To my darling daughter, I hope one day you will find this letter and finally know the truth. I beg you, please find it in your heart to forgive me…
Heartbroken from the sudden death of her beloved mother, Becky is surprised to discover her mother left her a key to a house in Ireland she’s never heard about. Desperate to understand why, and with no home left for her in New York, she uproots her and her daughter’s life and travels to the wild Orchid Bay.
But when she arrives, the house is nothing like she pictured. With peeling paint and overgrown with brambles, Becky knows that she can bring this back to life. So she throws herself into converting it into a café with the help of handsome local chef, Ben. As they get closer, she wonders whether his warm grey eyes and kind smile could be the key to mending her broken heart…
But before she can begin to imagine a new life in this magical place, Becky finds an old envelope lodged behind a painting. In the crinkled pages, she learns about a mother begging for forgiveness, doomed romances by the Irish sea and daughters born in secret. Why was this letter hidden in the house, and did her mother ever know it existed?
When Becky finally uncovers the connection between the letter and her own family, it breaks her heart. Will her past finally catch up with her in Orchid Bay, and tear apart the happiness she has found? Or will she and her daughter finally be able to make a home with a new community here in this beautiful place?
An utterly emotional and page-turning read bursting with Irish magic, perfect for fans of Susanne O’Leary, Cathy Kelly and Mary Alice Monroe.
When Becky and her daughter Jen, arrived from the United States to Ireland, they were both grieving deeply with the death of Becky's mum and Jen's granny. Her unexpected death left Becky with insurmountable debts and a key to a home in Ireland that Becky hadn't even heard of. Leaving Manhattan was all she could do, hoping this puzzle of the house now belonging to her, could be solved, and perhaps Becky & Jen could find some peace. Orchid Bay was a beautiful little village by the sea; the views were spectacular - but the house - Coolnamona House - itself was run down, the garden overgrown and the inside, while covered in dust sheets, had dust, spiders and cobwebs anywhere. Jen was not impressed.
But with the help of some caring villagers, the house slowly became a home, with Becky even deciding to open the cafe in the front of the house, as the previous owner had it. Nothing was ever that simple though, and there was heartache to wade through; something from Becky's past which haunted her; while navigating the mysteries of the past. Could Becky & Jen make a future in this delightful place of Orchid Bay?
A Secret Daughter from Ireland is the 1st in a new series - Orchid Bay - by Ann O'Loughlin and I enjoyed it very much. With great characters; elderly, morose, lively, nosy and caring; I am definitely looking forward to #2 in the series. Highly recommended.
With thanks to NetGalley & Bookouture for my digital ARC to read and review.
I received a free copy of, A Secret Daughter from Ireland, by Ann O'Loughlin, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This is the first book in the Orchard Bay series. Becky and her daughter, Jen travel to Ireland after the death of her mother. There are some secrets discovered in this book. Family's have secrets, some good some bad. This was a good read, I did not care for Sadie though, did not think she was a friend, more of a mooch.
New-to-me author Anne O’Loughlin whisked me back to my island birthplace and charmed me with a fabulous story featuring new beginnings, reconciliation, and forgiveness. Many of her characters were burdened by regrets and unable to let go in order to move on with their lives.
At Coolnamona House, in Orchid Bay, County Wicklow, the past and the present collide and allow the seeds of forgiveness to bloom. The main present-day characters are a mother and daughter who desperately need a restart and find it in an unlikely inheritance. Together they unravel the mystery of Coolnamara House and pick up the threads of their lives, weaving a new story for them both. Included in this tapestry are the neighbours, townspeople, and distant relatives. All learn to reshape their future, take the first steps towards forgiveness, and reconcile their old and new life. Multiple mysteries and great pacing kept me engaged.
My only disappointment? This could have taken place anywhere. It lacked the flavour of Ireland that could have enriched the story.
I was gifted this copy and was under no obligation to provide a review.
A Secret Daughter From Ireland is a beautiful heartbreaking story of hope, healing, family roots, belonging, lasting love, awakening, reckoning, reconciliation and reunion—to name a few! It always does my heart ‘good’ to read an Ann O’Loughlin story as her words forever resonate in my being. She covers well topics of family significance, Irish roots, friendship and often difficult life and health experiences. I love the fact that she has started a new series and Orchid Bay Book 1 is a winner. This series is already showing amazing promise with its secrets, divine settings and complex characters that become friends you want to know and remain in contact with. Even the prickly ones in this story are redeemed by the end and you learn to love them warts and all. The descriptions are atmospheric and mesmerising, as they always are in Ann’s books. For the mystery and magic of Ireland are always present.
After Becky’s mother passes away, she receives a surprise inheritance: a house in Ireland. Things are not going so well for her in New York once she has had a traumatic experience that makes her want to run away to Ireland with her daughter to start afresh. Fear lurks in her heart as she worries that her troubles might follow her to the Emerald Isle. Her late mother, though, harboured many surprising secrets that only come to light once she has passed away and Becky has moved to Ireland. What is the connection or the story behind this house on Orchid Bay she has inherited? She must unravel the mystery to understand her mother’s past and even to see forward a future for herself and her daughter. Her time in Ireland at first proves to be challenging as she has a few unfriendly neighbours who pounce on her at every chance possible. But she meets some lovely people too, including a chef who offers his kindness and help plus delightful reprieves in the mountains.
A Secret Daughter From Ireland more than once had me in tears as I was moved by the missed opportunities, the regrets, losses and mistakes of the past women involved noted in letters found on the premises. But the present offers the American inhabitants of the Irish home wonderful twists that had me cheering. For the positive outcomes are welcomed and wished for. Although there is a lot of heavy introspection, there is still a sense of freedom and wholeness throughout the text. For Becky it is an enlightening journey of self-discovery. It leads to a sense of proper placement, a home where she and her daughter can belong. After the loss of her mother and business, and a terrible personal threatening experience, the choice to flee to Ireland, provides direction and answers she never expected. Plus it gives her and her daughter a much craved sense of ‘belonging, safety and stability’ in a house that harbours secrets, surprises and solutions. The ending is wonderful and it made my heart happy to have read another uplifting, honest and genuine story by Ann O’Loughlin. Loved it immensely and highly recommend. 5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Becky’s mother dies and leaves her a surprise deed to a house in Ireland. Becky and her daughter Jen are lost in their grief, so they decide to leave Manhattan for the summer and venture to their new house in the Irish countryside by the sea.
Though there’s absolutely no shortage of drama, the mother-daughter pair are welcomed by the town wholeheartedly. Deep, healing bonds are formed between family and friends. I really grew to care for many of the characters. And the ending was poignant and perfect ❤️
This was a nice change of pace from my typical reads. I can vividly imagine myself having a scone at the cafe and then strolling along Orchid Bay. Ann O’Loughlin really has me daydreaming about moving to Ireland 🥰
My ARC Book Review: Becky sadly loses her mum, drowning in grief, she suddenly and unexpectedly inherits a house in Ireland, in a place totally unknown to her. She wants a new beginning and moves herself and her daughter to the beautiful Orchid Bay.
However, when she arrives, the house she walks into is not what she expected!!
It’s overgrown and needs all the TLC. Although it brings all the challenges, Becky relishes it. Ben, a local restaurant owner and chef, helps her renovate the property into something livable and also a cafe.
But Orchid Bay holds more than just new beginnings. Becky then finds an old envelope and an old painting. Revelations reveal themselves, and the story becomes packed with secrets exposed, hidden romances, and tragic family fallouts. Alongside that, Becky’s family’s past becomes clearer, too.
I’m not usually a fan of contemporary romance or fiction, but I saw the blurb for this and knew I had to read it. I’m so glad I did. This was a heartfelt and emotional story about grief, healing, and the bravery to start over.
🌊 A great read for anyone who loves small-town charm, lots of emotion, and intrigue.
In this captivating story by Ann O’Loughlin, life in Manhattan was getting harder and harder for Becky. Despite doing the best to give her daughter Jen the best life possible, finances were becoming increasingly difficult to control. Still reeling from the sudden death of her mother, Becky was just trying to hold things together.
Among her mother’s things Becky discovers a key to a house in Ireland. They were New Yorkers, so why did her mother possess the key, a key that went to an address there in Ireland? Before she could stop herself, Becky decides to pack things up and headed to Coolnamona House in Orchid Bay with Jen. This sudden move could be the beginning of a new life for both Becky and Jen. However, something more is waiting for Becky once she arrives.
Becky has found a series of letters. While reading these letters, the pieces of a puzzle begin to form a picture. This was all while unraveling a mystery. Sorting that could have the potential to shape her future. But it soon becomes clear that Becky is really in need of another sort of healing. Not just because of finances. Not just because of grief. But because of a painfully tragic experience that life across the world might help her to forget.
Becky and Jen find a mixed bag of company when they arrive. Becky meets a kind chef named Ben and Jen meets his son. There a warmth that is felt nearly right away. This proves to be a blessing, because that house, that inheritance Becky gained after finding that key, also introduced people that weren’t so happy with her sudden appearance in their village.
This story features relatable characters, particular Jen, who clearly showed resilience and support. Becky, as her mother, could definitely decide to give her own life a reset. I admire Jen’s unwavering support for her mother and the strong bond they share. As a mother to three girls (and boys), I can relate to the complexities of their relationship. I appreciate how the story allows me to connect with it on a personal level, even when the circumstances don’t mirror my own. Ms. O’Loughlin’s compelling writing makes the story truly resonate with me. I eagerly anticipate reading her next book.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
After the death of her mother, Becky discovers, in her will that she has inherited a house located in the quaint little town of Orchid Bay, Ireland. This unexpected surprise leads Becky into a fresh start she so desperately needs. She takes her teen daughter Jen, leaves New York, and embarks into a new life on the Irish coastline.
Becky is determined to renovate the house which is in need of great repair. She meets Ben, a local chef, who offers to help her. As they are well into the renovation process, Becky finds an envelope behind an old painting containing a gold mine of secrets about the town and the people in it.
In “A Secret Daughter from Ireland” by Ann O’Laughlin, the reader is taken on a suspenseful gripping journey, full of twists and turns. The descriptions of the Irish coastline in this novel will have readers inhaling the salt water breeze and listening to the waves crash in the distance.
I adored the characters throughout the story. I could relate to them, making them feel like family. This phenomenal story hits all the feels, and I look forward to the next installment in this series. I recommend this book to anyone seeking an extraordinary and heartwarming read.
Ann O’Loughlin writes honestly and from the heart about grief, love, and belonging. Following her mother’s death, Becky’s path is uncertain, painful, but hopeful. Her dynamic with her teenage daughter brings authenticity and warmth, illustrating the generational conflicts during unexpected life shifts. Becky’s search for truth and healing is relatable for readers.
The book’s beauty is enhanced by the setting. Orchid Bay, a small Irish coastal town, is vibrant. O’Loughlin portrays small-town life’s rhythm, its quiet kindness and gossip, and how it offers comfort and secrets. The descriptions make you want to visit and linger.
The narrative progresses as the reader uncovers letters, memories, and hidden truths, maintaining their curiosity. The puzzle of Becky’s mother’s past is revealed slowly and deliberately. It’s not a thriller, but the emotional reveals are satisfying and often moving. Every new detail helps Becky understand herself and her mother’s hidden life better.
The novel’s core theme is home, exploring its discovery and its foundations in love and forgiveness. Becky’s choice to move and connect feels like a chance at renewal. Despite all the pain, the book offers readers a feeling of hope and completion.
Becky's life takes an unexpected turn after her mother's death when she discovers a mysterious key to a rundown house in Ireland. She takes her teenage daughter and leaves behind her life in New York. Becky meets some characters in the small town including Masie, Bella, and Ben. Through hidden letters, she learns more about her inherited house while becoming a part of the community. There were a few I terrines storylines that fit together perfectly.
This is a heartwarming story of discovery, love, and the power of starting over, It is a touching journey of healing and hope for Becky and the other characters. I loved Becky, and the ending- well, it had all the feels! I’m looking forward to going “back” to Orchid Bay. Many thanks to the author, Bookouture and NetGalley for a complimentary copy of the book. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own. #ASecretDaughterFromIreland #AnnOLoughlin
Becky loses her mom and then discovers a mysterious key to a house in Ireland she never knew existed. With her daughter in tow, she heads to Orchid Bay, and instead of some cozy cottage, she finds a rundown, bramble-covered house. But here’s where the magic happens: she starts fixing it up, turns it into a café, and slowly builds a new life surrounded by kindhearted locals and yes, a certain handsome chef!
Then comes the twist: Becky finds a hidden letter tucked behind a painting, one that unravels a story of forbidden love, secret daughters, and heartbreak. The way the past collides with Becky’s present had me hooked until the very last page.
This story is atmospheric, emotional, and full of hope. It's about forgiveness, starting over, and finding family in unexpected places. Plus, the Irish coast setting made me want to pack my bags immediately.
The story follows Becky, as she leaves New York after the death of her mother and moves to Ireland to live in a house that she didn't know her mother had...
Naturally we have secrets, lies and dark family twists afoot...
I really loved Becky. She is a Mum trying to do right by her daughter in the face of grief and adversity. She is incredibly story and just a great character - I became very invested in how she deals with her past plus that of her family's.
The story itself is a beautifully written contemporary novel exploring the complex world of family secrets all while teying to salvage and renovate a rather decrepid house!
I loved all the strong women that featured and it make for an enthralling read!
If you love contemporary fiction, then you will love this!
When Becky's mother dies suddenly, drowning in grief, she discovers she's also been given a house .in Ireland. With nothing to lose and her teenage daughter in tow, she moves to Ireland and into the house. As she settles into town, renovates the house, and reinvents herself, she discovers her connections to the house.
I really enjoyed this story, and I'm looking forward to this new series. It's
- found family - second chances - small town romance - living with regrets - the best of friends - small town living - family mysteries - strong women - community
Orchard Bay sounds like a wonderful place to live. I'd love to enjoy tea and scones overlooking that bay.
Thanks to @bookouture, @netgalley, and the author for this arc
A Secret Daughter from Ireland is the latest gripping novel from new-to-me author, Ann O’Loughlin.
Becky had moved with her daughter to Ireland in order to escape issues back home in New York whilst also looking at the house her mother left her when she died. She has agreed with Jen, her teenage daughter, that if they don’t love it, they will return to NY in a few months. Of course, life isn’t that simple and there are a number of surprises on the way.
I absolutely loved this story and was glued to it from beginning to end! I loved all the characters, so relatable. I must admit to getting through a box of tissues! I will most certainly look out for more of Ann’s novels.
📆 single timeline. 👀 single POV 🐢 -🐇 medium paced 💬 "Love sustains us when the rest of the world has gone mad."
'A Secret Daughter from Ireland' was a sweet story of new beginnings, family secrets and the strength of female friendships. I have to admit that I found the secret a little obvious, and guessed very early on what the connection between Becky and Orchid Bay was. But there was still plenty to enjoy about the story.
Orchid Bay sounds like a wonderful place, I wish I could visit it and have a coffee and scones in the cafe over the bay, whilst chatting to the lovely ladies who live there.
I'm looking forward to finding out what happens next for the residents, I sense romance will be in the air.
As always with this author’s books you're immediately invested in the characters. A grand easy read, perfect for curling up with on a cold Autumn day. We meet Becky and her daughter Jen as they leave New York where they have spent their entire lives for a small town in Ireland. A whole host of characters join them on their discovery of their past. Not just for Becky & Jen heartaches are laid to rest and questions answered. A great start to what I hope will be a continuing series because these folk have way more to give and I can't wait to catch up with them all again.
What a wonderful story, I loved every word. The author takes you thru a lot and every part just drags you into the heart of the story. I could picture all these wonderful Characters dressed in their gowns, a truly wonderful read, this author knows how to pull you into the story and “see” it clearly.
I really enjoyed book 1 in this series watching Becky and Jen travel a very rocky road to finding their extended family and Father/Grandfather they never knew they had. I'm looking forward to reading book 2 in this series and will definitely recommend this book to everyone.
#ASecretDaughterfromIreland #NetGalley. I was glued to this book from the very first page. Such an emotional rollercoaster of a story, I just kept turning the pages late into the night. The book was well written with relatable and likeable (for the most part!) characters. The background of the beautiful coast of Ireland was an added bonus. I will definitely look for more books by this author.
✅My thoughts: Main characters are mother and daughter, Becky and Jen. After Becky’s mother passes away, she discovers a key to a house in Ireland….a house she had no knowledge of. With everything going on, Becky decides to go see what this is house has to do with her family. Her daughter, Jen, is not happy about going to Ireland. Lots of secrets arise once they arrive. Can Becky figure out what is going on? Family secrets abound… This is very emotional and heartwarming read.
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
I liked the descriptions of the house and the bay. At times I felt the dialogue didn't match the actions of the characters, a little overblown, I guess. But, the plot was good, interesting how Hilda was finally revealed as Laura.
Grandmother, daughter, granddaughter. Everyone has secrets and revealing them can lead to life altering experiences. Characters are like family. I loved being a part of their lives.
This was a wonderful story, I was somewhat disappointed that as great as the plot was I couldn’t get enough description on the character’s appearance. I wasn’t sure about ages, or if they were of slight build or heavy.
I really liked the characters in this book, and could picture the location being really beautiful. The story is easy to follow and I enjoyed the way it tied in together really well.
A lovely story of family and belonging. Beautifully vivid descriptions of Orchid Bay, I feel like I've visited the cafe and walked in the mountains and along the shore.
A Secret Daughter from Ireland by Ann O’Loughlin took me to Orchid Bay, County Wicklow, Ireland along with Becky and her teenage daughter, Jen. I felt for Becky who was taking one hit after another. I cannot imagine arriving in Ireland with hopes for new start and finding your new home in a state of disrepair. Jen, being an angsty teenager, was little help in the beginning. She does love her mother and support her. The townspeople were a quirky bunch. They added humor to the story. I find the characters to be relatable, and they drive the story. Becky is curious as to why her mother owned Coolnamona House and she hopes that the house holds the answers. A Secret Daughter from Ireland is a story about secrets, new beginnings, family drama, unexpected revelations, romance, reconciliations, and forgiveness. I wanted more local color in the story, so that I would feel transported to Ireland. I enjoyed the uplifting ending that left me smiling. A Secret Daughter from Ireland is the first heartwarming tale in Orchid Bay series, and I am curious to see what will happen next in Orchid Bay.
Enjoyed it, although it wasn't my favorite book by the author. Parts of it reminded me of previous books, especially "Escape to the Irish Village.' There seemed to be something missing for me. A chapter would end and the story would jump to something else. The biggest problem for me was Becky. I just didn't care for her. Why didn't she continue to design dresses? I'm not sure how she can pay bills by just selling cookies and tea. I loved the mystery about Laura. It wasn't hard to guess how Hilda became in possession of the house. It took Becky a bit longer to figure it out. Even when the people show up about the DNA results, Becky still seems clueless. I enjoyed the friendship between everyone. Becky found wonderful friends in Iris, Bella, Ben and Maisie. They would do anything for Becky and Jen. Iris even supports Sadie in New York City. Even though Regina Reilly died alone, her house managed to bring so many people together. The house was full of secrets and kept them well, until Becky finds Regina's hidden letters.
Definitely recommend the book. I felt like I was right there with Becky and Jen as they got the house ready. Most of the people were lovely and immediately welcomed the women to the village. Coolnamona House sounded like a beautiful place to live with all the gardens and view of the bay. Plus, the house was full of furniture, jewelry and clothes. Loved the characters, writing style and story. Look forward to reading more books by the author.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bookouture through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
