As the centuries-long war that has torn the magical world apart takes a new turn, young and innocent Aelys finds herself trapped by her father's loyalty to the powerful and feared dark wizard, Darkvis, when he offers her hand in marriage to his heir.
Mattheo, molded by his father to be the perfect soldier, loathes the very idea of marrying Aelys. Torn between his desire to please the dark wizard and his hatred for his unexpected bride, he’ll be forced to make choices that will form the path towards his future.
Whereas, the young witch hides many secrets that only her father and Darkvis seem to know, but which could prove crucial in the dark wizard's gloomy victory in this war that has lasted far too long.
Book 1 in The Hollow Reign series Can be read as a standalone
I finished proofreading 'Sold to the Devil' written by Clara Delage. This dark romance Harry Potter retelling is her writer's debut. It's also book one in the Hollow Reign series, which is an interconnected standalone series.
"If he wants to play this game, then we'll play."
As a die hard Harry Potter fan it got me all excited when I heard that Clara was writing a Harry Potter retelling. I not only got to read it, but I was lucky to be among the first readers. Doing a retelling can be tricky, but Clara definitely did not dissapoint. Bringing a strong magical story that will definitely surprise you. Full of mystery, plottwists, love, fighting and smut.
"I may be a surrogate for the Rigast heir, but I'll never be his fucking toy."
The story is about Aelys and Mattheo. Mattheo is the son and heir from the Dark Mage. Aelys' father is a loyal follower from the Dark Mage and has a lot of influence. Both fathers decide that it would be beneficial for Aelys and Mattheo to be together, so they plan an arranged marriage. Both Aelys and Mattheo don't know about the hidden reasons for this marriage, the question is when and how they will find out.
"He stopped being my enemy and became my protector."
This story plays out in a magical and Harry Potter-like world full of magical creatures. It's written vividly and is very comfortable to read. I truly wanted to know what would happen next. The characters are strong and I grew to love them. Mattheo being the dark bad boy and Aelys nothing less than an angel. Both growing while the story developed. I really felt the tension of them being around the Dark Mage.
"He looks like a dark god."
The story also has an extra layer. Clara used important themes to bring extra depth into the story. If you are sensitive to themes like different kinds of loss and abuse, I would definitely recommend checking out the trigger warnings before reading. I really think these themes make the story more special and I very much look forward to the second book. I give the story five stars.
Ok, let's start, This story swept me into a beautifully imagined magical world, full of tension, secrets, and dark enchantment. A magical world torn apart by war and dark alliances. The atmosphere is rich, the pacing tight and the central mystery surrounding Aelys is genuinely compelling. I think the main characters are young souls forced into roles they didn’t quite choose.
Aelys. Aelys is a standout... mysterious, quietly powerful and layered with emotional depth. She is way too pure for this world but she has no mercy at the end. She is caught in a web of loyalty, secrets and pain. Her character is so vulnerable that I found myself rooting for her from the very first page. (Girl... kick his damn ass once or twice.)
Mattheo. Mattheo, the male lead, was harder for me to connect with AT FIRST. His coldness and internal conflict are well-written, but I often found myself wishing for more vulnerability AND I definitely got that as I read! His complexity adds to the story’s tension, and I can see how his arc might resonate with readers who enjoy morally gray characters. He is a dark MF and the girls loving dark and mean boys will absolutely love him.
Darkvis echoes Voldemort in his role as a feared, manipulative figure whose influence corrupts families, politics and personal relationships. He’s not just a villain—he’s a symbol of power and fear. It's his fault Mattheo is how he is, let's not forget that!! :( Mattheo is shaped by his father’s expectations at all times in the first part of the book. And it made me so sad for the things he was made to do!!
I like the story! It's a captivating read with strong visuals and emotional stakes. If you love dark fantasy with a touch of really dark romance and a lot of mystery, this novel is worth diving into.
Congratulations to the author! <3

As an ARC reader I went through this story very quickly. It was pretty good though. I do not want to post spoilers as the author hasn’t officially published the book yet so I will give you a very short review. If you enjoy mages, magic schools and lots of spice this is a good fit for you. Please read the trigger warnings before reading. I love how they included media within the story, it added to the experience and I would love to know what happens next.
Short summary: Aelys is part of an unbelievable magical world. Full of witches and wizards, she is staying by the side of the Dark Mage. She has to show him her obedience and the only way is to marry his first born and to give him an heir. Will she accept this marriage?
Personal impressions: I liked this story as a Harry Potter retelling and the characters were really complex, but there were some things that bothered me while I was reading the book. This story is about the villains side, having the theme of ,,What if the villain gets the ‘’happy ending’’? And I totally understand that, but there were some things that disturb me. Some I can talk about, some I cannot because I will give you spoilers, but feel free do DM me if you do not care about that.
I didn’t like Mattheo. Him, as the male protagonist of the story had a behavior that I can’t get over. He is the perfect boyfriend, his attitude towards Aelys was really cute after they became a couple. But before that… His violence towards her is something that I didn’t enjoy at all. Also, the way she always says that ‘’It’s okay’’ after he is violent or he does something negative to her. I didn’t find any of those scenes okay at all, and I’m not into that at all, but there may be some readers that like this side of the characters. I would’ve like for Aelys to end up with either Tom or even Arthur.
Other things that annoyed me were some that made me a little bit confused. Even thought, the descriptions were really good, there were some repetitive things that got me bored at the beginning. Also, I would’ve liked more originality when it comes to the Academy and the class the characters were put it. Yes, I understand the Harry Potter retelling part, but the only things that was changed in the ,,House choosing’’ was the dagger. Another thing that got me confused it that only the Rigast could use the telepathy powers and then, out of nowhere, Aelys could do it too? How was that possible? I have no idea.
Things that I like were the descriptions that really got me in the story and made me live the events along side the characters (one of the reasons why Mattheo wasn’t my cup of tea). The aesthetic and the events were really good, too! The book has a lot of potential and I’m really excited for what’s to come next in this series.
Sold to the Devil by has a very compelling event, right off the bat, that drew me into this magical world and suspicious characters. The idea of a father selling his daughter to the son of a dark lord, and then being thrust into a new magical school to complete a "task" for Darkvis, is intriguing. I especially appreciated getting to see the “dark side” of this classic good-vs-evil conflict, it felt refreshing to me.
The story could really shine with refinement in the early chapters. Many of the chapters, such as the spin-the-bottle, parties, extended dorm conversations felt more like filler than plot or character development. I think by trimming and refining, it will help in giving the story momentum and allow the characters to have defining moments of growth and development. I had a hard time staying invested, just wanting to skip past it and find out what happens. Nancy, for instance, comes off as a negative influence without a clear purpose in the story, by giving her a stronger motivation or backstory will allow more natural connection to Nancy.
Similarly, Mattheo’s shift from angry and abusive to suddenly sweet could have eased that bridge if given clearer buildup or internal conflict. Mattheo’s friends also blend together a bit; I found myself forgetting who was who. Adding memorable moments tied to their allegiance to Darkvis, could help them stand out and deepen the world building. Tom is a standout. His escalating behavior and presence are portrayed with chilling and unsettling accuracy. There is a curiousity that builds within me about Tom, frantically searching the pages for answers. I will leave you to find out for yourself.
Clara, you have a fantastic story with strong elements, and I believe by trimming filler conversations, strengthening character arcs, and expanding backstories, it will improve the overall story progression. I appreciate you allowing me to read and review Sold to the Devil, I cant wait to find out what will happen next!
Thanks the author for the arc This book fells like a fanfiction of Harry Potter so if you like the Harry Potter world you will like this book. It’s an easy read and I finished it quickly. At first I really liked the enemy to lovers Mattheo was a big jerk but it didn’t last , he was supposed to be evil but he was gentle and in love to fast in the book , the plot was simple but i wish that we had real betrayal and maybe more magic but it’s a page turner it’s not amazing but it’s a good read still. Last think the way he calls her slut every time they doing it was a no for me

Firstly, thank you so much, Clara Delage, for the ARC of Sold to the Devil.
In a bargain to show their loyalty, Aelys' father agrees to a marriage for his daughter to wed the Dark Mage's eldest son Mattheo. Aware of what she must do, Aelys agrees, but as she is further integrated into the darkness, the expectations are more than she bargained for.
Sold to the Devil presented the narrative from the villains' perspective, which made everything all the more interesting as it focused on more morally grey zones. There was definitely more depth to the story, the world, and the characters. It is labelled as a Harry Potter fanfic. The influences were definitely noticeable, but I felt too much was recognisable for me to be removed from the original influences and be fully immersed in this novel. I definitely believe this book has so much potential it just needed a bit more description to enhance the world it creates.
This novel is definitely fast-paced and sets the ball rolling for a high-stake read. The tension was well built through the plot, and the social dynamics between the magical beings added a layer to the world that was fascinating to explore. However, I felt there were points that were rushed and could be explored more (I can'texpand on this without spoilers), and when it came to characters, I felt some of their actions were too instantaneous.
One was the relationship between Aelys and Mattheo. After the cruelty, Aelys forgiving him could have been prolonged, whereas after multiple warnings and hurtful encounters, it just took 24 hours. I think this is why I couldn't actually like Mattheo as a character even though he does end up being "sweet." The sudden change is just too instant for me to believe he had good intentions. I kept thinking he was playing a game with Aelys and taking advantage of her innocence. Aelys is also shrouded in secrets, and I really wish more had been explored of her background and the symbolism of her blood.

'For everyone who loves When the villains win and the heroes' flaws are revealed. This book is for you.'
Looking through the point of view, the villains waa so enjoyable, and I adored the idea of the cillains getting a happy ending. The dark aesthetic was brilliant and really set the tone. There were just a few things that needed tightening up, and I would definitely recommend reading the trigger warnings before delving into this one.
The world described in this book is a magical one, full of wizards, shapeshifters and fairies who fight in a war between dark and light magic (actually there is gray everywhere). The main characters and their friends try to live their life the best they can while also completing their tasks given by the Dark Master.
The book is easy to read, the events are intense and captivating but comforting in a way in the majority of the book, except for near the end where I almost cried at some moments. The end of the book seemed a bit rushed but I was actually glad for that because I am mostly interested in the romance part and this story focused on that.
I loved the development of the main characters, both separately and together, especially after they confessed their feelings for each other. They love and take care of each other, always put the other one in the first place and would do anything for their happiness.
Mattheo can look a little evil in the beginning but when you get to know him and especially after he realized his feelings for Aelys he is the sweetest, most affectionate boyfriend with a touch of darkness in the right moments. I loved the nicknames he gives her, especially "princess" which is my favorite. He is always there for her and does everything for her well-being, even if he is hurting too he puts her needs first.
I loved this book and I can't wait to read the next stories in this series!
I really liked this book. Being able to create something that is close to the original without it being the original is something that I admire. Names were changed and the academic setting was different, we also have fae and shapeshifters in this magical universe. The plot which was like so many before (marriage of convenience to gain power) did so in a way that wasn’t as predictable as I expected.
Our FMC Aelys is forced to marry the Darkvis’ eldest son Mattheo in a bid to expand his power. She attends the Scottish school of witchcraft and discovers a secret and a power she didn’t know she had before. She is a girl full of worry but is the embodiment of powering through.
Mattheo the Darkvis’ eldest sone has no choice but to wed Aelys, what starts as hatred for his situation, swiftly becomes something more romantic when jealousy takes hold.
Side characters you can learn to love and a plot that keeps you guessing. This was a good read.
This book is just a big yes for me. I love Harry Potter since I was little and this was just a different take on the story of it were reversed sides. So if Harry Potter was on the dark side. The book was amazing and I loved it so very much. Aelys and Mattheo are just so beautifully written. Something about them fills my soul with joy and happiness. Especially when they fell in love with each other. I was a bit shocked over how they handled things. They handled things with so many emotions and feelings. But they had some logic in there. The side characters also brought me so much joy and many feelings. Especially Tom. He’s very troublesome. I am very pleased with the book’s plot and direction it’s going in. Can’t wait for the second book!
This book swept me into dangerous magic system. A classic story of enemy to lovers with a hint of forbidden love. Set in a world where no one is safe and no one is what they appear to be. But the tension between the two characters is to die for. This is definitely a slow burn with some spice. This trigger warnings in this book should be taken seriously. If you are into the dark aspects of the book as I am, this book is highly recommend. I can't wait to get my hands on book two.
I gave this book a try because the blurb was so intriguing. I went into it with an open mind and wow... I read through it so fast, and when I was done, I was left empty, lol
Clara Delage did a fantastic job with the characters, the detail, the banter, the plot, and the spice. Such a beautiful debut, I can't say it enough ❤️
dnf about 25% in. everything about it was awkward, over the top, with both disgustingly controlling tendencies from the MMC, and the FMC was too weak to carry the plot or the alfa-male-brat MMC... too bad, because I actually had high hopes for this book, as i enjoy very similar books!
I loved this story. it felt familiar but stood on its own. the magic and factions we well written. im excited for book 2 ... thats when we are going to see these characters thrive!!!!!!!
This was an amazing book and I can’t wait for the second to come out! From an arranged marriage to forbidden love this book has it all! My emotions were all over the place while I was reading and I’m not even mad, I’m addicted!
As someone who is not a huge HP fan, I found it hard to get into this book until I hit Chapter five, then I couldn't put it down! Clara did an amazing job with her dark retelling, adding original ideas and a different voice. The author brings a vivid imagination to her story with a look into the darker side of magic and romance. I know book 2 will be just as amazing!
This is definitely a promising debut with heat, heart, and room to grow 🔥✨ Incredibly Dark Retelling of Harry Potter.
"Sold to the Devil" by Clara Delage is a strong and captivating start to what feels like a much bigger story. As a debut, it’s impressive – easy to read, engaging, and filled with emotional intensity.
The romance between Matteo and Aelys is a whirlwind of tragedy and passion. Matteo’s behavior at times felt a bit immature, and his shift from brooding bad boy to devoted husband happened a little too fast for me. I get it why, they’re young adults, and through their eyes, it makes sense about all this drama and all. But personally, I’ve never been a fan of the “mean bully turned lover” trope. Even though he changed, that lingering aftertaste stuck with me. Unfortunately, I cannot forget his bad treatment towards Aelys and I'm protective of that poor girlie! Roar!!! Bite bite, bad Matteo!!!
That said, I know a lot of my bookish girlies are obsessed with morally gray/black men and think the bad boys are hot, so heyyyyy, every reader’s take is valid! And I can’t deny it: Matteo and Aelys had serious chemistry. It was intense, magnetic, and undeniably steamy. So if you are into very bad boys, Matteo is for you! Personally (if i was Aelys haha) I would have chosen Tom or Arhur coz they were such cinnamon rolls <3 I LOVE THEM OKAY!!!??
So if you enjoy steamy scenes and intense emotional dynamics, this book definitely delivers.
While the plot isn’t fully fleshed out yet, it seems clear that this is just the beginning. The story hints at deeper character development and future arcs, which I’m excited to see unfold in the next books. There were a few twists that genuinely surprised me, it’s rare for someone who’s read as many books as I have!
Overall, this book sets the stage for a compelling series, and I’m looking forward to what Clara Delage brings next. Thank you for the ARC copy I’m leaving this honest review voluntarily and heeey cheer on a new author starting her journey! 💫
I had the occasion to proofread this book and let me tell you that this book is a whole ride! I got so many mixed emotions while correcting it: from being annoyed to being flustered.
Aelys is your typical innocent girl, who was trapped in her house by her father. Until, her father made a pact with the villain itself for marry her with his son, Mattheo. Mattheo got me on my nerves so much oh my god, he is a complete asshole at first and I almost ship her with his brother, Tom. I said in those “difficult” moments that he didn’t deserve her at all. But he got better.
This book was setting in a world full of wizards, exactly a Harry Potter retelling with powers and secrets. There were shapeshifters and fae and I loved the academia world where was setting. The characters were so good constructed and the trope “found family” was clearly there. I lived for their tension and the secrets and I was getting crazy with my live reactions.
Her writing style is mostly from dialogues between the characters, I had a snick peak from the mafia book which would be published as well and let me tell you the differences between writing styles for each book is crazy. I am so proud of Clara and she deserves the whole world.
Thank you to Clara Delage for providing me the opportunity to read an ARC of this book and provide an honest review.
This is a very dark Harry Potter re-telling, set in similar magical world, which made me VERY excited to read it! I took me a little while to get into the writing style of this one. The sentences started off feeling a bit stilted and non-descriptive from the 1st person POV. After a couple of chapters, I did get used to it though and some more details did start to flesh out in the writing.
Whilst many readers love the bully to lovers trope, this one left me with a little bit of whiplash and made the MMC's change of heart less believable. I wanted to love him in the end, but his actions and lack of remorse left me frustrated. I do hope he continues to redeem himself for the MMC, who I did end up loving. Her change from a push-over to 'two can play at that game' kind of attitude was so satisfying!
Overall, I am hopeful that the world building, details, story and character arcs will continue to flesh out and develop in the coming books, because the story holds incredible promise, set in a world that so many people would love to get lost in.
Read the trigger warning before delving into this one. Your mental health matters!
I hate that getting to this on my TBR took me so long. This has a Harry Potter feel, but on the dark side. I'm ready for book 2 -- it is such a great story! I am obsessed with Aelys & Mattheo. Mattheo starts as a jerk, even though Aelys is doing exactly what is expected from her. An arranged marriage is not what they expected. But Aelys father is a Darkvis disciple and has "given" his daughter to the devil's son Mattheo, to provide him with an heir. I love the family that she finds while attending school. Mattheo does not want her, but he does not want anyone else to touch her or pay her any attention. The sorting reveals a secret about Aelys's bloodline that she did not know. But this secret is one that her father and Darkvis (the devil) knew. This information is very helpful in fighting the war. A young witch and the devil's heir - what an interesting story. I highly recommend this story! I received an advance review copy at no cost and am leaving this review voluntarily. Story line ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Heat 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Spicy🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶💖 Fated Lovers 💓 Found Family 🌶️ Open Door 🛏️ One Bed
This book is inspired by Harry Potter. But this time you see the story from the dark side. And I love that. It’s such an unique and fun twist. In the beginning you get to know that Aelys and Mattheo are forced to get married. Over the course of the story you see how their relationship develops. Mattheo’s father is Darkvis. The dark wizard. And he tries to take over the magical world.
I really enjoyed this book. It keeps you want to read more. I loved all the dynamics about people and seeing what was gonna happen. And that everyone went more dark over the course of the book. Im very excited to read the rest of the series. En curious about what Clara’s gonna do next.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ -Enemies to lovers -Arranged marriage -Magic & shifters -Academy setting
I received an advance copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
I read this so quickly!! I love an enemies to lovers story ESPECIALLY when it's an arranged marriage storyline! I could definitely see where this story originated as a HP fanfic, but I personally love that. This book can be read as a standalone novel, however book 2 is supposed to come out in 2026.
Disclaimer: I was gifted this ARC to honestly review
From start to finish I could not put this down Sold to the son of the dark warlock and attending magic school for the first time Aelys is a “good girl” who does what she is told. Will she stop? Will sparks actually fly between the forced couple?
the tension between Aelys and Mattheo, the way their forced marriage unfolds in the middle of a dark magical war creates a powerful emotional and narrative pull.
I especially like how the story blends dark fantasy elements with romance and hidden secrets. The idea that Aelys carries knowledge that could influence the outcome of the war adds a strong layer of mystery that keeps readers invested.
This is a Harry Potter retelling as a dark romantasy. Here we get the story of Aelys and Mattheo, who are arranged to be married.
The world building is fun here - a magical world with creatures, mages, and political alliances. The story is compelling and I can't wait to see what happens in book 2!
How would I describe this book?? One word.. AMAZING! I love HP and I love a HP retelling. This magical world is great and the way the story was written? Even better! I'm an absolute fangirly 🤗
