Hi, I'm the author, so I've read this story many times. And I am equal parts excited and nervous to get it into your hands. This tale was born from daily walks with my newborn and a desire to reclaim many months lost of creativity. Needless to say, the Lord filled my cup to overflowing, seeing as this was the fastest I've ever written anything in my life.

But fast does not always equal good, and I'm forever grateful to the many eyes on this manuscript who have only made it better and encouraged me along the way.

I can't wait for you guys to meet Merri, Olivander, and Jac. I hope and pray their story reminds you that you are not forgotten. That you have purpose. And that the Lord's plans are always better than our own.

The cover is absolutely GORGEOUS. I LOVE IT. I also love how Olivander low-key looks like Flynn Rider. The clothes, the hair. Just compare the two and you’ll see what I mean. I don’t picture Olivander to look like Flynn Rider tho, he just looks like him on the cover.

It’s quite ironic that, as a human, Merri can’t swim.

Can we just pause for a moment and appreciate Esias? I just love fictional and/or fantastical portrayals of God. A round of applause for Alissa’s success 👏👏👏.

Chapter 22 being called It’s Not A Date is hilarious.

The portal is very clever. You have to be swallowed by a fancy whale? Talk about terrifying. But very cool.

I love Nain. She’s great. I want to try her baking.

I knew Reve wasn’t to be trusted. I was suspicious of him from the beginning.

Wow! That was such an interesting read, and I'm warring with myself because on the one side, I really liked it... and on the other, my brain is struggling with the portal fantasy aspect.😂 Why must I war with myself so?

Characters:
Oli was such a lovable character! I just wanted to squeeze him up and save him from everything going on around him!
Merri...I liked her, not as much as Oli...but I did like her as a character.
Jac! Ack! I love Jac...and he's just so patient and kind!
Orsin crackled me up! I liked him!
Nain was the sweetest and I wanted to adopt her as my grandma...lol...

Themes:
That nothing surprises God and He can use even our biggest mistakes for His glory.

Romance:
Yes, some semi detailed kisses...3 I think? If I'm remembering right, all very well done.

Violence/Gore:
There are some fights, near drownings, deaths mentioned, a fight with a sea monster, mentions of someone being dismembered and a trail as well as water turning red...that made me a touch queasy but I touch off a might easy.

Magic:
There is Winderplume which is a type of dust given to the people of Chaera by Esais (or God)...and then there is a Sea Witch who uses the Winderplume for evil purposes. Such as curses.

Overall:
This is a fantasy/Little Mermaid retelling and I enjoyed the time in Tenby (honestly, strangely enough might have enjoyed that more than the time in Chaera.😂)! The way they traveled from one realm to another was soooo cool! loved that! I loved a lot of aspects, the ending felt a bit too convenient...but also not complaining because I like one aspect of it while disliking another and uh...I'm so torn y'all.😂

This book got off to a pretty slow start for me. I didn’t really feel invested until around the hundred page mark. My absolute favorite part of this book was the Wales setting. That section of the book that takes place there just feels like the ultimate gloomy, yet cozy, small town experience with a lighthouse at the edge of a cliff and you can almost feel the sea air in every word. I wish I could live in the town so badly!!! Surprisingly, I actually enjoyed the real world setting more than the fantasy world, which is unusual for me. I really enjoyed the twist on the portal fantasy as well!! The romance was so wholesome and sweet!!! I didn't love some aspects of the ending, which lowered my rating but everything wrapped up nicely.

Characters
Olivander: I always enjoyed regencies and royal characters, and so I did really like Prince Oli
Merri: I grew to like Merri, but she wasn’t my favorite. I struggled to get over some of the changing from mermaid into a human elements. Particularly, the fact that she couldn’t swim as a human. I was just unable to suspend my belief with that one — I would be willing to suppose that the transformation between sea maiden and human was more involved than just switching a tail to legs, but given the fact that there is a swimming kick that is pretty identical to what you would do if you had a tail, I had a hard time believing she couldn’t swim. But overall, I really grew to like her and I thought it was impressive how well we knew her given the fact that she couldn’t talk for pretty much the entire book!!!
Jac: He was easily my favorite character!! As soon as I reached his chapters for the first time I immediately grew so much more intrigued by the story. He was just such a great character so patient and kind!
Nain: She was so sweet and such an awesome grandma character!!

Overall, I’m glad I read the book and I would recommend if it sounds intriguing to you, but it just personally wasn’t for me!! I do think a lot of other people would enjoy this though. I am looking forward to continuing the series when the next book comes out!!

Where to start?

This book holds so much whimsy, sweetness, and heart. The characters are endearing and you can’t help but love them and root for them. The amount of times I squealed or grinned when Jac and Merri had interactions…ahh I love them ❤️

Also, the world (both worlds)…just…yes. I’m pretty sure I want to live in a lighthouse in Tenby, Wales now. Though living in the magical world of Chaera also sounds amazing. The magic system and everything was so unique and beautiful!

Then of course there’s the themes of forgiveness, rejection, and just wanting to be loved…AH MY HEART. So beautifully done.

This book feels like a breath of fresh, salty, sea air, and I cannot wait to revisit these characters time and time again. (And I can’t wait to meet new characters in the other books in this series!!)

This book was everything I expected and more! From the lyrical writing and enchanting setting, to the sweet characters and intriguing premise. As soon as I saw this stunning cover I knew that the story that lay within would be just as beautiful....and I was right!!!!
My heart went out to Merri from the very beginning, but I loved how the Alissa didn't shy away from the fact that out actions have consequences and that God does not always heal our wounds, but sometimes chooses to leave them as a reminder to follow Him.
I also loved Olivander's storyline and how everything came together at the end. I gasped when I realized how the connections were working! Portal fantasy is something that I find so fun and whimsy and this book has whimsy in spades.
While the characters definately go through a lot in this story and I wanted to know how it would end, I loved it so much that I read it slowly, savoring each chapter so that I wouldn't have to put it down. I know that this is a book that I'll come back to many times when I'm craving a fantasy full of sweet characters, hints of Narnia, and rich with Biblical themes of forgiveness, healing, and trusting the Lord's plan.

Add in the vivid worldbuilding and all the little details that made the setting come alive, I was hooked from start to finish!

This book will have you experiencing all the emotions—you’ll gasp in shock and get teary eye and kick your feet while squealing in delight. The sweet romance of friends to more was *chef’s kiss* The portal fantasy twist was so fun, and I now want to adopt a whale and eat homemade baps in Wales…I can probably achieve at least one of those dreams in my lifetime 😆

If you enjoy retellings, The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen, and sweet 90s/00s romantic comedies/dramadies like Serendipity or When Harry Met Sally, I HIGHLY recommend reading On The Edge of the Forgotten Sea! The way Alissa blended fantasy with contemporary is PHENOMENAL and I need you to read it so you understand what I mean because I don’t know how to say anything more without spoilers 🤣

I enjoyed the blend of the fantastical land of Chaera, with its seaside citadels and everyday magic and prophecies, with real-world Wales and its lighthouses, small-town atmosphere, and dear, sweet Nain and her delightful baps. It explores deep spiritual themes without being heavy handed and tells a story of being lost and found again, broken by mistakes and redeemed by forgiveness. If you’re enchanted by the ocean and looking for something sweet and charming with a dash of classic evil sea witch meddling, this one’s for you!

Alissa always does such a fantastic job of interweaving Light and Truth into her novels, which is such a breath of fresh air for me. Although very suitable for younger readers, I like that—as an adult reading this story—there is depth even further beyond the fiction; and I can always picture the Creator when I read books like this one. I am whisked away into another world when I open Alissa’s books, and this book is no exception. In a land where magic, mermaids, and many worlds exist, On the Edge of the Forgotten Sea is a tale of dreams lost and found, of hearts broken and mended, and of the sureness of God’s plan.

Wow, the creative story telling and intricate way different themes from past stories are woven into this book! This was such a delightful adventure I feel I’ve just been taken on! There were some twists and turns I didn’t see coming. I also loved the magic system and the world created which had some strong biblical themes throughout. This is a story filled with beacons of hope, of forgiveness, of courage and a love so deep it transcends time and portals to other worlds. With a cast of characters that will quickly wind their way into readers' imaginations and hearts, readers will find each escapade they engage in thrilling, as they move from one world to the next.

There is a strong faith thread woven throughout, with truths that transcend time or place. It is a story of redemption and forgiveness, but also one that still has consequences for the choices made. Part fairytale with a dash of fantasy, there is just enough magic to bring the warm cozy feeling I had when I first discovered fairytales as a child.

I didn’t really know what to expect going into this book. I didn’t doubt that I would like it (otherwise I wouldn’t have applied to be an ARC reader), but I also didn’t think that I would like it as much as I do. Retellings are very hit or miss for me, and while someone could say that it’s a Little Mermaid retelling, it’s so much more than that.

The plotline was unique and regularly had me wondering what was going to happen next–even the ending. I’m excited to see how the series will continue to play out. And the characters. There were several lines that made me laugh out loud, and others that made me go “aww!”. Olivander was such a refreshing MMC. He was kind and gentle, but still fierce, and fought for those he loves. He pursued Merri in such a kind and healthy way. Both Merri and Olivander’s character development felt relatable (as in I understood why they did what they did) and progressed naturally.

I am so grateful to have received this book as an eARC. Yes, I was terribly sloooooowwwww to finish!) On the Edge of the Forgotten Sea was a charming read, complete with an immersive (not confusing!) world, and endearing characters. It had all the gentle impact of middle grade classics, and touched deep topics of making choices, forgiveness, redemption, and trust without straying to more mature content. I would recommend this for ages 11 and up. One day I definitely plan to introduce my children to this one!

The best part was that every glory was given to God (Esias) in this story, making every lesson learned even more valuable in truth.

I found myself emersed in this fairytale, it reminded me of a cross between sleeping beauty and the little mermaid but not the Disney versions! This story has substance this story has heart. It is enchanted with Grace, forgiveness, wonder and hope. I was privileged to be able to receive an second I am so thankful I loved it and want to read it to my kids!

I really enjoyed the first half to 60% of this, but the last 40% I just didn't mesh as well with. It was fine, it just wasn't something that really struck me personally.

Although the romance was definitely clean, there was too much of it for me, and the book could have used a light line edit. I also felt the resolution was too derivative and there was too much of a reliance on tropes.

Overall, if you are a die-hard romantasy fan, this is going to be for you.

I was hooked from the beginning! This is a Little Mermaid + Man in the Iron Mask retelling combined with such a beautiful and unique twist! Absolutely loved it and I can’t wait for the rest of the series! This book got every emotion out of me in all the right ways. I love when fantasy preaches the Gospel so clearly that my faith is encouraged! On the Edge of the Forgotten Sea is a beautiful story of faith, redemption, love, and light conquering darkness. It’s deep and rich, the world building and storytelling feel complete, the writing is poetic, the characters have depth, good and evil are clearly defined, and emotions are conveyed where you feel for and alongside the characters. Despite the Little Mermaid elements, this story still feels unique and is totally unlike anything that I’ve read this year (this was book 94 of the year for me!). It’s a portal fantasy, so there are dual settings and timelines. The story is told via multiple points of view. There are secrets and an element of suspense that kept me invested. There’s some humor as well (shoutout to Nain!). I think teens and up can enjoy this book. Honestly, it’s a captivating story, and I can’t wait to see what books 2 and 3 of this series hold!

There are a few nitpicky things that I didn’t love but can’t really talk about them due to spoilers – nothing regarding cleanliness or appropriateness though.

Content: some violence and death, not overly graphic or described in much detail; kisses-only romance, not described in much detail; some magic, seen as a gift from Esias (God) to share with others

This was such a magical journey ✨
On the Edge of the Forgotten Sea is a mystical fantasy tale with Little Mermaid vibes and a touch of time traveling. I really enjoyed reading this story, with all the secrets and betrayals in the Kingdom, and the constant struggles between a sea-maiden and a prince. Their secret, silent love for each other was their downfall, and now they'll have to resurface together.. 🔥
This book is about second chances and forgiveness, especially forgiving ourselves for our own mistakes; it was such a lovely concept ❤️‍🩹
I loved Oli and his sweet heart, especially little Oli, when he was so happy he made his first friend Merri. She was a lovable character too. They made mistakes and ended up hurting each other, but isn't it life that way? And, at the end of the day, the could find their way back to each other ❣️

Oh my heart. This story.

Y’all if you like fantasy ~ clean fantasy with the most beautiful “God is a God of hope, second chances & Light in the darkest times ” storyline then you will absolutely enjoy this story!

It is Fantasy so there is some magic elements but it’s not dark. There is an evil sea witch, I would liken her to Ursula in the Little Mermaid.

Sweet slow building love story that is completely clean & closed door

Because it’s a fantasy world the Spiritual elements aren’t outright God. But He is very present through out and the Hope & Light He brings to darkness is so beautifully woven in.

There is a bit of an intense fight scene near the end ~ but it’s not overly violent or gory. (I don’t do heavy violence/gore/intensity and this was fine for me. It fit in perfectly with the storyline & world)

This is definitely a 5 Star read for me and may be one of my favorite reads for this year!

This was such a fun read!
I went into it not knowing there would be a portal fantasy aspect to the storyline and when I came upon a certain chapter (iykyk) I was absolute floored! It was literally so cool to see how the author constructed this world (worlds?) and I loved every minute of it!

The story itself was beautiful and rife with emotion. The romance at the heart of the story spanned across worlds and lifetimes and it was lovely to read the healing/forgiveness aspects of it.

Merri was the sweetest character to root for and I related to her deeply. Just like her, I’ve always worn my emotions on my sleeve. She’s got big emotions and they are valid and real! I love that she doesn’t hide away from them, if the girl needs to cry she’s gonna cry!

Even the side characters stole pieces of my heart as the story progressed.
There is so much magic woven into the pages of this book. Magic, and also the love that God has for us.

The ending was satisfying & I’ll absolutely be picking up any other books to come in this world. ✨🤍

This book was SO CUTE and absolutely gorgeous!!
I adored so many things about this—the mystery of the start, the way the world building was slowly revealed, the way it felt like a combination of Sleeping Beauty and The Little Mermaid, with its own twist!
Obviously the characters were amazing. Olivander and Merri were SO SWEET and delights on their own. I love how much Merri cared—she has the sweetest, most loving heart. Nain was a legend, and Orsin was awesome!! Emotional support background character award goes to Jasper the manservant who hit Oli over the head with a cleaning rag because he was judging himself. Truly a master of the love yourself hammer
The romance was SO WHOLESOME and SWEET and I loved seeing it unfold. The letters in the end were probably one of my favorite parts of the whole book
Last thing is that I loved the food descriptions, they were amazing!! Check this book out, y'all won't regret it!

The ending to this book! 🥹🫶 I adored this book! It was so cute and fun and what an amazing story of a retelling of The Little Mermaid, but also so very different! I loved watching Merri and Oli develop throughout the book and watching them develop their feelings for one another. And we absolutely cannot forget about Eldarwielle! That whale was amazing and I loved him! I’m so happy we got a resolution for Nain at the end because I was about to flip 😅 overall, this was a fun and very adventurous book with an epic battle at the end. I could see parallels to Narnia and the Lord which I also loved! Would recommend the book!

The vibes and the magic of the Narnia wardrobe meet a sea maiden looking for love...a boy who stumbles upon the existence of another world...a sassy grandmother... such a fun mix!

I don't want to say too much about the characters because I don't want to inadvertently spoil anything, but I can say I loved both the fantasy world and how some of the book also took place in Wales. It was very picturesque and unique to have some characters living in a lighthouse!

I also enjoyed the faith elements scattered throughout. I liked seeing how Merri and other characters's faith was tested and how the connections between the worlds were still all seen by the same God. A good reminder that wherever you are God sees you and will take care of you!

This is a lovely, cosy 'The Little Mermaid' retelling - with an interesting twist or two! There is so much beauty in the themes the author explores; the characters: their arcs, growth, and choices.

If you want a cosy, sweet romance this sea maiden's tale is for you!

This is my favorite fantasy book of all timeeeee! I rarely find Little Mermaid retellings. And oh my goodness, the COVER IS GORGEOUS! And Jac is dreamy lol. I would give this book more than 5 stars if I could! 🩷
