Apprentice Nail Artist in a Foreign Land, Volume 1

A shoujo fantasy that brings readers into the magical world of nail art.

“I’m going to become this world’s first decorated nail artist!”

In a foreign land where nail polish acts as a magical conduit, Saara aspires to create pretty and powerful decorated nail art!  Unfortunately for Saara, she lacks both the magical ability ad the know-how to paint anything other than useless party tricks.  Even her best customer, Rocco — a beautiful wizard with a mean streak (and an even meaner apprentice) — can barely summon a spark from the cutesy nails Saara creates for him!

Rather than be discouraged, Saara determines to improve her abilities and surpass even her benefactor, the grouchy goblin Master Reed!  But as a woefully average, utterly unexceptional protagonist, Saara has a long way to go —and a lot of nails to paint — before she'll ever stand a chance at greatness.

For now, she's just an average girl working as a below-average nail artist in a fantasy world!

I LOVED reading this!

I will admit it's incredibly word-heavy with instant focus being on the world that Saara is isekaied to, but that's also why I like it, because I only know of one other series that I can think of in how rich the world-building is for this volume. But even then, I really don't think it comes close to how immersive this volume was, and showing how the magical abilities work through nail art and designs, as in this series!

I was absolutely fascinated! As someone who used to be really into painting nails and doing elaborate designs (to the point I thought of going to school and becoming a nail tech), I was very, very engaged when reading, despite that I felt I knew more about the world than the protagonist at first!

Granted, we DO get to know her and found her a fun and enjoyable character, but I confess it's truly the world itself that has me seated! It's hard for me to say what one thing I liked the most about this new world she's in, because I thought it was interesting how she has to get items for the nail art so it can have certain capabilities. For example, she needs something for anti-confusion, but to do that, you have to get butterflies that cause confusion so a user can combat it specifically. Maybe that's not explained fully well, but her having to go out and hunt for them was a really intriguing element to this story!

Though I will say I really do like the protagonist! I like how she thought she would be someone with OP abilities and have a harem because that's what happens in most isekai stories today, but didn't actually happen! LOL! One of the funniest panels is the man registering her and commenting how people like her come to this world thinking they will be "remarkable," but if they weren't remarkable in their previous life, then they won't be here either, and I'm like SIR, THE SHADE YOU ARE THROWING!! LOL! I also liked how, despite her not being wealthy and having to work hard in this world, she likes being where she is and the people/creatures around her.

That leads me to say that all the characters are interesting and I found myself invested in each one, though Rocco reminds me SO much of Howl from Howl's Moving Castle, which made me very happy! He's definitely a lot scarier than Howl, but his overall vibe reminds me of him because Rocco is an intriguing character, like Saara, I don't really know what he's thinking!

I admit I AM a little nervous about how the anime is going to adapt everything from this series, because by far, if you're a fan of very rich and detailed worldbuilding, strong chances are you will love this! It's what makes the series very unique, and I can only hope it's adapted well! Though I will say I am VERY disappointed that we did not get colored panels throughout the manga as the French edition had. I was SO hoping and wanting to see the color of the nails that Saara chooses because she makes it known that she does what is pretty, not necessarily what one needs to have "strong" nails. LOL!

Overall, I'm very, very excited to continue this! It was exactly what I had hoped it would be all those years ago when I first heard about it!

Mm, I have to be honest, I had fun with this at times, but I just wanted it to focus solely on the nail art. We do get some stuff and we get to see the importance of nail art. But Rocco just annoys me with his flippant attitude, Hou is just a pest, and our MC is just not the brightest bulb in the box though I do love how dedicated she is to doing what she loves. There was just too much for me that distracted from things. Yes, in the end a lot had to do with our MC or nail stuff, but it just felt too far away from what I actually wanted. I don't want adventures. I just wanted a chill slice of life with a nail artist.
Plus, I think what would have helped if we had met her when she just started. Or maybe start with her being there and then a flashback to how she started + about her old life. Now we get some memories and a flashback in one of the sidestories, but I want to know more!

This was fun and cute, but never really hooked me. Might revisit in the future.

I received a digital review ARC of this manga from Media Lab Public Relations on behalf of the publisher.

So…nail art has never quite interested me, largely because I don’t grow out my nails or treat them all that well. When this was gifted to me as an ARC, I had some trepidation–readers, I thought this was going to be a bit on the ridiculous side given its focus on fingernails. But actually, it’s really cute and very creative, and I enjoyed myself a lot as I read this!

The big thing to understand is the magic system. Wizards have their nails painted and decorated, and these polishes and decorations are imbued with magic they are able to channel with their fingers. If you paint someone’s nails red and then glue tiny pieces of dragon scales to decorate the nail, wham! They can summon fire by making a gesture with their finger or hand (this is just an example; I think it came from my head and not the manga). You can put different types of magic in each nail for a varied magical attack. I never thought something like this would be all that interesting, but the manga very much makes it so!

Saara doesn’t know how to put magic into her nail work, but the wizard Rocco keeps coming to her because her designs are beautiful, and he likes beautiful things. But wearing Saara’s nail art usually causes some sort of magical backfire in the user. Luckily, Rocco is quite strong so it hasn’t hurt or harmed him.

Rocco is such a bright, glitzy character compared to our more down-to-earth, grounded Saara. I hope something romantic happens between them, lol! The side characters are interesting, too, and I love the little adventures that happen to Saara all while she is trying to get settled into this new world–which, by the way, came about randomly. One minute, doing her gel nails, and the next minute, poof! New land!

An interesting detail is that the people who have come to this country from the “outside” all have rainbow eyes, including Saara. That’s not really explained, but it must mean something significant. There are tiny little details like that that keep me interested in finding out more and continuing the story.

All in all, I initially expected this book’s premise to be a bit on the loopier side, but the worldbuilding and characterization and how nail adornment is tied to magic conduction is really unique, and I had so much fun reading this. I’m definitely looking forward to the second volume!

Saara is a "voyager," someone who has transported to this foreign, fantasy world. After literally falling into a shop, she becomes an apprentice to the goblin nail artist Master Reed. Magician Rocco, her best customer, loves her artistry on his nails, but Saara needs to learn how to use the magical materials efficiently.

Honestly, I love this world and the way the magic system works. I was NOT expecting the materials used to paint nails were meant as a way to enhance magic. I thought it was a straight forward nail art manga, but the associated magic is super interesting! Rocco, Reed, his apprentice as well as other side characters are a lot of fun, but I don't think I like Saara all that much. She seems too...fake? forced? There's some old school annoying shoujo tropes like attempted kidnapping, responding to everything with kindness and enthusiasm, etc. Still getting the next volume~

I liked the sound of the story when TokyoPop announced it. It sounded interesting to have a story about nail art and magic nails.

This one was cute, but at times it seemed too long. Maybe Saara was too much of a typical manga heroine - too sweet, too passive and too ditzy. Hou was a bit too mean, too stand-offish. I don’t mind tsundere characters but you should see the other side and Hou throughout the story just can’t stand Saara. It turns into why are these two in the story. It’s not drawn as cute chibi bickering either.

I liked Rocco but the book isn’t really supposed to be about him. Maybe it would have worked better for me if the book was more about Rocco and Hou, if maybe Hou had been isekai’d a long time ago.

It’s not a bad book but I like Rocco better and he isn’t supposed to be the main character.

Excellent little fantasy series with a slice of life pacing and chapter division. The characters are all quite well made, multifaceted and interesting.

The setting and art requires more praise. Especially the fresh take on goblins, elves and general magic use. I think it is more detailed and wordy than the main audience might be prepared for when they pick it up though!

The little focus on the nail art was a disappointment. The story is messy but the manga art is beautiful and kudos for the bonus colored panels we got: Was expecting more nail art topic but that cliffhanger now got me curious.

concept is a little different, and the male main character's design is over the top, so I'm in.
