Remember the western movies, the cattle ranches, the tales of blistering heat and worse, the sub-zero temperatures of winter? In a very quick, but intense read, Alan Black takes us back in time when the struggle for survival was hard, death could be right around the next rock and making a living was a 24/7 existence. A Cold Winter is a short tale of one brave young woman, of mixed heritage, an orphan and a widow, fighting to survive and hold on to her small ranch with only her dog, her rifle and her wits to keep death from her door. Libby fought the elements, nature and loneliness. We have been invited into her mind, to hear her thoughts, to listen to her conversations with those she lost and to see how she calculates the odds of survival when her wayward cattle force her on a journey in sub-zero temps.

Do you need a heroine with grit? A woman of the past who will stand out as a model for any woman to be proud of? Thanks to Alan Black, Libby is that woman. He has set a bleak and freezing stage for his heroine, filled it with life-threatening danger an allowed her to work out how to survive against the odds. Mr. Black writes with such realism in his world building and his character development, I may never thaw out or get certain smells out of my mind. I certainly hope to read more about Libby in the future.

Mr. Black writes with such realism. He’s definitely a true storyteller.

Mr. Black has invited the reader to take a journey into the world a brave woman named Libby.

The stage is set for one lone woman’s difficulties in facing a hard cold winter from beginning of page one.

The writing captivated me from the start. Mr. Black’s attention to detail puts the reader right next to his character.

Great job Mr. Black. Looking forward to reading more of your work.

A short story is for me a more difficult thing to revue. I always feel that I'm being short changed by the writer or the character. Libby sounds like somebody I'd like to know better. She needs more than a short story to be properly introduced. I want more story so I can get to know Libby better. Nice appetizer now where's the beef?
