At Velvet, I wear the mask.
I hold the whip.
And men kneel.

It’s the only place I’m in control—away from my father’s iron rule, away from the perfect daughter mask he forces me to wear. Every Friday night, I slip into the shadows of the city’s most exclusive club and become someone else. Powerful. Untouchable. Free.

Until him.

He was supposed to be a one-night scene. A spoiled rich boy chained to my cross, begging for more. I gave him his release and sent him on his way. I thought I’d never see him again.

I was wrong.

Because on Monday, he walks into my lecture hall. Professor Ahms’ newest student.
And that night? He’s sitting at my father’s dinner table—smirking like the devil while his mother clings to my father’s arm.

He knows who I am.
He knows what I do.
And he wants to own me with my own secrets.

But I don’t bow. I don’t break.
And when I call in my favorite clients—the men who already crave me, protect me, worship me—he’s about to learn exactly why I never lose control.

My name is Penelope Grace.
And this is a game he’ll regret playing.

The Blackmail by Cassie Lein

Between 3.5 and 4-ish stars

Uhm. Where to begin. The Blackmail is overall a fun book. But I know that recently I have been drifting away from why-choose romances. And I didn't expect this book to be a why-choose romance. I thought she would end up with Talon in the end. The blurb heavily focuses on him and her and I did not expect chapters through the eyes of other characters beside the two of them. It truly is a polyamory relationship type of book. And just because I am not enjoying those types of books anymore, doesn't mean I am giving this book a needlessly low grading. I really tried to read this book as open-minded as I could. And as a why-choose romance it's a solid one. So if you love that trope, then definitely pick this one up. I'm sure you will love it way more than I did.

The book starts with Penelope planning a date with her boyfriend Gideon. She is on her way to the Velvet House where she is a dominatrix. She has a passionate encounter with Silas and he is her other boyfriend. She goes on that date with Gideon, spends the night with him, and returns to work at the Velvet House. She has an appointment with a 19 year-old man who wants to be dominated for the first time. Talon is mesmerized by her and even though they don't have sex they both get off.

Penelope's day to day job is that she is a teaching assistant to a professor at school. And when school starts again Talon walks into her classroom. He instantly lets her know he wants more. He threatens to out her if she doesn't go out on a date with him. But you kinda instantly know it's playful. Yes, he doesn't express himself properly and he should accept her answer. But they both like bantering about it.

Things get even more spicy when Talon turns out to be the son of the woman her father is dating. And both Gideon and Silas want something permanent with her.

And slowly but surely the four of them find out that Talon's mother Abi is hiding something and suddenly things get even more complicated. That was my favorite part about this book. I loved the whole storyline surrounding Minxy (Talon's sister). My heart broke for both kids and this storyline really pushed the story forwards.

While it is overall a fun book, it did not steal my heart. Not because of the why-choose trope. But because I really missed a spark. Talon is very immature and he doesn't carry a presence around him that makes you fall in love with him. Both Gideon and Silas are super, super, super respectful. There isn't any angst in this book whatsoever. It's all lovey dovey and a sweetness overload. It's all done by the book and every i is dotted in the book of how to treat each other respectfully. While I get that that is a huge plus, and I admire Cassie for it, it just lacked that spicy, engaging and extremely hot interaction. Penelope didn't feel like a dominatrix. She was way too sweet and kind and I just missed that the boys/men truly ignited her. The after you, no after you vibe killed the spiciness a bit.

I did love that Penelope isn't hiding anything towards any of the men. She doesn't lead them on. She instantly says what is going on and repeats certain things so everyone knows what is going on and what she wants and needs. So that was a plus. I just wish one of the men was a bit of a caveman to elevate the book to the next level.

And the storyline beside the polyamory relationship really makes this book interesting to read. It wasn't believable on all fronts, but I didn't mind that, it was engaging and I loved Minxy way before we first meet her.

So between 3.5 and 4-ish stars overall from me for The Blackmail.

A little forbidden fruit! Penelope wears multiple hats… TA, submissive and Domme. Silas and Gideon are members at Velvet along with Penelope. But when Talon enter the picture things get complicated. He’s her student and something a little more family oriented. The storyline was very interesting and will keep you hooked until the very end!

Penelope is a teacher’s assistant who, on weekends, is a regular at a sex/kink club — where she met two of her boyfriends, Silas and Gideon. One night she accepts a request for a scene from a new dom, Talon… only to walk into class Monday and find him sitting there as her student. And if that isn’t messy enough, one brunch reveals he’s about to become her stepbrother. Talon is relentless in pursuing her, but she already has two partners who ground her, support her, and would burn the world for her. Meanwhile, Talon’s mother is hiding a secret that ties all their lives together.

I really enjoyed this. I love how Silas and Gideon center Penelope — how she can be her own person, her own dom, while Talon brings a different kind of chaotic devotion into the dynamic. All three men show real care, passion, and protectiveness toward her. Talon’s choices were sometimes childish, but he owns it and grows, which made me like him more.

The plot doesn’t hit hard upfront because the focus is initially on Penelope and Talon’s dynamic, but the groundwork is all there. And while I did see the ending coming, it was still satisfying to watch each of them find their happiness together.

Thank you Booksirens for this ARC. I received this ARC for free and voluntarily leave my review.

Cassie does it again!! This book kept me on the edge of my seat. Talk about taking evil (almost) stepmom to a whole new level. Poor Talon & Minxy having to grow up with an awful woman like that. Enough about her though, let’s talk about the main characters. I loved Penelope. She was such an honest and real character with so many different sides to her. I loved Gideon for being the first to make her truly feel seen. I also knew Silas had to be a love interest from the very beginning. They had way too much chemistry not to end up together. Talon, my sweet baby angel. Was he unhinged? Absolutely. Did he pull on my heartstrings? Well yes. He was definitely the comedic relief that we needed even when he was struggling to keep himself together after getting hit with back to back to back revelations about his mom. Star of the show… Minxy. We may have only gotten her towards the end, but her personality was big enough to make a lasting impression. I know she’s going to keep the four of them on their toes. I wish we got a little bit more closure on Penelope and her dad. He may have been a bit naive and blind to the evil that he was about to marry, but in his defense, she was very talented at being manipulative. Hopefully after getting over the realization of his daughter’s relationships, he is able to find a place with them as well. Thank you for the ARC as always 🫶🏻🤩

Cassie Lein outdid herself with ‘The Blackmail’. I loved Talon, even when he was being a bad boy, and I loved watching him grow up steadily throughout—managing to make a share scene with his uncle non-creepy, although you know it should be. The family dynamic is awkward in the beginning, but, with the incredible maturity of Silas and Gideon’s guidance, it works. Minx’s bravery is admirable for almost 15, and her spunk is the comic relief needed in the heaviest of moments. The villainess is truly one I love to hate. She is despicable, non redeemable, and had me praying she gets what she deserves sooner rather than later throughout. Good stuff.

P.S. The cover model is the exact kind of gorgeous I picture Talon to be … 🥵

I received this book through BookSirens after the summary caught my attention. It was released early last month, and the premise promised several elements I already love in romance.

This is a why choose romance with a mystery element woven throughout, along with a sex club setting that adds intrigue and spice to the story. Those components were easily my favorite part. The atmosphere was interesting, the concept felt fresh, and the writing itself flowed well and was easy to stay engaged with.

Where the book fell a little short for me was in the character progression and relationship development. While I enjoyed the characters individually, I found myself wishing the emotional and romantic connections had unfolded more gradually and realistically. Some moments felt rushed, which made it harder for certain relationships to fully land with the impact they could have had.

That said, I still enjoyed the story overall. The plot kept my interest, the themes were fun, and the author has a solid writing style that makes this an easy and enjoyable read. Readers who love why choose romances with mystery, spice, and an edgy setting will likely have a great time with this one.

Whoo! What a ride. Not only is this about forbidden relationships but the mystery underneath it all and how connected all the main characters are. I loved how we slowly were dropped hints along the way about the main characters and just how close to each other they truly were. Penelope was fun, she knew what she wanted and went for it. Gideon was protective and sweet, while Silas took control and Talon ended up showing his true feelings. The suspense storyline was good and engaging, with twists and turns along the way.

I really like this book, as I do any other Cassie Lein book.

I loved that penelope is confident in her sexuality, and that her heart is open to love more than 1 person.

Gideon and Silas, well they are what dreams are made of. Protective, attentive and what penelope wants she gets. Would loved to have seen more scenes at club Velvet.

Talon seemed quite nieve at the beginning but im.glas we got to see his caring side.

I would love to read more of Minxy, she seems like chaos wrapped up in a bubble!

This was an exciting, spicy, polyamorous romance. It has a twist that shocked me. The four main characters are intriguing and complex. It was so exciting that I read through it pretty fast. Penelope is a strong and smart female main character. The story is told from the perspective of the 4 main characters. This was part of the anthology series. There is also an element of mystery and suspense.

A little slow for the group to get together for me personally but I liked how the story unfolded. I liked Penelope and how should stood her ground and how the guys all worshipped her. A real good book and Cassie definitely out did herself again with this one.

The Blackmail by Cassie Lein.

Penelope’s a TA, Talon’s her new student, her new student – and what he doesn’t know and she doesn’t realize yet is that she’s in bed with his uncles.

During the week Penelope is a teacher’s assistant, but during the weekends she lives a very different life. On the weekends she’s a regular at Velvet, a sex/kink club. This is where she met Silas and Gideon, two men she calls her boyfriends.

Then one night she gets a request for a scene for this new dom, Talon… a scene that she accepts and enjoys. She expects that this will be a one and done with this stranger. Penelope is shocked when she walks into class the following Monday to find him sitting in her classroom, as her student.

And as if that’s not messy enough, a brunch at her father’s home reveals that Talon is about to become her stepbrother. Talon is dead set on pursuing Penelope, but Penelope already has two partners in Silas and Gideon. They both ground and support her and she knows that they would do anything for her including burn the world down to protect her.

What no one knows, Talon’s mother is hiding a secret that binds all of their lives together.

Man did I love this narrative. The way that Silas and Gideon manage to center and balance Penelope allowing her to be her to be her own person, her own dom. When she meets Talon, he brings a different, more chaotic devotion to the dynamic that the three of them have already established. I adored the way Silas, Gideon, and Talon show Penelope such care, passion, and protectiveness. I did at times find Talon’s choices to be somewhat childish, but at the same time he did own it and grow which did make me like him that much more.

The plot was slow to hit as it starts off focusing on Penelope and Talon’s singular dynamic. But it also lays the groundwork for the rest of the story. And when I did find the ending coming into focus, it was so satisfying to watch as they all find their happiness together.

I highly recommend this book and it needs to be read to be appreciated.

3/3.5 ⭐️

The Blackmail is the last Standalone in Clear View Country Club series by new to me author Cassie Lein.
This TA/Student, Step Siblings, Reverse Age-Gap, Forced Proximity, Dark Romance has us following the narrative through multiple POVs including Teaching Assistant Penelope ‘Pen’ Grace and College Student Talon Grant.

Based off the blurb and tropes alone, the story caught me off guard from some of the unexpected surprises and twists. Considering the direction of the storyline was not what I was expecting in the very least.

I think author Cassie did a good job in differentiating between the different relationships that were showcased and explored through as the story developed.
And that too with the help of the different POVs, allowing us to gain insight from the characters with their inner monologues, expressing their thoughts, views, opinions and feelings, when it came to said relationships.
Knowing that it was new to all of them and that it was not going to be an easy feat, especially if done without communication.

While it was a decent read, I can’t deny there was quite a few issues for me that led to its downfall.
Considering all that was going on, especially with each of the characters, due to their connections and links to one another. I couldn’t help but feel like it was too much, particularly with all that was going on and needed to be told. Making the story overly heavy in my opinion.
It was to the point of either seeing some parts being forgotten or being pushed to the back and then forgotten. Or even some being rushed through fairly quickly.
The story in my opinion was longer than it necessary needed to be, causing me to step back with taking breaks. While other times having me dragging my feet due to not being able to connect with the story.

Although the story had its moments of having depth to it, particularly due to secrets, lies and deceit it ventured towards, given the mystery surrounding it. Paving the way to a suspenseful build at times, waiting and wondering in curiosity for the questions raised due to the missing pieces found along the way.
However with that said, the climax felt anticlimactic seeing as the subplot that led to it felt rushed given the timing of it being pushed to the forefront, to then come together and be exposed at the very edge of the book. Finishing just in the nick of time, right before the very end.

This maybe just me, but there didn’t seem to be enough character development.
At least not that I can recall in getting the full backstory of how each of the characters found themselves overlapping with the FMC Penelope. As well as how and what led the Penelope to joining the club.
It would’ve be nice to know, since the club had its importance within the storyline.
It just felt like the story jumped in mid way with some information mentioned in the passing as a way to fill in the gaps.

In the end, with this being my first read from Cassie Leni, The Blackmail made for decent read overall.
However due to the many issues, it just wasn’t my cup of tea, having expected more. Particularly when compared to some of the other great reads I enjoyed from the Clear View Country Club series.

Penelope Grace is twenty-two, brilliant, and suffocating under the weight of being the perfect daughter of one of the wealthiest men in the state. Her only outlet? Friday nights at Velvet, the ultra exclusive BDSM club where she’s known only as “Mistress Raven”, a masked dominatrix who never subs, never plays the same man twice, and never, ever removes her mask.

So of course the one time she breaks her “one scene only” rule and lets a cocky, gorgeous stranger push every single one of her buttons while he’s chained to her St. Andrew’s cross… he turns out to be…

The new transfer student in her grad-level ethics seminar (she’s the TA). And The son of the woman her widowed father just got engaged to. AND In possession of a very clear photo of her face the moment she let him come. (OMG exciting right)

Penelope isn’t a “domme lite” heroine who secretly wants to submit the second a man growls at her, no. She is ruthless, calculated, and sexually merciless.

When the hero (Sebastian “Bash” Carrington, spoiled heir with a pain kink and zero chill) tries to flip the script, she calls in her loyal stable of devoted sub clients (millionaires, politicians, athletes) who would burn the world down if she asked.

The power shifts are just amazing.
The tension is nuclear. The dirty talk is 🥵 . And the way Penelope uses her own desire, refusing to let shame touch her even when her entire carefully constructed life is at risk, had me cheering at my kindle.

Is it realistic that every man in a 50 mile radius falls to his knees for her? No. Do I care? Also no.

But honestly? I inhaled this in one sitting and immediately pre-ordered book 2 (which appears to be about Penelope’s terrifyingly competent best friend and a certain masked submissive from Velvet).

The Blackmail is pure, unapologetic catnip for readers who are tired of heroines who “discover” their sexuality only when the hero deigns to teach them.

Penelope Grace was in charge the whole damn time, and it’s glorious.

If you like:
❤️ Female domme / male sub (that eventually evolves into a power exchange relationship)
💜Step-sibling adjacent (no blood relation, parents engaged)
❤️Blackmail & revenge kink
💜”Touch her and die” protective energy from an entire harem of worshipful ex-play partners
❤️Absolutely zero shaming of sex work or kink.
…then run, don’t walk.

This is not your typical why choose. This is a story about a woman that is open in her relationships and frequents a local club. At the beginning of the story, she is dating one man, working on cementing a relationship with another, and enjoying scenes as a switch at the club. The relationships between the FMC and the men that she is dating are wonderful examples of how open/polyamorous relationships can function. The FMC does find herself in some trouble when one of the men she plays with at the club turns out to be a student in the class that she is TA for. Not only that, but he is the son of the woman her father is dating. Each of the main characters in this story has such a different personality and you can see how this all works out. This is a fun story with a little bit of mystery and some twists to keep you engaged and there is definitely a villain for you to dislike. I enjoyed the contrasting worlds that the FMC has to maneuver in order to live her double life. This was a fun, entertaining why choose that was easy to read and kept my attention throughout.

The characters in this book were so very different from each other. Penelope is a strong, smart FMC. She has a man she is in a relationship with, a man that she is starting a new relationship with, and becomes a switch when she does her first scene at the club as a domme with a young guy that is new to the club. Talon is young, and definitely can be immature, but is battling with the trauma that his mother has put him through. He does everything with his little sister in mind. Gideon is the first boyfriend of Penelope, and I just appreciated how he supported and protected Penelope. And then there is Silas, a man that knows what he wants and completes this group.

Cassie Lien does a great job of writing spicy why choose books that you are able to get lost in until the end. The spice is definitely spicing and absolutely worth the read. The entire storyline with Talon, Minxy, and their mother was a such a great addition to this story and kept me interested beyond the relationships between MCs. Definitely worth the read.

I really enjoyed Penelope's story in this why choose reverse harem romance with a BIG twist in drama, murder and mystery.
A life much needed outside the norm, Penelope walks a fine line when she goes to her other interest, the Sex Club, Velvet House, where depending on the night she meets up with either Silas or Gideon. Two men who know how to satisfy, knows the other exists, but not who they are.......
As Penelope returns to Uni to finish her Undergrad in Sociology, she meets Talon. She is now a TA for her Sociology class and Talon attends her class. Penny and Talon first meet up at Velvet House, his wanting a Dominatrix to overpower him. To let him hand over all control. Penelope is a switch and this particular meet up is her first as a Dom as she normally subs for Silas or Gideon. Both Penny and Talon feel a pull towards each other...one that is unwelcome by Penny, not so much by Talon!
Enter her father Chad, who is moving on after Penelope's mother passed and becomes engaged to Abi, Talon's mother.
Abi is the dark character in this story and of course has a history.
All is revealed as this thriller of a ride builds up to Penelope wanting her two men to meet.
Feeling confused with her interest in Talon, she tries to put up boundaries to prevent him from approaching her, but fails miserably.
Tensions are high, as at Chad and Abi's surprise engagement party, the three men in Penelope's life end up in the same room..... The dynamite is lit and ready to explode!!
You will love all the MMC's, Talon, Gideon and Silas as they worm their way into your heart.....and Penelope's!!

Whoa, it's a ride, and one story that you can't put down till you find out what the heck is going on! This story sucked me in from the beginning and just kept giving.
Loved it from start to finish and if you don't like polyamory in a book, then this story is not for you!
I enjoy all "why choose" and this story does not disappoint.
A saucy 5 stars from me!

This book is a college reverse harem with age-gaps, a small reverse age-gap, a sex club, and tons of spice. It would've been great if it weren't for one character.

So I'll start with what I loved or enjoyed. I enjoyed the club, loved the kinks, and really liked the conversations around consent, rules, and all of that. The color-coded collars were great for the club as well. Gideon and Silas were amazing!!! If this book had been an MFM with them and Penelope it would've been five stars. Their relationship is so open and honest, mature, and they all just fit so well together. I loved them together! Their spicy scenes were everything! The overall plot was ok, though very predictable.

Now what I didn't like was Talon. I haven't hated a character this much in a while. Every time a chapter was in his pov or he was even on the page, I gave the world's deepest sigh and rolled my eyes. He is so so immature, selfish, a brat, honestly, he's like a toddler throwing a tantrum when you tell them no. Lord I can't stand him. He ruined this book. He had no right to be in that kind of relationship because he's too immature for it. He doesn't fit in with them at all. I didn't like that Gideon and Silas were going to be talking to him about his threats etc and then never did. He needed that talk. So unbelievably irritating! Then I also thought there should've been more mentions of the Clear View Country Club since that's the series. Instead, we got one small chapter with it. The other books all went around it. If it wasn't for that one chapter I would've never known that this was a part of that interconnected series. The pacing was kind of slow and dragged in some chapters.

The book was ok, but not one I'd read again or recommend. If Talon didn't exist in it at all, it would've been much better.

If you want mystery, suspense, twist and turns all wrapped into a why choose taboo romance, this is going to be the story for you. From the beginning, I loved Penelope. She was a ball buster, who knew exactly what she wanted and she certainly was getting that with Silas, Gideon and eventually Talon. I loved seeing the push and pull in regards to her feelings with Talon. I feel like it was easier for her to rationalize what she felt for Silas and Gideon, especially when the prospect of all of them meeting was on the table, but there was something about Talon, and not even in the sense that he was her student or that he was going to be her new stepbrother, that really gave her pause and it was really nice to see her feelings and desires win out in the end. I also really loved the twist that tied all of the men together. It wasn't just Penelope and without spoiling it, my jaw certainly hit the floor when I finally read how they all knew each other. I also really loved how there was a very well developed side story with Talon's sister, Minxy, and that it wasn't just a slightly touched upon portion of the overall story. There was a lot of the main story that centered around her despite her being a minor player in this tale and there are very few authors who are able to pull off telling those stories with the background characters and as in times past, Cassie proves with this tale that she is one of the best in her ability to do so. I, for one, would love to see a story later on down the line that features Minxy, especially since she certainly went through her own horrors at the hands of her mother. It would be nice to see just how she heels and lives life now that she is free. I will certainly have to get my hands on the rest of this series because there has to be more going on at this country club and now that I am invested, I can't get enough!

I've read and loved several of Cassie Lein's books now, but The Blackmail has to be at least one of my favorite books of hers. It's an engaging and entertaining dark romance/romantic suspense with interesting, lovable characters; an intriguing mystery or two that I had fun trying to solve along the way; and a satisfying ending, including but not limited to an HEA. I loved getting to know FMC Penelope and MMCs Gideon, Silas, and Talon, who are all strong characters with different and incredibly fun characteristics and dynamics. The banter between all of them is hilarious (I laughed so much), and the chemistry is absolutely scorching. Moreover, the many steamy scenes are well written and truly enhance the story by bringing the characters closer together.

While The Blackmail focuses on Penelope and Talon's tantalizing push-pull relationship to begin with, the book is about so much more than a forbidden romance between a TA and her student/soon-to-be stepbrother, as it also delves into her other relationships with two confident older men and her Dad's relationship with her intense and suspicious soon-to-be stepmother, setting the scene for some unique taboo twists and turns and a dramatic and shocking conclusion. Without giving anything away, I'll say that figuring out the clues that Cassie left us readers and discovering all the connections between the characters was highly amusing.

All in all, The Blackmail is a fast-paced, action-packed read that balances plot and spice and showcases not only Cassie's great storytelling ability but also her creativity when it comes to writing characters and connections. I think she shines most when she writes RH stories with strong FMCs and MMCs who support them, and I look forward to reading more of them.

The Blackmail is a gripping, dark, and emotionally charged read that kept me completely on edge from the very first chapter. Cassie Lein masterfully weaves suspense, desire, and danger into a story that refuses to let go until the very last page.

At the heart of the story is Penelope, a strong yet vulnerable heroine whose past is deeply tied to her father, Chad, and the secrets that threaten to unravel her world. Enter Silas, Gideon, and Talon—three men who each bring their own intensity, power, and complexity to the story. Their presence raises the stakes at every turn, blurring the lines between protection, control, and trust in a way that feels both thrilling and emotionally layered.

The supporting characters add even more depth to the plot. Minxy, Talon’s sister, brings sharp edges and loyalty, while their mother, Abi, grounds the story with a history that adds weight to the choices being made. Every character feels purposeful, connected, and essential to the unfolding tension.

The plot is fast-paced, dark, and filled with twists that keep you guessing without ever giving too much away. Just when you think you understand the direction things are going, the story shifts, tightening the grip and pulling you deeper into Penelope’s world. The emotional stakes are high, the chemistry is undeniable, and the suspense builds flawlessly.

And the ending? Perfect. It delivers exactly what the story promises—satisfying, powerful, and well-earned—without feeling rushed or overdone.

If you love dark romance with strong characters, layered relationships, and a plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat, The Blackmail is an absolute must-read. Cassie Lein proves once again why her storytelling leaves such a lasting impact.

I opened The Blackmail fully prepared for a dark, deliciously messy ride—brooding vibes, sharp edges, generous spice. What I did not expect was to be mentally drop-kicked into a perpetual state of what in the actual hell did I just read? (said with awe, not distress). Cassie Lein doesn’t just twist expectations; she gleefully ties them into knots and leaves you there, blinking.

Convinced I had it all neatly figured out within the first chapters? How naïve of me. Around the 30% mark, I waved the white flag and accepted that my brain was now living rent-free in Cassie’s chaos. This book is unlike anything I’ve read before—and that’s not a compliment I give lightly.

Yes, the forbidden age gap is front and center, but thinking that’s the story would be a rookie mistake. There’s a creeping, unsettling mystery woven through the pages, a darkness that doesn’t stem from the main characters themselves but lurks ominously in the background, tightening its grip chapter by chapter. Add to that a healthy list of triggers—this is very much a check-them-first situation—and you have a book that is unapologetically not for the faint of heart, nor for the morally inflexible.

This is smutty, dark, emotional, and deeply unsettling in the best possible way. It will polarize readers. You’ll either love it or loathe it—but you absolutely won’t be indifferent. As for me? It’s already secured a cozy spot among my top reads of 2025.

Because in the end, family is what you choose.
And honestly? To hell with everyone else’s opinions.

The Blackmail is a sharp, provocative dark romance that thrives on power plays, secrets, and a heroine who refuses to be owned. Penelope Grace lives a double life—working as a TA at her local school and then commanding dominatrix by night—and the contrast is intoxicating. Velvet isn’t just a club; it’s her sanctuary, the one place where she holds the reins. When that carefully controlled world collides with her real life in the form of a smug, dangerous new student who knows exactly who she is and what she does, the story ignites into something deliciously tense and addictive. Ooh now Talon!!!! He's something else he maybe young but that boy knows what he's doing!!! While she's already in bed with two Dom's Silas and Gideon who she met at the club.......these two are super sweet to her and then if seeing Talon in her class on Monday morning wasn't shocking enough......oh yeah what she doesn't realise is that all three men know each other already!!!

What truly elevates this book is Penelope herself. She shifts from submissive to Domme in the most graceful way. She’s unapologetic, clever, and fiercely in control, even when blackmail threatens to strip everything away. The chemistry crackles, the mind games are ruthless, and the stakes feel deeply personal as desire clashes with defiance. With its dark academia vibes, erotic edge, and a heroine who turns the tables instead of begging mercy, The Blackmail is a bold, empowering read that will captivate fans.

The Blackmail by Cassie Lein is a dark, taboo reverse harem that thrives on power, control, and psychological tension. With a commanding FMC, layered dynamics, and strong suspense elements, this book pulls you in fast and doesn’t let go.

Penelope lives a double life by design. During the week, she’s polished and controlled. On Fridays at Velvet, she’s powerful, untouchable, and free — shedding the expectations placed on her and reclaiming control in a way that feels earned, not reckless. That contrast is one of the strongest elements of the story.

Her relationships with Silas and Gideon are grounded in devotion, trust, and worship — they know her, protect her, and allow her to let her guard down completely. Talon, on the other hand, brings chaos. His immaturity was frustrating at times and ultimately what kept this from being a full 5-star read for me. That said, his character arc is necessary. When he’s knocked down a peg and more layers are revealed, it’s impossible not to feel for him — and his devotion ends up running just as deep.

The suspense is woven in smoothly, the twists land with impact, and the darker elements never feel gratuitous. Cassie Lein delivers a story that balances dominance, vulnerability, and obsession with precision.

Dark, intense, and emotionally charged — The Blackmail is a gripping read that proves power doesn’t have to be taken… sometimes it’s claimed.

This may be one of my favourite Cassie Lein books. I loved Penelope as a character; she's so comfortable in her own skin as well as with her own wants and needs when it comes to the MMCs. I hadn't realised this was a why choose but much preferred it as although I grew to like Talon, I much preferred the dynamic with Silas and Gideon in the mix too. Despite Talon being a bit immature in comparison to others at the beginning, his character really develops throughout the book and when the plot takes a sudden 180 he gets some great vulnerable moments. The cougar jokes were on point too and injected a bit of humour at the right time.

The Minxy plot was so unexpected as I had expected the drama to come from the angst of how Penelope was connected to the MMCs. Instead they bond together quite quickly to solve the mystery of what has happened to Minxy and I enjoyed that they were all on the same page straight away with no in fighting. This is a definite must read if you like why choose with a balance of spice and a plot with plenty of twists and turns.

My interpretation of the star system;
3 stars - I enjoyed it; would read the author again
4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series
5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely until I finished it and it is one I will re-read

Blackmail - Cassie Lein
5/5✨🌟

* SPOILERS *

Penelope, Silas, Gideon and Talon are probably one of my favorite why choose that Cassie has come up with. I was completely sucked into the journey of these four. It had a bit of mystery, which I really loved because you immediately want more.

Penelope finds out that Talon is the son of the woman her father is to marry and that the two men she is involved with are his uncle. Man, this was such a ride and I was here for it.

I loved how much information we get from this. We get a little bit of blackmailing, which was so exciting when it happened,

I really loved all the guys but there was just something about Talon because he’s just trying to figure himself out. I also felt for him because he just finds out just exactly how evil his mother truly was. I also felt like this story was everything I didn’t think I needed but got it anyways.

If you’re looking for a story to keep you on your toes, has some bdsm vibes and you are a fan of why choose/reverse harem with taboo, I highly recommend this book so much.

I received a copy of this book and this is my honest review.

Secrets, lies, forbidden fruit and a need club

By day Penelope is a TA at the local college. At night she can sometimes be found at Velvet the local Amex club. Here she plays both Domme or submissive depending on her current needs and wants. She is casually seeing two men, Silva's and Gideon, from the club who know she isn't settling down nor monogamous.

When she gets a Domme request things get a little complicated. Silas turns out to be in one of her classes which means he is off limits.

This is an interesting story with a lot of moving parts. We have a soon to be step mother who has kids of her own. One if whom is away at school but something is off about this woman and her background.

This turns out to be a little bit taboo but for multiple different reasons. Each of the relationships is unique with its own rules until everyone finds out who they are....you see they all know each other. I won't tell you how though.

The underlying secrets and lies from the soon to be step-mother and her family offer such an interesting story beyond just the development of relationships with Pen and her men.

🤷🏼‍♀️

Book 8 in the Clear View Country Club shared world...let's go!

Penelope has a secret and this is a story of what happens when two worlds collide...(along with a whole bunch of other stuff 😜)

🖤 Why Choose
☠️ Forbidden
🖤 Stepsiblings
☠️ TA X Student
🖤 Forced Proximity
☠️ Age Gap

Despite having ALL the good tropes, I didn't connect with this book; it felt like there was too much going on, which took away from other parts of the book, which, in my opinion, were worth exploring further.

The ending was good, a little predictable, but just right for the story. And the characters had potential, but it just didn't get there for me, unfortunately.

Overall, it was missing that certain je ne sais quoi 😭😭😭

⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶🌶.5

“If someone told you that you only get one great love in your life,” I continue, “then what? When they die, you’re done? You just… stop loving because your ‘one’ is gone?” I shake my head. “People heal. They move on. They fall again. That alone proves we’re not wired for just one connection.”

This was an ARC that came to me from the author via Book sirens.

Well! That was a surprise. Not at all what I was expecting.
What a great story, with an unusual twist.
We have 4 main characters, Penelope, the TA and apparently good girl, if you ask her dad! Then we have Talon, a student in one of Penelope's classes. But, twist one, they don't meet at school.
Third MC is Gideon, and then we meet Silas. Theres also Penelooe's dad, and Talon's mum, along with Minxy, Talon's absent sister.
So many strange circumstances, that keep the four MC's on their toes, whilst trying to work out why no one is allowed access to Minxy.
I loved the story, the sexy times, and the fact we weren't really sure what was going on for part of the story. The only thing I didn't like, were the names. It was as if the author had read some of my favorite authors and chosen to use the names from their books. Who actually calls their kid Minxy?
But, that aside, the writing and story were great, and I found it was a fast, enjoyable read.

The Blackmail is a contemporary romance that is written by Cassie Lein.

💜 college
💜 grief
💜 why choose
💜 age gap
💜 🌶🌶🌶🌶 spicy spice

Penelope is working hard to get her degree in social work and part of doing that is also working as a TA while going to school. She is excited to meet those goals and help people like her mother did. But, she also has another activity that she enjoys doing that’s outside of academia. This activity leans more toward likes and dislikes, kinks and hard stops, and checking in to make sure everyone is still good. But what happens when the two worlds start to collide? What happens when she starts to get feeling for a couple of people? Will she be able to juggle both?

This was a fun and spicy story. I liked how it wasn’t just spice and romance, but there was some mystery thrown in as well. The world building was done well and the character building was on point. I liked how this story not only explored different dynamics in the bedroom, but also in relationships. This story definitely kept me on my toes and I enjoyed every step of the way.

** May contain spoilers**

Where do I start……. for one I didn't expect a reverse harem/polyamorous book. The dynamics changed with Penelope & Talon when she had feelings for him. As his TA , she felt thir relationship was forbidden, but getting to know him she couldn't stop herself. He was very persistant!

Gideon & Silas, her other love interests both older, mature men keep her very happy. All different men who offer unique qualities that Penelope craves.

Although i did enjoy the book I didn't feel a connection to Penelope, I felt she was quite self absorbed, selfish at times and everything was about her. Pampered, cared by her men but totally being number one. She did know what she wanted and went for it but I felt the connections between them all was a bit lacking, maybe rushed and not in depth enough.

The story has some twists and turns, Minxy, Talon's sister was fun. Good writing, an enjoyable read that offers mystery, and a happy ending.I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
