Raising Daughters: A Christian Mom's Guide for the Lifelong Journey

Rate this book
A companion for the mother-daughter lifelong journey. Raising daughters is a divine gift. It’s wonderful and, at times, excruciatingly painful. As a mother of seven daughters, September McCarthy has had, well, seven opportunities to get the mother-daughter dance down. She’s made mistakes. Many mistakes. Yet by God’s great grace, she’s also gleaned an inestimable trove of godly wisdom.Raising Daughters is a loving companion book for the daily journey of mothering young women. Written with warmth and honesty, September begins by exploring God’s delight in you—as a woman and a mother—and continues with topics on purpose, fears, generational lies, grit, grace, conflict, and the beauty of womanhood. This book is for moms who, like September, have tripped over their words and recognize their wisdom isn’t enough. It’s for the mother who feels afraid to talk to her daughters about difficult and uncomfortable subjects. And for the mom confused and fatigued by the emotional rollercoaster of girls, wondering how she can persevere for the years to come. It’s for mothers raising young daughters to love Jesus and their family and for moms releasing daughters into the world. Each chapter includes relatable teaching from the author’s experiences, Scripture, application questions, action steps, and a reflective prayer. Join September in learning the steps of love and faithfulness for Raising Daughters.Mothers and daughters are like two dance partners who never took dance lessons, and our whole lives are spent trying to keep in step. Just when we think we have the tempo, the balance, have learned to read one another’s moves and have learned the moves, then everything changes. We grow, change, and learn—together, or apart.

5 stars. Easy.

It felt like I was sitting across from a gracious older friend who cheered me on, gently admonished me with love, and practically prepared me for what’s ahead.

I was so grateful for her wisdom from raising 10 children, including 6 daughters. This wasn’t a book of dos and don’ts. It was heartfelt insight from her walk with God.

So many practical tips tested through lived experience. I found myself closing the book after each chapter, ready to implement what I had just learned.

The end of each chapter created space to pause, reflect, and actually put things into practice.

I loved how she reminded us that our identity is in Christ first. That truth alone brings so much courage into motherhood.

It also didn’t push a modern narrative (which I see in so many books like this) or a single “right” path. Instead, she made room for every season a daughter may walk through, while encouraging us to prepare them well.

I teared up throughout. It gave me so much clarity and encouragement for raising daughters today.

Such a blessing. I’m so grateful I got to read it 🤍

"The Holy Spirit was giving me ample opportunity to show up, grow up, and to live up to the standards I wanted my daughters to have when they were one day, fully grown women."

This book goes beyond being a "self help" book to becoming a better mother. It is like being invited over to have tea and a long chat with an old friend, where she lovingly gives you advice on things that she herself has been through while raising her daughters.

This is a wonderful Christian mom's guide to becoming equipped to prepare our daughters for the real world - while also preparing us to accept how our motherhood roles will change once our girls go into the real world.

With solid advice, relatable stories, wisdom, and scripture shared along the way, I recommend this book for any mother who has daughters, no matter their ages!

I would love for the author to write a book about raising sons now.

Sweet, gospel centered book on mothering daughters. Loved the focus on keeping our eyes on Christ as moms no matter what.

It felt a little lacking cohesion in the chapters though. All of it was just really good encouragement or semi-random thoughts on mothering daughters. It did not really feel related under each chapters heading. Maybe that was just me though… 😅

This book has been blowing up on social media so I was curious about the hype. It was sweet mediations, but just not what I thought fully.

4.5 Stars for this is a wonderful and practical book by September McCarthy who has raised her 7 daughters over the past 30 years. This book was a very quick read, and filled with a lot of practical advice for raising daughters. Reading this book felt more like a heart to heart conversation with September on this topic. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a daughter and is looking for some wisdom as they raise her!*

As excited as I was to read a book on raising daughters, the book for some reason falls flat on my expectations. I was looking forward to some practical advice and a fresh Christian perspective coming from an experienced mumma. Don’t mean to be harsh and never the one to write negative reviews. But I couldn’t read this book beyond two chapters. There is just too much emphasis on self reliance. I appreciate the efforts of the author in sharing her story but sadly this book is not for me.

Motherhood and education are not about us, but about pointing our daughters’ hearts to Christ. This book walks with mothers through every stage, showing how connection is built early and sustained over the years through love, humility, and prayer. It is an invitation to live motherhood with our eyes fixed on God, remembering that our example deeply shapes the next generation.

This book started a bit slow and repetitive for me, but by the end I came to believe that most Christian Moms should add this book to their library as a grace-filled reminder of how to parent girls. I appreciated the later chapters about launching them into adulthood because so many parenting books only deal with the little years.

Every mom with a daughter (no matter what age) should read this book! I borrowed a copy from the library, but I will be purchasing my own for reference through the years. These pages are overflowing with sound advice and biblical wisdom that left me feeling both challenged and encouraged.
