Jess was on the hunt for Chance Beauregard when he runs into a trapper, Chad Buntner, who is down on his luck. He agrees to let him ride with him just long enough to catch Beauregard, but Buntner turns out to be cursed with bad luck. Things keep happening to Buntner, and when Jess tries to leave him behind, Buntner takes a bullet meant for Jess. He feels guilty about Buntner taking the bullet, so he reluctantly agrees to let him accompany him.
Along the way, they run into a cattle rancher, George Wesley, who is in a feud with an unscrupulous sheep rancher by the name of Barney Fiddler. Wesley has a couple of his men transport two hundred thousand dollars to his bank in San Antonio. When they end up dead and the money is missing, Wesley runs into Jess and convinces him to find the men responsible for the killings and get his money back.
Jess takes the job, but he’s not sure he’ll survive this one with Buntner having one problem after another. He begins to wonder if he’ll ever finish the job or end up with a dirt blanket because of Buntner and his seemingly cursed luck that hangs over them like a dark cloud.

In 1990 Robert J. Thomas was sworn in as the full time mayor for the city of Westland, Michigan. He served twelve years, making him the longest serving mayor in Westland's history.
While he was mayor he wrote his first book titled, How to Run for Local Office, which has now sold over 25,000 copies worldwide.
He has written and published on Kindle, the Jess Williams Westerns series. Retired, he now lives in Mississippi with his wfe Jill.
Thomas writes this one more tongue in cheek than serious bounty hunting. Jess befriends a down and out former miner. The man suffers from serious bad luck and therein lies the story. Many instances of bad luck befalling Buntner, from being shot a couple times to having a passing bird crap on ;his head.
Jesse Williams meets a mountain man who was having a wagon load of bad luck. His name was Buntner, he was robbed of his pack mule, his traps were stolen with the furs he was going to cash in. Buntner didn't have a gun, he had traded it for some food. So our good friend Jesse Williams offers him food and gives him two handful of bullets for the long rifle that Buntner was carrying. Even the horse Buntner was crow bite. This man was bad news any way looked at it. Jesse takes him along bounty hunting and shares the bounty with Buntner, as you know Jesse has the tendency to share his bounties with those who really need help/assistance. As you read this great series you will read about how he's helped people, town's with financial assistance...not a greedy man. Considering the type of business he's in, he gives back to mankind. A GREAT ADVENTURE EVERYONE😉
Jess Williams is a great character. Me Thomas is a great writer and knows how to tell a story with wonderful characters. I just love this series. I can't wait to start the next one.
Jess can sure meet some odd people. He always helps them. Crooked Sheriff's. And always a gunmen. O well We don't know what we would do in his world. Different times.
A superb novel with exciting and interesting characters. A no nonsense "ddie up go." I hope the two main man hunters pair up again. I would recommend this book to all you cowboys and cowgirls. This is a brutal and bloody story. Not for the squeamish. Read at your own risk and keep your camp fire low.
Loved this book. I particularly liked Jess' sidekick in this one. Talk about bad luck. LOL. All in all this was the best so far and that is saying something. Please keep them coming . I can't wait for # 36.
I have read all the Jess Williams novels and I love them. The body count in this one is lower but Mess takes on a partner and there are some very good scenes between them.
Really enjoyed this book. It had a good story and some good humor. I wish that Buntner would ride along with Jess for a while, he was a good addition, and added some light hearted humor to the story.
I liked Jess's sidekick in this book. He was hilarious, yet honest to a fault. Jess gave him a fitting nickname, helped him out, and the sidekick developed into an even better man.
Three and a half stars. Not as interesting as others but still okay. His 'partner' added a touch of humor and more trouble for Jess, but hanging around Jess long enough and he became a better man for it.
Jess is hunting a mean murder when he meets an old mountain man. The man teams up with Jess, and they hunt down a bunch of thieves and killers. Many laughs in this story.
