Sex, Lies and Fire Escapes

Rate this book
Becca Lovell didn’t mean to fall for him. She just needed a job, a distraction, and maybe a little chaos. What she got was Aiden Carter—sarcastic, infuriating, and completely wrong for her. They worked at a greasy pizza joint. She served tables. He worked the kitchen. They barely spoke… except when they were bickering like a married couple or meeting on the fire escape for fifteen-minute cigarette breaks that started to mean everything. It was supposed to be just sex. Just fun. Just a bad idea waiting to happen. But when attraction turns into obsession, secrets unravel, and old wounds resurface, Becca must confront not only her complicated feelings for Aiden but also the parts of herself she’s tried to outrun—addiction, heartbreak, and the shadow of a father who never really loved her. Told with biting humor, aching vulnerability, and the kind of honesty that stings, Sex, Lies, and Fire Escapes is a slow-burn, messy love story for anyone who’s ever fallen too fast, fought their own demons, or kissed someone just to feel something.

raw, honest, and heartbreaking - if Swear on this life by Renee Carlino and A little life by Hanya Yanagihara had a baby, this would be the creation.

The writing is beautiful, and the raw energy that fills the pages of this debut novel creates a story steeped in desperation, honesty, and most of all, what it feels like to want to be loved when you don't know how to love yourself.

The trauma HITS in this one, and you feel every word and emotion as you traverse the pages of this tender novel about pain, abuse, and love lost and found.

This is not my usual kind of book, but I loved it! I loved they way it was written. The story was insanely good, I wanted to binge it in 24hrs (sadly couldn't). I will say I was not prepared for the triggers to hit so hard so be just be ready the trauma... I will be adding this to my re-read list this year!!

This book had me hooked from the beginning. If I'm being honest, I only ever out this book down because I had to get up and eat dinner, and feed my dog. I read this book in less than a day. Amazing work Bea, I truly love the way you write. It's such a captivating style, and so descriptive when needed.

Sex, Lies and Fire Escapes completely surprised me. It starts as a messy, sarcastic college romance, full of tension and sharp dialogue. But as the story unfolds, it becomes something deeper touching on self-worth, emotional wounds, and the quiet battles we carry into adulthood.

No chapter drags. The pacing is just right, and every emotional twist lands exactly where it should. The physical connection between the characters is present and powerful, but never overshadows the emotional complexity.

This is the kind of novel that lingers. It’s the kind of story I could absolutely see adapted for screen someday, not because it’s flashy, but because it’s real. It has something to say, and it says it beautifully.

Wow. I don't even know what to say, this story was beautiful. Heartbreaking.

When I inquired reading this, I didn't know what to expect. I absolutely loved the cover, the description of the novel was intriguing, but I had no idea that this novel would be one of my five star reads of the year. I thought, at the most, it'd be a four. That was not the case.

It took me weeks, months to finish, not because I didn't enjoy it, but because I was enjoying it too much. I didn't want it to end.

Thank you, Bea, for letting me read this beautiful, tragic, story.

I can't wait to own this in paperback one day. ❤️

Sex, Lies and Fire Escapes has definitely made it to my top choices. It was full of real, raw emotions a.d almost made me cry on multiple occasions. Though it took me a while to read, it wasn't for lack of interest or intrigue. More so life. And possibly needing a break from the more negative raw emotions. If you want a book that is well written, about heartbreak and figuring it out. And about something real. This should definitely be on the top of your list. I fully enjoyed and thoroughly loved this book.
