Hiromu Arakawa (author: 荒川弘) is a Japanese manga artist, best known for Fullmetal Alchemist (鋼の錬金術師 Hagane no renkinjutsushi). Her real name is Hiromi Arakawa (荒川弘美).
Arakawa was born and raised on a dairy farm in Hokkaidō. She thought of being a manga artist since she was little. After graduating high school, she took oil painting classes while working on her family's farm. During that time, she also created dōjinshi manga with her friends and drew yonkoma for a magazine. After eight years she moved to Tōkyō and started out as assistant writer for Hiroyuki Etō. Her debut as manga artist is in 1999 with STRAY DOG. In 2001 she started working on her famous and award winning series Fullmetal Alchemist, that soon gets a successful anime adaptation. Other works include Silver Spoon (銀の匙 Silver Spoon, Gin no saji Silver Spoon).
i really need to sit down and reread vol 1-9 in order because i fear i forget the plot until half way through the whatever current volume is released lol 😬
anyways, another great volume despite my forgetfulness, and i’m very excited that the anime has been well received so far! i need to watch it🙂↕️
This one got darkkkkkkk at times but I loved it! We finally get some answers too!
Also, a more general series observation: This is way more of an ensemble cast story than Fullmetal Alchemist, in that while FMA is also an ensemble cast story, Ed and Al are very clearly the main characters and we're following them for like, 60-70% of the story. Yuru is probably *technically* the main character in this series but not in such an intimate way as Ed and Al - he gets about 40% of the story, if that, even though all the plotlines revolve around him and Asa (who gets even less page time - I hope she gets more soon!). So it was actually really nice in this volume that he gets a big emotional moment after visiting the village. I love the big and sprawling cast though - so many great characters! Also, the author's note at the end ('This is a story about people who've been ousted from "normal" society. What's considered "normal", anyway?') makes me really excited about where the story is going thematically.
4/5 Wow volume 10 is a huge lore dump. Yuru goes back to Higashi Village to learn what grandma Yamaha knows about the western group from Nagishi Village. We learn about the origin of the village and the fate of the last set of Break/Seal twins 400 years ago. So not a lot of action in this volume outside of flashbacks but it’s still all good stuff. However both of these villages can go fuck themselves.
Natsuki with Naughty Child & Cry Baby on the cover of volume 10.
