Rate this book
In this portal fantasy, an accountant reincarnated as a fae assassin must battle, barter, and grind to survive in a world filled with magical dangers.

When forensic accountant SJ is crushed by a rogue tree on her way home from the local pub, her death is as absurd as it is abrupt. But fate has a twisted sense of instead of being sentenced to eternal oblivion, SJ’s reborn in Amathera—a vibrant fantasy landscape full of magic, monsters, and a game-like System that really wishes she hadn’t read the fine print.

Armed with her sassy and overly sarcastic AI companion, Dave, and the questionable skills of a fae assassin, SJ is thrust into this mystical new world. But there’s one she never agreed to the terms and conditions, and now she’s the one person operating completely free of the System’s rules. Drawing the attention of local gods, dragons, and everything in between, she’s destined to become an Amatherean celebrity.

With oddities such as high-level enemies and unique gear drops at every turn, finding her footing will be no easy task in this place where reputation matters. SJ will need Dave’s guidance if she wants to level up and survive the challenges thrown her way. Only then can she help the inhabitants of her quaint starter town of Killic and begin to uncover the complex mysteries of Amathera.

And as outside pressures mount, SJ’s starting to realise her death was only the first glitch in the System . . .

This was the first book in Bosloe’s The Amatherean Tales series. It is a mix of portal fantasy and old-school LitRPG. It delivers a bit of action, adventure, humour, and of course, some classic levelling up in power!

The setup was pretty standard, but I’m not complaining as it was highly entertaining. Our lead character, SJ, was a 27-year-old forensic accountant back on Earth. She is granted a second-chance life on Amatherea after being accidentally crushed to death by a falling tree in her old life. She decides to spice things up in her new world by becoming a Fae Assassin. She gets stuck with a defective AI Administrator during the between-life phase and, being a forensic accountant, actually reads the Terms of Service on her new life contract and rejects them! She goes into her new life with some extra perks she negotiated from the System, alongside an insufferable AI companion. The premise was actually incredibly fun!

Once SJ landed in her new world, the pacing was actually fairly sedate. She levelled up a bit in her isolated starter zone, then moved on to her starter town and just settled into life in Amatherea. SJ levelled up, got caught up in some adventures, and met some of the locals, but I really enjoyed the fact that things did not ramp up too quickly. SJ is a bit of a special snowflake, so she attracts attention and unusual events, but I liked the fact that the stakes remained fairly small-scale. A lot of LitRPG and progression fantasy can fall into the trap of having the lead character level up to God status and face world-apocalypse events far too quickly, killing the emotional stakes. This book has completely avoided rushing things, at least in this introductory instalment.

This book had its flaws. The writing was OK but not entirely compelling, and the plot felt familiar and solid, but not overly exciting. I did like SJ as a lead character; she was likeable and easy to root for. We met a bunch of support characters, but I never really warmed to any of them, which I see as a slight issue, especially if it does not change in the next instalment. The AI companion, "Dave," was mostly there for comic relief, but I have to admit I found the humour in this series a bit hit-and-miss, finding Dave more annoying than endearing. The best way to describe the humour and tone in this story is to say it is very anime in style.

I recently read Deadworld Isekai, and this was similar in quality. While this book had a slightly more interesting world, Deadworld Isekai had the more enjoyable and genuinely likeable "annoying" AI companion.

The other big flaw was the fact that my attention wandered a bit more in the final third of the book than in the first two-thirds. It was a bit of a disappointment that the story ended on a bit of a lull.

It is also worth noting this world had the feel of an old-school LitRPG with full stats and level-ups. The world had the mechanics and worldbuilding of a game but was also supposed to be completely real for SJ and the natives that inhabited the place.

All in all, this was a readable LitRPG, but nothing overly exciting or compelling. I liked it enough that I’ll probably give the second book a chance.

Rating: 3.5 Stars. I’d have been tempted to round up if the final third had not been the weakest part of the book.

Audio Note: This was narrated by Rebecca Woods. I think she did a decent job with the audio. She was earnest enough with SJ and tried her best to breathe some life into the annoying Dave.

DNF. This is one of those instances where I feel like Goodreads is trying to gaslight me. What do you MEAN that this book has mostly 5 star ratings?? Did anyone actually read it? My standards are not very high for an entertaining book and this still didn't clear them.

Wherein one of the most awkward assemblages of English letters (SJ) gets "squished" unceremoniously by a tree (lol) and wakes up inside a reincarnation chamber and is introduced to Administrator Dave (the most insufferably useless AI knowledge companion) who is promptly fired for being useless and then reinstated (because SJ felt that good ole English guilt at being an inconvenience to anyone) and proceeds to continue contribute essentially nothing despite allegedly being more than 7,000 years old and a talking database. SJ, in a brief but quickly passing bout of power-gamey cleverness, chooses her new race as fae (for the stat bonuses) and as her class decides she's going to be an assassin.....except for justice. The great and the good well known for contract killing, of course.

What did me in was the attempt at quippy dialogue that went something like this:

Dave *says something fairly self explanatory*
SJ *repeats it as a question*
Dave *calls her stupid*
SJ *gets mad*
Dave *apologizes very backhandedly*
SJ *asks about the thing again*

And so on. Ad nauseam. For every. Single. Thing. I read 40-something pages and it was just walls of dialogue sentences. So no, I'll not be continuing.

Fun but also hyper unrealistic

While I did enjoy the book, both in the story, characters and progression. At times I had to face palm of just how dumb it could get. While SJ is quite slow and stupid at times with Dave having to explain basic ideas to her or remind her of things. She isn't all that bad. Wish she'd inspect more stuff to level the skill and make more reasonable choices but oh well.

The hyper unrealistic stuff can be skipped over with a roll of the eyes. If want an example? So there is a list of playable races, classes they can have, then those classes have specializations. Now both Natives and Reborns both have classes and what not but let's just stick to reborns. There has been 25 MILLION reborn so far. Currently on the world around 150,000 alive. Now everyone makes it a big deal and never heard of that she picked not just her race, class and that specialization. People with tons of knowledge are acting like it's a first ever. Really? Thats like saying in World of Warcraft with 25 million players, no one picked an undead cleric with a shadow specialization. As if there was never one and they are the first ever of 25 million players to pick that. There weren't unlimited options for races and classes or specializations. There were like 10 races, 10 classes and 6 specializations for each class. Not counting the billions of natives, out of the reborns. All the people of her class never ever picked what she did? REALLY? That's how hyper unrealistic it is.

SJ is pretty slow and stupid at times, unable to connect simple dots. Yet everyone treats her like she's some sort of genius because all the other reborn apparently just pick 'orc fighter' then charge dragons on day one to die? Apparently all the other reborn are less intelligent than 6 year olds. Making her basic average intelligence seem like Mastermind solve it all chosen one material.

Now if you can ignore that and not be bothered by everyone hyping up SJ when she really isn't that great. Just enjoy the book, the adventures, the progression and world. Then it's a great book.

I just had to read it in the mind set of alternate earth where she came from where the common human has the intelligence of a very stupid gorilla. Because even a gorilla would know not to charge at deadly huge monsters.

Worth a read even with how unrealistic it is at times or how needlessly complex she makes things some times for no reason. Instead of simply saying 'Oh I read a book on it and that doesn't match it at all' she will instead go into some big complicated lie with many round about ways to get to the point for no reason. Which just makes her seem even more stupid when 'I read it in a book' would be more realistic and easier believed.

Bosloe came out in his debut novel and crushed it.

SJ is such a beautiful written and developed female lead character. Her charm and witty sarcasm are her highlights that shine through her approach to each situation that comes before her. I normally would not read a female led character, but I genuinely enjoyed how Bosloe portrayed SJ.

Dave her Ai assistant is nothing short than an excellent complement to the entire story. Dave is a clear inspiration from Skippy found in the SciFi hit series Expeditionary Force. SJ and Dave's connection is the foundation of this comic filled fantasy adventure. They were the glue that kept me tied into this story.

Bosloe had a vision for this story and build a strong foundation. A creative approach as a FAE Assassin, clever, new, refreshing. (Audiobook specific) This was my first full novel where Rebecca Woods took the lead, and she was nothing short of stunning. Her range was impressive; her care of the characters and approach was perfect.

OFOTDN is a perfect addition to my bookshelf and a series I will happily be continuing. I highly recommend you give this a shot. The ending to book 1 was a giant hint that there is so much more to come in this series.

Bosloe sir, well done! One Flew Over The Dragon’s Nest was a fantastic, cozy, funny, exciting and heartwarming read! The characters are immensely lovable and I became immediately invested in their lives! SJ is squished by a tree and in death is reborn in the land of Amathera. Upon waking she a sarcastic AI(Dave) who has recoded part of his programming to allow himself more freedom. When SJ is asked to sign the terms and conditions she becomes the first person to ever actually read them! Choosing not to sign them leads to some unprecedented happenings once SJ starts her new life! A God (Fizzlewick), a massive blue dragon(Bob, I Could not have picked a better name myself🤣) and a whole cast of exquisitely written characters bring this amazing story to life! The world building is spot on! I can see myself having an ale at the Hoglings Arm with Setu and Gary playing cards! I can imagine making a cozy home in the cottage in the valley! I am so excited to read book 2! If you have not read One Flew Over The Dragon’s Nest yet I very highly suggest you stop what your doing right now and go get a copy! Why are you still reading this??? GO GET YOUR COPY!! Bosloe thank you so much for this wonderful work of art! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

One Flew Over the Dragon’s Nest is one of those rare LitRPG adventures that manages to be both hilarious and surprisingly heartfelt. From the moment SJ a forensic accountant with a knack for sarcasm gets flattened by a tree and wakes up as a fae assassin, I knew I was in for something special.

The world of Amathera is rich and vividly imagined, full of danger, magic, and plenty of absurd humor. SJ’s banter with her AI companion, Dave, had me laughing out loud more than once, and the clever “glitch in the System” twist keeps the story feeling fresh and unpredictable.

What really impressed me, though, was how much character growth and emotion are woven between the laughs and epic battles. SJ’s struggle to find her place in a world where she doesn’t play by the rules adds real depth to the adventure.

Fast-paced, witty, and full of creative worldbuilding this is a must-read for LitRPG and fantasy fans alike.

I really enjoyed this book. The story is character-driven in a way that feels genuine, with strong development and relationships that grow naturally over time. SJ and Dave have a great back-and-forth that’s both fun and believable, with plenty of small moments that made them feel real.

The system mechanics were clever and tied meaningfully into the characters’ progress. It wasn’t just about gaining power but about how those changes reflected their choices and personalities. The worldbuilding was rich and immersive, with enough detail to paint a full picture without slowing things down.

The pacing struck a good balance between action and quieter, reflective scenes. Everything felt well-placed and purposeful, and the result was a story that kept me engaged from start to finish. Looking forward to seeing where book two takes things.

WOW!!!

I really enjoy this series! Bosloe has combined a sarcastic AI with a strong female main character, completely transforming the story and crafting an engaging new universe. Our heroine brings intelligence and kindness that help to challenge the system and stir things up. As she navigates this new world, she encounters fascinating characters and forms distinctive and unexpected friendships. The world-building draws you in, and the vivid descriptions keep you engaged, making you feel part of the setting. Each new character offers a fresh viewpoint, encouraging the reader to become emotionally connected to their journey. I strongly recommend this LitRPG series to anyone who appreciates unique systems, immersive worlds, interesting characters, and fantasy role-playing.

Bosloe has become an auto buy author for me!!

I feel like dragon quest had a baby with LOTR and the child is growing up to be Wolverine with a greater sense of humor. The two MCs, Dave and SJ compliment each beautifully , the dialogue between each other is a beautiful creation of humor....and totally migraines for each other. The world building is beautifully orchestrated in a gradual way, the gamelit components remind me of Dragon quest, or the monsters to an extent, but is completely original and fresh. I've placed this book in my collections close to my heart and can't wait for the sequel, I never would of thought a Fae assassin would so grasp my attention, but the author has such skill of creating authentic characters with such flair. It has been placed with my Mount Rushmore of awesomeness

SJ was a very likable character, with a beautiful personality. The snarky AI was entertaining. It was nice to see their relationship transition from disdainful indifference to unexpected affection throughout the story.

The side characters were interesting, with a nice twist on the relationship between the undead and necromancers.

This was a fairly low-stress story, which was a nice break from the usual formula of heroes saving the world from unspeakably evil antagonists. There were enough interesting twists and tantalizing hints backed by lore to keep it interesting.

2.5/5

There are moments I genuinely loved between SJ and Dave the AI. They were funny and the sarcasm was peak. However, I found everything else so boring and lazy. There could have been so much more depth and building added. It relied too much on me knowing everything about video games to enjoy the story. While yes its a reincarnation/video game style book, it could have done with more world building. Matt Pivots does this beautifully with his books. I won't be continuing the series as there are better isekai books out there. Beautiful cover just not the best execution

A fun idea with horrible execution. The setting is lazy with an over reliance on game mechanics to explain anything. This causes a complete disconnect as nothing seems real. The entire quest system is just a cheap way to provide an exposition dump. The worst thing that runs the book is the character Dave. The snark and useless attitude break every dramatic situation and keep you from ever getting invested. This is just a failure across the board.

horrible dialogue

I think sssy and annoying should be outlawed in books. You quite literally spend pages upon pages on useless dialogue and bad attitudes that contribute literally nothing to the story. In fairness the author has it in the description, but unfortunately I still have to rate this book low because of the sheer amount of wasted time on forced antagonistic banter.

Interesting and fun

It’s nice to find a story that’s slightly different from the run of the mill LitRPG and combines a good story, interesting development ideas and a little subtle humour. This is one of them, at least from the first book, but I have high hopes for what will come later.
I like that the plot armour is part of the story it blends well.

This is a very character-driven LitRPG, and that’s what hooked me right away. The relationship between SJ and the AI (Dave) is easily the highlight. Their banter is sharp, sarcastic, and genuinely funny, which made the whole experience even more engaging.

The LitRPG elements felt well balanced. You get stats, leveling, and progression without it turning into an info dump, and I really appreciated the mix of action with quieter slice-of-life moments. It keeps the pacing feeling fresh instead of grindy.

As someone newer to the genre, the worldbuilding felt unique and easy to get into, and the characters are fleshed out enough that you actually care about what happens to them.

Overall, this is a lighthearted, entertaining read with a great mix of humor, character focus, and progression. Definitely a standout for me.

The Start of a Great Journey

This was a LitRPG where the progression was gradual and realistic (as much as can be in a fantasy world setting). By the end of the book the main character, SJ, did not have demigod like powers. What she did have, she gained through practice. It has a semi-cozy pace with a ton of humor throughout. I can’t wait to continue the series!

Fun book

This is the first LitRPG book I have read and it was very enjoyable. The characters were all fun to read about and by the end of the book, I was invested not only in the life of the main character but also many of the side characters as well.

A nice change to the normal litrpg storyline

This story has some nice twists to the more conventional litrpg storyline. A fey assassin as the main character is a nice touch. I also like the cover art, it's not the normal doom and gloom I see on most fantasy books.

Fascinating Fantasy

Interesting take on LitRPG, forensic accountant before dying helps her have the skill set to crunch the numbers in her new life. Fun characters. Lone the idea of no one quite knowing what to do with her.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Unlike many LitRPGs it actually takes its time for both plot and character development rather than rushing things. The world is interesting, characters have personality, and it's well written in general.
