With a twisty, intricate storyline and multiple morally gray characters, The New Neighbors easily kept my eyes glued to the pages. You see, not only did the onion-like plot provide an edge-of-your-seat read, but the slow roll-out of the two interwoven mysteries made for a tense, unputdownable story from beginning to end. Thanks to multiple timelines and POVs, the many twists and turns kept me guessing until right before almost every reveal. Yes…I did figure some of them out, but the uneasy atmosphere and ratcheting pace meant that I didn’t care in the slightest and happily went along with Lena’s nail-biting attempts at amateur sleuthing. A flawed character who I often wanted to shake good and hard, I was riveted as she raced to find out all of the answers about her new side-eye-inducing neighbors, who gave me definite chills.
The only issue I had with this one-sitting read was the slightly meh ending. You see, despite it being fast-paced and adrenaline-fueled, it not only felt rushed but somewhat eye-roll-worthy. With an over-the-top conclusion that, while fitting, also required me to suspend all disbelief, it was unfortunately a bit disappointing by the time I reached the last page. That being said, I still had a blast riding shotgun with Lena and them all. Giving me plenty of neighborhood drama as well as a protagonist struggling with her very own demons, there was a definite Hitchcockian vibe, which was underscored by the many classic movie references. So if you love dark secrets, twisted characters, and an underlying sense of paranoia, grab this book now. Just be sure to schedule enough time to read it in one single sitting. Rating of 4 stars.
SYNOPSIS:
They seem like the perfect couple. But what are they hiding?
When Lena overhears a conversation between her next-door-neighbors she thinks she must have misheard.
The Morgans are a kind, retired couple who recently moved to their sleepy suburban street in Bristol where nothing ever happens. But to Lena it sounded very much like they were planning a crime.
Her family and friends tell her she must be mistaken. Yet Lena can’t stop thinking about that strange conversation. What if they really are about to do something terrible?
What if she can prevent it?
