How to Make a Killing

Rate this book
Meet the women of Harrington Estates. They're one big happy family. At least, that's what they all say...

New arrival Bella is determined to get to the top, and she doesn't mind stepping on some Louboutin-clad toes to get there.

No-nonsense Hannah was the rising star, but now Bella's stealing her thunder - and her agent of the year award.

Olivia wants it all - the glittering career, the picture-perfect family. But lately it feels like something - or someone - is trying to snatch it away.

Then there's poor Claire, who has lost more keys than sold properties - and Bella makes sure the whole office knows it.

When Bella is found dead at the open house for a £10-million mansion, everyone's a suspect. They'd all die for that listing, after all.

But did one of them kill for it?

Fans of How to Kill Your Family and Selling Sunset will love this hilariously dark thriller from Kate Weston, with characters you'll love to hate, vicious office politics, and a twist you'll NEVER see coming.

I really enjoyed this book and the story. It’s an interesting mystery with plenty of thrills and gruesome deaths, especially towards the end. The final scenes where the murderer is exposed are quite tense and, yet again in a murder mystery, I failed to guess who the murderer was! I’m not very good at it, though I do enjoy the stories. It’s one of my favourite genres.

In terms of characters, the only character I really liked was Olivia, and I spent the book hoping she wasn’t the murderer! Hannah, I went through phases with, and I could understand the way she was coming across because of her circumstances. Claire, I didn’t like as she just came across as clingy, unable to take a hint, and not very hard-working – she seemed to expect things to just fall into her lap. Amanda was interesting but was juggling too much and putting too much pressure on herself and those around her, she seemed overbearing. Bella and Brick seemed almost like they were made for each other, far more alike than either of them realised. Tom I couldn’t really get a handle on, but he just seemed to be a character used to move the story on rather than truly being a part of it.

The private lives of the characters came to impact on their working lives at the estate agents, and it was interesting to try and figure out who knew what and when, and how that could impact on the murder. I did think that the story was slow to start, I think a lot more set-up than was needed at the beginning after such an exciting prologue! But the second half, or second two-thirds was much better paced, I felt.

It was the characters and their relationships with each other that drew me in, as they began to suspect, and then turn on, each other as the story unfolded. It was a great engaging read and one that I’m glad I chose from a short blurb alone from my book advent calendar!

A good read! It took a few chapters to get into it fully, however once the plot started to unfold it was hard to put it down!
