Rate this book
Writer/artist Walter Simonson's groundbreaking Thor run starts here! Walter Simonson's Thor raises its banner high and stands with the series' Stan Lee/Jack Kirby glory days and then some! With truly cosmic stakes, a new character worthy enough to lift Mjolnir high in Beta Ray Bill and a villain of deadly cunning in Malekith, Simonson launched his epic run with a powerful art style and a majestic narrative that reminds the reader why the legendary tales of Asgard are so compelling. After handling Malekith's ice-cold plot with the Casket of Ancient Winters, Thor must head into the fiery pits of Surtur's realm for a war that may mean the very end of Asgard. Simonson's four fabled years of storytelling with Thor starts here!

I've been looking forward to reading Walter Simonson's run for a long time and this first volume did not disappoint.

Thor was never a character I read when I was young as he never appealed but Jason Aaron's run changed that and as a fan this run was superb. I would say that modern run is more accessible as there is a narrow focus on the character at the start from which the story builds and the world grows.

This run throws the reader straight into things and does not let up! The first page sets the tone and stage for a big story but the reader has a way into world through an alien and stranger in Bill in the first arc. There were a lot of characters to get to know so having the focus in the first story eased me into this version of Thor's world.

Throughout the collection, time was spent developing Thor and the cast. Simonson has the reader spend some solo time with each of them or in pairings and small groups so we get to know them better and care for them. I really appreciated that time, though this character development and time away from the main plot may aggravate some readers. I think there is a good pay off in each case and I enjoyed the stories in their own right.

Each issue is so packed with story, there's a main plot coupled with cut ways to multiple subplots but I didn't feel this took too much away from the momentum of the main thread.

I loved the detail and dynamism of Simonson's art. Everything from the small emotional character moments to the big bombastic battles was done fantastically well.

I'm really looking forward to reading part 2 when it's release!

A truly epic story in this Epic Collection! Yowza! Simonson was firing on all cylinders; the story was rolled out well throughout, and the climax felt like it had stakes.
