Under My Skin

Rate this book
Under usual circumstances, Lucy Blake would happily fly home to visit her family. But when her brother unknowingly breaks the news of their parents’ abrupt divorce, she’s determined to learn why they called it quits and didn’t bother telling her.

After the loss of his dad, Everett Meyers dedicated everything to his tattoo studio. He sacrificed his time, money, and even his relationships for the sake of keeping busy, but the stress of running the shop still isn’t enough to keep his grief at bay.

When his best friend’s younger sister comes into town seeking a spontaneous tattoo, he knows something isn’t right. It may have been a few years since he’s seen her, but Lucy doesn’t even like tattoos.

He’s emotionally unavailable. She’s feeling reckless. The combination might be a bad idea, but what was once casual familiarity shifts to inescapable interest. Will the result be catastrophic, or will they find themselves leaning on one another when they least expect?

Under My Skin is a heartfelt brother’s best friend romance full of swoony moments to take you on a journey of hope and healing.

3.5 ⭐ rounded up because this was the right book at the right time.

Cute, unproblematic, sweet.
Well written, with well rounded characters.
It's a nice romance story circled by a lot of family and friendship affection 🩷

I suggest you read it in a cozy moment, on a sofa with an herbal tea or maybe in bed with an ice cream... you do you. This will leave you with a smile on your face.

I hope I get to read more of the author's books. I already eyed the one set on Christmas 🫶🏼

I liked the cover, I read of a tattoo artist MMC while reading of another tattoo artist MMC (hello Rafe Cohen, I miss you already) and I just thought... Why not?!

I now noticed the time is tight for this so I'm reading straight away!

4.5/5✨
3/5🌶️

So grateful to be part of Heather Garvin's street team 🥰 because that made possible for me to receive this e-ARC. Thank youu!

Lucy got some really bad news about her parents from her brother, Simon. But they haven't told one single thing to Lucy about their divorce. That's why Lucy got into the first plane and went to her hometown in Cooper Ridge, to find some answers from her parents.

Everett was Simon's best friend and owner of a tattoo shop in Cooper Ridge. When Lucy came into town, Everett felt really attracted to mature Lucy, not seeing her as Simone's little sister anymore. But what could he do to not break his best friend's trust when what he felt for his sister was so strong?

I haven't expected for this story to have that angst, but it was something which I loved. I'm a huge lover of forbidden love and I adored to see the tension between Lucy and Everett and how they were trying to remain at the only friends status. But it was obvious that there was more between them and when all the other things from their hearts were too much to handle, they both found solace in each other's arms. And that was the sweetest thing ever, to see how each touch affected them, how they wanted to be closer to each other despite knowing that it wasn't fair to Simon.

This was such a cosy and yet full of emotions story, where simple things, like being listened and comforted by someone, can have such a great impact on mental health and a fragile heart.

I’m beyond grateful to be a part of Heather Garvin’s arc team because I love her writing so very much.

Under My Skin hits its mark. The characters have depth, and you feel their grief, confusion, tension and joy right alongside them. The setting? I want to live in Copper Ridge during fall and never leave. I loved the dynamics between the characters - from siblings to parent/child to best friends - they all were written beautifully.

Thank you Heather, and team, for the opportunity to read an advanced copy!

(thankyou to the author for the ARC. this is 100% my honest review.)

I can safely say Heather Garvin is an author I'm going to want to read more from because this was almost PERFECTION.

A tattoo artist bike-rider MMC who blushes after a kiss and says things like this:

'“Can I see?”
No. “Sure.” Shit.
Why can’t I say no to her? I mean, I guess I know why. It’s the look on her face at this very moment. It’s the way her smile brightens the entire room. I like seeing her happy. Scratch that, I like being the one who makes her happy. I want to be the reason for it, even if it’s something small.'

INSTANT SWOON.

'Our fingertips brush, and it’s so brief. She probably didn’t even notice, but it scares me how badly I wish it would have lasted just a little longer.'

GIGGLING AND KICKING MY FEET.

A graphic designer FMC who's scared to death of bikes but somehow feels safe with JUST him and says things like:

'A hint of a smile pulls at his lips, and I do my best to ignore the flip my stomach does at the sight. Since when does a smile from Everett make my stomach flip? Since when does a smile from anyone have that effect on me? Strangers far enough away on the street, sure. Celebrities in magazines, yeah sometimes. But someone this close? Who I actually know? I’m close enough to see Everett’s flaws, but right now, I can’t find them.'

AND MY PERSONAL FAVORITE SCENE: THE "I REGRET NOTHING" SCENE.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

I adored this. It’s a shorter read at 270 pages but I felt very connected to the characters. I think it’s in part of the book only taking place over a week and a half or so. Because of that you get to see a good bit of each of those days - it’s very slice of life feeling. This book isn’t insta love though. It’s more so the beginning of their relationship that sets a really strong foundation for their future. I definitely could have read more about these characters but I’m satisfied with where things wrap up here. I have no question they’ll stay together (and that’s supported by the epilogues and bonus chapter).

All I’m saying is I wouldn’t turn down a tattoo artist who has plenty of tattoos of his own and also rides a motorcycle. I’d snatch him up quick just like the fmc does!

Everyone knows that my biggest issue with brother’s best friend romance is this: why is your brother so concerned about his adult sister dating his adult best friend if his best friend is a supposedly good guy??

THAT being said, this book didn’t harp on that too much which I really enjoyed. This was two people who were concerned their relationship might upset the friendship that had been going on for basically two decades—understandable! The angst and yearning in this one was sooooo much more than I expected. I love that these two felt like home with each other, and found ways to take life’s upsets and get through them together.

•small-town setting
•golden girl x bad boy
•ahem, heavily tatted man on a motorcycle
•grief, family trauma

Lucy is basically me. Graphic designer. Follower of rules. Never liked getting into trouble. Was never rebellious as a kid. Considerate, even when drunk. Loved John Green growing up.

Everett is almost the complete opposite. He has a tattoo shop (therefore also lots of tattoos). He drives a motorbike. But they’re both very passionate, empathetic and considerate people.

“For me, he’s felt like a pillar these past twenty-four hours. Something solid I can lean on. There’s something about being around him that feels calming—easy.”

I loved how this book is a mixture of fun, love and something deeper. Without it being to much. It’s done in such a caring way.

“You’re still grieving something. It might not be the same, but the future you envisioned with your parents looks different than how you thought it would.”

“He always said the most valuable asset in the house was us.”

“It’s like you both want to help lighten the load for each other, but your arms are already full.”

When it comes to feel-good books, Heather Garvin is always a guarantee!
If you're looking for a cozy, sweet, emotional, and steamy romance, Under My Skin is the right book for you.
I just love the way Heather writes real and relatable characters. Lucy and Everett (the MCs of this book) are no exception. Both of them are just living their regular, beautiful, and yet complicated lives made of happy and sad moments. Both of them are dealing with loss and grief, and, once they meet, they find something that makes them feel alive and burning with passion.
Under My Skin is a very well done brother's best friend romance. I loved watching Everett trying to resist his feelings for Lucy only to discover she wanted nothing more than to be his for the taking. I like that he thinks he has to be respectful of Lucy's brother because of their friendship that feels more like brotherhood, but Lucy never fails to remind him that she is more than just someone's sister, and that she is a person of her own who clearly knows what she wants. I really LOVE the way Lucy take charge of the situation and make Everett understand that they both deserve to get what they want, which is to be together.

ARC Review

It tells the story of Lucy, a girl who finds out her parents are getting divorced through her brother, since her parents refuse to tell her themselves. That’s when she shows up in her parents’ hometown and impulsively decides to get a tattoo—only the owner of the studio knows her well. Everett, Lucy’s brother’s best friend, refuses to tattoo her. That night, they realize they’re both staying at her brother’s house.

I liked Lucy, she seems cute and funny. That said, I feel like I don't know a lot about her, and I would have liked to get to know her more.

I really liked Everett. He has a big internal conflict, is still affected by things from his past, and shows great character growth.

The story is good,it’s romantic, funny, and spicy.

What didn’t quite work for me was the timeline. Lucy goes for just a weekend, and on the first day she’s already catching feelings for Everett. For me it was too insta-love.

Overall, it’s a light, fun-to-read romcom.

This was just so perfect!!
No miscommunication whatsoever, adult character that actually act and talk their age, things being resolved in a realistic way!!
I mean, what else do you need?
Of course the smmutty scenes were goood and the romance felt a bit rushed at times but then again they’re childhood friends(ish) so it kinda fits!
The whole parent’s twist was 100% not expected and I loved that scene so much!
Just… ugh, heather!!! I love you!

This was adorable! A short and sweet read for sure!

We have Lucy, a graphic designer running her own business who travels home for the weekend when her brother drops the “mom and dad are getting divorced” card. She’s confused and angry that they didn’t tell her anything and wants the chance to confront them. I totally felt for her. One minute you think your life is one way and the next it turns itself on its head. You start to view your happy childhood memories with a different lens and wonder if there’s any wings that you might’ve missed. While the divorce is obviously a big family change, Lucy grows more upset about the fact that no one bothered to tell her for a long time. She deserved to know what was going on and I’m glad she got the closure she needed, although it wasn’t what I was expecting.

During her visit, she stays with her brother at his apartment and who else is staying there for the time being? Only her brother’s best friend Everett of course. I love a classic brother’s best friend trope and this really scratched that itch. Everett owns and operates his own tattoo studio and in the process of renovating the apartment above, so he lives with his best friend Simon for the time being. While grappling with his father’s passing the year before, Everett’s life has been sort of stunted. He feels immense guilt about not being there for his mom during their grieving and can’t seem to make any new lasting connections with others. When Lucy comes to town though, she’s no longer the little sister he knew in the past but a beautiful and brilliant young woman.

This story was fun and a nice lighter read to wrap up the summer.

Personally, I think that it was just a bit too short. I felt like I didn’t have enough time to fully connect with the characters. It also leaned a bit more into the “insta-love” side of romance novels since the whole thing takes place over a weekend, which isn’t a bad thing necessarily. I know lots of people really enjoy an “insta-love” story, but that’s not really for me. I think I would’ve enjoyed this more had it been a week long trip instead of a weekend. I feel like that would’ve given a bit more time to not only connect with the characters, but see how the characters connect with each other. The romance, while sweet and fun, didn’t come across as something I’d root for long term.

Overall I enjoyed it! It was fun and could definitely be an easy palate cleanser type of read between heavier books! If you’re looking for something light and easy and are a fan of insta-love then this is the book for you!

Thank you so much to Netgalley and Victory Editing for the ARC!

I don't know what kind of magic Heather put in this book, but my goodness was I fully immersed from the very beginning. There's something about her writing that feels so effortless and engaging that really made me love this book.

The main characters, Lucy and Everett, are so likable and relatable. I found myself very drawn to Everett since we both have gone through similar things in regards to losing a parent, the grief he experienced, and the way he coped with such a hard transition in his life. Not to mention, he's a fully tatted and talented artist who is incredibly sweet, thoughtful, and such a gentleman! New book boyfriend UNLOCKED.

While Under My Skin deals with heavier topics such as grief, loss of a parent, and divorce, there is a happy balance of lighthearted banter that had me laughing out loud and the most perfect tension between the main characters.

I can't wait to see what the author writes next!

I absolutely adored this book!

Under my skin is brother's best friend done perfect!

After receiving some news from her brother on her parents relationship status, Lucy leaves Colorado to head back to her small town that she outgrew when she left for college.

Everett who loves his hometown is finishing building his life, home and business there when the loss of his father in the last year derails him a bit.

Lucy and Everett have been around each other their whole lives but haven't really "known" each other. But when they put together and spend more time talking they start to form a connection both physically (they can't keep their eyes off the other) and emotionally. Lucy shows Everett it's ok to grieve, while Everett shows Lucy that Copper Ridge may have more to offer than going back to CO.

You are drawn in and routing for these two throughout the story. The pinning and finally giving in. Gavin always gives a great story.

This was so well done of the tale of finding the person who might have been there all along but you find each other again at the right time.

4 ⭐️ i really enjoyed this book. super sweet & cute. I loved Everett & Lucy as individuals but also loved them as they were coming together. Both bring each other so much peace during some hardships. I loved the pace of the story had me hooked & entertained throughout. Everett is such a sweetheart and i wanted to just cuddle him up. Lucy was amazing, i loved how she took charge of situations and wasn’t giving up without a reason. I loved how Lucy helped Everett understand that he does deserve happiness & love and they both deserve to be with each other. I liked how considerate Everett was when it came to Lucy’s brother and understanding that his friendship means the world to him and didn’t want to mess it up, but i also loved how Lucy kept reminding him i’m more than just someone’s sister. it did feel a little insta lovey for me but that’s just my opinion, and either way the characters are so lovable that i completely got over it. Like come on, a tattoo artist biker!!!! IM SAT 💙🫶🏻 also fave scene “i regret nothing” 🤭☺️ iykyk

4 stars!!🌟
This was such a great brother’s best friend romance story that heavily incorporated grief, love in all forms, and change. It was so easy to love Lucy and Everett both together and as individuals. I was deeply invested in seeing their growth and how they each dealt with their individual struggles. I really loved the way Everett’s grief was depicted. It felt very real and raw to me, and I appreciated that. I also really enjoyed the depiction of Lucy’s struggles with her parents divorce and the way it unfolded. I did find that some of the issues the characters faced seemed to be resolved a little too smoothly in my opinion, but that didn’t really deter me from enjoying the story at all. Overall this book was cozy and warm, and an excellent addition to a fall TBR!!🍁
A sincere thank you to NetGalley, Heather Garvin, and her team for an early copy of this book in exchange for my honest thoughts and opinions.

Under My Skin by Heather Garvin was ADORABLE. I couldn't stop smiling the entire time!! It pulled me in from the beginning and I seriously didn't want to do anyyyyything else but keep reading this! It's one of those small town cozy romances that make your heart feel all warm and fluttery!

This story follows Lucy who returns home to deal with some family issues and from there it's just chaos and sweetness!!! I loved every single character and the way all the relationships felt so real! Everyone had their own little quirks and now I want to go live in Copper Ridge with them!!!

Obviously it's not a super deep life changing book (even though there is a really nice little message/lesson thrown in there) and that's not what it's trying to be but that's why I loved it! It's cute, fast, funny and all around a feel good read in all of the best ways! I'm officially a Heather Garvin fan now and I NEED more Copper Ridge books asap, please! I'm not ready to leave this little world yet!!!

ARC Review:
A quietly magnetic romance that blends small-town nostalgia with emotional grit, Under My Skin follows a graphic designer who left for college and never really looked back—until family circumstances pull her home. What she doesn’t expect is the instant spark with her brother’s best friend: tattooed, a biker, and far more emotionally layered than first impressions suggest. Both are carrying grief in different forms, and their connection becomes a space for healing, growth, and unexpected tenderness. Adorable, aching, and full of heart.

An adorable, cozy read that’s easy to fall into and hard to put down.

The bond between is so adorable and truly makes sense. It’s such a lovely read and I always find Heather’a writing and stories to be wonderful.

If you’re a lover of the bad boy vibe, brother’s best friend, tattoos, close proximity and sooo much more- this is the read for you! You won’t be disappointed! 😊

Lucy finds out—through her brother, no less—that her parents have divorced and never bothered to tell her. She’s hurt, confused, and just trying to make sense of it all.
Enter Everett—her brother’s best friend, the guy who runs a tattoo shop and carries his grief like a second skin. He’s the strong-but-broken type, the one who keeps busy so he doesn’t have to slow down and actually feel. Lucy and Everett might have known each other for a long time, yet this time something is different.
The plot and the storyline might be a little bit on the simple and liniar side, yet sometimes a cozy, cute and easy to read romance is exactly what you need.

✨ARC Review 📚✨

Maybe I’m just a sucker for a tattooed MMC lol but I absolutely loved this book. Idk what it is about Heather’s books but they are such quick reads and you just wanna keep reading. This book has a little of everything, from brothers best friend to more heavy topics like dealing with grief. Everett and Lucy’s story is filled with so much emotion and it’s like you feel it right along with them. Now I wish I could read this all over again for the first time, I also wish we could get more of Lucy and Everett!

I want to thank author Heather Garvin for the amazing opportunity to get an ARC of this book!

Lucy heads home after finding out her parents are getting a divorce. While there, she feels like her whole life starts to fall apart. The only thing keeping her together is something very unexpected: a new friendship, and possibly more, with her brother's best friend Everett.

This was such a good one! Here's what I loved:

Lucy: She was such a good character. I loved how she was so torn with what she imagined her life to be and what she really wants to do with her life. This all comes to a head when she goes home. She loves the town but also doesn't know if she could come back to it.

Everett: Adored him! He's a hot tattoo artist with a heart of gold. He's such a great character. There is a lot he's going through and I really loved how he finds peace with Lucy. She starts to ground him.

The side characters: I adored them all. From Lucy's best friend to both of their parents. And of course, her brother. They are all really well drawn out and give a lot to the story.

All in all, this was a great and spicy romance!

Thank you to Heather for the gifted copy!

Heather is one of my auto buy authors and can do no wrong in my opinion 🫣

Everett and Lucy (re)met while they were both going through some life changes. Everett learning to deal with his grief and Lucy’s family dynamics changing. This book was simple and sweet and felt REAL. The challenges they faced were handled so beautifully and didn’t seem over dramatic. Everett & Lucy fit together so well and I loved watching them grow as people AND together.

THE FOUR REFERENCE 🤌🏼🤌🏼 Everett can get it, I love him so much. The way he’s a softy but also a hard ass tattooed biker man???? Sign me tf up.

Also loved the cat 🤍

Oooooommmmmmmggggggggg Heather writes the most palate cleansing cutesie romances ever and I adore them. I loooooved the tension and slow burn and I adored the MMC. He’s easily the type of man I’d want in my own life. And the sweet twist at the end with the parents was so unexpected and cute and ugh I just loved it. Lucy surprised me in her boldness, I kinda wish the burn was a smidge slower and there was more tension but overall loved

Yes, yes, YES! These two are absolutely adorable. I need an interconnected series for all the artists. Their stories would be so different. Chaotically in sync..
We follow Everett, a tattoo artist, and Lucy, a graphic designer. They were meant to be. Both characters are extremely artistically talented and have a childhood history. They both have their challenges and it isn't always the easiest topics. But they had plenty of growth throughout the book!
