.

Overall, this book is a compelling exploration of heavy themes intertwined with heart, humour, and the intricate dance of love in a dangerous world. I found it to be both a thought-provoking and heartwarming read.

4.25 stars - I’m always on the lookout for a dark m/m mafia series so this one grabbed my attention right away. And while I am not generally a fan of flamboyant, effeminate characters, I set that aside to give this one a go. Said character is Molly, the “boy” chosen to sate the gay sex urges of the current mafia heir. He was chosen by Dario, stepbrother and soldato to Riccardo who has been tasked as Molly’s overseer when he isn’t being used by Riccardo.

Molly comes across as confident and flashy with a side of sass and sparkle. He puts on quite the show, but it doesn’t take long before Riccardo’s true cruel nature starts coming out and the cracks begin to surface. Dario is there to pick up the pieces though, and over time, he realizes the only way to keep Molly safe is to get him away from Riccardo. So, he puts a plan in place but there are a lot of cogs to fit together to make it all happen, and that takes time that Molly doesn’t seem to have.

These two play a dangerous game in their respective efforts to placate Riccardo. Often, things go too far and Molly pays the price. It become increasingly more difficult for Dario to be around Molly and keep his distance. Even if the plan works, it seems Molly will remain a dirty secret with an albeit safer jailer. Needless to say, Dario has to walk a pretty fine line. But he manages to put together what seem to be the right allies to accomplish his goals.

This story does get a bit repetitive throughout with the reminders of what these guys are facing, but the story moves along when it needs to. I would have liked to have seen more of Molly’s true self, especially through Dario’s eyes, which we caught glimpses of throughout. All in all though, I was turning pages to see how it would all play out, and I wasn’t quite ready for it to end. I was excited to see the next books are about the other allies, Nicolo, Carlo and Dante, who helped Dario via various agreements to play a part in the end result and I’m looking forward to seeing this story continue.

Dark. Gritty. Addictive. This book grabbed me and didn’t let go.

Dario is the feared, respected Soldato of the Ajello Family, the bastard son of the Don and half-brother to Riccardo, the cruel, unhinged heir. Cold, grumpy, and known as the “death bringer,” Dario’s life is bound by loyalty and violence. But his world tilts when he’s ordered to guard Molly, Riccardo’s hidden secret: a sunshiny, femme sex worker who survives by enduring Riccardo’s abuse and playing along for gifts, money, and survival.

Molly is bold, flirty, and teasing on the surface, but beneath the glitter and bravado is a deeply intelligent man aching for love and freedom. He’s a prisoner dressed up in pretty clothes. Watching Dario slowly unravel as he sees Molly’s pain and realises he wants to protect him, was both heartbreaking and beautiful.

The tension between them is constant: forced proximity, cameras watching their every move, danger at every corner. The pining is brutal, but also delicious. Their banter, stolen moments, and the slow realisation of what they mean to each other made me devour every page.

What really stood out for me is how layered both characters are. Molly isn’t just sunshine and sass, he’s complex, vulnerable, and stronger than anyone gives him credit for. And Dario, the grumpy, stoic soldier, reveals a quiet, protective love that’s powerful in its restraint. Together they’re combustible, equal parts messy, dangerous, and perfect for each other.

Tropes & Vibes
✨ Sex worker x Mafia soldier
✨ Grumpy x Sunshine
✨ Forced proximity
✨ Possessive/protective MMC
✨ Size difference
✨ Extreme pining
✨ Dark, psychological themes

This is not a light read, it digs into abuse, power, loyalty, and identity with unflinching honesty. But it’s also about love in the darkest of places, and how two broken people can still find something real.

I was completely invested from beginning to end. Jessica Jackman has created a dark, mafia romance full of grit, heart, and unforgettable characters. Highly recommend if you love your romance with sharp edges.

HE SHOULD BE MINE is a dark mafia, grumpy sunshine, opposites attract romance.

Molly is a sex worker and he's been given to Riccardo has his new boy. Riccardo has to hide Molly away from the rest of the world. He can't let anyone know that he's gay. So he has is capo Dario stay and watch Molly a few floors down from the apartment Riccardo shares with his wife. Molly is a sunshiny femme that likes looking pretty even if it's to do something he doesn't want to do. But he can't be mad at the gifts and money he's getting.

Dario works under Riccardo and has to do what he says. He is the one that found Molly for Riccardo and now hates himself for doing that. He hates everything about babysitting Molly but something slowly starts to grow on Dario and Dario doesn't understand why. The attraction seems to grow out of nowhere for him but he doesn't really question it. Dario gets to see the real parts of Molly. The comfortable clothes eyeglass wearing Molly. The more real they get with each other the more Dario hates listening and seeing the mask Molly puts on when Riccardo walks in. Riccardo gets more and more abusive with Molly and Dario will take out anyone he has to to take care of him.

It was hard seeing Dario's reactions to how Riccardo was treating Molly when he couldn't do anything about it. The pining in this one is a plot line of it's own. They want each other but they can't do anything about it while there are cameras on them all the time. So while they are pinning for each other they get to know each other. They talk and banter and build a foundation of whatever it is between them that could possibly be more.

This is a new to me author and I must I was completely invested in this story the entire time. I had to know what was going to happen next and couldn't put it down.

I was given a free copy of this book to read and review by Gay Romance Reviews.

First Time Reading a MM Gay Romance and it's also my first ARC.

I’ll start this review with complete honesty—this was my first time reading a MM (male/male) romance novel. It’s not a trope or subgenre I usually gravitate toward, but I picked up this book with an open mind and a genuine curiosity to experience something different. And to my surprise, the story held more emotional depth and connection than I anticipated.

What immediately struck me was how well the plot was constructed. The pacing was consistent, and there was a clear emotional arc that didn’t feel rushed or overdone. Even though the romantic dynamics were new to me, the themes of love, longing, trust, and vulnerability are universal. The characters were written with such care that I didn’t need to relate to their experiences personally to feel their struggles and happiness deeply. The chemistry between the two leads was believable, well-developed, and built gradually.

One of the strongest aspects of the book was the emotional tension—how the author didn’t just rely on romance tropes but created a bond that felt earned. I found myself invested in the characters’ individual journeys as much as their love story.

While I can’t say I connected with every aspect—mainly because I’m still learning to understand the dynamics in MM romance—I can say the writing pulled me in. I never felt disconnected, even though the story wasn’t in my usual comfort zone. That says a lot about the strength of the storytelling.

If you’re someone who enjoys MM romance with emotionally rich love stories with flawed but lovable characters and a plot that keeps you turning the pages, this book is definitely worth picking up.

Yes, yes, yes — this is exactly the type of mafia romance we crave! I usually tread carefully with books in this subgenre, because so many don’t feel authentic, but Jessica Jackman absolutely nailed it. With He Should Be Mine, she’s earned me as a loyal reader.

What I loved most is that Jackman doesn’t rely on mindless killing scenes just for shock value. Even when the story sets up moments where brutality could have been shown, the author fades to black. Personally, I wouldn’t have minded a few more vivid breakdown-and-rebuild moments, but honestly that’s nitpicking — because the tension and emotion were already powerful.

The dynamic between Molly and his captor Dario is dangerously addictive. They know that the other could cost them their life, but instead of hostility, what emerges is a twisted, fascinating care. Dario punishes Molly when he has to, but you can feel how much it tears him apart inside. That contradiction — merciless yet protective — is what made him so compelling. And the scene where Dario feels the urge to kill his boss but reins himself in to act methodically? Brilliant. Finally, a mafia romance where brains, not just blood, drive the narrative.

Best of all, Dario doesn’t pretend to be good. He’s painfully aware of the horrible things he does to Molly, but he’s laser-focused on his end goal: a better future for both of them. That honesty, combined with the slow-burning intensity of their relationship, made this story unforgettable.

He Should Be Mine is mafia romance done right — dangerous, emotional, and authentic. I can’t recommend it enough to anyone who loves this trope.

Dario & Molly… heaven & hell—and I loved every second of it!

It’s been over a decade since a book made me literally leap out of my chair with joy, but this one did it. I read a lot of stories I enjoy, but it’s rare that something makes me drop my iPad and cheer out loud from sheer excitement. This book gave me that moment.

On the surface, it’s a familiar setup: hot Italian mafia enforcer meets sweet, fiery rent boy. But the difference here is in the execution—Jackson simply writes it better. You care about the characters. Dario is pure walking sin, yet conflicted, trapped within the hierarchy of his world and forced to rely on his intelligence as much as his strength. And by contrast, there’s Molly—a sweet tender cinnamon bun with a streak of fire and the brightest smile you can imagine. Their connection is compelling and heartfelt, and I found myself fiercely protective of them both. I wanted to go to war for Molly, to tear apart anyone who dared to break his spirit. The emotional weight of this story had me completely wrapped up.

And here’s the best part: Jackson doesn’t just promise darkness—she delivers it. So many “dark romances” pull back right when things should hit hardest, but not here. The raw, painful moments are gut-wrenching, like watching a puppy get kicked, and they make the triumphs that much sweeter. It’s brutal at times, but it feels real. And through it all, Dario is Molly’s protector, fighting like hell to shield him. If anyone deserves happiness at the end of all that pain, it’s Molly.

This was everything I want in a dark romance—intense, emotional, and unforgettable. Five stars, without hesitation. Highly recommended.
