When Ero enters a cave with a ragged band of adventurers, she seeks only to find the elusive centuries-old book a Temple Mother claimed would help her unravel the mystery of her lineage. Instead, she emerges as the party’s sole survivor…wearing a demon’s compulsion collar to boot.
Bůk left Hell in disgrace when a soft bard evaded his torment. Now to escape the irritations of the living plane and return to Hell several valuable souls richer, he must fulfill the contract he signed with Lord Austvix, one of the six warlords grasping for ultimate control of the land. But to do so, he’ll need Ero’s help solving a particularly thorny puzzle.
Ero knows better than to trust a demon. Bůk knows better than to lust after a bard. But desires, like the fates, have a sense of humor. By the time Ero discovers the truth about herself… By the time Bůk finds the answer to his riddles… their destinies may already be inextricably intertwined.
The Demon’s Collar is the first installment in The Bard’s Demon trilogy, an enemies-to-lovers dark fantasy romance that centers found family, a grumpy demon, a bard in existential crisis, and the occasional cat. Dark humor and dark spice abound. Please read with caution.
I want to thank Lyra Sterling for the rest of my days for creating Ero & Bůk! This was the spiciest, darkest demon romance I’ve read to date and it was pure perfection. I just love how Ero refused to back down, no matter what Bůk threw at her. While the spice and the sub/dom games these two play at the whole time take center stage, there was a well-balanced dose of intriguing plot and enriching secondary characters to keep me emotionally invested/eager to read the rest of the series! Lyra weaves crave-able humor throughout the story, something I was so pleased to read between the heavy and the spicy moments.
Please read tw’s before going in & if this sounds like a book for you I’m telling you, you need it!!!! I have thirsty highlights galore. The ending was so satisfying too. Not an intense, “how will I recover from this?” cliffhanger. It was nicely done in a way that sets up the next book perfectly.
**Thank you to the author, Lyra Sterling, for the chance to read the eARC of The Demon’s Collar in exchange for my honest review! I had THE best time and am now feral for Bůk**
When I saw Lyra needed arc readers for this book with a DEMON MMC, I had to apply and 😮💨 am I glad I got to read this beauty! This book was everything I crave in a dark fantasy romance (and I finished it in one day). Sharp writing, witty banter, and characters who leap off the page. It's brimming with tension, humor, and just the right amount of danger to keep you hooked from the first line. The mix of dark spice and dark humor is perfection. A thrilling, deliciously twisted start to a series. Well 👏🏼 done 👏🏼
an incredible display of world building amd characterisation where everything comes back to haunt the narrative later. the characters and magic explode off the page, and every chapter has something to blow your mind afresh. Bůk and Ero are brilliantly designed and written with nuance and panache. a book for anyone who has ever explored or wondered about exploring the difference between "want" and "need". A Dark Romance that will leave you breathless
I was so excited to read this book and it did not disappoint! The Demon's Collar was impossible to put down. The MCs' have the hottest dynamic l've read this summer. And that twist? Incredible! I'm very curious to see where Lyra will take this story next.
This is a new to me author that I found from their posts on threads. The synopsis of the story was interesting to me, and I was excited to receive a free advance copy. I really like that on page 1, you’re just dropped into the action with Ero. For me, books that just drop you in and require you to catch up are great at keeping my attention. Then we get Bůk’s POV and poor Ero, she sealed her own fate…
The fast pacing and action of the first two chapters stays pretty consistent throughout and the mystery of finding out who Ero’s father really is is a good one. Even if I did have a pretty good guess of who he was, confirming who he is wasn't any less satisfying. Ero’s mother is awful. I can't wait to read what happens next…
Ok, so first things first, Demon’s Collar is absolutely amazing. Lyra Sterling has given an amazing start to her trilogy with a 4.5-star read. In terms of plot, it gets a 4 from me. I wish some things were explored more in-depth in the story, but I believe, based on the ending, we will get those explained more in the following books, or at least we should, especially with that cliffhanger ending she gave us. I will say the story progression was very well written, following Ero and Bůk’s story. In terms of spice, I say it’s a 3. We do get some good descriptive scenes, but not very many. It is a must-read for those who love a good enemies-to-lovers, with a bit of Stockholm syndrome thrown in, as well as a possessive MMC. Just make sure you read your triggers to be prepared. I can’t wait for book 2 and more stories to come from Lyra.
This book was EVERYTHING I wanted and more. I am going to be thinking of it NONSTOP until the next book comes out.
I really didn’t know what to expect from Ero for the majority of the book and the big “identity” reveals that happened surprised me, but were perfect when explained! Bůk was the perfect mean, growly MMC who thought he was impervious to Ero’s innocent charms. I really enjoyed watching them come together and start to accept their feelings for each other!
I can’t wait to see how the rest of the story progresses and what happens with Ero’s family! I also can’t wait for more of Lyra’s humor and imagination (seriously the venomous battle toads might have been my favorite part).
This is a new to me author and I was given the opportunity to ARC review (yay!).
This book is great! It has good energy right from the beginning, I didn't need multiple chapters to feel pulled in. Both the main characters are great in their own ways. 😉 Great writing, characters and pace made this book hard to put down. The twist towards the end and the cliffhanger ending has me eager for the next book in the series!
This chapter quote took me out. 😂☠️
“You know those times when a rock toad licks your eye and you go blind and accidentally murder the demon who’s buried balls deep in your ass? No? I wish I didn’t either. Wasn’t my best day.”
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was a good read, with a vivid world and amazing 3d characters. tropes inckuded forced proximity, enemies to lovers, and abduction. If you like shadow daddies this is a good book!!!
Ummm I need book two immediately, especially after that cliffhanger 🫠😱
This was highly bingeable. I couldn’t put it down. And I wasn’t expecting it to be funny, but the dark humor had me honestly cackling at times 🤣
I was instantly intrigued by our demon MMC, and knew our journey to unravel Ero’s backstory (FMC) would be a fun one—which it absolutely was. The side characters delivered, too. I especially loved Bůk’s beef with Aelith.
Plus there are cats. 🩶
+ dark (check trigger warnings) + possessive (and unhinged) MMC + enemies to lovers + grumpy demon + chains + magic + who did this? + mine + found family
This was a fun book! The beginning made me think of a Dungeons and Dragons adventure gone bad. I love bards and Ero was a great one. She started off unsure of who she was but really grew into a strong woman. The epigraphs at the beginning of each chapter gave a lot of insight about her too. Buk was so serious and the contrast between them made their relationship interesting. But Aelith was my favorite character with her wit and love and ability to irritate Buk.
I read this in just 2 days because I had to see how it ended! If you are in the mood for an adventure and romance, give this debut a try!
I just want to say thank you so much for this ARC Read! This story did not disappoint!
Ok, so, you have a demon, fae, humans, magic, gods, smut, plot, in all honesty what else can you ask for?
I love how the smut didn’t cover the plot. This story was fun to read. From the first page so much was happening, Ero’s inner thoughts freaking kills me. She’s so likeable, strong willed and just overall a great FMC.
The writing was itself was super interesting, I had a hard time figuring out how to pronounce things, maybe that was just me? But I still enjoyed how different it was. The MMC is name Bůk and i read it as Buck? Regardless I still like the unique names and writing style! You can bet your butts I’ll be signing up for book 2’s arc read for sure once it’s release!
I absolutely adored this book, I was hooked from the start. It was incredibly interesting, I didn't expect what happened. I loved the characters, especially Ero and Buk! It's also 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
I read this in a day on 12/23/25, and like a crazy person I just re-read it on 01/04/26.
it’s well-written, funny, hot, and there’s a fast-paced plot. from page one, there’s always something going on, which is a rare treat. delicious BDSM, if that’s your jam.
cannot wait for book 2, and I’m disappointed the Patreon link at the end of the book isn’t working anymore. I was ready to jump on that, because damn does March 2026 feel far away!
does anybody know this author’s other pen name(s)?
Lyra Sterling brings us a dark fantasy demon romance with some fantastic banter, wit, charm and spice.
Ero is a bard, who wants a place to fit in and know where she belongs. Bůk is a grumpy demon, tasked with working under Lord Austvix to help him gain control of the land on the precipice of another great war. Ero soon finds herself captive and collared by Bůk, who cannot let the mischievous bard get under his skin.
I loved Ero, she has these great inner monologues, and she is sarcastic and witty. You can't help but root for her... even when her actions make you grimace. Bůk is this very grumpy kind of mean demon who refuses to let the Bard have the upper hand—and he will exert control—one way or another.
This is a *dark* romance so do keep in mind that some dynamics might not be comfy for all readers.
I think there is a great balance of spice and plot. I did find there was a little lull for me about 2/3 into the book, but I am so intrigued after many reveals and interwoven fates are made apparent towards the end of the book. Bonus points for cool cats.
"I wanted to wander. I wanted to meet people and bring them a tiny bit of the journey and hope they remembered my name. Even if that sounded too small to say aloud."
Lyra dumped you right into the thrill of it all and it never let up. Not once. If you weren't questioning this, that, or the other, you were locked in on Ero and Bůk’s story. Dark romance has a way of pulling you in and then releasing its hold, almost like a heartbeat. Which is one of my favorite things about dark romance, Sterling did that better than some. Huge nod to the spice too, not only was it executed well, but it was also stellar! *CLEAN UP ON AISLE 7*
No matter what was going on in the story I was never bored or waiting for the next "exciting" thing to happen. I was on the edge of my seat right up until the end.
Then, the END?! I can't wait to see what is to come in book two!
This was my first Lyra Sterling book, but it won't be my last.
🌶🌶🌶 ✅️ Posessive Demon MMC ✅️ Captor/Captive ✅️ Forced Proximity ✅️ Touch her and die ☠️ ✅️ Magic ✅️ Found Family ✅️ Banter & Sarcasm
I had the opportunity to read this as an ARC, and I found this to be a fun and engaging read that I couldn't put down. I devoured this book in less than a day, and it made me laugh, smile, and even had me feeling sad/sorry for some of the characters at times. The author does a great job of building her characters and really pulling you into their story and their experiences.
Bůk, our MMC, is a demon given form in human flesh. He has a contract to fulfill and is controlled by the Lord he works for. On one of his missions, he meets our FMC, Ero. He decides she may be useful to him and takes her with him, placing a collar on her to keep her under control.
Our FMC Ero is a lonely traveling bard with no family or personal connections to speak of. While trying to find answers about her family and legacy, she is captured by Bůk and forced to join with him and the faction he serves.
What takes place next is all a whirlwind of forced proximity and tension, but definitely not a slow burn! Fighting their feelings vs. their own needs and desires for what they want, Ero and Bůk form a connection with each other and their faction members to keep each other alive while being hunted by an enemy faction. The banter and snark are fun and on point, and the characters are well developed and really made me feel for them. Very glad I had the opportunity to read this book and I will definitely continue reading this series.
I will say when this book is dark. Holly hell, from the get go there is a slaughter, a collaring, domination, and the need to feed on emotions.
The last dark fantasy I read that comes close to this would have to be either The Witch’s Pet by Kerri Andrews or more similarly to Feathers so Vicious by Liz Vander.
I do love the mini journal entries form the characters before their chapters, its an interesting dip into the the upcoming situation or the psyche.
I like most of the Rag tag group from one of the warring factions. But holy cluster of darkness does this book leave you in the dark, keeps you guessing.
as the FMC find out and as the MMC divulges the layers are slowly being pulled back but slowly.
I was with Ero and Buk all the way till the last couple of pages. Cause I mean come on that cliff hanger. Bro was growing, learning, finding, and figuring out her life and then there was a big FU from the gods and now I have to wait for the second book to figure out if she will betray everything or stick with her latest decisions.
Key points in no particular order: - hidden birth parents (human FMC) - Demon MMC (very dark) - non/dubious con - SA - the chase/hunt for captives - salvery/captivity - Collar/pet - Dominant/break her spirit - Bratty FMC mouth leads before the brain can think - Degredation praise K* - ink - Found and finding family.
Wow. Just wow. This book had me in an absolute chokehold. I’m obsessed and already counting the days until the next installment of this trilogy.
From the opening scene, The Demon’s Collar throws you into a world of danger, tension, and impossible choices. Ero’s emergence from the cave as the lone survivor, bound by a demon’s compulsion collar, sets the stage for a story that is equal parts thrilling and emotionally charged.
The dynamic between Ero and Bůk is phenomenal and it is written with such intensity. Their push and pull, the constant battle between distrust and desire, makes every interaction electric. The enemies-to-lovers dynamic here isn’t rushed, it unfolds with a natural tension that had me hooked on every page.
And the twists! There were so many moments that blindsided me in the best way possible. Just when I thought I knew where the story was headed, everything turned upside down. Each reveal felt sharp, deliberate, and raised the stakes even higher. The mix of suspense, dark humor, and moments of genuine vulnerability made this such a layered, compelling read.
Dark, spicy, and full of heart, The Demon’s Collar is an unforgettable start to what’s shaping up to be an incredible series.
I was grateful to receive an advanced copy of this book; all opinions are my own and are shared voluntarily.
☆ eARC review rating : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ spice : 🌶🌶🌶.5 - SMASH. Lyra you devil, the amount of effort it took for me to get hooked on this story was maybe 6 pages? It was an insta love for me, this one will stick definitely stick with me while I simmer in waiting for book two.
The comedic gold that was splattered over the pages was impressive; the banter and inner monologuing always had me cackling. And the 𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 .. the dark, dirty and barbaric romance. Exactly what you'd expect from a powerful centuries-old demon with a connection to all desires. I freaking loved Bůk (yes, the brutish demon is named after our favourite thing 🤭). There's so much to unpack with him, but his obsession and possessiveness with Ero was intoxicating. Ero was amazing! The way her magic weaved through her music was captivating, she was clever, courageous, and way more than a mere bard. I enjoyed her development, and the information offload about her.
The romance was so well written, the characters had captivating stories that already have me asking for more. I was so blown away by everything. the plot was packed with twists and shockers that ill be reeling over for days, but the humor and creativity was top tier for me.
I've been following Lyra for awhile and her debut novel was was nothing short of phenomenal! Thank you so much for this amazing ARC.
A debut romantasy novel with feral D&D vibes featuring a demon shadow daddy? Hell yes!
Ero is a half elf bard on a mission to learn about her legacy…except the party she joined has just been obliterated. The sole survivor, Ero is captured by the demon Bůk and made to wear a collar that can force her submission.
Add that to Bůk’s ability to read desires and his…skill at tormenting his captives, and you can see where part of their relationship is going. Add in some enemies to lovers, opposites attract. forced proximity and one horse/tent and things get pretty steamy.
This is an epic, rollicking adventure that has shades of Outlander in it at times. I can see how the various characters have been based around D&D characters, and there were some lovely little Easter eggs hidden throughout the book for players to enjoy. Like any good campaign, there are battles to be fought, magical weapons, mystical instructions to follow, magic powered by music (she’s a bard, duh!) and a wider story that emerges as the book progresses.
As you may have guessed, this is an open door book. In fact, forget the walls and doors too. It is somewhat slow burn. Parental abandonment, loyalty and found family are key aspects of this story.
I really enjoyed this book and would heartily recommend it to fans of D&D, romantasy/fantasy and shadow daddies alike.
From the get go on this book it grabs you in a vise grip (around the neck of course) and just won't let loose.
I loved how much this book showed you so heavily the difference between want and need, as well as the picture of a strong dom/sub relationship as both Ero and Bůk push at each other to find limits.
They are both written masterfully and the constant intensity between them is beautiful. Finding a book that slowly changes from enemies to lovers like this is unusual as it normally feels a bit more risked and yours was both slow burning changes and intense when there was any adjustment in their actions towards each other. phenomenal and it is written with such intensity.
Super spicy, heated and so dark, that it was a super compelling read and the twists never stopped coming. This is a wonderful start to a trilogy and I can't wait for the next installment.
I will say, please make sure to check the TW to make sure the book is appropriate for you, but Lyra Sterling did an exemplary job with including what might be an issue for some on the float page to avoid a shock for anyone reading.
I am very grateful to be one of the lucky people to have an ARC of the book, the opinions are mine only and shared voluntarily.
This was such a good read! I love getting to read a series that I know will be totally bingeable once they all release! Now the love/hate of having to wait for the next book begins!
What I liked: - The slow reveal that Ero is more than she seems - Love Bru and Aelith- they are adorable and I need a book on them at some point - MMC- I love his whole persona - I love the gods/goddess combined with demons and magical creatures. Just makes my heart so happy when it is done so well. - Spice was nice but not as intense as I imagined it but that's okay
What I didnt like: - MMC- I hated his whole persona -Ero frustrated me because she was needy for affection and blindly went into things without thinking it through.(even though I get why, it still annoyed me) - I HATE the siblings with a passion
Overall: 5/5 Plot: 3.5/5 Character Dev: 4/5 Spice: 3/5-- when Spice was there it was delicious but I fel like their dynamic should've bern much more intense Entertainment Factor: 5/5
I love this book. It's one of those that I couldn't wait to pick up to find out what the characters were up to. The plot is captivating and airtight. The characters are fully formed and feel real despite being part of a fantasy. They and the story are revealed in great detail over time. The characters aren't simply types. They earn every choice they make in love, friendship, and war. And they earned every feeling I had about them - feelings that changed as the story developed, which also made the book fun to read.
Sterling's writing is imaginative and full of humor as well as adventure. She's put together a world that's satisfyingly complex and which she describes so deftly that I was never tempted to skip through paragraphs of exposition or geography. She's also great technically. For just a small example with no spoilers, in Chapter 8, she's thought of a clever way to recap the characters we've met so far. It was such a delight to read.
Happily, this is the beginning of a trilogy. I'm already looking forward to the next two books.
When I first picked up The Demon’s Collar, I can’t say I was instantly hooked. It took me a bit to settle into the story, and at first I didn’t feel that pull to keep reading. Still, I was enjoying it enough to come back whenever I put it down.
Then just over halfway through the pace picked up, the spice really kicked in, and suddenly I couldn’t stop turning pages!! Lyra’s writing is wonderful and easily sets the scenes and fuels the imagination, with great world building and characters I actually cared about! I loved Eros’s journey of self-discovery and how she was written. And Bük, I didn’t like him at first, but by the end I started feeling so protective of this little demon!
Overall, The Demon’s Collar is a really solid start to a series that feels like it’s only going to get better from here!
This was an ARC read, so thank you to Lyra Sterling and publishers for the opportunity to get an early glimpse! It was a pleasure 💜
First I want to thank you for the opportunity to read the Demon's Collar ARC and allowing me to write a review. When Sterling's request for ARC readers was posted on instagram, I knew I had to read it based on tropes alone! -Enemies to lovers -Found Family -Magic -Touch her and die -Forced proximity -Captor and Captive -D&D gone Feral vibes
If that doesn't catch your interest, maybe a couple quotes will! "No....foreplay necessary?" "Your tears are my foreplay." *slams hands down on table* NEED I SAY MORE?!?
Buk, the MMC, is a demon in human flesh. Ero, the FMC, is a lonely bard who travels to find answers about her family. She ends up being captured by Buk were he then places a collar on her to keep her under his control. After that, Sterling will take you on a wild ride where she throws in many plot twist and will leave you on the most epic cliff hanger.
Please read your trigger warning before beginning this read.
If this book does prove safe for you, it's one you don't want to miss. It has just about everything you would want in a dark romance and it's just the beginning of The Bard's Demon. The writing style instantly blew me away and oh boy I wasn't ready for how much it blew me away. The main plot sucks you in enough and provides the perfect mash up of banter, spice, darkness and immersive verbiage into this world. This is a faced paced read and there is a phenomenal push/pull relationship that has you fighting on the edge of your seat, in such a good way. Every character we met even pulled you in and gave you that 'illusion' or forewarning of those books to come.
This is definitely a must read for dark romance lovers, hands down.
The Demon’s Collar by Lyra Sterling is an absolute masterpiece! Right from the get-go, I was completely hooked and couldn’t tear myself away. Sterling crafts a story that’s darkly seductive and emotionally intense, immersing you in a world where danger and desire always intertwine. The characters steal the show with Bůk's magnetic complexity and Ero's journey of strength and discovery. Their chemistry crackles, delivering moments that are both heart-pounding and heart-wrenching. Balancing passion, suspense, and depth, every twist hits hard, every emotional beat rings true. Sterling's lush writing style pulls you in deep, creating scenes that stick with you. A fascinating mix of fantasy and humor keeps the story fresh and engaging. It's a rollercoaster you won't want to get off!
I was lucky enough to be selected for a ARC copy, and I couldn't be more excited! Yes, I was one of those people who heard "demon MMC" and came running for Bůk. This is just about everything I could have hoped for in a dark, sexy fantasy romance!I loved the action and the pacing, you get dropped right in to one of Ero's adventures and Bůk just happens to come along, and you're off to the races. I enjoyed the world building, the factions, and every time Haz gets sworn at.
The spice is satisfying, sexy and well done. Ero + Bůk and his shadows are just plain hot. The magic, the adventure, the mystery, Bůk's personal code... all so good! It's a great, engaging story and I look forward to more in the series!
