Rogue Riders Duet #2

Twisted Trails

Rate this book
I was supposed to race, take the win, and disappear before the truth caught up to me. But pain doesn’t let go—not when your lungs burn, your body won’t heal, and the pills barely keep you upright.

I crashed again.
And the mask came off.

Now, the people I was never meant to trust know exactly who I am.
What I’ve done.
What I still intend to finish.

They weren’t supposed to see me.
Not the man chasing redemption.
Not the one with too much charm and too many secrets.
And definitely not the forbidden fruit I’ve wanted from the beginning—the one I should have stayed far away from.

But I never expected the fallout.

The truth is out, and the people I tried to keep at arm’s length know everything.
They see the cracks in my armor, the scars I tried to bury, the girl beneath the lies—and they’re not walking away. The lines are blurred, and every choice feels like its own kind of loss.

I finally have something worth saving...
But I lit the fuse, and now I have to watch it burn.

Twisted Trails is a slow burn, instant spark, spicy, hurt/comfort, MMFM, why choose romance. It’s the second book in the Rogue Riders Duet and is not a standalone. For mature readers.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️....📚'𝙼𝚈 𝚁𝙴𝚅𝙸𝙴𝚆 𝙰𝙽𝙳 𝙾𝚃𝙷𝙴𝚁𝚂'📚 can also be found on my blog: ╰┈➤KITTY KATS CRAZY ABOUT BOOKS

❀⋆.ೃ࿔* TWISTED TRAILS°❀⋆.ೃ࿔* Is the second full length why choose sports romance book in the (Rogue Riders) duet by new to me author Blake Black..This picks up where the previous book left off. And all the lies get revealed..

Back to back baby, I'd just fallen over that cliffy in the previous book and this one will pull me over it, I really enjoyed the first book, the character building, the sizzling attraction, the brothers best friend trope, the hidden identity cast that hook and it pulled me in.

☀︎ Reverse harem (why choose)
☀︎ Sports romance
☀︎ Hidden identity
☀︎ Found family
☀︎ Bi awakening

This went up a notch or two from the previous book, the heat factor was off the scales, the emotional turmoil this wrung out of me, like a yo-yo this author pulled at my heartstrings. There’s not a thing I would change about this book, this series, from front to back I loved every second, minute, hours I spent devouring it. I’m definitely going to try others by this author.

(“ She lied to the UCI, and she didn't tell us why that is. But she was real with me. Yeah maybe she didn't tell us she doesn't have a dick and gave me a full-blown sexuality crisis.”) -Luc

Alaina was such a fiesty strong relatable character, you couldn't help but be drawn to her, her revenge ran deep within her soul, but when it came to the crunch living ran deeper. I loved that for her. Her growth and strength shrone through every aspect of her being. That strong sibling bond had me by the heart from the get go. Dane was more of a father figure than her own father, but I'm glad her father slowly stepped up to the plate in the end. This book ticked so many boxes.

I loved the storyline, the boys, our feisty heroine, leaving me with a bittersweet feeling as I closed out of that last page. I can't even say I had a favourite out of the boys, they were all perfection in their own ways. It just worked.. 65451226-2019570151487824-6157464638251335680-n

Absolute perfection. I love, love, LOVE this duet.

As someone who suffers from chronic pain, this showcases chronic pain, the physical and the mental toll it can take on someone so well. This story is so amazing, so beautifully written that I wish I could read it again for the first time.

I loved the downhill mountain bikind aspect. It's a sport that I've yet to see in the sports romance category and it was so FUN. We have Mr Black to thank for that.

Alaina was such a great and relatable character. She suffers so much and hates the world but bit by bit, piece by piece, she finds herself again along with the will to keep going. To want to keep going. Despite her crash at the end of book one, she refuses to stay down. To give up. Only this time, she's racing for herself.

"Anything else you want to tell the MTB world while I've got them all listening?"
"Sure. Remember how I won Leogang this season? How I was faster than every man who's
ever raced that course? ... Just wanted you all to know I did that on my period."

Every single character in this is so amazing. I loved them. All of them. Even the rat, hahaha.

Dane is the best brother you'd ever want. Luc is adorable and unconditionally loyal. Mason has such a pure heart, despite what happened to him he never lost that. Finn f*cked up, but he also stepped up. He goes above and beyond for everyone to fix things.

"Luc Delacroix. The human version of a sugar crash

I can’t wait to see what you have install for us next BB.

AHH! What a great conclusion! We pick up right where we left off in the first book, and my god! The hurt! The comfort! The journeys that each of these characters goes through are handled so well. The healing, the growth, the twists. JUST. SO. GOOD.

This is one of her best yet. Each one of Blake Black's books just gets better and better.

--- Quick fact ---
* Contemporary Why Choose (MMFM)
* Bi-awakening (which was handled well, in my opinion) and bisexuality
* Fantastic nicknames for the FMC
* Dirt bike racing and it's awesome
* Trigger: As always, check the triggers for yourself, yet I did want to call out suicide ideation.

God it’s like Blake loves to rip my heart out with her duets and this one is no different! It’s angsty and emotional and just everything you want and then some, honestly all of her duets are so emotional and amazing and just overall perfect!
I’ve been sitting on this for a while because I still don’t have the words to properly review this book/duet, because it’s emotional and OH SO AMAZING!
Alaina is so amazing and broken (especially in the beginning) and seeing her get her HEA and working to heal (cuz let’s face it it’s hard) was everything I needed and then some.
Luc, Mason, and Finn are the best guys for her all around and they each give her a little something she needs to survive!
And of course because it’s Blake she gives us an amazing found family full of side characters that we fall in love with.

At this point I’ve read ALL of Blake’s book and I routinely reread them because they are always just perfect, so I’m not surprised to have another perfect duet from her.

🎶 “My baby's fit like a daydream. Walkin' with his head down, I'm the one he's walkin' to” 🎶

Alaina (h) was supposed to race, win, and disappear before the truth could catch up to her. But when another crash exposes the identity she’s spent years hiding, the people she was never meant to trust see everything—the pain, the secrets, and the forbidden desires she’s tried to bury. Redemption was never part of her plan, but neither was falling for the ones determined to stand by her when her world starts to burn. As her lies unravel and the fallout closes in, Alaina must decide if saving what she’s built is worth losing herself all over again.

—*•.¸♡ ★·.·☾ ゚。´THOUGHTS゚☁︎。`·.·★ ♡¸.•*⋆—

[Finn]

“You mean it?” My voice is barely a whisper as I push up to see his face.

His brow pulls together as he brushes a damp strand of hair from my forehead. “Mean what, baby girl?”

“That you love me.”

“Yeah.” I hold my breath as his eyes warm into adoration. “I love you, Alaina.”

Finn’s development didn’t really come into play until about 73% into the book, and that’s when things started feeling heavier. Her dreams were falling apart, her identity was about to be revealed, and her fingers were still injured from the accident that, technically, he was to blame for. He carried that guilt and felt responsible for putting her in a position where she couldn’t chase her dreams anymore, all because he told her being with her was a mistake. He didn’t know how to prove that he genuinely loved her because she didn’t believe him. She thought their story was over, and that what he said was just words. So he had to show her. Giving up his racing career was the proof. That was what mattered most to him, and sacrificing it showed her how serious he was. That’s his love language, and honestly, I love that about Finn. He was all in. It didn’t matter that sharing her would be uncomfortable for him because, deep down, he just wanted her. As long as he had a part of her, that was enough. That kind of quiet acceptance felt beautiful in its own way. The fact that he even built a prototype so she could race again and was so attentive to her needs showed how much he truly cared. Finn really proved he could be a solid, steady person in her life, and the way she was patient and understanding with Marcus and Luc just made everything feel balanced and sweet 🥺💗💌🤍.

[Luc]

Everything else, every worry disappears, because there’s only him and me under the stars, wrapped in lavender, and only the sky to bear witness.

He kisses me again and again as if every press of his mouth is a vow. “Je t’aime, ma Petite.”

His backstory broke me. His dad committed suicide, and she once wanted to do the same, but his mom stepped in and connected her with a therapist. This family, honestly. He was patient with her, gentle, and showed her what her first time should’ve been like. He even used protection when she told him she couldn’t get pregnant and said he didn’t want to risk her safety 🥹. He’s so perfect 💌💖❤️💓🤍. He was a little upset that she hadn’t told him the truth at first, but he quickly let it go once he realized there was more to the story. He knew she probably had her reasons, so he was the one pushing everyone to actually understand instead of jumping to conclusions. That felt special because most people in these kinds of stories just start throwing accusations and fall apart over miscommunication, but he didn’t. He stayed calm, patient, and supportive. He even took her in with his mom, and together they gave her the kind of love and support she never had. She finally felt like she had a family and a partner she could count on. He was also really open about wanting to be with both her and Mason. She cared for them both, and he didn’t fight it - he embraced it. He and Mason were together first officially, but he wanted all of them to be happy together. He was basically the matchmaker because he just wanted love and peace between them, and that’s exactly what we got.

[Mason]

My nobody who sees my cracks and calls them beautiful.

His eyes flick down, tracing the length of me. “Shite. You’re so damn beautiful.”

I almost laugh at his hoarse words, at how in sync we are without him realizing it.

Mason not reacting well to finding out the truth and feeling lied to because she was the person he opened up to and confided in with things he had never shared before 🥺 my boy. He was genuinely hurt and betrayed that she hadn’t told him the truth. He felt like everyone, especially women - had lied to him, and this time he really believed things were different. He had shared so much of himself, been so honest and vulnerable, and realizing she’d been lying about her identity the whole time crushed him. What really changed things was when he talked to his dad. His dad told him not to be the one throwing accusations or shutting people down without giving them a chance to explain, especially since no one ever gave him that grace after the rape allegations. That conversation shifted everything for Mason. He went to apologize and gave her the space to tell her side of the story. He wasn’t fully back in with her yet, even though he wanted to be, but he was all in with Luc. The relationship between Mason and Luc actually developed first, even though Luc was already with Alaina. They basically became a polycule - each couple connected in their own way but still part of the same relationship. Luc really wanted all of them to be together, but Alaina wasn’t honest about her feelings for Mason because she was scared of rejection. Mason thought she didn’t want him, so he tried to act oblivious even though it was obvious everyone had feelings for each other. Meanwhile, Luc was the one quietly pushing for them all to connect. These dynamics worked so well because Mason’s personality really started to shine again. He was slowly rebuilding his confidence and finally finding peace with the people he loved. He stopped caring what anyone thought because he realized that being known—truly known—by the people who mattered was enough. That’s all he ever wanted, and that’s all I wanted for him too. Mason made sure Alaina never felt left out 💗💖🤍💌💘. He treated them both equally, loved them both fully. Her nobody. Her everything.

[Luc & Mason]

“Didn’t think about it much growing up. Honestly, before Petite, I thought I was straight or straight enough.”

Ah. My stomach dips. There it is. “And now?”

“Now I already handed in my straight card for her,” he says with a breathy laugh that’s more tender.

These two are so, so, so cute and I love them 💌💗😭🤍. I love that they built their own relationship and made it work within the larger dynamic. They were able to coexist with Alaina, but also had something beautiful just between the two of them. It wasn’t only about the group connection—they had something real on their own too. Mason and Luc both felt so much, not just for her but for each other as individuals, and that’s what made it so special 🤍💓💌💗

. Their relationship felt genuine because it was built on patience and understanding. Mason was so patient, and Luc was too, especially since he had never been with a guy before. It was full of learning moments, with everyone figuring things out together and learning how to love and be happy as a unit. It was especially sweet seeing Luc explore his sexuality and grow more comfortable with it, and Mason was the perfect person for him through that. He was calm, kind, and patient in a way Luc really needed 💗🤍💖💌🤍💓. That’s what made their bond so beautiful to me.

—*•.¸♡ ★·.·☾ ゚。´OVERALL゚☁︎。`·.·★ ♡¸.•*⋆—

Alaina getting to race in the elite division and actually winning made me so happy 🥹. Seeing her finally let go of revenge and find peace with the team gave the story such a satisfying closure. I feel really content with the ending. I’m going to miss them, especially because they felt like this chill, found-family type of group, but they all got what they came for. She just wanted to live again, and that’s exactly what she did. That’s all we could ever ask for. And for Dane, who had carried so much guilt and responsibility for her life this whole time, she finally gave him something he desperately needed—hope. She showed him it was okay to move on, to find peace, maybe even to find someone of his own. He didn’t have to carry everything by himself anymore because she had three other people who loved her and helped take care of her too.

Twisted Trails picks up after Aliana’s crash and Luc and Mason find out her secret. Even in her drugged addled state in the hospital she knows the fallout will wreck the fragile relationships she started to build with them. Mason struggles the most because he had shared more with Alaina than anyone and she didn’t tell him her secret. I love Mason’s dad and how he sets him straight. Luc, is unwavering in his feelings for Alaina. He is there for her when she breaks down and helps bring Mason and Finn around to the idea of their relationship. Alaina broke a few fingers in the crash and its affecting how she can grip the handle bars and her ability to ride. She already knows she can’t win the overall, but she fears this is the end of her season. Finn comes through for her with a new glove and handle bar grip he made for her. For the first time in 7 years, Alaina isn’t consumed with winning and revenge, she’s found a happiness she didn’t think was possible with her men. The spice is kicked up to 11 and scorched the pages. Aliana’s struggles aren’t glossed over. We see how she works for what she wants and that’s a life with her crazy men after racing. She is able to heal with help of the relationships she makes. The banter is fun and adds lightess to a story that delves into difficult topics. Blake’s ability to blend truama, love, and a high dose spice creates a story that will have you all up in your feels.

“He’s a f*€king menace wrapped in French charm and infuriatingly good hair.

“But yeah, trees? We’re done. Tree-huggers don’t know sh*t. I’m officially a tree-hater. A bark-phobe. A foliage foe. If I see one more pine needle, I’m going to scream.”

“I’d rather share her heart than watch it stop beating.”

“This is about trust, choice, and not being afraid of love just because it doesn’t look like everyone else’s.”

“Straight card revoked, gay panic initiated, and here I am with front row seats to the Luc Delacroix bisexual awakening. Yeah. I can absolutely work with that.”

“When they finally break apart, Luc kisses me hard without warning. I taste myself, I taste Mason, and I moan into his mouth, tasting us.”

“Getting split open by Mason Payne? That’s a fucking experience I’d love to repeat, even if I couldn’t sit right the next day.”

Bury me with this duet.

That’s it. That’s the review.

In all seriousness I keep thinking I’ve found my favorite duet Blake’s written and each time she writes another book it becomes my new favorite. This one was everything, emotional, heartbreaking, healing, loving, really just everything!

Please just do yourself the biggest bestest favor and read this duet.

Jumped right into top place

I thought i was in a reading slump, but this book got me over that hurdle

This book is definitely going to become a comfort book going forward. The slow burn ramping up in the book was the sweet spot that sealed the deal on a new favourite duet.

Alaina is starting to look forward instead of back, Mason starts to let himself hope , Finn growing a pair, Luc... et bien c'est Luc, rien d'autre a dire 🤣

Also Toulouse, as someone who had a mild phobia of rats as a teenager after reading the Rats at 12, he is sooo adorable 😍

The story, the characters and spice is top notch - 20/10 would recommend 👌🏼

I don't say this a lot, and I don't say this easily. But this book is the prefect wrap up for the duology.
The character growth in this duology is so awesome to follow and the characters themselves are just as flawed and still awesome as you and me, these books show mental health so profoundly realistic, with all their ups and downs that it impossible not to feel anything for these characters.
I don't know how Blake does it, but her duologies keep getting better.

Thank you

I sobbed, I laughed, I raged, and I yearned for the same taste of justice Alaina craved.

This book is already a fantastic read.
But as someone who has struggled with that desperate desire to just stop. No more pain. No more heart ache. No more spirals. No more tears.
This book makes me feel seen and it might have healed a small part of me on the way.

I only have one complaint, and Im hoping I just missed it thru the teary eyes.
Where's her fucking flower crown?!

So much better than the first book. I loved the camaraderie in this book, the team aspect, the fact that they won't let anyone down! It was wonderful, heartfelt and swoon worthy. I didn't even mind the MM dynamic in this. Blake Black writes with so much depth, drawing out the heartache, the joy, and everything in between with every sentence and chapter she writes. So far she is 2 for 2 in the duets I have read from her. I also love how this last book wasn't all spicy but held a story.

There's a huge miscommunication/misunderstanding that never gets resolved, or I missed it. In general, I really enjoyed the book, and the epilogues are satisfying. I honestly think it would've been better if the brother's best friend was left behind LOL

Beautiful! So much to overcome but I’m so happy with how it ended for each and every character. This series had so many hilarious parts too despite being so heavy on the emotions and the perfect amount of “Delacroix chaos”.

This duet was incredible!! The growth Alaina goes through in the second half is amazing. Not only her, but her guys as well. Mason especially. I loved how Luc was the mushy marshmallow glue that helped pulled everyone together. And the fact that Isaac said what he said and did what he did?!! Unbelievable! This is a definite reread for me! Highly recommend.

This is going to be a quick little review for the duology because I didn't do them individually.

I really fucking enjoyed this duet. It perfectly gave me the angst and turmoil that I always want with the secret girl trope, and it lasted more than two chapters, which is a huge plus because I typically always feel cheated when other books put it in there, but it lasts for a blink. This duet had me feeling ALL THE FEELS ALL THE TIME. I laughed out loud irl, I swooned, I kicked my feet and flailed, I choked back tears, and swallowed some rage, and everything else in between. I loved watching these characters fall for each other and seeing them get a HEA.

If I had one little gripe, it would be that every single time that characters had a chance for discussion or deeper dialogue, there was an interruption or complete avoidance. Some of which I thought maybe were postponed to carry toward later and a bigger reveal, but it was just dropped altogether. But that was my only real issue with any of it.

This will definitely be a duet and characters that I'll want to reread and visit again and again. Love them!

Oh my god, I loved this book so much!!!
The way it picks up right after that cliffhanger and keeps building with such perfect pacing until that spectacular ending — absolutely amazing! This duet has easily become one of my all-time favorites; it’s so original, emotional, and beautifully written from start to finish.
What I loved the most was the incredible growth each of the characters goes through. Especially Alaina — you can feel how much she’s changed, going from someone ready to give up to an unstoppable force of nature who finally realizes she wants to live, to love, and to be surrounded by the people who make her feel safe and cherished. I also adored that she recognized she needed help and had the courage to accept it (and can we talk about Luc’s mom? I love that woman!).
It was both emotional and heartwarming to see the relationships develop — not only between Luc and Mason, but also between Mason and Alaina and Finn and Alaina. Their dynamics felt so real and authentic, especially between Mason and Luc as they navigate Mason’s realization about his sexuality with such care and patience.
Finn finally understands his mistakes, and the way he tries to make things right completely melted my heart. Together, the three of them truly feel like a family — and that includes Mason’s dad (someone please give that man a medal!) and Alaina’s brother, whose bond with her was just so touching and real.
And of course… the little rats! They’re part of the family too, and honestly, they made everything even cuter and more wholesome.

"Maybe love doesn't have to pick sides."

Wow! This book was fantastic. The emotions, the characters, the races, and especially those group scenes.

"This is the only thing tethering her to this world. The World Cup, the revenge, and her friends. And I'm not letting you take that from her, not when it might be the only thing keeping her alive."

I love the way everything works out. I was honestly so pleasantly surprised by how everything came about. It may not have been as she planned but it was so much better.

"Luc Delacroix. The human version of a sugar crash." He may be chaotic, crazy, and loud but he also sees what everyone needs. He is unapologetically himself and would do anything for his people.

"This is Mason. My nobody who sees my cracks and calls them beautiful." Mason has been through so much but he fought tooth and nail to succeed even against all odds. His strength is amazing.

Finn Greer had to earn his way back into Alaina's good graces. When it comes down to making a choice he knows what he needs to do. "Like I told her. I love her, and I want her. I'll support her. No matter what or who she wants."

"This sport isn't supposed to be a team sport." I glance toward my dad again, now flanked by Otis, Dane, and Piper, with Toulouse on her shoulder, all of them smiling at me. "But the best people make it one."

Blake is fantastic at writing stories that are believable, emotional, awkward, and spicy. I absolutely loved that she added MM to this one.

Another favorite from Blake!! I absolutely love that all her duets are relatively the same in relation and temperature (darkish, why choose romance and slow-medium spice), but all her duets are so unique from each other! From dancing, mountain biking, ghosts and AI; you never know where she’ll take you next! I honestly dragged this one out as much as I could! This is book two of the Rouge Riders Duet, book one is Broken Breath. I can say too much about the plot of this one, since it’s book two, but my goodness was it good! This duet is about Alaina (Allen), our FMC that is out for revenge, after her brother’s competitor sabotaged her bike seven years ago, that led to her body and life to be completely shattered. She’s back after intensive surgeries and training, but she’s not back as Alaina, but as Allen, to reclaim her title and ruin the one that shattered everything. But she didn’t see them coming: the French flirt, the brooding bad boy, and her brother’s best friend. Now she has to try and mask herself and her feelings, or all her plans of revenge will come tumbling down. I can’t wait for where ever Blake takes us next!

I can’t explain how happy this duet made me. I started with Broken Breath and then basically inhaled 2 of her other duets while I waited for this to be released.
This one’s my favorite. The depiction of chronic pain, the competitive sport aspect, the revenge arc, the HEALING everyone goes through. It just all goes so well together.
The MMCs are different and unique, and I LOVE the rest of the supporting characters and how fleshed out they are.
As a British-American person who also speaks some french due to having lived in Switzerland, the author got a lot of things right here culturally and linguistically, and nothing ever pulled me out of the story due to inaccuracy.
The writing is probably her best yet, and I cannot wait to see what we will get from her in the future. In the meantime, I will be rereading this duet regularly, just like how I reread the first part 2x more while waiting for this.
I’ve described the story to my friends by going “it’s basically if you combined count of monte cristo with mulan and she’s the man with downhill mountain biking. With a lot of boyfriends and none of the drama of needing to choose (this healed my trauma from TSITP this summer, I swear).
All in all, just a fantastic, fun, and fairly spicy read with enough emotions to pull at your heartstrings in a good way and leave you satisfied and happy at the end.

Emotional from start to finish. This book picks up right from the end of book one. There is so much heart ache and sadness. Mason feels betrayed. Luc knows there must be a reason and hangs around for the answer. Finn blames himself and so does Alaina.

Can they find their way past this and through their own issues. This book deals very heavily with mental health and daily struggles. It touches on never ending pain, the pain of losing someone close to you, the not wanting to live. All of it is discussed and it leads to very powerful emotions and connections.

I cried. I laughed. I cried some more. Everyone in this book had depth and pain. Each was unique. But the coming together and learning to lean on one another and building a family, it made sure no one was alone with their pain.

I loved this book wholeheartedly. I enjoyed that it was long enough to take time to develop all the relationships thoroughly. And didn’t just rush past important steps. It was truly an amazing conclusion for this duet.

I received an ARC for free. I am voluntarily leaving this review.

Quite enjoyed this duet as whole. This was her coming back from breaking her fingers and trying to figure out how to ride. How to navigate with luc and mason. But also trying to either forgive or move on from Finn. Luc mom steps in half way after Dane is honest about their promise and how he can’t hold it in and she gets her help. They all start healing each other Finn quits riding and starts to figure out juniors with Dane and they go to their dad and get funding to start their own. Alaina outs herself to Issac and gets disqualified. Issac and isla say she did all the things and remove themselves. Mason wins. The epilogues are actually story driven not meeps. Loved this duet first read from author and big fan. Plot and story line were huge and impactful but not overdrawn and repetitive. Spice was mostly in this book and was original. Big fan. Loved new sport to read about and not just hockey book with one scene that doesn’t make sense. Well done.
